Field, Michael [Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper]
London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane at the sign of the Bodley Head, 1893. Hardcover. One of 120 copies. Uncommon first published edition. This book comprises the sheets of the private issue with four preliminary leaves added, containing half-title, limitation notice, Mathews and Lane title-page, preface, errata list, and a note explaining that "The play stands simply as it was roughly printed for our own and the actors' use. " At the back is a single leaf of advertisements for Michael Field titles followed by a Bodley Head catalogue dated 1893. The play was not reprinted in its original form and was heavily revised before printed in 1918. This is also a notable association copy, with the bookplate of Richard Le Gallienne. Not only was Le Gallienne well acquainted with the authors, but he was also the publisher's reader for the Bodley Head when the book was published. Bound in original green cloth with red title and author to spine and front cover. Offsetting to free front and rear endpapers. Pages unopened. Very good condition. 48 pages plus 16 page publisher's catalog. DRA/081015. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Sir Thomas Malory
London: J.M. Dent, 1893. The Birth, Life, and Acts of King Arthur of His Noble Knights of the Round table Their Marvellous Enquests and Adventures the Achieving of the San Greal and in the End le Morte Darthur with the Dolourous Death and Departing Out of This World of Them All. by Sir Thomas Malory, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. First edition, limited to 1,500 copies. Volume One only (Includes Books 1-9), in extremely rare dust jacket. Published London: J. M. Dent, 1893. 4to., 8 1/2" x 10", lxiv + 455 pages, illustrated with full page plates, vignettes, borders, in-text decorations and cover design by Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley's first major commission and a landmark of great illustrated books. Beardsley juxtaposed various traditional and contemporary styles with his own, and laid them down, side-by-side throughout the book. From elaborate and formal William Morris design elements to shocking eroticism and striking decadence - as in the case of the frontpiece plate of Arthur. Cream linen cloth with elaborate gilt design and fancy titles. Top edge gilting, 3-color ribbon marker bound in. Slight foxing to the cloth, endpapers toned along the perimeters, some wrinkling to the tissue guard at frontis, else very good, attractive; binding square and tight in rare, unrecorded dust jacket. We have been unable to locate any other example in a dust jacket. Jacket has rebacking and loss at the spine and rear panel. A highly desirable and collectible book. Izaak Walton
London: Samuel Bagster and Sons, Limited, 1893. Condition: Near fine. Two volumes, complete, number 247 of 350 copies, quarto size, 512 pp. The Tercentenary Edition of "The Compleat Angler", which since its first publication in 1653 has gone through over 400 editions: author and biographer Izaak Walton's (1593-1683) third and most abiding work. The variable fishing manual drew on many sources, both ancient and contemporary for the information presented on fish and fishing, including but not limited to Pliny, Gesner, Topsel, Bacon, George Herbert, his friend and contemporary John Donne, and Michael Drayton. The text is organised as a conversation between two (and after 1655 three) travellers, each representing a sportsman: fisherman, hunter, and falconer, and a model in the fisherman of the apostles of the New Testament. Some useful, and some perhaps now outdated details for baiting, catching and cooking a variety of fish are discussed, along with axioms from which the reader might strive to live a better life. This edition presents a score of new footnotes on the author's sources, corrections, new illustrations including portraits of the contributors, several watercolour sketches etched by Percy Thomas after Samuel Bagster; engravings after Linnell, Wale, and others were engraved for this edition by G. E. Lodge. Memoirs of Walton and Cotton are abridged from their "Lives" by Sir John Hawkins, and add additional bibliographic interest. Overall a beautiful production and homage to the angling classic and its author, published on the "tercentenary" of his birth. An important a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edwin H. Porter
1893. Condition: Acceptable. Front cover is loose, but not entirely separated from the binding, Pages have tanned, but are clean and intactBorden murders and trial. Published by R. H. Buffinton by Munroe Press, 1893 in a small limited edition of perhaps 500 copies. Many sold by advance subscription. There was never a second printing. Contains illustrations including crime scene photos. Edwin H. Porter was police reporter for the Fall River Globe. At the top of the preface page, there is a stamp: "John T. Swift, Attorney At Law. Mr. Swift has also signed his signature on the flyleaf inside the front cover. John Tuttle Swift lived next door to Maplecroft, Lizzie's residence after her acquittal. He was also involved, as a lawyer, in some real estate transactions between Lizzie and another neighbor. The book is fragile, but it is the real thing - a relic of the Lizzie Borden saga. It was speculated that Lizzie attempted to buy up all copies of the book when it was published in order to destroy them. If true, not many escaped her net. Apparently Lizzie didn't know that a copy of the hated book lived right next door to Maplecroft. As may be seen in the photos, the front cover is loose, but not entirely separated from the binding. This book is not to be confused with the reprint published in 1985 by the King Philip Publishing Co. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Of his 27 operas, this is only his second comedy (the first was his second opera, Un giorno di regno). The work premiered at La Scala in Milan on 9 February 1893; it was published in its original Italian and in translations later that year.

Kipling, Rudyard, writer (1865-1936).
