The book of common prayer and administration of the sacraments and other rites and ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America together with the psalter or psalms of David.

New York: Pr. for the committee [by De Vinne Press] Folio (37 cm, 14.63"). [14] ff., 566 pp., [1 (tailpiece and publisher's colophon)] f.. 1893 When the Book of Common Prayer was revised in 1892, a first edition of five impressions (including the "standard edition") was immediately printed by the De Vinne Press. These differed in material and decoration, and this fourth, in folio, on paper, and with Art Nouveau borders designed by Daniel Updike and Bertram Goodhue, was sumptuous. Produced in 525 copies only, for subscribers and for presentation to designated libraries, its glory was exceeded only by that of the one-copy impression done from its same setting but entirely on vellum for the General Convention itself. The floral borders Updike produced for these pages vary with the season, feast, or service of the Church. For example, Ash Wednesday has a border of hyssop and Easter a border of lilies. The borders vary in richness according to the dignity of the feast or service being celebrated, and many of the borders incorporate scrolls inscribed with Latin quotations from Benedicite Omnia Opera Domini Domino, with a few from elsewhere in the the Prayer Book or the Bible. Provenance: There is a gift inscription on the front pastedown: "To the Rev. Hugh G.E. Crosby from the Warwick family with gratitude." Binding: Publisher's vellum over bevelled boards, front cover and spine ornately gilt-stamped and with heavy brass clasps. Gilt-stamped endpapers. The binding and endpapers are in a neo-gothic design by Bertram Goodhue and incorporate the first verse of the Benedicite, as well as employing rose and thistle badges and a rose pattern to denote the English and Scottish origins of the American Episcopal Church. Upper edge gilt, tail and fore-edge deckled. Affixed to one of the rear fly-leaves is: Updike, Daniel Berkeley. On the decorations of the limited edition of the standard prayer book of MDCCCXCII. New York: Pr. at the De Vinne Press, 1893. 4to (25.5 cm, 10"). [2] ff. Bound as above, corners bumped and vellum variably soil-darkened, rear cover with several long scrapes and front one with a few short and unobtrusive ones; front free endpaper chipped and discolored at points where it "took" pressure from the latches. Paper across hinges (inside) cracked, but binding strongly holding; to text, the odd spot of foxing or light soil only. The leaflet by Updike describing his work here is present, "tabbed" in at top left corner, with some discoloration to backing paper. => A very handsome book in a decent, pleasing, "good used" condition that makes it relatively affordable, with the pamphlet on the decorations.

Sylvie and Bruno ... London, Macmillan and Co. 1889. [With:] Sylvie and Bruno concluded ... London, Macmillan and Co. 1893.

2 vols., 8vo., pp. xxiii, [1 (blank)], 400, [4 (publisher's advertisements and blank)]; and pp. xxxi, [1 (blank)], 423, [7 (1 blank, 1 leaf lettered 'TURN OVER', and publisher's advertisements)]; wood-engraved frontispiece and 46 illustrations in the text in each volume after drawings by Harry Furniss; very good copies in the original red cloth, lettered and ruled in gilt, upper and lower boards with central gilt vignettes of Sylvie and Bruno respectively and, in Sylvie and Bruno concluded, of the Professor and the Chancellor; black endpapers (slight cracking to hinges), all edges gilt.First editions, presentation copies inscribed 'Lizzie Wilcox from her affte Cousin the Author / Dec. 12. 1889' and 'Lizzie Wilcox, from her affectionate Cousin the Author / Dec. 27, 1893' (two days before publication), a fine association: Lewis Carroll composed 'Jabberwocky' (Through the Looking Glass, pp. 21-4) 'while staying with his cousins, the Misses Wilcox, at Whitburn, near Sunderland. To while away an evening the whole party sat down to a game of verse-making, and "Jabberwocky" was his contribution' (Stuart Dodgson Collingwood, The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll, p. 143n.) The Preface to Sylvie and Bruno reminds the reader that two chapters reprint 'a little fairy-tale which I wrote in the year 1867, at the request of the late Mrs Gatty, for "Aunt Judy's Magazine" .... It was in 1874, I believe, that the idea first occurred to me of making it the nucleus of a longer story. As the years went on, I jotted down, at odd moments, all sorts of odd ideas, and fragments of dialogue .... I am telling you all this ... because I really believe that some of my readers will be interested in these details of the "genesis" of a book, which looks so simple and straight-forward.' Also in the Preface Carroll praises Furniss for his '(to my mind) wonderful pictures.'

