PLAN OF THE ALDERMASTON COURT ESTATE IN THE PARISHES OF ALDERMASTON, PADWORTH & MORTIMER, BERKSHIRE. FOR SALE BY MESSRS. SIMMONS & SONS, 1893’. Very large detailed sales plan for the whole estate reaching around Aldermaston from River Kennet to Pamber Heath. Privately published by the estate agents after a survey by W. Wing and printed by

      H. E. Greenslade in Reading 1893 - 96x60cm. Previously folded. Printed in soft one-tone colour. Very good condition. Aldermaston Manor was built in 1851 in place of the previous Manor House, which was destroyed by fire. In 1985 the Aldermaston Park site was bought by Blue Circle Industries and the House converted into a hotel and conference centre. Again in 2014 the site and house were bought by a property investment company with planning permission to add more offices. - It is very unlikely that many or any of these sales plans have survived.

Fine long Autograph Letter Signed to Butler, the father of his young friend Olive Butler (Lewis, Charles Dodgson, 1832-1898, Author of 'Alice in Wonderland')

1893 - explaining "an (apparent) liberty which I propose to take this week, in sending Olive a copy of 'Sylvie and Bruno Concluded'. Without some explanation it might look like a sort of 'feeler' towards renewing negotations as to being allowed to try to establish a friendship with her. So let me assure you that I have no such idea, and that I still abide loyally by the decision to which you and Mrs Butler have come ." he continues that it would be "a great pity, for no better reason than that you and I hold different views as to the expediency of friendships between old gentlemen and young ladies, to leave my gift incomplete ." and he hopes that Olive will be allowed to accept Volume II, he ends with his wishes for Christmas, 3 sides 8vo., The Chestnuts, Guildford, 25th December Dodgson made a game for Olive and inscribed it to her "from the White Knight Nov 21 1892". Perhaps that was when her parents decided that the relationship should be ended. He had evidently already given her the first volume of Sylive and Bruno.

Superb inscribed Tableau Vivant 'Flash Light' photo representing 'The New Year', by Hughes & Mullins, (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain)

1893 - the image shows her daughter Princess BEATRICE (Mary Victoria Feodore, 1857-1944) surrounded by her daughter Princess VICTORIA EUGENIE ('ENA', 1887-1969, wife of Alfonso XIII of Spain) and her nieces MARGARET (1882-1920, Princess of Connaught, 'Daisy', Crown Princess of Sweden) & PATRICIA (Princess of Connaught, 1886-1974, 'Patsy', later Lady Patricia Ramsay), they are all dressed as angels with Ena standing above the group which is artistically posed among clouds. underneath the Queen has written "Lady Adela Cochrane, Daisy, Patsy, Ena, Auntie Beatrice, Miss de Horsey, New Year 1893", stamped 'carbon print' on the verso, 10" x 8", no place, (Osborne, Isle of Wight), January A glorious image with a wonderful inscription. The practice of the Household performing tableau vivants over the New Year was revived some time after the death of the Prince Consort. There were normally several scenes, each representing a letter or word, followed by a final scene depicting the entire word. The Tableau often reproduced paintings - a particularly successful one being 'La Rixe' (The Brawl) after the painting by E. Meissonier which had been given to the Prince Consort in 1856. The scene was a quarrel in a tavern which Queen Victoria considered 'a truthful presentation of the picture'. They were not always so well received - a biblical tableau of Naomi and Ruth in 1888 was described by the Queen as 'not quite so successful as it might have been, owing to the ladies getting the giggles and shaking'. The Tableau Vivant photo is an unusual form of photography, which Queen Victoria had a passion for from the 1850s. This is one of the later ones which are more difficult to find as the majority of them have remained in Royal Collections. From the collection of Lady Patricia Ramsay, daughter of the Duke of Connaught.

