Jane Annie or the Good Conduct Prize A New and Original English Comic Opera Written by J.M. Barrie & A. Conan Doyle... Arranged from the full score by King Hall. Vocal Score, Price 5/net. [Piano-vocal score]

London: Chappell [PN 19458], 1893. First Edition. Green and Gibson Appendix III, p. 614. CPM (copies at the British Library, Oxford University, and Cambridge University). First performed in London at the Savoy Theatre on May 31, 1893, Jane Annie received 50 performances. "Barrie sought Conan Doyle's help after a nervous breakdown in February 1893. The comic opera had been commissioned by Richard D'Oyle Carte, and the deadline for its completion was rapidly approaching. As the whereabouts of the manuscript is not known, there is no way of telling with absolute certainty which parts are by which author. Conan Doyle refers to his collaboration on two occasions: in Memories and Adventures (p. 255) where he says he did the lyrics for the second act and much of the dialogue, and in a note written specially for Herbert Garland's A Bibliography of the Writings of Sir James Matthew Barrie..." Green and Gibson pp. 346-47.. Quarto. Original publisher's dark orange printed wrappers. [i] (title), [i] (printer's note), [i] (named cast list and note regarding the first performance), [i] (contents), 177, [iii] (advertisements of scores of The Yeoman of the Guard, Pirates of Penzance and various songs by Arthur Sullivan) pp. With Chappell price sticker "15/-" over original price on title and initials "EF" stamped in purple ink to lower right margin. Verso of upper wrapper with advertisements of musical publications of works by Albeniz (2), Lehmann (2), Beyer and Tennyson; recto of lower wrapper with advertisements for scores of The Gondoliers, verso for Haddon Hall. Wrappers chipped at edges; spine worn and lacking at head and tail; remnants of small circular label to upper. Small price label and notation to title in purple crayon; two gatherings split at hinge.

How I Shot My Bears;: or, Two Years Tent Life in Kullu and Lahoul.

London Sampson Low, Marston & Company 1893 - Mrs Tyacke was one of the great characters of nineteenth-century Kulu. She arrived with the sporting writer Richard Humphrey causing some local scandal as no one was sure of their marital status. Five-foot-one in height, her favourite pastime was hunting game, killing in her first season six black bears and eight red ones, as well as more than five hundred birds and eleven deer. This might have been considerably increased "had we cared to go in for slaughter". Between the accounts of her killing and skinning she does provide a fine description of Kulu in the late nineteenth century. Robinson, Wayward Women, p.76 A very good copy in slightly mottled original cloth. First edition pp.xi, 317, 13 illustrations, folding map. Armorial bookplate of Jenico [Preston], 14th Viscount Gormanston, Ireland's premier viscount, Colonial Governor, and sportsman.

LONE STAR HARRY. AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVE SCOUT.

Dick's Publishing House, n. d. (ca 1893)., New York - First edition. 12mo. Original pictorial pink wrappers, 16 pp. Born in 1855, in what is now the town of Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas, Lone Star Harry, at the age of fourteen, "was broke in as a cowboy" and worked for the C.C., 63, and other ranges. He worked as a scout for General Crook and various Wild West shows. One of the most important features of this pamphlet is the section entitled: "My Experience on the Texas Cattle Trail, A Picturesque Business Killed by Steam and Iron, Experiences during a Cattle Drive of 3,500 cattle from Texas up to Nebraska." This drive took place in 1882, with Captain Charles King, bound for Ogallala. Includes information on handling cowponies, and tips on how to quiet cattle after a stampede. The section on gun handling advises people to stand with their left side facing a gunman, who will then be unable to hit your heart. In 1890, Lone Star traveled to the East, and began his career as a trick pistol shot for Dr. Solomon's Wild West Show until 1893. Not in Adams Herd or National Union Catalogue. A very scarce and unrecorded cattle narrative and probably for Wild West Show distribution. Very fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

