        NOW FOR A STORY!

1893. A Collection of Short Original Stories for Children. London: Skeffington and Son, 1893. Original light blue paper-covered boards decorated in white, pink, green and black. First Edition of this anthology of 18 "short original stories for children" by 13 different authors of the day -- including G. A. Henty ("The Wreckers of Pendarven"); others include L. T. Meade, Mrs. Molesworth and Mabel Wotton. It is a very delicate book, because it was bound in paper-covered boards rather than in cloth.~This copy is in very good condition, the main flaw being that the volume has been re-backed in similarly-light-blue cloth, with most of the original spine laid back down; the original light brown patterned endpapers are covered with later blue-patterned ones.         Notes taken at Boston, Old South Church

Boston, 1893. Watercolor drawing on paper. Signed and dated. Sheet measures 9 3/4" x 7 5/8". This original watercolor drawing by Daniel C. Beard depicts various elements of the uniform of a Revolutionary War soldier. The artist made the drawing during a visit to the historic site of the Old South Church in Boston in 1893. Around this time, Beard worked as an illustrator for books by Mark Twain, Ernest Crosby, and others. The drawing includes a blue cloth coat, "an old cocked hat," and a leather cap. Of the latter, Beard notes on the drawing, "I think this cap is of later date than the Revolution. I have seen them in old prints but 1800 & 1810." This original drawing is in very condition with vivid colors and visible pencil sketches. Daniel Carter Beard (1850-1941) was an American illustrator, author, youth leader, and social reformer. In 1905, he founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, a youth organization that taught American frontier traditions and skills to young boys. In 1910, he merged his organization with the Boy Scouts of America and became actively involved in the Scouts and other youth organizations.

A great American government autograph collection of 35 signatures featuring Rutherford B. Hayes ? signed ten days before his death - and Benjamin Harrison, as president, as well as Vice President Levi Morton, future Secretary of State, author of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act John Sherman, and two Speakers of the House<br>

various, [1893] All autographs are housed in a book with gilt-edged paper, unpaginated, some pages blank, 32mo. Approximately 1893. Fine condition. Both Hayes? and Harrison?s signatures have a blank verso, with discoloring on half of Hayes? signature due to the newspaper article that is opposite it. The article is a clipping of an Iowan newspaper, detailing the exchange of the autograph between Hayes and the owner of the book, Evelyn Sherman. Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) served as the 22nd United States Vice President under Benjamin Harrison. Prior to obtaining that office, he was a Republican Representative from New York for the 46th and 47th Congresses. In 1880, the Republican nominee, James Garfield, asked Morton to be his running mate, but Morton declined, requesting Ambassador to France instead. In a weird twist of fate, it would have actually been Morton ?" instead of Chester A. Arthur ?" to take the Oath of Office after Garfield?s assassination. Ironically, Garfield?s assassin, Charles Guiteau, de

Aux Indes et en Australie dans le yacht le "Sunbeam"

Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1893. Quarto, with many illustrations, some taken from photographs, gilt edges, neat repairs to gutter at front endpapers; a few spots but a fine copy in the original ornately pictorial cloth, with pretty decoration in silver and gilt. A fine copy of the splendid first French edition, which puts the English edition of 1890 quite in the shade. It is scarce - and is not in fact recorded by Ferguson - although almost half the book is devoted to the Australian portion of the voyage. Lord and Lady Brassey made several cruises around the world in their yacht Sunbeam. Lady Brassey&#39;s account of their earlier voyage published in 1879 was very popular and went through numerous editions. Her last voyage was undertaken in 1886-7: she died before the cruise was completed and her grieving husband completed her work for publication. He later authorised this French version, which was translated by Gaston Bonnefont. The many fine plates and illustrations are after designs by R.T. Pritchett, and engraved by Whymper, Cooper and Pearson. There are almost too many to comment on - more than 200 in total - but the work is particularly rich with nautical scenes, as well as charming vignettes ranging from street scenes to details of Australian and Pacific natural history.

Columbus Outdone! Capt. Andrews&#39; Cruise in the Sapolio

New York: Enoch Morgan&#39;s Sons Company, 1893. Octavo, folding map and folding plate, illustrated throughout; spine ends a little rubbed, front endpaper slightly chipped, very good in original illustrated brown cloth, flyleaf inscribed and signed by the author. Williams&#39; solo crossing in his smallest boat. Signed presentation copy in original illustrated cloth, detailing the audacious solo transatlantic crossing of William Andrews in 1892. Andrews has previously completed a crossing in a vessel of some twenty feet (see previous item), but evidently found it too commodious - perhaps because there was enough room for his brother. This time, he set out in a considerably smaller vessel of 14 feet 6 inches christened the Sapolio. Entirely hand-made by Andrews, this delicate boat of canvas stretched upon a cedar frame began her courageous voyage from Atlantic City in New Jersey on July 21, 1892, arriving at the point of Columbus&#39; departure in Spain some 63 days later. This book includes the journal kept by Andrews, with descriptions and illustrations of the Azores where the Sapolio anchored during the voyage. This copy, with a signed inscription by Andrews, was issued as a souvenir for the Chicago World&#39;s Fair - a spectacular exhibition of innovation and commerce staged to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus&#39;s discovery of the Americas in 1492.