Naulakha, Brattleboro, Vermont, 20. XII. 1893. 8vo. 2 pp. To the American author William H. Rideing (1853-1918): "[.] I am in receipt of yours of the 18th instant suggesting a 2000-2500 w[ord] article for the Companion. Now that I have seen some of the mothers of the youths who read the paper I may perhaps be able to come nearer to its demands. It is very difficult for me to invent notions but I find in my notebooks the story of a young apprentice in the repairing shops of the E.I.R. [East Indian Railways] our Great Indian railroad. We will suppose he is 18 or 19 - sketch the life of the railway community and a railway town in India (Bengal) and make him mend and bring in, on one piston, a broken down loco. in flood time, as he is travelling to a volunteer rifle match. The tale would introduce the country-bred white of the Indian RR's - a parsee engine driver and so on - all the difference that there is between an American + an Indian line. I should prefer 3500 w[ords] to turn in but if you find that does not meet your approval kindly let me know and we will try something else. I used to know something of our Indian railway line. It’s community apart. Very many thanks for Sir E[dwin] Arnolds Jungle Life series. I am doing a set of tales on the same subject more or less for St Nicholas, giving the Jungle people’s views of mankind [.]". - Kipling's works of fiction include "The Jungle Book" (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"), the "Just So Stories" (1902), "Kim" (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). ELLIOTT, Maud Howe (ed.)
Paris & New York: Goupil & Co, and Boussod, Valadon & Co, 1893. Large octavo. Original dark blue cloth, bevelled boards, spine and front board decorated in gilt and silver, the front with an elaborate strapwork design by Alice Cordelia Morse, floral-patterned gilt endpapers, edges gilt. Spine ends and corners bumped, else a near-fine copy, the cloth particularly bright. Additional colour lithographed frontispiece by Madeleine Lemaire, numerous black and white photographic illustrations throughout. First edition, in the rarer blue variant binding, unsigned though attributed to the American Arts and Crafts designer Alice Cordelia Morse (1863-1961). It is more commonly seen in a mustard brown cloth, with the same decorative strapwork. Here, though the copy bears the Goupil imprint, the binding is lettered Rand, McNally & Co. of Chicago, publishers of the 1894 issue, suggesting this to be a variant binding. Having lobbied hard for an official place for women in the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, activists in Chicago succeeded in acquiring permission for the construction of a Woman's Building. It was designed by Sophia Hayden, aged twenty-one, the first female graduate of the four-year architecture programme at MIT, and was at that time the largest exhibition building funded and devoted to exhibits of women's work. This, the official handbook for the Woman's Building, was edited by Maud Howe Elliott (1854-1948), daughter of the abolitionist and suffragist Julia Ward Howe, and comprises thirty contributions from women — including an essay on women illustrators by Morse — w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arthur Conan Doyle
London: Very Good vintage book set now leather and marble boardsCOLLECTIBLE SIGNIFICANCE. ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE COLLECTOR EDITION A SCARCE SET OF CONAN DOYLE'S SECOND THREE DECKER, FIRST EDITION, CUSTOM BOUND This is Green & Gibson listing A12.a., one of only 1000 sets produced by Longmans, Green, & Co. for THE REFUGEES, 3 VOLUMES, 1893. Needless to say, the first edition of Doyle's second and last set of three books, or as commonly called, his "Three Decker," seldom come up for sale. Just a thousand sets were produced. To say this is a scarce set would be an understatement. As was the practice, sets were first offered up to the reading libraries, so few survived the rigors of that constant handling and mishandling, which explains the survival of leather bound sets over the original cloth bindings. This is one of the surviving leather sets in magenta half morocco and marbled boards bound without advertisements or original covers. The spines are tooled in gilt compartments and gilt top edges. Very minor rubbing to the leather extremities, edges, raised bands. Text blocks are pristine, without foxing. No other sets currently posted for sale anywhere. A BEAUTIFUL SET OF THIS SCARCE DOYLE LAST THREE DECKER, THE TRUE FIRST EDITION. U.S. postage rates recently changed, including Media Mail, Priority Mail and First Class Parcel. New York City: Antique Book A Millbrook Romance and Other Tales by A.L. Donaldson 1893. Hardcover, gilded, 155 pages, needs some restoration (the binding needs reinforcement). Dimensions approximately 5 x 7.5 inches. Minor creasing, light pencil writing on the inside page, one jacket blank page could be missing - see photos for detailed description. Published by Mr. Thomas Whittaker, at Nos. 2 and 3, Bible House, corner Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue, New York, 1893. The publisher is as rare/important in the item's value as the book itself. Publisher has own unique history. Reportedly, Library of Congress showed only 2 books in libraries. N.Y. Times Quote from: Book News., A Monthly Survey of General Literature, Volume XI, September 1892 to August 1893: A new writer whose work is so carefully done as to give promise of other things to his credit is Mr. Donaldson. His Millbrook Romance is one of several little short stories that fill this volume. It relates to a man who loved Helen from his boyhood until he was aged and never married her. Its rein of sentimentalism is of the Goethe kind. In pleasant contrast is another story, A Pair of Gloves, which leads one to ask why did not that fine looking young fellow, Alfred, kiss the pretty Gertrude while she appeared to sleep on the veranda. She was comely and there was his opportunity. Moreover, she was not actually asleep, and the author recalls the French maxim, that a neglected woman is vengeful. She quite expected to be kissed, and she taxed him with the matter. Maybe she already bought the pair of gloves that figured in the s … [Click Below for Full Description]