The Works of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte in Twelve Volumes

London : J M Dent and Company, 1893 A good set of the Bronte works in 12 volumes, with 37 black and white plates. This set is part of a limited Large Paper Edition, of which 150 were published in the UK and 100 in the US. It is no 65. The hand made paper is particularly high quality and is hall marked 'Spalding'. The illustrations are by B S Grieg, with decorative headpieces and title pages by F C Tilney. Each volume has a front pastedown endpaper with a design and space for the owner to write their name. The wording states that 'this volume is one of the first issue of this edition..'. This set does not have ownership marks. There is an initial blank, a half title for the series, note on the edition number, black and white tissue-guarded frontispiece, decorative title page in red and black, illustration list and text - with additions depending on the volume. Each volume has 2 further plates in the text, apart from Vol I, which has 3. The paper has a trimmed but slightly rough top edge, with the remainder of edges untrimmed. The tan cloth bindings with gilt titles to spine are in good clean condition. All have darkened spines - an odd reaction to light. They are all slightly pulled and the corners are all slightly bumped with slight edge wear. The contents are exceptionally clean: the paper is still white and there are very few marks. The plate paper is different, and tends to spotting (first few volumes) and browning (later volumes). The tissue guards are browned and this sometimes offsets to the opposing text page. All tend to have browned free endpapers. Volumes: Jane Eyre Vol I - additional plate - frontispiece portrait of Charlotte Bronte; page of Charlotte Bronte's signatures; brief note on CB; list of works about the Brontes; dedication to Thackeray; Preface; Note to 3rd edition; text 312pp with 3 plates. Vol II - Jane Eyre Vol II: 288 pp. Vol III - Shirley Vol I: 363 pp. Vol IV - Shirley Vol II: 352pp - noticeable warp to front board. Vol V - Villette Vol I: 327 pp including appendix. Vol VI - Villette Vol II: 322 pp including appendix. Vol VII - The Professor: author's preface; 292 pp including appendix. Vol VIII - the Poems - including Cottage Poems by Patrick Bronte: poems with notes and half titles 246pp. Vol IX - Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey Vol I - biographical note on Ellis and Acton Bell; Editor's Preface; 279pp. Vol X - Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey Vol II: 307pp. Vol XI - The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Vol I: 267pp. Vol XII - The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Vol II: 268pp. Please enquire if you would like to see further images to assess condition.

Superb collection of signatures (Mark, 1835-1910, pseudonym of Samuel L. Clemens, American Author of Tom Sawyer), Sarah BERNHARDT (1844-1923, Actress, 'The Divine Sarah'), Pietro MASCAGNI (1863-1945, Italian Composer), Gerhart HAUPTMANN (1862-1946, German Dramatist & Novelist, Nobel Prizewinner, 1912), Hermann SUDERMANN (1857-1928, German Novelist and Playwright), Ruggero LEONCAVALLO (1857-1919, Italian Composer), Bronislaw HUBERMAN (1882-1947, Polish Violinist), Ernest van DYCK (1861-1923, Belgian Wagnerian Tenor), Vasily VERESHCHAGIN (1842-1904, Russian Artist of the horrors of war, here in German spelling 'W. Werestchagin'), Franz von LENBACH (1836-1904, German Painter) & Felix DAHN (1834-1912, German Historian & Novelist)

