The Collection of Autograph Letters and Historical Documents Formed by Alfred Morrison. (Second Series, 1882-1893). The Hamilton & Nelson Papers. 1756-1815

Printed for Private Circulation. 1893-4. Printed for Private Circulation. 1893-4. First Edition, 2 vols., 4to, viii,231,[1]; viii,430pp., orig. cloth-backed boards, printed paper label on spines, unopened, uncut. The papers printed in these two volumes extend from 1756 to the death of Lady Hamilton in 1815. The earliest papers form the correspondence of Sir William Hamilton, and are almost exclusively of the period after his appointment as Ambassador to the Court of Naples; they include letters to and from some of the best known men of the time, and are full of details of the most interesting social and political events of the day. The second volume covers the years 1798 to 1815. The real interest of the series begins with the victory of the Nile and closes with Trafalgar; and the central object of that interest is the figure of Nelson. A fine set of this highly important reference work, privately printed in a small number.

The Cushite: or, The Descendants of Ham as found in the Sacred Scriptures and in the Writings of Ancient Historians and poets from Noah to the Christian Age. [Introduction by T. McCants Stewart, Esq., President of the Brooklyn Literary Union.]

Springfiled, Mass: Willey & Co, 1893. Springfiled, Mass: Willey & Co, 1893. First edition. 8vo. x, [11]-175 pp. Original green cloth. Fine . Rufus Lewis Perry (1834-1895) was a Baptist minister and editor, born into slavery. He edited various Baptist publications, including American Baptist and The National Monitor, was secretary of the Consolidated American Baptist Missionary Convention, and founded the Messiah Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where he lived most of his life. In Perry's only book, THE CUSHITE, "..he drew upon his interest in African history, classics, and black Masonry to produce a defense of black cultural nationalism, arguing that the ancient Ethiopians and Egyptians were the black descendants of Ham and destined for 'a return of racial celebrity, when in the light of a Christian civilization, Ethiopia shall stretch out her hands unto God' (p. x). This book along with his other writings and his leadership among Baptists earned for Perry a place as one of the most articulate religious spokespersons for African-American causes in the second half of the nineteenth century" (ANB) Perry, along with George Washington Williams and others now referred to as "early Black historians" (many of whom were from outside academia), were part of a late 19-century movement that challenged Eurocentric histories that neglected or misrepresented Black history. These authors laid the foundation for Du Bois' incomplete Encyclopaedia Africana and mid-20th-century Afrocentricism

London & New York: Elkin Mathews & John Lane / Macmillan & Co., 1893.. London & New York: Elkin Mathews & John Lane / Macmillan & Co., 1893.. Pale blue cloth, elaborately stamped in gilt after a design by Ricketts, t.e.g. Minor rubbing at extremities, endsheets a bit foxed and tanned, as usual, small bookseller's ticket on pastedown, edges faintly tanned, trace of cracking to rear inner hinge, but a very good, bright copy. First edition, ordinary paper issue, in the proper first state of the binding. "A few copies were bound in light blue cloth, and the late Mr. Mathews informed me that the whole of the ordinary issue was to have been so bound, but that Mr. Ricketts came in and objected, making a jest about 'Ricketts' Blue,' [a common commercial dye of the time] and therefore the cream cloth was substituted" - Babington. This copy bears an interesting gift inscription on the front free endsheet: [Recipient erased] "in memory of pleasant days at Deal July-August 1894. CEM / R.M. Dawkins. Jan. 1912." That the inscription potentially is by the eminent archaeologist and classical scholar (1871 - 1955), and friend of Baron Corvo and Norman Douglas, does not seem beyond possibility. Certainly it is a topically probable association. "Beyond doubt this state is highly uncommon, and there appears every reason to believe these are the earliest copies..." - Colbeck. BABINGTON 56. This new edition of William Caxton's Godeffroy of Boloyne, done after the first edition of 1481, was corrected for the press by H. Halliday Sparling and printed by me, William Morris, at the Kelmscott Press, Upper Mall, Hammersmith, in the County of Middlesex & finished on the 27th day of April, 1893. LIMITED EDITION of 306 copies, 300 printed on paper (6 copies on vellum) and sold by the Kelmscott Press. The limitation is not printed in the book. 4to, approximately 290 x 210 mm, 11½ x 8¼ inches, printed in red and black in Troy and Chaucer Type, pages: xxii, floral decorated title page, 1-450 plus 2 pages, strange words and colophon, bound in publisher's full limp vellum with yapp edges, gilt lettering to spine, printed label at top of first pastedown stating "Given by Mrs Willam Morris in memory of her Husband 1897". Vellum slighty darkened in patches, spine slightly browned and gilt lettering slightly rubbed with slight loss of gilt, silk ties missing, label removed from first free endpaper leaving a pale brown patch and some crinkling, pale numbers on verso half-title, another having been rubbed out has left very slight thinning to paper, small round pale mark at bottom of spine where a label has been removed, 4 pages at the beginning have pale age-browning, looks like a paper fault, 1 small brown spot to fore-edge, otherwise a very good copy. This work is interesting as a record of the Crusades and the formation of the short-lived kingdoms in the East. It shows medieval chivalry as it actually was – not as represented by poets and storytellers. The highly decorative edition features many new ornaments and initials, as well as a new printer’s mark designed especially for this book. It was the first book published and sold at Kelmscott Press. This annoyed the noted London bookseller Bernard Quaritch, who felt that in his desire for all of the profits, Morris “will be a loser by it, but… be a nuisance to me on account of the Chaucer” which he was contracted to publish. He was correct; Godefrey did not succeed and Jane Morris eventually donated the remaining copies to public libraries, of which our copy is one. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.         Oak and Ivy

Dayton, Ohio: Press of United Brethren Publishing House, 1893. Dayton, Ohio: Press of United Brethren Publishing House, 1893. First edition. A Very Good + example of Dunbar's first book. Light soiling to the cloth, faint dampstain ring to rear board, spine ends rubbed and inner hinges expertly repaired, otherwise a sharp, clean copy. Only about 500 copies of this first edition were published (Merle Johnson';s American First Editions). & & The first book of poems from one of America';s great African American poets - and the first African American poet to achieve widespread fame. The title of Maya Angelou';s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is taken from a line from one of its poems, "Sympathy." Famous for his verse in both standard and "black" English, the author helped print the book himself at the suggestion of the Wright Brothers. Dunbar sold copies of it to people he met while working as an elevator operator. Eventually, Dunbar was recognized by William Dean Howells, the dean of American letters, who praised his work in Harper';s Weekly: "one sees how the poet exults in his material, as the artist always does.".
