In the Key of Blue and other Prose Essays.

      - London and New York, Elkin Mathews & John Lane and Macmillan & Company, 1893. Original full vellum designed by Charles Ricketts, decorated and lettered in gilt; pp. [vii], 302; head of spine with a minor scuffing, gold a little faded from spine, front inner hinge stengthened, a few of the entirely uncut margins a little browned. John Addington Symonds (1840â€"1893) was a celebrated poet, essayist and thinker. 'His specific contribution to the regeneration of society was as a pioneer in the field of gay rights; he was the first modern historian of (male) homosexuality, and the first advocate of gay liberation in Britain. When he read Plato's Phaedrus and Symposium in 1858, he realized that the ignoble behaviour of his fellow schoolboys at Harrow had an illustrious past, and when he read Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass in 1865 he became convinced that comradeship had the potential for a no less illustrious future' (Victor Norton, The Life and Writings of John Addington Symonds, online). - The trade issue appeared in cloth.         Point Donalson, Parker Florida, Bay County Residential Waterfront Development Family Archive 1893-1965

Parker, Florida: , 1893-1965. Parker, Florida. 1893-1965. Point Donalson, Florida, Bay County Residential Development family archive consisting of documents, letters, photographs, and other ephemera from 1893 to 1980. The archive is related to the selling and development of land in the Point Donalson subdivision in Florida. Ephemera has small tears and some spotting else near fine with near fine photographs measuring between 7" x 5" to 3" x 3" with modest foxing and edgewear.A substantial account of the Donalson family's heritage and involvement with the creation of Point Donalson in Parker, Florida. Several photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, and government documents illustrate the lives and struggles of creating Point Donalson during the 1950s. There is a small pack of 10 black and white snapshot photos taken in the 1950s at Point Donalson showing the early phases of development. Some of the photos are of Crescent Beach and various other parts of the property being constructed. The beach is a long curved plot of sand on a lake with trees and bushes all around it. Though there are a few picture of the area, there aren't any full scale pictures, only maps. There is a large sectional folding map of Bay County, Florida issued by Bay County Land & Abstract Company Panama City from April 15, 1921. The map shows various land marks such as post offices, small towns, ferry lines, highways, and more. Point Donalson can be seen on the map next to long point and in between Saint Andrews Bay and East bay. There are also two hand drawn maps of a couple lots in block 12. The small map shows how the lots would back up to St. Andrews bay. There are 18 subdivision plat maps from 1912 to the 1950s. Five plates feature a close up view of the houses while the rest of the plates illustrate the full view of Point Donalson. A small map version of Point Donalson is printed on the last page of the printed brochures. There are four stapled, professionally printed eight page brochures titled "Point Donalson The Beauty Spot on St. Andrew's Bay Parker, Florida" with the printed name of H.V. Roelof's Parker, Washington County, Florida on the next to last page. One section reads, "for years real estate men have been trying to buy this property. We intend to live here ourselves, and knowing the propensity of real estate men to sell to any and every one who has the price, we have not until now disposed of any of it. A few choice residence sites will be sold to desirable people who wish to make summer, winter, or all-the-year-round homes away from the cold winters and hot summers." The brochures include information about the type of people the Donalsons wish to sell their homes to and as said before feature a small map of the location. Many of the documents are business related and there are several letters regarding to the selling of lots from Thomas Sale to Mrs. Logan Bleckley (Anne D. Bleckley) and vice versa. One of which explains how the original copy of the Resolution for the property hadn't been found but a copy had, "Will wonders never cease? How does paper evaporate inside a court house? And isn't the Clerk who copied the missing Resolution in the minutes of the County Commissioners responsible for the fact that it was not duly recorded along with the (also necessary) proof of advertising?" The Resolution was found on November 22, 1958 only three weeks after it went missing. The Resolution for the property as well as proof of advertising in the newspaper is paper clipped to Mr. Sale's letter. The resolution states the family members who own the land and where, "Whereas, it has been made to appear that Logan Bleckley, Jr. Anne D. Bleckley, Henry W. Pearce, Lorna D. Pearce, William G. Donalson, James A. Donalson and Stella W. Donalson, as the owners of certain lands in Section 24, Township 4 South, Range 14 West known as Point Donalson." There is also a ledger book measuring 12" x 7.5", listing accounts of the property heirs including Anne Bleckley, from 1925 to 1956. Most of the land was divided as equally as possible, giving each child a section of Point Donalson. The houses were designed to look mostly the same and follow the same structures as all the others. A couple letters discuss the building limitations in Point Donalson. All lots had to be considered residential housing with a possible garage and separate housing for servants. The ground floor had to be within 1400 square feet with an overall housing value of $7,500.00 or more. Asbestos siding or concrete block was necessary and no temporary housing such as tents or trailers were permitted. The residents were allowed to build a dock on the Donalson Cove and housing owners were expected to have regulation septic tanks instead of dumping waste into the cove. There is also a family photo and extensive information on the family's genealogy collected by Sarah Eliza Donalson included. An extensive collection of information about the Donalson family and their involvement in Point Donalson Florida from 1893 to 1980. .