Strange, But True. Life and Adventures of Captain Thomas Crapo and Wife

New Bedford: Capt. Thomas Crapo, c., 1893. Small octavo, with illustrations; a very good copy in the original brown cloth. Man & wife, across the Atlantic! The short-handed sailor Thomas Crapo enjoyed sudden fame for his gruelling transatlantic crossing in a 19 foot dory, accompanied by his new wife. The seven-week voyage resulted in a publicity and show tour for the couple that lasted several years. Crapo self-published this ghosted autobiography in 1893, and turned eventually to the coastal cargo trade until May 1899 when in an attempt to repeat his former triumphs he left New Bedford in a 9 foot dinghy, bound for Cuba. His body was recovered off Charleston some time later. Mrs C. was left penniless and re-issued her late husband&#39;s &#39;autobiography&#39; to raise funds. The reissue is not identified on the title-page but may be identified by the fact that it ends on p. 151 with Mrs. Crapo&#39;s description of his demise. This re-issue is much scarcer than the first edition; this copy was signed on the title-page by Joanna Crapo in 1904.

John Demarr, a Yorkshire farmer, arrived in Sydney in 1839 and travelled extensively through Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland working variously as a drover, storeman and stockman. The work is replete with vignettes of rural life in Australia and descriptions of the prevailing economic and social conditions. Demarr, a sympathetic observer, shows an uncharacteristic concern for the convicts and native population: &#39;I have gone up to a black&#39;s fire, where three or four were seated, filling my pipe with tobacco; at once, one or two would rise, and offer me a fire stick, with which to light the pipe. How many boors are there in England, either in town or country, who would do such a thing, or even think of doing it?&#39; Generously illustrated and lucidly written, this is a charming narrative as well as a valuable item of Australian social history. It is worth noting that the List of Illustrations calls for 15 plates (14 plates including the frontispiece and one textual illustration); there is also a folding map.

The South Sea Islanders and the Queensland Labour Trade

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co, 1893. Tall octavo, frontispiece and four maps, numerous plates and illustrations, bookplate, early owner&#39;s name on endpaper; a fine copy in original blue cloth, gilt, very light bumping at extremities of spine. First edition of the author&#39;s only book. A lengthy, sometimes self-aggrandizing, attempt to justify the displacement of the "Kanakas" to work in the plantations of Northern Queensland, on the grounds that they were a "class of labourers better able to endure the climate than Europeans, as well as to work at a cheaper rate". Wawn had been involved in the trade since its inception in 1875, after five years trading, salvaging and beach-combing among the islands of the western Pacific. Here, Wawn is complacent about the implications of the trade, as can be seen in his incendiary dedication to the pioneers and sugar-planters of Queensland, "Basely Betrayed, and Unscrupulously Sacrificed to the Greed of the Political Place-hunter and the Howling Ignorance which follows in his train&hellip;". Peter Corris has written of Wawn and his book: "Something of a misanthropist, Wawn was intensely critical of his fellow Europeans, and never concealed his disapproval of the manners of the Pacific islands people but he did not deny their intelligence and resourcefulness. His book, The South Sea Islanders and the Queensland Labour Trade, is a valuable, sensitive and subtle account of the nature of the trade" (ADB). Wawn&#39;s original manuscript was lost on the wreck of the Quetta in 1890, forcing him to re-write and update the work as here. A mollifying preface by the editors is evidence of mounting political pressure in England regarding the trade; they comment that they have chosen to concentrate on the narrative and practical aspects of the work, deputing W. Delisle Hay with the task of editing the book for publication.

Captain Cook&#39;s Journal during his First Voyage round the World made in H.M. Bark "Endeavour" 1768-71. A Literal Transcription of the Original MSS... Edited by Captain W.J.L. Wharton

London: Elliot Stock, 1893. Large octavo, with portrait frontispiece, four maps and plates bound in as well as three large folding charts in rear endpaper sleeve; a little toning of the edges, a few leaves thumbed, yet a very good copy overall in the original polished wooden boards (slightly splayed as is often seen), morocco spine lettered in gilt. First publication of the corner journal. A wonderful Cook relic: one of just fifty copies of this special version of the first publication of Cook&#39;s "Corner Journal", a very limited edition of a book published in several other forms. This special version is bound with wooden sides made from timber taken from "Cook&#39;s Tree" - an elm tree on Clapham Common which, according to local legend, was planted by Cook himself: the tree blew down in 1893. As Holmes notes, the tradition was &#39;no doubt apocryphal&#39;, but one should of course allow relics a life and value of their own. There are after all many more bones of St Catherine of Siena preserved in the cathedrals of Europe than a single skeleton might require. And as for Cook&#39;s Cottage in Melbourne&hellip; This edition of the "Corner Journal", whether in this exotic timbered form or in the more regular versions, was a significant publication anyway, as the first full publication of Cook&#39;s journal of the Endeavour voyage, transcribed from the so-called "Corner Journal" in the Mitchell Library (State Library of New South Wales) with additions from the Admiralty journal. &#39;For the first time one of Cook&#39;s journals is presented to the public unmutilated by any editor&hellip;&#39; (Holmes).

