On the Character - page below the title it correctly reads: "Played for the first time at the St.James's Theatre, on Thursday, February 14th, 1895". Remarkably rare and desirable collector's item of Wilde's masterpiece. Stuart Mason - Bibliography of Oscar Wilde - No. 384 (page 431). Later impression of the First Edition of the so-called "Acting Edition", containing an unrevised text ! This one sown, not wired. Barely any of these Textbooks survived. [The Dramatic Works of Oscar Wilde]. The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to present the writer with a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's homosexual double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. His notoriety caused the play, despite its early success, to be closed after 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work. After the success of Wilde's plays Lady Windermere's Fan and A Woman of No Importance, Wilde's producers urged him to write further plays. In July 1894 he mooted his idea for The Importance of Being Earnest to George Alexander, the actor-manager of the St James's Theatre. Wilde summered with his family at Worthing, where he wrote the play quickly in August. His fame now at its peak, he used the working title Lady Lancing to avoid pre-emptive speculation of its content. Many names and ideas in the play were borrowed from people or places the author had known Lady Queensberry, Lord Alfred Douglas's mother, for example, lived at Bracknell. There is widespread agreement among Wilde scholars that the most important influence on the play was W. S. Gilbert's 1877 farce Engaged Wilde borrowed from Gilbert not only several incidents but, in Russell Jackson's phrase "the gravity of tone demanded by Gilbert of his actors". Wilde continually revised the text over the next months: no line was left untouched, and "in a play so economical with its language and effects, [the revisions] had serious consequences". Sos Eltis describes Wilde's revisions as a refined art at work: the earliest, longest handwritten drafts of the play labour over farcical incidents, broad puns, nonsense dialogue and conventional comic turns. In revising as he did, "Wilde transformed standard nonsense into the more systemic and disconcerting illogicality which characterises Earnest's dialogue". Richard Ellmann argues that Wilde had reached his artistic maturity and wrote this work more surely and rapidly than before. Wilde hesitated about submitting the script to Alexander, worrying that it might be unsuitable for the St James's Theatre, whose typical repertoire was relatively serious, and explaining that it had been written in response to a request for a play "with no real serious interest". When Henry James's Guy Domville failed, Alexander turned to Wilde and agreed to put on his play. Alexander began his usual meticulous preparations, interrogating the author on each line and planning stage movements with a toy theatre. In the course of these rehearsals Alexander asked Wilde to shorten the play from four acts to three. Wilde agreed and combined elements of the second and third acts. The largest cut was the removal of the character of Mr. Gribsby, a solicitor who comes from London to arrest the profligate "Ernest" (i.e., Jack) for his unpaid dining bills. Algernon, who is posing as "Ernest", will be led away to Holloway Jail unless he settles his accounts immediately. Jack finally agrees to pay for Ernest, everyone thinking that it is Algernon's bill when in fact it is his own. The four-act version was first played on the radio in a BBC production and is still sometimes performed. Peter Raby argues that the three-act structure is more effective, and that the shorter original text is more theatrically resonant than the expanded published edition. The play was first produced at the St James's Theatre on Valentine's Day 1895. It was freezing cold but Wilde arrived dressed in "florid sobriety", wearing a green carnation. The audience, according to one report, "included many members of the great and good, former cabinet ministers and privy councillors, as well as actors, writers, academics, and enthusiasts". Allan Aynesworth, who played Algernon Moncrieff, recalled to Hesketh Pearson that "In my fifty-three years of acting, I never remember a greater triumph than [that] first night". Aynesworth was himself "debonair and stylish", and Alexander, who played Jack Worthing, "demure". The Marquess of Queensberry, the father of Wilde's lover Lord Alfred Douglas (who was on holiday in Algiers at the time), had planned to disrupt the play by throwing a bouquet of rotten vegetables at the playwright when he took his bow at the end of the show. Wilde and Alexander learned of the plan, and the latter cancelled Queensberry's ticket and arranged for policemen to bar his entrance. Nevertheless, he continued harassing Wilde, who eventually launched a private prosecution against the peer for criminal libel, triggering a series of trials ending in Wilde's imprisonment for gross indecency. Alexander tried, unsuccessfully, to save the production by removing Wilde's name from the billing, but the play had to close after only 86 performances. The play's original Broadway production opened at the Empire Theatre on 22 April 1895, but closed after sixteen performances. Its cast included William Faversham as Algy, Henry Miller as Jack, Viola Allen as Gwendolen, and Ida Vernon as Lady Bracknell. The Australian premiere was in Melbourne on 10 August 1895, presented by Dion Boucicault, Jr. and Robert Brough, and the play was an immediate success. Wilde's downfall in England did not affect the popularity of his plays in Australia. Wilde's two final comedies, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest, were still on stage in London at the time of his prosecution, and they were soon closed as the details of his case became public. After two years in prison with hard labour, Wilde went into exile in Paris, sick and depressed, his reputation destroyed in England. In 1898, when no-one else would, Leonard Smithers agreed with Wilde to publish the two final plays. Wilde proved to be a diligent reviser, sending detailed instructions on stage directions, character listings and the presentation of the book, and insisting that a playbill from the first performance be reproduced inside. Ellmann argues that the proofs show a man "very much in command of himself and of the play". Wilde's name did not appear on the cover, it was "By the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan". His return to work was brief though, as he refused to write anything else, "I can write, but have lost the joy of writing". (Wikipedia)