1893 - (with a few others, including one partly with original smudge, the rest excellent), on a silk fan with dark wood spokes and the owner's fine silver monogram 'H [von] G' under a heraldic coronet of five pearls, the fan was made in Vienna where most of the signatures were collected, a few at St Moritz, Gastein, Salzburg or Munich, they range from Sarah Bernhardt in 1893, Mark Twain in Vienna 1897 through to Felix Dahn in 1901, Gebrüder Rodeck, Vienna, circa beautifully framed and glazed with museum glass Mark Twain (Nov. 8 1897) and his family had settled in Vienna for the winter at the Hotel Metropole, where their apartment became a kind of 'social clearing house' for literary and artistic people. At a time when tensions in the Empire were growing, Austrians of progressive thought were not exactly encouraged, and the signatures reflect the welcome given in society to distinguished foreigners. Sarah Bernhardt (1893) had made extended tours since 1891 to Australia, North and South America, and the chief capitals of Europe. In October 1893 she took over the Renaissance theatre in Paris under her reforming management – no prompter, no claque. Pietro Mascagni (9th November 1895) was only 26 when he wrote Cavalleria Rusticana (1890). He brought a new 'realism' to the stage, (revolutionary in the Italian opera), as did Gerhart Hauptmann (28th December 1895) and Hermann Sudermann (12th November 1895) with their plays. The latter's Heimat ('Home', 1891) had questioned unfeeling traditional morality. Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse performed it as Magda in London in 1895 in rival productions. Ruggero Leoncavallo (7th December 1897) had shot to fame in 1892 in Milan with Pagliacci, a tribute to verismo with his own libretto. His second opera, his version of La Bohème, competing with Puccini's but reflecting the whole story of the original novel, had premièred in Venice on 6th May 1898. Now he was trying to arrange a performance in Vienna, which took place in February 1898, rather against the wishes of Gustav Mahler, who was standing in for director Jahn. Bronislaw Huberman (St Moritz, 23rd September (?) 1895) had outshone Patti at her farewell concert in Vienna on 22nd January 1895. He returned to Vienna in October 1895 and there, on 29th January 1896, Brahms was overcome by the 13-year old's playing of his Violin Concerto. Ernest van Dyck (14th November 1895), following an outstanding appearance at Bayreuth in 1888, was engaged by the Vienna Opera, where he stayed for nine years. Vasily Vereshchagin (November 1897) was one of the first Russian artists to be widely known outside his country. Living in Germany, he painted symbolic pictures with almost photographic realism. Von Moltke, after seeing his 1882 exhibition in Berlin, forbade German soldiers to visit it, and the Austrian government reacted similarly. Franz von Lenbach (Munich, 1896) was the accomplished 'realist' painter and portraitist of some of the most famous people of the time. He signs within a flourish shaped like a palette and brushes. Felix Dahn (22nd December 1901), now rector of the university at Breslau, capital of Prussian Silesia, was a household name for his historical romances and his poems, epics of the German peoples from the mists of time. Meticulously researched, they gave an immediacy to what were previously disjointed memories. The slightly smudged signature (Salzburg, 23rd September 1901) we think is (Gustav) Adolph von Meng-T[rimmis], (1865-1957, Swiss Artist), or a near relation.

Adventures in Australia Fifty Years Ago...

London: Swan Sonnenschein, 1893. Octavo, 368pp., colour folding map and 14 plates; maroon cloth, gilt title to spine, A compelling and vivid autobiographical narrative of travels in colonial Australia.John Demarr, a Yorkshire farmer, arrived in Sydney in 1839 and travelled extensively through Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland working variously as a drover, storeman and stockman. The work is replete with vignettes of rural life in Australia and descriptions of the prevailing economic and social conditions. Demarr, a sympathetic observer, shows an uncharacteristic concern for the convicts and native population: 'I have gone up to a black's fire, where three or four were seated, filling my pipe with tobacco; at once, one or two would rise, and offer me a fire stick, with which to light the pipe. How many boors are there in England, either in town or country, who would do such a thing, or even think of doing it?'Generously illustrated and lucidly written, this is a charming narrative as well as a valuable item of Australian social history. It is worth noting that the List of Illustrations calls for 15 plates (14 plates including the frontispiece and one textual illustration); there is also a folding map. A little wear to the extremities and small stain to the front board else very good.

Lytton Strachey Reading. Original full length pencil portrait of Lytton Strachey sitting in a chair reading, 11 x 9 ½ inches, unsigned and undated but circa 1930

Dora Carrington, or Carrington as she was known, was born in 1893 and attended the Slade School of Art from 1910-1914. There a number of her fellow students, notably Mark Gertler, C. R. W. Nevinson, Paul and John fell in love with her. Many more were to follow in their hopeful footsteps during her lifetime, among them Aldous Huxley, but most famously and steadfastly Lytton Strachey, whom she met and fell in love with in 1915. For the next seventeen years, Carrington and Strachey would remain devoted to each other, despite the differences in their sexual orientations, and live together from 1917 until Strachey's death in 1932. In 1921, when Carrington married Reginald "Ralph" Partridge, Strachey paid for the wedding and accompanied the newlyweds on their honeymoon to Venice. In 1924, he purchased Ham Spray House in Wiltshire for the ménage a trois, with the deed for the house in Partridge's name. Carrington's marriage to Partridge collapsed in 1928, and she continued to live at Ham Spray House with Strachey until 1932, when Strachey died of stomach cancer. Two months later, unable to imagine life without Strachey, Carrington shot herself with a gun borrowed from Bryan Guiness. As an artist, Carrington was not well known as an artist during her lifetime beyond her immediate circle of friends and acquaintances, although the woodblock prints she made for the Omega Workshops and the Hogarth Press were highly regarded. Today, her portraits and landscapes, which she refused to sign or exhibited, have elicited renewed interest and admiration. In 1995, Carrington was the subject of the film of the same name starring Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce, who won the Cannes Film Festival's award for best actor for his role as Lytton Strachey. On the back of the frame is the label of Anthony d'Offay. A splendid memento. Framed and glazed.