Instructions Signaletiques

Melun: Imprimerie Administrative 1893 - Instructions Signaletiques by Alphonse Bertillon. Published by Melun: Imprimerie Administrative in 1893. French language. Size: 6 1/4 x 10 inches. Page number 148 plus 80 plates and three pull out charts. Hardcover. Black leather spine, marbled boards, gilt lettering and details. Marbled end papers. Within 30 photogravure plates, 52 line-drawn plates , two folding tables and a coloured fold out plate 'Tableau des Nuances de L'iris Humain'. Condition: Very Good. The boards are only a little worn. The binding remains tight with no cracks to the hinges. The pages are clean and un-thumbed, though a little tanned at the edges. One pull out chart is a little creased and is darkened and ragged at the leading edge. The pull out showing the iris is a damaged in one spot where something sticky has caused two sides of paper to stick together. A paste-down ownership label is on the first end paper, and a stamp from University College London on the last. Alphonse Bertillon, a Parisian policeman devised a method of measuring, photographing, and cataloging the variants in size, form and colour of the human body such that criminals could be identified and would be less likely to be confused one with the other. First published in 1886, this 1893 edition represents the final statement of his technique which became known as Bertillonage or forensic anthropometry. The revolutionary technique was widely taken up; becoming redundant only after the discovery of fingerprinting. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

WIDOWERS' HOUSES. A Comedy. First Acted by the Independent Theatre in London

Henry and Co. London. 1893. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Original blue buckram, lettered in gilt. Housed in a custom green cloth slipcase and chemise. Small bookplate to front pastedown, related bibiliographic material pasted to endpapers. Shaw's very scarce first play, published in an edition, according to Laurence, of "not more than 500" copies. It was not an overwhelming bestseller. Shaw wrote to John Lane (quoted in Laurence) that the publisher "never advertised it even once; and the sale, which was only effected by great perseverance & determination on the part of the purchasers, was 150 copies." When the publisher retired in December 1897, they ceded to Shaw 194 sets of unbound sheets, which Shaw claimed to have commissioned Sotheran & Co. to bind for him. "So few of these [in purple cloth] in the Sotheran binding have turned up, however, that it is unlikely Shaw had all of the copies bound; a considerable number must eventually have been pulped â?¦" Copies in green cloth have been noted as well, with no clear evidence of priority.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. O. O., 20. XII. 1893.

1893. 1 S. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

1893 - [inscribed to Helena deKay Gilder] and Other Tales. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1893. 6 pp undated ads. Original green cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition of this collection of eight tales from the coast of Maine. This is a very good copy (spine dulled with very slight wear at the head, front endpaper hinge reinforced with matching fabric tape). Blanck 10902.~THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, "To Mrs Gilder with best regards from Sarah O. Jewett Boston Dec 13th 1893". Furthermore, this volume bears the small booklabel "R.W. Gilder."~Richard Watson Gilder (1844-1909), after being a Union soldier in the Civil War, became a minor poet but a major editor (ultimately the managing editor of Scribner's Monthly); he was also a close friend of the Scottish writer George MacDonald, helping to organize his American tour in the 1870s. His wife, to whom this book is inscribed, was the former Helena de Kay (1846-1916) -- a talented painter, and a founder of the Society of American Artists. She modeled for, and was said to have been a love interest of, Winslow Homer. Later Wallace Stegner, in his 1971 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel ANGLE OF REPOSE, would controversially base the characters Thomas and Augusta Hudson on Gilder and de Kay.         The Metamorphosis, or Golden Ass, of Apuleius

(Birmingham): (W.J. Cosby, Universal Press), 1893. Beautifully bound fine press edition of Apuleius' comic masterpiece, one of five hundred copies on antique paper, this copy unnumbered. The picaresque tale of an aspiring magician who accidentally turns himself into an ass, The Golden Ass is the only ancient Roman novel to survive in its entirety, containing a number of famous set pieces, including the story of Cupid and Psyche: "Extending to her a cup of ambrosia, 'Take this . . . Psyche, and be immortal; nor shall Cupid ever depart from thy embrace.'" Some racier passages, excised from the main text, are retained in a "Passages Suppressed" supplement bound at the end of the volume. This edition is a reissue of Robert Triphook's London edition of 1822, translated by the Neoplatonist Thomas Taylor, who considered Apuleius "undoubtedly the greatest of the ancient Latin Platonists." The whimsical inlaid design binding is the work of Whitman Bennett, New York bookbinder, bibliophile, and film producer. A near-fine example of a comic classic, beautifully bound. Octavo, full modern olive morocco lettered and single-ruled in gilt, raised bands, tree branch design stamped in blind to front board and spine, gold morocco onlays in the shape of a donkey's ears on front board and donkey's tail on spine, Greek-patterned gilt dentelles with flower cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, all other edges uncut.