With the handwritten entry "A. Chester Beatty - 24 Kensington Palace Gardens - W. 8". The Studio was an illustrated fine arts and decorative arts magazine published in London from 1893 until 1964. The founder and first editor was Charles Holme. The full title was The Studio: an illustrated magazine of fine and applied art. The Studio exerted a major influence on the development of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements. In 1964 it was absorbed into Studio International magazine. Holme was in the wool and silk trades, had travelled extensively in Europe and had visited Japan and the United States with Lasenby Liberty and his wife Emma. During his travels he had formed:... the idea of an art magazine crystallised around his recurring observation that the chief barrier between countries was language, and his belief that the more the culture of one part of the world could be brought "visually" to the attention of another, the greater the chance of international understanding and peace. Holme retired from trade in order to start The Studio. Holme had hoped to engage Lewis Hind as the editor of the new venture, but Hind went instead to William Waldorf Astor's Pall Mall Budget. He suggested Joseph Gleeson White as an alternative. Gleeson White edited The Studio from the first issue in April 1893. In 1895 Holme took over as editor himself, although Gleeson White continued to contribute. Holme retired as editor in 1919 for reasons of health, and was succeeded by his son Charles Geoffrey Holme, who was already the editor of special numbers and year-books of the magazine. The magazine was monthly 853 issues were published between April 1893 and May 1964. The Studio promoted the work of "New Art" artists, designers and architectsit played a major part in introducing the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Charles Voysey to a wide audienceand it was especially influential in Europe. In keeping with Holme's original concept, the magazine was international in scope. A French edition was published in Paris, differing from the English one only in that the spine and parts of the cover were printed in French, and there was an insert consisting of a French translation of the article text and some French advertisements. The American edition was titled The International Studio. It had its own editorial staff, and the content was different from that of the English edition, although many articles from that were reprinted. It was published in New York by John Lane & Company from May 1897 until 1921, and by International Studio, Inc., from 1922 until publication ceased in 1931. In 1894 and then from 1896 on, special numbers of the magazine were also published, normally three times a year. These carried various titles 117 of them were issued between 1894 and 1940. From 1906 onwards The Studio published an annual, The Studio Year-Book of Decorative Art, which dealt with architecture, interior design and design of furniture, lighting, glassware, textiles, metalwork and ceramics. These annuals promoted Modernism in the 1920s, and later the Good Design movement. (Wikipedia)

Sylvie and Bruno Concluded. With Forty-Six Illustrations by Harry Furniss.

Macmillan 1893 - FIRST EDITION, first issue, tissue-guarded frontispiece, advertisement leaf (Williams 219) loosely inserted, pp.xxxi, 423, [6], 8vo, original red cloth with gilt triple fillet border and illustrations stamped in gilt to both boards, a.e.g., black endpapers with crease to bottom corner of flyleaf, dustjacket with publisher's repricing sticker to slightly darkened backstrip panel, a little splitting to folds and light chipping to corners, small trace of newspaper-clipping sometime adhered to front flap, bottom corners slightly bumped, very good. The presence of the dustwrapper is uncommon. Similarly Carroll's advertisement (Williams 219), issued with this edition, is generally discarded. It reflects his admirable, nearly obsessive, concern with the production qualities of his books: 'I am deeply annoyed to find that the last issue of "Through the Looking-Glass," . has been put on sale without its being noticed that most of the pictures have failed so much, in the printing, as to make the book not worth buying.' He asked that copies be returned to the publisher in return for copies of the next issue. Those returned he proposed giving to 'Mechanics' Institutes, Village Reading-Rooms, and similar institutions, where the means for purchasing such books are scanty'. Subsequent issues of Sylvie and Bruno Concluded had white endpapers. (Williams 216: Parrish Catalogue 51)

