In the Key of Blue and Other Prose Essays

London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1893. First edition. 302, [2], [16, ads] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. In the rare trial blue binding that the author disliked so much, stamped in gilt. Bookplate of Franklin and Helen Hadduck. Front hinge starting, flyleaf detached, fine otherwise. First edition. 302, [2], [16, ads] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. In the Rare Blue Binding. Notes Nelson: Among his Bodley Head books Ricketts' cover for In the Key of Blue is his most bizarre excursion into the elaborate realm of art nouveau design. The extremely curvacious but graceful pattern of laurel and hyacinths was stamped in gold on a blue cloth in the trial issue, but the regular edition was bound in a rich cream color when the designer protested that critics would otherwise be tempted to refer to the binding as "Ricketts blue." Nelson, The Early Nineties, pp. 74-5; Stetz and Samuels Lasner, England in the 1890s: Literary Publishing at the Bodley Head, no. 25; Krishnamurti / The Eighteen-Nineties, a Literary Exhibition, no. 642; Paul van Capelleveen, A new checklist of Books Designed by Cha rl es Ricketts & Charles Shannon, no.         The Mummy. Chapters on Egyptian Funereal Archaeology.

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1893. Inscribed First Edition. Octavo, pp.xvi, 404. Bound in the publisher's red cloth, with gilt stamp of Mestha (otherwise known as Imseti) to front board, double-ruled blind panneling to boards, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine; deckled edges, newspaper insert pasted in to front flyleaf, bookplate to front pastedown. With eighty-eight illustrations, in a variety of styles (including photogravure), several of them fold-out, and a list of heiroglyphics.Binding is rubbed; worn and frayed at spine ends, bumped at corners, sunning to spine, and with tidemark to bottom left sixth of upper board, some small tears to proud deckle edges. Internally clean, with author's ink inscription to "Rev Henry Blunt, from the writer" in 1893 to first blank, tidemark to front lower right hand of front paste down, corresponding to tidemark on upper board, short ink notation to rear pastedown concerning Amen Ra in the same hand that labels and dates the review of The Mummy pasted in to the front fly, from the Pall Mall Gazette. Pictorial bookplate, "From the Middle East and Egyptological Library" of Robert William Morrell, MBE (co-founder of the Thomas Paine Society).Budge was one of the most significant early British Egyptologists, who wrote a number of standard works on the history of Egypt and Assyria at the turn of the twentieth century, though these have since been superseded by the work of modern Egyptologists, whose research with the assistance of modern technologies and with the advent of further discoveries in Egypt, have rendered a number of his conclusions unsupportable. The Mummy is a work of admirable scholarship, synthesising scholarship in German, French, and English, to giver perspective on the religious rites and means of preservation used in the process of mummification. The figure on the front board, Mestha or Imseti, was one of the four sons of Horus, venerated as a funerary god, and who appears as a human head on the lid of the canopic jar used to store the liver.

MANUSCRIPT LYRICS FOR THE SECOND VERSE OF "MARYLAND, MY MARYLAND," THE OFFICIAL STATE SONG OF MARYLAND

[Washington, DC 1893 - An eight-line stanza from Randall's poem, in manuscript, signed by Randall, copied onto a single sheet of letterhead stationery from the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads, United States Senate, and dated Washington, D.C., Oct. 21, 1893, matted onto a larger sheet of plain paper. This stanza reads: "Hark to an exiled son's appeal, Maryland! / My Mother-State, to thee I kneel, Maryland! / For life and death, for woe and weal, / Thy peerless chivalry reveal, / And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel, Maryland! My Maryland!" Faint old fold lines, a bit of spotting at right margin, else a nice example. Apparently Randall was responding to a request for a hand-written copy of his poem. Ryder, a native Marylander, composed this poem in April 1861, after Union troops marched through Baltimore. A Confederate sympathizer teaching in Louisiana at the time, Ryder was outraged by this event which caused rioting and deaths in the city, including the death of a close friend, and penned this song which begins "The despot's heel is on thy shore, Maryland." It became a popular battle hymn throughout the south during the Civil War when it was set to the tune of "Lauriger Horatius" by Jennie Cary, a member of Baltimore society. It was later adopted as the official Maryland state song in 1939. Ryder was often called the "Poet Laureate of the Lost Cause." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Le Morte D'Arthur (Bound By The Chelsea Bindery)