THE ANGEL OF THE REVOLUTION: A TALE OF THE COMING TERROR

London: Tower Publishing Company Limited, 1893.. Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-viii [1] 2-393 [394: ad], inserted frontispiece with illustration by E. S. Hope and sixteen inserted plates with illustrations by Fred T. Jane, original pictorial bevel-edged blue cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, slate coated endpapers. First edition. The author's first novel, preceded by two poetry books published pseudonymously as "Lara." From 1871 to 1914 future war fiction was enormously popular in Europe and America. Griffith was one of the writers who realized the destructive power that aerial warfare would bring to future conflict, as well as the overall impact of new technology on armed conflict. In Griffith's hugely popular and very influential novel the inventor of a new flying ship joins the Brotherhood of Freedom, an organization that controls the work of Nihilists, Anarchists, and Socialists throughout the world and is popularly known as the Terror. When war starts in Europe the daughter of the mysterious Master of the Terrorists, Natas (Satan backwards), plans to let the European powers destroy each other and then the Brotherhood will step in and take over Europe which will then be united (under Anglo-Saxon rule) into a single force to meet the "impending flood of yellow barbarians" assumed to be forming in the East. As the war progresses the Russians overrun all of Europe and invade England. After England's king (Edward VII) surrenders to the Brotherhood, the Russian attackers in England are slaughtered and the Brotherhood's air force quickly conquers the Russian homeland. There is no invasion from Asia and the West is at peace under socialist rule. "THE ANGEL OF THE REVOLUTION is remarkable not only for its extravagant visions of aerial bombing and mass destruction but also for its bastardized political ideology, which is a curious mixture of radical opinions ... Along with M. P. Shiel and H. G. Wells, he anticipated that the next war might be 'the most frightful carnival of destruction the world has ever seen,' involving the slaughter of millions of people, mostly noncombatants. This did not, however, deter him from looking forward to that conflict hopefully and enthusiastically. Like Shiel, he was an Anglo-Saxon chauvinist; like Wells a socialist; and he was hopeful that the apocalyptic clash of forces might result in the end of tyranny in Europe and the permanent victory of Christendom over the religious empires of the East. The attainment of such an end, in his view, would easily justify the death of millions ... By the time Griffith wrote his last novel, THE LORD OF LABOUR (published posthumously in 1911), his war of the imminent future was being fought with atomic missiles and disintegrator rays. He was still looking forward eagerly to the conflict. What effect the spectacle of the actual Great War might have had on his imaginative enthusiasm we can only guess." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 67-71. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-84; (1981) 1-83; (1987) 1-41; (1995) 1-41; and (2004) II-465. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 929. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 365. 255) where he says he did the lyrics for the second act and much of the dialogue, and in a note written specially for Herbert Garland's A Bibliography of the Writings of Sir James Matthew Barrie." Green and Gibson pp. 346-47. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

ALL ALONG THE RIVER: A NOVEL by the Author of "Ishmael," "Vixen," "Lady Audley's Secret," Etc., Etc. ..

London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Limited, 1893.. Octavo, three volumes: [i-iv] [1] 2-316; [i-iii] iv [1] 2-296; [i-iv] [1] 2-310 [311-312: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], half title leaves not called for, original dark green cloth, spine panels stamped in gold and blind, front and rear panels ruled in blind, yellow coated endpapers in volume III, plain endpapers in volumes I and II, all edges untrimmed. First edition. The title novel takes up the first two volumes of this book; the third contains eight short stories (omitted in later editions), three or four of them supernatural, depending on one's definitions: "His Oldest Friends," "The Island of Old Faces," "My Dream" and (possibly) "The Ghost's Name." Wilson excludes the last as a rationalized ghost story, while Richard Dalby includes it in his collection of Braddon's ghost stories for THE COLD EMBRACE (Ash-Tree Press, 2000), acknowledging it as borderline but noting its "well-tuned frisson of strange horror." All four stories first appeared in THE MISLETOE [sic] BOUGH, a Christmas annual that ran from 1878 to 1892, edited by Braddon for the first ten issues. "His Oldest Friends" was chosen by Braddon for a GRAND MAGAZINE issue in 1905 that solicited from authors what they considered their best story. A fifth story, "Stapylton's Plot," could almost be considered a story of prevision or predestination. A dilettante author comes up with a grandiose ambition for a novel based on a plot (man rescues woman from drowning herself, shelters her, becomes involved) that in fact, had even then been around the block more than a few times. He talks about his novel endlessly (insisting it must end tragically) but never writes a word. Years later, this very plot unfolds itself in reality. He catches a woman on Waterloo Bridge just before she jumps, persuades her to come back to his top-floor flat, puts her up in his bedroom while he retires to his living room couch, imagining fondly that he will bring about her reformation and redemption (and gain a wife in the bargain). He is awoken later by a noise a few hours later: she has jumped out the bedroom window and killed herself. This puts an end also to his talk about his novel. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 102. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963), or Reginald (1979; 1993). Hubin (1994), p. 93. NCBEL III 1040. Sadleir 267. Wolff 623. Mudie's Select Library subscription labels affixed to the front cover of each volume. Library stamps on the endpapers, slightly faded circular areas on spines from former labels, corner tips worn, light wear to spine ends and bottom edges, volumes I and II leaned, inner hinges cracked but holding tight, several signatures a bit proud, a good copy. A not so nice copy of a very elusive book. (#148089)