Widowers' Houses A Comedy by G Bernard Shaw First Acted by the Independent Theatre in London

London: Henry and Co, 1893 Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First Edition, 1893, Good Condition: See Notes, Hardcover, Olive Green Buckram, Gilt Title, 8vo, 126 pp NOTES ON CONDITION: Good Condition; spine bumped, crease at the bottom right hand corner of the cover: see photo. Corner of the flyleaf has been cut off approx: 4cm x 5cm The First Published Play of George Bernard Shaw. Shaw's very scarce first play, published in an edition according to Laurence, of "not more than 500" copies. It was not an overwhelming bestseller. Shaw wrote to John Lane that the publisher "never advertised it even once; and the sale, which was only effected by great perseverance & determination on the part of the purchasers, was 150 copies." When the publisher retired in December 1897, they ceded to Shaw 194 sets of unbound sheets, which Shaw claimed to have commissioned Sotheran & Co. to bind for him. It is unlikely Shaw had all of the copies bound; a considerable number must eventually have been pulped . Shaw began working on his first play destined for production, Widowers' Houses, in 1885 in collaboration with critic William Archer, who supplied the structure. Archer decided that Shaw could not write a play, so the project was abandoned. Years later, Shaw tried again and, in 1892, completed the play without collaboration. Widowers' Houses, a scathing attack on slum landlords, was first performed at London's Royalty Theatre on 9 December 1892. .

London:: Macmillan and Co.,. 1893.. Later printing of the UK edition (the first was in 1890) from a Macmillan Uniform Edition of his works sent by Kipling to Captain (later Rear-Admiral) Robley Dunglison Evans (1846-1912). PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED on title page above the title to Evans, "To the Captain of the 'Indiana' from the author / June 96:" and SIGNED "Rudyard Kipling" above his scored-through printed name. According to Evans' 1901 autobiography, A SAILOR'S LOG, (two copies of which are included), "While refitting in New York, Mr. Rudyard Kipling breakfasted on board with me . . . . Some weeks afterward he was good enough to send me a set of his books. On the title-page of PLAIN TALES FROM THE HILLS, facing a beautiful picture of Sergeant [sic] Mulvaney, done by my dear friend R. F. Zogbaum, he had written the following graceful lines. . . ." The graceful lines he refers to are those of an UNTITLED HOLOGRAPHIC POEM Kipling transcribed and signed on the page opposite the title page. The poem herein is generally unknown as it was never titled or collected by Kipling [Richards, note to E1-65]. (It appeared in Evans' own book, in one other with a few minor transcription mistakes, and also a few times in journals all around the turn of the last century.) The "beautiful picture" Evans refers to is of the character "Private Mulvaney," who makes his first appearance herein. Zogbaum's 4 x 6" gouache painting of Mulvaney is INSCRIBED BY ZOGBAUM, "To Capt R.D. Evans USN / R F Zogbaum / June '96" and pasted to the copyright page with, presumably in Zogbaum's hand, "'Tis the trut' I'm tellin' you" written beneath. KIPLING'S POEM, in four quatrains, begins with "Zogbaum draws with a pencil,/ And I do things with a pen;/ And you sit up in a conning tower/ Bossing eight hundred men." And ends with "'To him that hath shall be given,'/ And that's why these books are sent/ To the man who has lived more stories/ Than Zogbaum or I couLd invent!" Small octavo, blue-cloth boards stamped in gilt and black on front and in gilt on spine. Evans' bookplate on pastedown. Expertly recased with original spine laid down, fine thus. Housed in lambs-wool lined, black cloth-covered clamshell case lettered in gilt on spine. .

Group 60 photographs depicting the people and landscape of Ceylon, and including a number of images documenting the visit by Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Ceylon 1893 - Mounted albumen photographs, many captioned in manuscript on the mounts, many signed in the negative by Skeen. Image sizes approximately 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; card mounts measuring 14 7/8 x 12 inches. Housed in a contemporary full morocco box, by A. Guenther of Vienna, gilt patterned endpapers and edges, metal hinges and clasps. Lovely collection of 19th century images of Ceylon's people and landscape, including images of a royal visit by Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. In 1892, Archduke Ferdinand, the Prince and heir apparent of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, departed on a 10-month journey around the world, including visits to India, Ceylon, Australia, New Guinea, Japan, and the United States. The voyage held a dual purpose: the Archduke was recovering from tuberculosis and needed a cover in which to convalesce; in addition, however, the 28-year-old Prince was an avid sportsman and travelled in search of exotic game. The Archduke and his large entourage arrived in Colombo on January 5, 1893; travelling overland to a hunting campe at Kalawewa, returning to India on January 13. The Archduke is best remembered for being assasinated in 1914 which would trigger World War I. Many of these images are by the important photographer William Skeen. Skeen, trained at the London School of Photography, arrived in Ceylon in 1862. His father, a noted printer on the island, had purchased an existing photography studio for him to operate. "During its existence W.L.H. Skeen and Co. was the premier firm in Ceylon, producing an extensive documentation of agriculture and industry (particularly tea and spices), landscapes and ethnic groups . The company were photographers by appointment to the Duke of Edinburgh during the tour of 1870 and photographed elephant kraals . It also exhibited at major international exhibitions from the 1870s to the 1900s" (RCS Photographers Project, Cambridge University Library). Other images are attributed to the two photographers who traveled with the Archduke, the Bohemian Eduard Hodek (1858-1929) (who in addition to being the royal photographer for the trip, was also the Archduke's head taxidermist) and German photographer Karl Pietzner (1853-1927).         Familie der Cacteen.

