Eddy, J. M.
San Francisco: D. S. Stanley & Co., 1893. First Edition. Hardcover . Very Good. 112 pages, including more than 200 half-tone reproductions of photographs. Roughly 9 by 11 inches. The most elaborate of the 19th century booster publications on Humboldt County, California, extolling the region's extensive natural resources with an eye toward attracting investment. As with most such publications of the era, it proudly proclaims that no Chinese lived or worked in the county--they had been forcibly expelled in 1885. The book was produced through the newly established Chamber of Commerce and was filled with many pages of economic data, at least some of which was more inspirational than actual. According to reports published at the time in local newspapers, 15,000 copies of the book were printed, most in decorated wrappers; 'a hundred or more copies bound in leather', and an unspecified number (presumably in the hundreds) in thin cloth-covered boards. Despite the large print run, it is remarkably uncommon, perhaps due to the cheap binding, which tends to fall apart (the expense breakdown for the publication provided by the Chamber after the book was finished allocated only a penny per book for binding, compared to 20 cents for paper and printing). First edition (first printing). One of a hundred or so copies bound in thin leather-covered boards stamped in gilt on the cover. Previous owner's blindstamp on marbled endpaper. Spine leather repaired in a few places, but generally a very good copy of a scarce book. [JSP01]

The original front wrapper has been backed and the missing areas have been filled in. The spine and rear wrapper are modern, but have colored to match the original front wrapper. The edges of the first few pages are chipped and several corners are clipped. There are a few spots of foxing to the interior, but otherwise it remains very clean. Housed in a modern clamshell box with rounded leather spine titled in gilt. 163 pages. LIT/030614. Very Good.

A.L. Donaldson
New York City: Mr. Thomas Whittaker. Antique Book A Millbrook Romance and Other Tales by A.L. Donaldson 1893. Hardcover, gilded, 155 pages, needs some restoration (the binding needs reinforcement). Dimensions approximately 5 x 7.5 inches. Minor creasing, light pencil writing on the inside page, one jacket blank page could be missing - see photos for detailed description. Published by Mr. Thomas Whittaker, at Nos. 2 and 3, Bible House, corner Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue, New York, 1893. The publisher is as rare/important in the item's value as the book itself. Publisher has own unique history. Reportedly, Library of Congress showed only 2 books in libraries. N.Y. Times Quote from: Book News., A Monthly Survey of General Literature, Volume XI, September 1892 to August 1893: A new writer whose work is so carefully done as to give promise of other things to his credit is Mr. Donaldson. His Millbrook Romance is one of several little short stories that fill this volume. It relates to a man who loved Helen from his boyhood until he was aged and never married her. Its rein of sentimentalism is of the Goethe kind. In pleasant contrast is another story, A Pair of Gloves, which leads one to ask why did not that fine looking young fellow, Alfred, kiss the pretty Gertrude while she appeared to sleep on the veranda. She was comely and there was his opportunity. Moreover, she was not actually asleep, and the author recalls the French maxim, that a neglected woman is vengeful. She quite expected to be kissed, and she taxed him with the matter. Maybe she already bought the pair of gloves … [Click Below for Full Description]

Haggard, H. Rider; Illustrated by Maurice Greiffenhagen
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1893. Maurice Greiffenhagen. Hardcover. First Edition of this Aztec romance. Author's Presentation Copy, inscribed "To Andrew from his affec brother H Rider Haggard 1894." Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was the author of a number of adventure novels set in exotic locales. His books, including She and King Solomon's Mines, are still popular today. Haggard traveled to Mexico in 1891 to do research for this book and sadly his young son died while he was away. The book describes the first interactions between the Spanish and South American natives, as well as murders, shipwrecks, and slavery. Colonel Andrew Haggard, who had a distinguished military career - he was one of he first British officers to command in the Egyptian army - was also a successful novelist, travel writer and poet. It is known that Andrew helped Rider with the writing of Dawn and he likely played an important role in helping his younger brother with the several bestsellers which revolved around Egypt and mummies. There are 25 black and white illustrations by the British painter and illustrator Maurice Greiffenhagen. He was Haggard's friend, which led him to illustrate several of his adventure books, starting with She in 1889. Bound in the original publisher's blue-green cloth with gilt author and title to front cover and spine. Light bumping, small chip to bottom of faded spine. Hinges a bit tender but text block is tight. Interior pages are clean. Bookplate of collector Mark Samuels Lasner to front pastedown. Barrie, J. M.; Arthur Conan Doyle
London: Chappell & Co., 1893. Paperback. This is a very scarce item with an interesting history. J.M. Barrie (1860-1937) and Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) met early in their writing careers when they both wrote for the magazine The Idler. They were both Scottish and passionate about cricket, and they became great friends. Their odd collaboration in writing this operetta came about because Barrie had agreed to write the libretto. He became ill, however, perhaps suffering a nervous breakdown, and his friend Doyle came to his rescue by collaborating with him on the work. Despite their efforts, the operetta was a failure, which apparently bothered them very little. In the original printed wrappers. This is a very nice copy of this uncommon work, particularly in this condition. It is a variant issue of this unusual collaboration. Housed in slipcase with the bookplates of Lord Esher and Clark Hunter. LIT/100709. Very Good.