Aux Indes et en Australie dans le yacht le "Sunbeam"...

Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1893. Quarto, with many illustrations, some taken from photographs, gilt edges, in the original ornately pictorial cloth, with pretty decoration in silver and gilt. Fine copy of the first French edition, which puts the English edition of 1890 quite in the shade. It is scarce - and is not in fact recorded by Ferguson - although almost half the book is devoted to the Australian portion of the voyage.Lord and Lady Brassey made several cruises around the world in their yacht Sunbeam. Lady Brassey's account of their earlier voyage published in 1879 was very popular and went through numerous editions. Her last voyage was undertaken in 1886-7: she died before the cruise was completed and her grieving husband completed her work for publication. He later authorised this French version, which was translated by Gaston Bonnefont. The many fine plates and illustrations are after designs by R.T. Pritchett, and engraved by Whymper, Cooper and Pearson. There are almost too many to comment on - more than 200 in total - but the work is particularly rich with nautical scenes, as well as charming vignettes ranging from street scenes to details of Australian and Pacific natural history. Neat repairs to gutter at front endpapers; a few spots but a fine copy.

Journal of the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1891.

Adelaide: House of Assembly, 1893. Folio, with two large colour folding maps; uncut in recent cloth. One of only 750 copies published: this rare printing is not recorded by Ferguson.Sir Thomas Elder, who had earlier financed the first great desert journey of Ernest Giles, in 1891 fitted out the expedition of David Lindsay, the celebrated Northern Territory explorer and surveyor general. In 1883 Lindsay had led an expedition into Arnhem Land, travelling to the Gulf of Carpentaria. He went on to explore extensively in the MacDonnell Ranges region before his last and most important work, this scientifically equipped expedition made possible by the sole support of Sir Thomas Elder. The object of the expedition was to explore the unknown interior of Western Australia between the routes laid out by Forrest in 1874 and Giles in 1875 'for the purpose of completing the exploration of Australia'.Lindsay's expedition arrived in Geraldton in January 1892, besieged by internal conflict: the entire scientific team, except for Lawrence Allen Wells, resigned. This marked an abrupt end to David Lindsay's career as an explorer and closed down an expensive expedition that produced very few new discoveries. This is the official report by the leader of the expedition, complete with maps. It predates the first public edition printed by C.E. Bristow. Published by order of the South Australian House of Assembly on 3 October 3 1893 at a cost of ninety seven pounds, four shillings and seven pence plus over thirty-three pounds for the lithography of the large folding maps. In the summary of the work Lindsay states that the expedition travelled 2,745 miles through unexplored country, whilst 80,000 square miles was explored and mapped. 'The abandoment of the expedition was a terrible disappointment to me. That men had so little sense of duty to their leader and to their generous employer should have been the primary cause of the break up of such a splendidly-equipped expedition...'. A very good copy.

Strange, But True. Life and Adventures of Captain Thomas Crapo and Wife.

New Bedford: Capt. Thomas Crapo, c. 1893. Small octavo, with illustrations; in the original brown cloth. The short-handed sailor Thomas Crapo enjoyed sudden fame for his gruelling transatlantic crossing in a 19 foot dory, accompanied by his new wife. The seven-week voyage resulted in a publicity and show tour for the couple that lasted several years. Crapo self-published this ghosted autobiography in 1893, and turned eventually to the coastal cargo trade until May 1899 when in an attempt to repeat his former triumphs he left New Bedford in a 9 foot dinghy, bound for Cuba. His body was recovered off Charleston some time later. Mrs C. was left penniless and re-issued her late husband's 'autobiography' to raise funds. The reissue is not identified on the title-page but may be identified by the fact that it ends on p. 151 with Mrs. Crapo's description of his demise. This re-issue is much scarcer than the first edition; this copy was signed on the title-page by Joanna Crapo in 1904. A very good copy.