      - Switzerland, unpublished, 1893-1905. Folio. (ca. 38 x 28 cm). 24 pp. of hand-written text, including an "Eintheilung nach Förster", and loose sheets (some on grey paper) with original hand-coloured illustrations of various Cacteae, similar succulents, and a few other plants, many after specimens in the Botanischer Garten Basel. Text in contemporary paper wrappers.= A unique portfolio of original water colour illustrations of, mostly, cacti, including specimens from the Botanical Garden in Basel, mostly dated between 1893-1896, one dated 1898, and one 1905. Thirty-seven leaves in total, some with more than one image. The quality of the paintings and the colouring varies, but the majority is very good to excellent: rich in detail and subtile in colouring and shading. Five plates show other plants (Passiflora, peony, common grape hyacinth, etc.), one is partly in sketch. A few are copied from Curtis' Botanical Magazine. The Förster referred to on the front leaf is C. Förster's "Handbuch der Cacteenkunde in ihrem ganzen Umfange, nach dem gegenwärtigen Stande der Wissenschaft bearbeitet". Front leaf of the portfolio with a few creases, also affecting the opposite text. Some marginal age-toning and slight soiling, otherwise a very good and attractive item. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Le Morte D'Arthur (Illustrated By Aubrey Beardsley : Bound By The Chelsea Bindery)

UK: Dent (London), 1893-4 First edition: Two volumes. One of 1500 sets of the 'ordinary issue' published by J.M. Dent in 1893 (there are also 300 sets printed on Van Gelder paper). The BOOKS are in Very Good++ or better condition. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Some toning to the pages edges and minor edge wear to the page edges in a few places with in Vol. 2, a repair to a small closed tear on the verso of the lower edge of the colophon page and a small area of loss to the lower edge of the title page. Two frontispieces with some offsetting of these to the facing pages and 18 full page wood engravings (including five double-page), numerous text illustrations, and approximately 350 designs for chapter headings and borders, all by Aubrey Beardsley. Both volumes have been lavishly rebound by The Chelsea Bindery in full black morocco with five raised bands. Re-gilding of the top edges with gilt titling and decoration to the spines, covers and interior borders. Beautiful marbled endpapers with two further blank endpapers to the front and rear in both volumes. The binding remains tight in both volumes. The slightest of rubbing to the gilt decoration in places. Housed in a custom buckram slipcase with black morocco edging and a silk tie. An exquisite set of Beardsley's masterpiece. Always an avid reader Beardsley frequented London's antiquarian book shops, where he forged a friendship with book shop owner, Frederick Evans. Evans admired Aubrey's work and introduced him to a fellow customer, publisher J.M. Dent. Dent was planning a beautifully illustrated version of Malory's Morte D'Arthur, along the lines of some of Morris's Kelmscott Press books, but using a less expensive printing process. Loath to pay the elevated fee William Morris would charge for this commission, Dent was persuaded to employ Aubrey Beardsley. To help secure this commission Beardsley drew 'The Achieving of the Sangreal'. The images drawn for this volume remain the artist's most striking work and have not been equalled by any of his many disciples. Beardsley's life was tragically short with him dying of tuberculosis at the age of 26. In those few years he managed however to leave a great and lasting artistic legacy. A beautiful set. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

A nineteenth century Louis Vuitton trade card

[Circa 1893]. Thin card, 83 x 121 mm, lithograph printed recto only in black on pale aqua; a very light stain at left hand edge, otherwise in fine condition. A rare early example of the trade card of the firm of Louis Vuitton, one of the most famous brands in history. The card gives the addresses of Louis Vuitton's iconic Paris store at 1, rue Scribe, in the highly fashionable district in the vicinity of the Place de l'Opéra, which had opened in 1871; and also of the London store at 454, Strand, which opened in 1885. Although the card was printed in Paris, it is in English (it advertises "Trunks and Bags") and has an extremely early London telephone number (simply Charing +). It is therefore likely that it was produced exclusively for the London store. The emblem at the centre shows the French flag, the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes. This helps to date the card to around 1893, the year that George Vuitton visited the United States for the first time and Vuitton luggage was displayed at the World's Fair in Chicago. The address of the Vuitton workshops inAsnières-sur-Seine, now the home of the Louis Vuitton private museum, is printed across the bottom of the card.