From their letters it is clear that she held a special place in his affections and was one of his closest friends and confidantes. (See "Bravest of women, finest of friends": Henry James's Letters to Lucy Clifford, ed. Marysa Demoor and Monty Chisholm, 1999). The essays include pieces on James Russell Lowell, Fanny Kemble, Gustave Flaubert, Henrk Ibsen, and Mrs. Humphrey Ward. Bound in original beige cloth with gilt author and title to spine and front cover, and an Art Nouveau style decoration on front.Light rubbing, bumping, and three ink stains on front cover. [at sea, on the road, 1893. 4to, pp. [82]; Liverpool stationer's label on paste-down, edges marbled, extremities a bit rubbed, else a very good copy in black limp morocco. Laid in are approx. 20 octavo manuscript leaves from an unknown American women's diary dated October 1887 - August 1891. A lively account of a voyage around the world, with some interesting details of travel in the United States, Australia, Tasmania, and Hawaii, but primarily covering New Zealand. The author, presumably an American man (as per the style of dating, use of syntax, etc. --and perhaps living in the England at the time) identified only as JHM, begins the journey from Liverpool bound for Chicago via New York, to spend several days at the Chicago World's Fair. He traveled on the Shaw, Savill & Albion steamer SS Tainui, stopping in Las Palmas (Canary Islands), Cape Town, and Hobart, and arriving in Wellington on January 9, 1894. He spent a month traveling around New Zealand by rail, steamer, and stage coach, and offers detailed commentary on the characteristics of transportation and accommodation (with many individual hotels mentioned), as well as the appearance and commercial activities of the principal towns. Includes a visit to Cable Bay telegraph station, with details on the method of transmission, detecting and repairing damage to the cables, etc. One of the most engaging sections describes a perilous (if beautiful) journey through Buller Gorge, as his party finds themselves at the mercy of a coach driver so reckless as to cause them to "consider the advisability of setting down until a rail … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beardsley, Aubrey
[1893]. An original drawing by Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley (1872-1898) is the best known illustrator from the British 1890s. He lived a tragically short time, dying of tuberculosis at the age of 25. This lovely major work, the epitome of Beardsley's style of art nouveau, is for the spine of the binding cases of Sir Thomas Malory, Le morte Darthur, published by J. M. Dent, 1893-94, Beardsley's first important commission. The book's title (spelled incorrectly as "La Morte Darthur"), author, publisher, and date are included in the design, which is in fact drawn on four separate pieces of paper that have been adhered together. Malory's Le Morte Darthur, published by Dent has been described as incomparable. The same can be said of Aubrey Beardsley's beautiful and remarkable designs (a term he preferred to "illustrations"). Beardsley was only 20 years old when Dent commissioned him to do all of the designs for this work. It was a leap of faith by Dent in taking a chance on an unproven artist. The illustrations were done during 1892-1894 for the initial issue in parts, beginning in June 1893. The design is done in ink on paper with pencil under-drawing showing the change from the initial position of the leaves, on four separate pieces of paper, the title and top border inset above the ornamental panel ; 27 x 6.7 cm. Framed. In fine condition. Provenance: J. M. Dent. Exhibited: "Burne-Jones, The Pre-Raphaelites, and their Century," Peter Nahum, London, 1989, 165 (listed in catalogue vol. I, p. 166-167, reproduced. vol. 2, pl. 124); "Beautiful Decadence," Japan, 1998, 7 (reproduced … [Click Below for Full Description]