GLEAMS OF LIGHT AND GLIMPSES THRO' THE RIFT

      E. Allen, London 1893 - Crown 4to; xv & 724 pages; The stated number of illustrations is: " 52 plates, 6 of which are coloured paintings, each finished by hand"; The actual number is quite confusing: there are no plates called for that are actually numbered 33 and 36, and plates 46 and 47 are actaully numbered Diagram A1 and Diagram A2; there are also an additional 5 plates, four of which are described as Diagrams, and two of these are coloured, as well as the 6 mentioned on the title-page, making a total of 57 illustrations; hardback: original dark blue cloth, with title and decoration in gilt on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed; the covers are rather rubbed and stained, with wear to edges and corners, but sound; internally the front inner joint is split, but partially holding on the webbing, and the prelims are a little loose at the bottom; the untrimmed page edges are are little frayed, and are browned and have foxing, but the contents are otherwise clean and sound, and the main text block is strong. Overall a good copy of this extremely scarce work on Spiritualism and Psychic Photography. The work is actually by Sarah Power, a Birmingham amateur, also known as Thomas Slaney Wilmot, who describes the attempts of the deceased T.S.W. to contact her ( his fiancee) from the spirit world, and to advise her in the art of psychic photography. The first part consists of descriptions of 36 seances, and this is followed by a chapter on astrology, and then descriptions of experiments in psychic photography, with illustrations. Then follow sections on Planetary Angels, Fragments from Various Sources, Psychic Science Lectures, and other experiments. A most extraordinary and fascinating book, which pre-dates her book "Twenty Photographs of the Risen dead" by a year. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Pamirs; being A Narrative of a Year's Expedition on Horseback and on Foot through Kashmir, Western Tibet, Chinese Tartary, and Russian Central Asia

John Murray, London 1893 - This set lacks the folding map in Volume One, but is otherwise complete. However, a second copy of Volume One will also be included. This second copy of Volume One is also the 1893 stated "Second Edition". It is also an ex-library copy with faults (front free endpaper pasted down to front pastedown endpaper, inner margin of frontispiece glued to inner margin of title page, dampstains to spine and front board), but it does have the folding map at the rear. The folding map has no library markings, but does have a couple of 1/2" tears to the blank margins, and some minor foxing). This makes three volumes in total, with two copies of Volume One. Volume One: xx, 360 pages + frontispiece + plates. Ex-library, with rubber stamps of the "Scarborough Mechanics' Institute". No other library markings. Top corner of front board bumped. Rear inner hinge split. Volume Two: x, [2], 352 pages + frontispiece + plates + 2 folding maps at rear. Bookseller's label mostly removed from front board. Volume One (second copy of): Principal faults described above. Ex-library "Lawson Mechanics Institute". All three volumes stated "Second Edition", 1893. The text includes some notes on the Tibetan culture, the Tibetan Buddhist religion and the Gelugpa sect. The illustrations include Tibetan buddhist Chortens near, Leh, Ladakh, an area visited by the author. "May 31st - Bought six more ponies at an average of 43 rs. each. I had about twenty to choose from, but they were mostly too small"- Volume 1, page 107. "From there we were taken into the Chhos Khang, or sacred room, sometimes called the book-room, as the Buddhist holy books are all kept there. This room would answer to a chapel in any Christian monastery, for it is in here they assemble to read their Scriptures, and more often the writings of some Lama than the words of Buddha. In the centre of this room was a gaudily painted throne, on which sits the incarnation, and on his right is another highly decorated pedastal, on which sits a gilded image of Buddha"- Volume 1, page 133-134. "The whole configuration of the country has undergone a complete change since we crossed the Karakoram pass. Instead of being shut into nullahs and gorges and deep gullies, and walled in by the precipitous rocks of giant snow-clad mountains, we are now in an open country of vast plains and distant hills and the temperature has altered with the scenery"- Volume One, page 209. ; 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pierers Konversations-Lexikon, 7. Auflage, herausgegeben von Joseph Kürschner. Mit Universal-Sprachen-Lexikon nach Prof. Joseph Kürschners System, 12 Bände, Prachtausgabe in Halbleder

Berlin und Stuttgart, Verlag von W. Spemann (ab Bd. 5: Stuttgart, Union, Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft), 1888 - 1893. - 7. Auflage. Vollständiges Exemplar (A - Z) in 12 Bänden.