First edition: Two volumes. One of 1500 sets of the 'ordinary issue' published by J.M. Dent in 1893 (there are also 300 sets printed on Van Gelder paper). The BOOKS are in Very Good++ or better condition. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Some toning to the pages edges and minor edge wear to the page edges in a few places with in Vol. 2, a repair to a small closed tear on the verso of the lower edge of the colophon page and a small area of loss to the lower edge of the title page. Two frontispieces with some offsetting of these to the facing pages and 18 full page wood engravings (including five double-page), numerous text illustrations, and approximately 350 designs for chapter headings and borders, all by Aubrey Beardsley. Both volumes have been lavishly rebound by The Chelsea Bindery in full black morocco with five raised bands. Re-gilding of the top edges with gilt titling and decoration to the spines, covers and interior borders. Beautiful marbled endpapers with two further blank endpapers to the front and rear in both volumes. The binding remains tight in both volumes. Very minimal rubbing to the gilt decoration in places. An exquisite set of Beardsley's masterpiece. Always an avid reader Beardsley frequented London's antiquarian book shops, where he forged a friendship with book shop owner, Frederick Evans. Evans admired Aubrey's work and introduced him to a fellow customer, publisher J.M. Dent. Dent was planning a beautifully illustrated version of Malory's Morte D'Arthur, along the lines of some of Morris's Kelmscott Press books, but using a less expensive printing process. Loath to pay the elevated fee William Morris would charge for this commission, Dent was persuaded to employ Aubrey Beardsley. To help secure this commission Beardsley drew 'The Achieving of the Sangreal'. The images drawn for this volume remain the artist's most striking work and have not been equalled by any of his many disciples. Beardsley's life was tragically short with him dying of tuberculosis at the age of 26. In those few years he managed however to leave a great and lasting artistic legacy. A beautiful set.

A Selection of Photographs of Stars,

1893. ASTRONOMY. A Selection of Photographs of Stars, Star-clusters and Nebulae, together with Information concerning the Instruments and the Methods employed in the Pursuit of Celestial Photography. By Isaac Roberts. 134 pp. Illustrated with 53 photographic illustrations. Folio, 305 x 225 mm, bound in publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering. London: Universal Press, 1893. |~||~||~||~||~| A geologist and fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Isaac Roberts (1829-1904) made significant contributions to the photography of star-clusters and nebulae. By championing reflecting rather than refracting telescopes, Roberts was able to perceive previously unnoticed star-clusters, and was the first to identify the spiral shape of the Great Andromeda Nebula. Roberts' use of a telescope for photographing stars, and a long exposure time, provided greater definition of stellar phenomena than previously used hand-drawings. Although Roberts' conclusions about the nature of the nebulae he photographed were not always correct, the book is significant for the possibilities it suggests for nebular photography. Published in London in 1893 and 1899, the two-volume Photographs of Stars represents the summation of his work with his assistant W. S. Franks at his observatory in Crowborough, Sussex. This volume contains 53 collotype plates of stars, and descriptions of his instruments and methods. Expert repairs to spine, a studied volume with a few of the plates marked with a black pen, a good copy..

[Photo Album]: New England and Shriner's Party

Massachusetts, Maine, Texas, Mexico. 1893-1907. Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 11". Brown cloth over paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 83 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 5" and 4.5" x 6.5" with captions. Very good photo album with tape repairs on the front board, tears, and slight bowing with near fine photographs.A photo album beginning around 1893 compiled by Mrs. Albert S. Long (Katherine Long) of Lawrence, Massachusetts with her card laid in. Her husband was a contractor and carpenter in the area and a member of the Shriners. The album begins with 18 cyanotypes of the family home, exterior and interior, dinner parties, their horse and carriage, and a group lounging on the porch. These also include cyanotypes of both Christmas 1893 and Christmas 1894 with images of their Christmas trees and the gifts placed underneath and on the trees. The Long's vacationed on Peake Island, Maine in 1895 with photos of Casco Bay, their vacation cottage, and sailing. One photo from this trip is trick image captioned "I want to shake hands with myself" and shows a photo of a man photo edited to look like he was facing himself. The album shows photos of Albert's work and the Long's favorite places and friends around New England. One of these photos is of a large house with a fence which is captioned, "the first school house Albert built." Other photos include Merrimack Falls and Lake, a friend's dinner party, and Tarbox School. The Long's were very interested in the warships that would dock in the area and photographed them. One of these photo shows the U.S.S. Raleigh in Casco Bay which was used during the Spanish American War and later World War I. Other warships include the Montgomery, the New York, and the Minneapolis. A photo captioned, "on board the warship" shows personnel and passengers milling about on the upper deck. Later photos from 1906 show the Longs with their new automobile posing around a dirt road. The final section of 40 photographs is from a Shriner's party the Long's were a part of during 1907. The group traveled around the United States and to Mexico and the West on a train visiting a variety of places and landmarks. They visited the Whirlpool rapids in Canada near Niagara Falls and the Niagara Falls bridge. The party is seen here in fancy dress and in elaborate hats posed in the rocks by the rapids. There is also an image taken of the Shriners on board the train. As they traveled West they photographed the homes of Mexicans in El Paso and horseback riding. The trip also took them to Arizona where they visited the Grand Canyon and Hopi Indian pueblos. One of these photos shows a small "Indian" boy with the canyon in the background. They continued on to California and took photos of the Pacific Ocean, palm trees, and a clam bake they attended. Katherine photographed Texas and Mexico and included a Bull Ring, a Mexican market, and a mission with men in large Mexican hats in the foreground. A remarkably attractive and interesting collection of both domestic and travel snapshot photography, many of the images are a bit larger than usual size, most likely taken by a well-to-do New England young woman. .