A very presentable, although not perfect, 2-volume biography of one of the most colorful and adventurous figures to cut a swathe through the Nineteenth Century. Isabel Burton's photo and to frontis. After Sir Richard's death, it is said his widow burnt a large number of papers, journals and Burton's revision to The Perfumed Garden, which some say he considered his true magnum opus, claiming "his spirit" told her to do this. So it goes. On a page preceding her foreword, the widow dedicates a "Consecration". Wrappers rubbed and tanned, short closed tears to the upper wrapper, title page, and page 759 repaired with tissue, occasional small spots. overall very good. An uncommon offprint by the mathematician and archaeologist James Burgess (1832-1916), a presentation copy inscribed by the author on the upper wrapper, "with the author's compliments, June 1898" and bound together with a 2-page autograph letter signed on Indian astronomy, in particular the "lunar mansion" Pushya, and its principal star. Burgess directed the Archaeological Survey of India between 1886 and 1889, having initiated architectural surveys of the Bombay presidency in the early 1860s, his tours in Western India resulted in 26 "magnificent volumes" in which he attempted to develop the foundations of an "architectural archaeology of the region" (Guha, Artefacts of History, p.11). He was also one of the leading Western researchers into Indian astronomy. This offprint is an overview of the European study of Hindu astronomy up to the 1890s, and was described by the historian of science Otto Neugebauer as "very useful" for providing "complete references to the early literature which contains much important information that is no longer available otherwise" (Neugebauer, The Exact Scie … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Forgeries) Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, Eugene Field Jr., Harry Dayton Sickles
Columbus: Follett, Foster, 1893. First edition, later issue no '2' on p. 17. Cloth, very good, light wear to extremities, light abrasions from bookplate removal to pastedown, some foxing especially to endleaves, housed in quarter morocco and cloth slipcase, gilt titled. Forged signatures by Eugene Field and his partner in crime Harry Dayton Sickles: 'This is my book. Abraham Lincoln,' and 'his' hand 'Lincoln & Herndon', with Eugene Field's signature dated 1893 and the signature of R. M. Field (who was one of the lead attorneys in the Dred Scott case of 1857). All of these signatures are very very liikely to be phony. Eugene Field Jr.'s 1937 attestation at the rear fills up two pages. A curiosity, collectible as a Fields forgery, although the owner of this book, a wealthy collector in the Pittsburgh area, was crestfallen when I broke him the bad news that no, this was not Lincoln's copy. Walton, Izaak and Cotton, Charles; Hawkins, John, Sir (Lives of
Samuel Bagster and Sons, Limited, 1893. Linnell, John. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Two volumes, complete, number 247 of 350 copies, quarto size, 512 pp. Near fine. The Tercentenary Edition of "The Compleat Angler", which since its first publication in 1653 has gone through over 400 editions: author and biographer Izaak Walton's (1593-1683) third and most abiding work. The variable fishing manual drew on many sources, both ancient and contemporary for the information presented on fish and fishing, including but not limited to Pliny, Gesner, Topsel, Bacon, George Herbert, his friend and contemporary John Donne, and Michael Drayton. The text is organised as a conversation between two (and after 1655 three) travellers, each representing a sportsman: fisherman, hunter, and falconer, and a model in the fisherman of the apostles of the New Testament. Some useful, and some perhaps now outdated details for baiting, catching and cooking a variety of fish are discussed, along with axioms from which the reader might strive to live a better life. This edition presents a score of new footnotes on the author's sources, corrections, new illustrations including portraits of the contributors, several watercolour sketches etched by Percy Thomas after Samuel Bagster; engravings after Linnell, Wale, and others were engraved for this edition by G. E. Lodge. Memoirs of Walton and Cotton are abridged from their "Lives" by Sir John Hawkins, and add additional bibliographic interest. Overall a beautiful production and homage to the angling classic and its author, published on the "tercentenary" of h … [Click Below for Full Description]
