Barrie, J. M.; Arthur Conan Doyle
London: Chappell & Co., 1893. Paperback. This is a very scarce item with an interesting history. J.M. Barrie (1860-1937) and Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) met early in their writing careers when they both wrote for the magazine The Idler. They were both Scottish and passionate about cricket, and they became great friends. Their odd collaboration in writing this operetta came about because Barrie had agreed to write the libretto. He became ill, however, perhaps suffering a nervous breakdown, and his friend Doyle came to his rescue by collaborating with him on the work. Despite their efforts, the operetta was a failure, which apparently bothered them very little. In the original printed wrappers. This is a very nice copy of this uncommon work, particularly in this condition. It is a variant issue of this unusual collaboration. Housed in slipcase with the bookplates of Lord Esher and Clark Hunter. LIT/100709. Very Good.

WIESER, Friedrich von.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1893. London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1893. Edited with a Preface and Analysis by William Smart. The translation by Christian A. Malloch. Octavo. Original brown pebble grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, triple rules to covers in blind, black endpapers. Dark marks to spine, spine ends a little rubbed, pages unopened, rip to top of leaf B1, top edge soiled. A very good copy. First English language edition, first impression of a classic of economics, in which the author attempts to apply marginal utility analysis to the determination of cost. Wieser (1851-1926) was one of the leading exponents of the Austrian, or "subjective", school of economics. In his first book, Über den Ursprung und die Hauptgesetze des wirtschaftlichen Werthes (1884), which already foreshadowed theories of the present work, Wieser introduced the term Grenznutzen (marginal utility). The book earned him a lectureship at the University of Vienna. "Here he continued to work on the same problems and also on what he regarded merely as a first step toward a theory of value that was to be fully developed in [the present work]. He employed the expository device of studying value in a centrally directed economy and suggested possible applications of utility theory to public finance. The book gained him almost immediate acclaim, and it was soon translated into English" (Friederich von Hayek in IESS).

The play was not reprinted in its original form and was heavily revised before printed in 1918. This is also a notable association copy, with the bookplate of Richard Le Gallienne. Beardsley's first major commission and a landmark of great illustrated books. Beardsley juxtaposed various traditional and contemporary styles with his own, and laid them down, side-by-side throughout the book. From elaborate and formal William Morris design elements to shocking eroticism and striking decadence - as in the case of the frontpiece plate of Arthur. Cream linen cloth with elaborate gilt design and fancy titles. Top edge gilting, 3-color ribbon marker bound in. Slight foxing to the cloth, endpapers toned along the perimeters, some wrinkling to the tissue guard at frontis, else very good, attractive; binding square and tight in rare, unrecorded dust jacket. We have been unable to locate any other example in a dust jacket. Jacket has rebacking and loss at the spine and rear panel. A highly desirable and collectible book. Izaak Walton
London: Samuel Bagster and Sons, Limited, 1893. Condition: Near fine. Two volumes, complete, number 247 of 350 copies, quarto size, 512 pp. The Tercentenary Edition of "The Compleat Angler", which since its first publication in 1653 has gone through over 400 editions: author and biographer Izaak Walton's (1593-1683) third and most abiding work. The variable fishing manual drew on many sources, both ancient and contemporary for the information presented on fish and fishing, including but not limited to Pliny, Gesner, Topsel, Bacon, George Herbert, his friend and contemporary John Donne, and Michael Drayton. The text is organised as a conversation between two (and after 1655 three) travellers, each representing a sportsman: fisherman, hunter, and falconer, and a model in the fisherman of the apostles of the New Testament. Some useful, and some perhaps now outdated details for baiting, catching and cooking a variety of fish are discussed, along with axioms from which the reader might strive to live a better life. This edition presents a score of new footnotes on the author's sources, corrections, new illustrations including portraits of the contributors, several watercolour sketches etched by Percy Thomas after Samuel Bagster; engravings after Linnell, Wale, and others were engraved for this edition by G. E. Lodge. Memoirs of Walton and Cotton are abridged from their "Lives" by Sir John Hawkins, and add additional bibliographic interest. Overall a beautiful production and homage to the angling classic and its author, published on the "tercentenary" of his birth. An important a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edwin H. Porter
1893. Condition: Acceptable. Front cover is loose, but not entirely separated from the binding, Pages have tanned, but are clean and intactBorden murders and trial. Published by R. H. Buffinton by Munroe Press, 1893 in a small limited edition of perhaps 500 copies. Many sold by advance subscription. There was never a second printing. Contains illustrations including crime scene photos. Edwin H. Porter was police reporter for the Fall River Globe. At the top of the preface page, there is a stamp: "John T. Swift, Attorney At Law. Mr. Swift has also signed his signature on the flyleaf inside the front cover. John Tuttle Swift lived next door to Maplecroft, Lizzie's residence after her acquittal. He was also involved, as a lawyer, in some real estate transactions between Lizzie and another neighbor. The book is fragile, but it is the real thing - a relic of the Lizzie Borden saga. It was speculated that Lizzie attempted to buy up all copies of the book when it was published in order to destroy them. If true, not many escaped her net. Apparently Lizzie didn't know that a copy of the hated book lived right next door to Maplecroft. As may be seen in the photos, the front cover is loose, but not entirely separated from the binding. This book is not to be confused with the reprint published in 1985 by the King Philip Publishing Co. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Kipling, Rudyard, writer (1865-1936).
Naulakha, Brattleboro, Vermont, 20. XII. 1893. 8vo. 2 pp. To the American author William H. Rideing (1853-1918): "[.] I am in receipt of yours of the 18th instant suggesting a 2000-2500 w[ord] article for the Companion. Now that I have seen some of the mothers of the youths who read the paper I may perhaps be able to come nearer to its demands. It is very difficult for me to invent notions but I find in my notebooks the story of a young apprentice in the repairing shops of the E.I.R. [East Indian Railways] our Great Indian railroad. We will suppose he is 18 or 19 - sketch the life of the railway community and a railway town in India (Bengal) and make him mend and bring in, on one piston, a broken down loco. in flood time, as he is travelling to a volunteer rifle match. The tale would introduce the country-bred white of the Indian RR's - a parsee engine driver and so on - all the difference that there is between an American + an Indian line. I should prefer 3500 w[ords] to turn in but if you find that does not meet your approval kindly let me know and we will try something else. I used to know something of our Indian railway line. It’s community apart. Very many thanks for Sir E[dwin] Arnolds Jungle Life series. I am doing a set of tales on the same subject more or less for St Nicholas, giving the Jungle people’s views of mankind [.]". - Kipling's works of fiction include "The Jungle Book" (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"), the "Just So Stories" (1902), "Kim" (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). Having lobbied hard for an official place for women in the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, activists in Chicago succeeded in acquiring permission for the construction of a Woman's Building. It was designed by Sophia Hayden, aged twenty-one, the first female graduate of the four-year architecture programme at MIT, and was at that time the largest exhibition building funded and devoted to exhibits of women's work. This, the official handbook for the Woman's Building, was edited by Maud Howe Elliott (1854-1948), daughter of the abolitionist and suffragist Julia Ward Howe, and comprises thirty contributions from women — including an essay on women illustrators by Morse — w … [Click Below for Full Description]
