STURGE MOORE, Thomas.
printed for private circulation by Folkard, Devonshire Street, Queen Square W.C. November 26th 1893, London. Wood engraving by Sturge Moore. First edition. 16 pp. pamphlet, sewn as issued. Outer leaves slightly dusty with a small brown spot at the rear, otherwise an extremely good untrimmed copy. After his first properly published book, The Vinedresser, appeared in 1899 he came to the notice of many in the wider literary world including WB Yeats who became a lifelong friend and who used him to provide dramatic cover designs for 6 of his books including The Tower. Sturge Moore had been taught by a young Charles Shannon at Croydon School of Art where he was a contemporary of Arthur Rackham and then he was taught wood engraving by Charles Ricketts from 1887 at Lambeth School of Art. He later rented a workroom at Shannon and Ricketts' house at the Vale and by the time this book appeared he had encountered a large part of London's literary and artistic scene including Wilde, Shaw and Beerbohm. A.L. Donaldson
New York City: RARE Antique Book "A Millbrook Romance and Other Tales" by A.L. Donaldson 1893. Hardcover, gilded, 155 pages, needs some restoration (stains, some cracked internal binding, warped some). Approximately 5"x7.5" size. Published by Mr. Thomas Whittaker, at Nos. 2 and 3, Bible House, corner Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue, New York, 1893. The publisher is as rare/important in the book's value as the book itself. Publisher has own unique history. Internet research: As of 2/1/17, No other copy for sale online; none showed up as existed in Abe Books or other researched book finder search engines. Library of Congress showed only 2 books in libraries and several copies on microfiche. N.Y. Times Quote from: Book News., A Monthly Survey of General Literature, Volume XI, September 1892 to August 1893: A new writer whose work is so carefully done as to give promise of other things to his credit is Mr. Donaldson. His "Millbrook Romance" is one of several little short stories that fill this volume. It relates to a man who loved Helen from his boyhood until he was aged and never married her. It's rein of sentimentalism is of the Goethe kind. In pleasant contrast is another story, "A Pair of Gloves", which leads one to ask why did not that fine looking young fellow, Alfred, kiss the pretty Gertrude while she appeared to sleep on the veranda. She was comely and there was his opportunity. Moreover, she was not actually asleep, and the author recalls the French maxim, that a neglected woman is vengeful. She quite expected to be kissed, and she taxed him with the matter. Maybe she … [Click Below for Full Description]

DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (Lewis Carroll)
DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (Lewis Carroll). Curiosa Mathematica. Part II, Pillow Problems Thought Out During Sleepless Nights. London: Horace Hart for Macmillan, 1893. FIRST EDITION. 1 vol., diagrammatic frontispiece. Bound in the original black stamped tan cloth, spine relined at an earlier date, original cloth spine paid down, inner hinges fine, some minor foxing to pastedowns and endpapers otherwise internally clean and bright, overall generally a GOOD+ copy. WMG&C #246. The first edition of Part II is particularly scarce because on publication of the second edition, in August of the same year, Dodgson asked Macmillan to stop supplying copies of this first edition, and to recall those already in the hands of agents, replacing them with copies of the new edition. The great majority of the seventy-two problems of "Curiosa Mathematica", chiefly in Algebra, Plane Geometry or Trigonometry, were 'almost all mentally worked out in the night, without a word or line put on paper till the daylight came. The Introduction describes the method of calculation, and states that Dodgson generally wrote the answer first, then the question and solution! He could distinctly visualize complicated diagrams in the dark, such as the frontispiece ... He published the problems to encourage the pastime as a means of avoiding undesired thought by concentration on a subject' (WMGC p. 181). Who we are - D&D Galleries was founded in 1985. Sir Thomas Malory
J.M. Dent. The Birth, Life, and Acts of King Arthur of His Noble Knights of the Round table Their Marvellous Enquests and Adventures the Achieving of the San Greal and in the End le Morte Darthur with the Dolourous Death and Departing Out of This World of Them All. by Sir Thomas Malory, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. First edition, limited to 1,500 copies. Volume One only (Includes Books 1-9), in extremely rare dust jacket. Published London: J. M. Dent, 1893. 4to., 8 1/2" x 10", lxiv + 455 pages, illustrated with full page plates, vignettes, borders, in-text decorations and cover design by Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley's first major commission and a landmark of great illustrated books. Beardsley juxtaposed various traditional and contemporary styles with his own, and laid them down, side-by-side throughout the book. From elaborate and formal William Morris design elements to shocking eroticism and striking decadence - as in the case of the frontpiece plate of Arthur. Cream linen cloth with elaborate gilt design and fancy titles. Top edge gilting, 3-color ribbon marker bound in. Slight foxing to the cloth, endpapers toned along the perimeters, some wrinkling to the tissue guard at frontis, else very good, attractive; binding square and tight in rare, unrecorded dust jacket. We have been unable to locate any other example in a dust jacket. Jacket has rebacking and loss at the spine and rear panel. A highly desirable and collectible book. (HOUSMAN, Laurence.) ROSSETTI, Christina.
London: Macmillan & Co, 1893. London: Macmillan & Co,, 1893. Illustrated by Laurence Housman. Duodecimo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, covers elaborately blocked in gilt, gilt edges. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom slip case. Illustrated title page and 12 plates by Laurence Housman, and several vignettes in the text. Ends slightly bumped, very minor rubbing to the tips. A very good copy the dust jacket, discreet repair to folds and spine panel, spine panel a little darkened. First Housman-illustrated edition, trade issue, in the highly scarce dust jacket. This fantastical narrative poem, which was first published in 1862 with illustrations by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel, has eluded classification, having been interpreted variously as a feminist tract, a capitalist critique, an allegory for drug addiction, and a children's story. The illustrator Laurence Housman (1865-1959) worked in an intricate art-nouveau style. The brother of the poet A. E. Housman, Laurence was a committed writer himself, and was the co-founder of the Men's League for Women's Suffrage.