[MOON LANDING IN 1893] Na lune. Fantasticheskaya povest' [i.e. On the Moon. Fantastic Tale] / with original drawings by Gofman

Moscow: I.D. Sytin, 1893. 48 pp.: ill. 21x14,5 cm. Contemporary quarter-leather. Owner's stamp on the title page and bookplate on the endpaper. Spine is slightly rubbed, otherwise very good. First edition. Second book by the author. Extremely rare with no copies found in the Worldcat. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), one of the founding fathers of space science, is well-known for his astronautic theory. His research allowed rocket scientists after him to perform space travel. But as important as his scientific works are his cosmist beliefs in the ability of intergalactic travels and inhabiting other planets. That altogether makes Konstantin Tsiolkovsky one of the most unorthodox and advanced scientists of his time. This piece that was created simultaneously with his thesis 'Maneuverable Metal Aerostat' could be just an early example of Russian science fiction - a story of two men going to the moon to explore it. But it should not be forgotten that it was written by a man who was partly responsible for the real people appearing on the moon some 70 years later. The book doesn't bear any scientific materials, only Tsiolkovsky's vision of a man's experience on the moon.

Columbus Outdone! Capt. Andrews' Cruise in the Sapolio.

New York: Enoch Morgan's Sons Company, 1893. Octavo, folding map and folding plate, illustrated throughout; in original illustrated brown cloth, flyleaf inscribed and signed by the author. Signed presentation copy in original illustrated cloth, detailing the audacious solo transatlantic crossing of William Andrews in 1892. Andrews has previously completed a crossing in a vessel of some twenty feet (see previous item), but evidently found it too commodious - perhaps because there was enough room for his brother. This time, he set out in a considerably smaller vessel of 14 feet 6 inches christened the Sapolio. Entirely hand-made by Andrews, this delicate boat of canvas stretched upon a cedar frame began her courageous voyage from Atlantic City in New Jersey on July 21, 1892, arriving at the point of Columbus' departure in Spain some 63 days later. This book includes the journal kept by Andrews, with descriptions and illustrations of the Azores where the Sapolio anchored during the voyage. This copy, with a signed inscription by Andrews, was issued as a souvenir for the Chicago World's Fair - a spectacular exhibition of innovation and commerce staged to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of the Americas in 1492. Spine ends a little rubbed, front endpaper slightly chipped, very good.

The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane. [Translated from the French by William Morris].

16mo. ; choicely bound by E. Rau of St. Petersburg in full orange crushed morocco, lettered in gilt on spine, boards with a semi of stylized flowers within a single gilt and dog tooth panel, central initial of "W" on upper board and "M" on lower board, richly gilt inner dentelles over marbled endpapers; pp. [iv] + 96 + colophon; double-page woodcut border, text printed in black and red in the Chaucer type. A fine copy in slipcase. 350 copies were printed, with an additional 15 copies on vellum. Of the 360 copies 76 copies were purchased in sheets by J. and M.L. Tregaskis and sent to bookbinders throughout the world, the object being to mount an international exhibition of bookbinding. The 73 copies which were actually bound, and displayed at the exhibition in 1894, are now in the John Rylands Library, Manchester. The one example from Russia in the exhibition was bound by E. Rau of St Petersburg and this copy is similar in design to the copy submitted for the exhibition and now in the Rylands Collection. The bindings both have a pattern of flowers across the boards although the tools used are of different sizes and frequency. The Tregaskis copy repeats the flower pattern on the spine but on this copy the gilt work on the spine is in panels. William Morris's initials are reversed on the two copies. The Tregaskis copy has "M" on the upper board and "W" on the lower; this copy has "W" on the upper board and "M" on the lower. As the Tregaskis copy was to be exhibited with the boards facing out the initials would therefore have read "W" "M". This is possibly a trial copy that Rau chose not to send as his exhibition piece but it seems more likely that it was a second copy commissioned by a collector who saw the Tregaskis copy in the exhibition or the exhibition catalogue. This supposition is supported by the provenance of the book. This copy has the bookplate of Frank Howell on the front paste-down and of American collector Charles Walker Andrews on the front free endpaper. Loosely inserted is a typed letter from J. & M.L. Tregaskis to Frank Howell advertising the upcoming catalogue of the bindings in the exhibition. Howell, we presume, liked Rau's binding and commissioned him to bind up another copy in similar style. As this second copy was not commissioned as an exhibition piece, Rau reversed the initials on the boards to a more logical "W" on the upper board and "M" on the lower.