        Program signed (Grant Memorial Banquet)

1893. Signed. LONGSTREET, James. Grant Memorial Banquet. [Philadelphia]: no publisher, 1893. Octavo, heavy coated paper boards, ribbon-bound as issued; pp. 4. $3800.Original lithographed souvenir program from 1893, featuring a hand-colored image of GrantÂ’s Virginia headquarters on the front, signed by two notable Civil War generals, Oliver Howard and James Longstreet.Banquets on the anniversary of Ulysses S. GrantÂ’s birthday were an annual tradition in many American cities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The notables who offered toasts at this particular dinner, held at an unspecified location (but most likely in Philadelphia) on what would have been GrantÂ’s 71st birthday, included former Union General Oliver Howard and former Confederate General James Longstreet, both of whom signed this souvenir program in pencil beneath their printed names. Howard, whom President Johnson appointed to lead the FreedmanÂ’s Bureau after the war, would leave the army in 1894 to again “turn his energies to educating a neglected population, that of southern Appalachia. The funds he raised helped establish Lincoln Memorial University” (ANB). For his part, Longstreet had by this time long been “frozen out of the circle of Confederate heroes” because of his switch to the Republican Party; five years after this dinner, he would receive “the sinecure position of United States commissioner of railroads as a reward for his support of William McKinley” (ANB). Apparently, engravers from the noted silversmith firm of Bailey, Banks & Biddle in Philadelphia created the illustrations for this program. The recto of the front board bears a hand-colored print from a stone engraving of GrantÂ’s headquarters at City Point, Virginia; the menu is on the verso, adorned with a small image of GrantÂ’s sword. The American flag and a memorial scroll decorate the list of speakers on the recto of the rear board, and a pale blue shield on the verso lists the dinnerÂ’s organizing committees, chaired by Mayor Edwin Stuart of Philadelphia, at that time the youngest man to hold the office. One tiny and inoffensive spot to verso of rear board. A scarce piece of postbellum Americana, signed and very nearly fine.

This edition was designed to treat ShakespeareÂ’s work “as that of a dramatist, whose plays were intended not to be read as poetical exercises, but to be represented by living men and women before a general audience.” With handsome full-page engravings by Gordon Browne, as well as numerous in-text line cuts. First issued in 1888-1890. See Jaggard, 551. A beautiful set in fine condition.

A remarkably attractive and interesting collection of both domestic and travel snapshot photography, many of the images are a bit larger than usual size, most likely taken by a well-to-do New England young woman. .

Lady Windermere's Fan. A Play About a Good Woman

Elkin Mathews and John Lane, London 1893 - Oscar Wilde's first society comedy, written in 1892 and produced by George Alexander, the manager of St James's Theatre. The play, about a woman "with a past" attempting to reestablish herself in society, was Wilde's first dramatic success, and re-affirmed his place in fashionable circles. This period of acclaim lasted for only 3 years, following which Wilde suffered through his trial for homosexuality and subsequent imprisonment. This volume belonged to Sibyl, Lady Colefax, the well known British society decorator, with her signature at the ffep, 'Sibyl Halsey'. Sibyl, Lady Colefax (1874 - 1950) was born Sibyl Halsey, and was the niece of Walter Bagehot. She settled in Kent, after the 1929 Crash becoming a professional decorator. She bought the decorating division of the antique dealers Stair and Andrew of Bruton Street, Mayfair, and discovered John Fowler when he was running the painted furniture department at Peter Jones. She set up Sibyl Colefax Ltd in partnership with Peggy Ward, the Countess Munster; the firm exists today as Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler.8vo, 132pp, 14pp of advertisements titled 'List of Books in Belles Lettres'.         Suez-Cide!! or, How Miss Britannia bought a dirty puddle and lost her sugar-plums.

John Snow & Co. 1876 [1893] Sl. marking to fore-edge of p. 7. Orig. glazed printed pink paper wrappers, sewn as issued; sl. dulled. 20pp. v.g.Miller & Matthews B6.3; a forgery of the first edition. With minor typographical differences throughout including the asterisks on pages 7 and 10 having 8 radii, instead of 6 in the genuine first edition; page 8 line 11 has 'Anthony?' instead of 'Antony' and page 11 line 19 has the printing error 'ust' instead of 'just'. Miller and Matthews note that copies of this forged edition were offered to a number of antiquarian bookdealers by a 'Mrs A. Sinclair' in May 1893. The forgery was exposed in the Clique with the bookdealer John H. Ashworth identified as the perpetrator. Although attempts were made to pursue a conviction no prosecution was forthcoming. 'The forged edition is now almost as much of a rarity as the original, and has frequently been mistaken for it. Indeed, despite clumsy slips and swift exposure, the deception must be considered a success, from the frequency with which the forged copies have been, and still are, described as genuine'.