Kindersang. Neue Bilder zu alten Liedern. Hermannstadt, W. Krafft 1920. 4°. 8 Blätter. Mit 12, meist nahezu blattgr. Farblithographien.

- Vier Bilduntertexte in siebenbürgisch-sächsischer Mundart. - Sehr guter Erhaltungszustand. Der Einband ist nur gering berieben. Vorderer Innendeckel teilw. mit Abrieb, etwa 2 : 2 cm. Das Buch ist unten am Bug etwas eingedellt.

Cosmopolis. Roman. Illustre d&#39;Aquarelles par Duez, Jeanniot et Myrbach Edition du Figaro.

Paris: Alphonse Lemerre, Editeur, 1893. Octavo (22 x 16 cm). Red half-leather binding with imperial monogram of Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov (pseudonym K.R.); gilt-ruled spine; original pictorial wrappers preserved; [i], ii-iv, [1], [2-471 pp. Color frontis and many illustrations by Duez, Jeanniot and Myrbach in the text and on seven plates (three colored). Signed "Konstantin" on the front wrapper and "Petersbourg 1893" on the title page; with brief notes throughout indicating which chapters were read when and where and occasional underlining. Spine extremities and corners rubbed; a few creases to endpapers; stamp of the Academy of the History of Material Culture; else an attractive copy. First edition of this novel by the French poet, novelist and critic Paul Bourget (1852-1935). Set in Rome, this work of psychological realism depicts the life of decadent European society in the late nineteenth century, raising the question of personal moral responsibility, and corresponds to Bourget&#39;s renewed embrace of the Catholic faith in the 1890s. This copy is from the library of the Russian Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov (1858-1915), grandson of Emperor Nicholas I. As a young boy, the Grand Duke was more interested in arts and letters than in the customary military upbringing required of male members of the Imperial Family. Although he went on to serve with distinction in the Imperial Russian Navy and later in the Izmailovsky Regiment of the Imperial Guard, he preferred to spend his time as a patron of the arts and entertainment, as well as a practicing artist, poet, and playwright of some regard (using the pseudonym K.R., short for Konstantin Romanov). He founded numerous literary societies and published translations of German and English literary works. Many of his poems later became the basis of famous art songs. Following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, three of the Grand Duke&#39;s sons were murdered in Alapaevsk while other members of the family were able to emigrate, and parts of the library were evidently dispersed or absorbed by public institutions. The frequent inscription of "Palais de Marbre" suggests that this book was read at the Palace, which Konstantin Romanov co-owned after 1888. He has underlined numerous passages, including one concerned with the task of the artist: "Obscsur ou celebre, riche ou pauvre, un artiste doit etre d&#39;abord un artisan et en pratiquer les vertus fecondes: l&#39;application patiente, la technicite consciencieuse, l&#39;absorption modeste dans la besogne [...]" (114). A rare document providing a glimpse into the habits and tastes of the Grand Duke.

THE HISTORY OF GODEFREY OF BOLOYNE AND OF THE CONQUEST OF JERUSALEM.

Hammersmith, Kelmscott Press,1893.This new edition of William Caxton's Godeffroy of Boloyne, done after the first edition of 1481, was corrected for the press by H. Halliday Sparling and printed by me, William Morris, at the Kelmscott Press, Upper Mall, Hammersmith, in the County of Middlesex & finished on the 27th day of April, 1893. LIMITED EDITION of 306 copies, 300 printed on paper (6 copies on vellum) and sold by the Kelmscott Press. The limitation is not printed in the book. 4to, approximately 290 x 210 mm, 11½ x 8¼ inches, printed in red and black in Troy and Chaucer Type, pages: xxii, floral decorated title page, 1 - 450 plus 2 pages, strange words and colophon, bound in publisher's full limp vellum with yapp edges, gilt lettering to spine, printed label at top of first pastedown stating "Given by Mrs Willam Morris in memory of her Husband 1897". Vellum slighty darkened in patches, spine slightly browned and gilt lettering slightly rubbed with slight loss of gilt, silk ties missing, label removed from first free endpaper leaving a pale brown patch and some crinkling, pale numbers on verso half - title, another having been rubbed out has left very slight thinning to paper, small round pale mark at bottom of spine where a label has been removed, 4 pages at the beginning have pale age - browning, looks like a paper fault, 1 small brown spot to fore - edge, otherwise a very good copy. This work is interesting as a record of the Crusades and the formation of the short - lived kingdoms in the East. It shows medieval chivalry as it actually was ? not as represented by poets and storytellers. The highly decorative edition features many new ornaments and initials, as well as a new printer?s mark designed especially for this book. It was the first book published and sold at Kelmscott Press. This annoyed the noted London bookseller Bernard Quaritch, who felt that in his desire for all of the profits, Morris ?will be a loser by it, but? be a nuisance to me on account of the Chaucer? which he was contracted to publish. He was correct; Godefrey did not succeed and Jane Morris eventually donated the remaining copies to public libraries, of which our copy is one. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.
