BURTON, Richard F
Tylston and Edwards. 1893 Vikram & the VAMPIRE Sanskrit Folklore India MAGIC Illustrated Hindu Occult An incredible and fascinating collection of tales and Sanskrit folk legends from India by Richard F Burton. While the stories included are all adapted by Burton and not original to his imagination, they have endured time and remain popular today. This collection features the famous Baital Pachisi, a Hindu perspective on vampires originally written, or told, in the 11th-century. According to ‘The Encyclopedia of Vampires,’ “In his translation, Burton included 11 of what he judged to be the best of the ‘baital’ tales. They deal with Indian customs, manners, and religious, and magical practices. At the end of each tale, the ‘baital’ poses questions that are like riddles.” Item number: #5778 Price: $550 BURTON, Richard F Vikram and the vampire : or, Tales of Hindu devilry London : Tylston and Edwards, 1893. 1893. TUNISIE. LYBIE. DIPLOMATIE FRANCO-TURQUE. [Click Below for Full Description]

Edwin H. Porter
1893. Condition: Acceptable. Front cover is loose, but not entirely separated from the binding, Pages have tanned, but are clean and intactBorden murders and trial. Published by R. H. Buffinton by Munroe Press, 1893 in a small limited edition of perhaps 500 copies. Many sold by advance subscription. There was never a second printing. Contains illustrations including crime scene photos. Edwin H. Porter was police reporter for the Fall River Globe. At the top of the preface page, there is a stamp: "John T. Swift, Attorney At Law. Mr. Swift has also signed his signature on the flyleaf inside the front cover. John Tuttle Swift lived next door to Maplecroft, Lizzie's residence after her acquittal. He was also involved, as a lawyer, in some real estate transactions between Lizzie and another neighbor. The book is fragile, but it is the real thing - a relic of the Lizzie Borden saga. It was speculated that Lizzie attempted to buy up all copies of the book when it was published in order to destroy them. If true, not many escaped her net. Apparently Lizzie didn't know that a copy of the hated book lived right next door to Maplecroft. As may be seen in the photos, the front cover is loose, but not entirely separated from the binding. This book is not to be confused with the reprint published in 1985 by the King Philip Publishing Co. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Between 1888 and 1892. . . . / Hertz sought a basic understanding of nature; despite his origins in engineering and despite the fact that he made his major discoveries in an engineering school while teaching electricity, he did not concern himself much with the practical implications of electric waves. Others soon did, however. In the early 1890's the young inventor Guglielmo Marconi read of Hertz's electric wave experiments in an Italian electrical journal and began considering the possibility of communication by wireless waves. Hertz's work initiated a technological development as momentous as its physical counterpart." â€" DSB VI, pp. 343-349. DAPHNIS AND CHLOE - BOIS de CHARLES RICKETTS à chaque page - SUPERBE ILLUSTRATION ET TYPOGRAPHIE PRÉRAPHAÉLITE - tirage limité à 210 exemplaires - in-4, cartonnage d'éditeur - BALLANTYNE PRESS, LONDRES1893 - BEL EXEMPLAIRE DE CE MAGNIFIQUE OUVRAGE Daphnis and Chloe is a relatively large book - measuring 29 by 22 cm. It was issued by Elkin Mathews and John Lane at the Bodley Head in 210 copies, all bound in plain green cloth. The book belongs to the early works of the Vale Artists, as they were called in several portraits of them in The Sketch (1895): Ricketts, Shannon, Lucien Pissarro and Reginald Savage. The name referred to Ricketts's and Shannon's house and studios in The Vale, and would become the name of their private press as well: The Vale Press. The cover for Daphnis and Chloetestifies of their wish to publish the book themselves, and mentions 'The Vale' on the spine. While the artists were still working on the engravings, John Lane of The Bodley Head agreed to take the risk of publication, and paid for the costs of printing and binding.
