The Mummy. Chapters on Egyptian Funereal Archaeology

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1893., 1893. Inscribed First Edition. Octavo, pp.xvi, 404. Bound in the publisher's red cloth, with gilt stamp of Mestha (otherwise known as Imseti) to front board, double-ruled blind panneling to boards, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine; deckled edges, newspaper insert pasted in to front flyleaf, bookplate to front pastedown. With eighty-eight illustrations, in a variety of styles (including photogravure), several of them fold-out, and a list of heiroglyphics. Binding is rubbed; worn and frayed at spine ends, bumped at corners, sunning to spine, and with tidemark to bottom left sixth of upper board, some small tears to proud deckle edges. Internally clean, with author's ink inscription to "Rev Henry Blunt, from the writer" in 1893 to first blank, tidemark to front lower right hand of front paste down, corresponding to tidemark on upper board, short ink notation to rear pastedown concerning Amen Ra in the same hand that labels and dates the review of The Mummy pasted in to the front fly, from the Pall Mall Gazette. Pictorial bookplate, "From the Middle East and Egyptological Library" of Robert William Morrell, MBE (co-founder of the Thomas Paine Society). Budge was one of the most significant early British Egyptologists, who wrote a number of standard works on the history of Egypt and Assyria at the turn of the twentieth century, though these have since been superseded by the work of modern Egyptologists, whose research with the assistance of modern technologies and with the advent of further discoveries in Egypt, have rendered a number of his conclusions unsupportable. The Mummy is a work of admirable scholarship, synthesising scholarship in German, French, and English, to giver perspective on the religious rites and means of preservation used in the process of mummification. The figure on the front board, Mestha or Imseti, was one of the four sons of Horus, venerated as a funerary god, and who appears as a human head on the lid of the canopic jar used to store the liver.

        French Poets and Novelists

1893. Signed. JAMES, Henry.French Poets and Novelists.London: Macmillan, 1893.Second English edition, Globe printing, of this early collection of 12 essays on French literature by James, an exceptional copy inscribed by him with phrasing from his Theory of Fiction, ?"For these or those who have been initiated into art by production [flourish] the subject is as much a part of their work as their hunger is a part of their dinner. Henry James [flourish] May 18th, 1904.?"?"Henry James is the most voluminous, and probably the best, American critic of French literature?" (Fay, French Review, 24:4,325). James was only a baby when he ?"made his first contact with France in 1844… He was in Europe again from 1855 to 1858, much of the time in Paris, and again in 1859-60. After a ten-year interval in America,?" James continued, throughout his life, to frequently visit France and especially Paris. ?"The fruit of these visits was a lifelong interest in French literature, an interest which left its mark on his own work.?" This volume?'s 12 essays, which appeared in American periodicals such as The Galaxy and The North American Review from 1873-77, includes those on Baudelaire, Sand, Flaubert, de Musset, two on Balzac, and an essay on French theatre. These were collected and first ?"published in book form in 1878 as French Poets and Novelists?" (Pacey, American Literature 13:3, 240). ?"James possessed a point of view tailor-made for the vocation of literary criticism.?" He once memorably described the critic?'s life as ?"heroic, for it is immensely vicarious. He has to understand for others?" (New York Times).Supino 5.4.0.         Le Capital. Extraits faits par M. Paul Lafargue

Paris: Guillaumiin & Cie., , 1893. Small octavo (144 x 90 mm). Original light brown ribbed cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. Frontispiece portrait of Marx. Lower corner of front cover bumped. Paper stock lightly browned throughout as usual, portrait lightly foxed; a very good copy. First edition of this selection from Marx's Capital, published in the series Petite bibliothèque économique française et étrangère, the product of a surprising collaboration. Lafargue, a founder of the French socialist party and later Marx's son-in-law, of all the French Marxist writers closest to German orthodoxy, made the selection of the extracts. Pareto, whose economic and sociological views by no means coincided with those of Marx, provided the lengthy introduction.

I Manoscritti di Leonardo Da Vinci. Codice sul Volo degli Uccelli e Vaeie Altre Materie. Pubblicato da Teodoro Sabachnikoff

Paris: Edoardo Rouveyre, 1893. 1893. A VERY GOOD copy of this early (and now scarce) published appearance of da Vinci's Codex "On the flight of birds." Vellum hardcover. Artfully bound into the book is a carefully reproduced facsimile of the Codex, containing first and last pages (these appear on the inside of the front and rear "copertina" or cover, plus thirteen of the eighteen folios, recto and verso. (Missing are Folios 1, 2, 10, 17 & 18 which evidently came to light as this edition was being published. Folio 18 appears later in the book. ) The facsimile is printed on vellum and measures ~21 x 15cm (8-3/8 x 6"). The volume includes a Preface, 45-page Introduction (in French), and the Notes, in the Italian as well as the French translation. Within this section drawings or figures are clearly referenced and printed on tipped-in plates facing text. An Appendix contains a full treatment of Folio 18 (recto and verso), with mounted facsimiles of the two pages along with notes and plates of the figures. The book completes with a 2-page alphabetical index. This is a clean copy - the only marking a lovely custom bookplate of the journalist and critic, Ugo Ojetti. Front endpapers are foxed and toned. Pages are near fine, the first leaves moderately foxed but otherwise foxing is very scant and pages are fresh. Vellum hardcover is titled in gilt on maroon leather spine label. Vellum is a bit darkened, but overall very good, no splits of chips. Binding is firm, hinges and book block intact and straight. 9-3/4 x14". 156 text pages, 2-page Index plus the facsimile.         VERLAINE, Paul. Odes en son honneur. Paris, Léon Vanier, 1893. E.O. Dédicacé.

Leon Vanier - VERLAINE, Paul. Hand-Coloured Master Copies for the Printing Three New York Yacht Club Invitations.

New York: for the New York Yacht Club, 1893–99 - 3 cards, two measuring 190 × 140 mm, the other 140 × 178 mm, ink and watercolour on heavy card stock. Now window mounted as a group, framed and glazed in a hand-made walnut veneer frame with gilt sight-line Overall a little browned, but very good. Two cards hand-lettered and with hand-colored NYYC pennants, the other, printed but the pennants coloured by hand. Two of the cards are signed in pencil with the distinctive "Tiffany" in the lower left. The third is partially printed with hand coloured pennants and is signed in ink by J.V.S. Oddie, secretary of the NYYC. Tiffany was the house designer for the NYCC, producing numerous trophies and medals for the club, and designing and manufacturing decorative fittings and features for the new clubhouse, a masterpiece of restrained American Belle Époque styling, that opened in 1901. The immense skylight in the Model Room, the largest Tiffany glass commission, is rightly renowned. Highly attractive and evocative.

Old Naval Prints (Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements)

Hartford: American Publishing Co, 1893. Print. A complete set of 24 attractive chromolithographs on heavy paper showing 75 different U.S. naval vessels. Prints vary slightly in size but are approximately 11" x 14"; image size is approximately 8" x 12". Each print is numbered and labeled on the reverse. The images are all in excellent shape, however they have some marginal soiling and edge wear including chipped corners and short marginal tears. All would mat and frame well. These prints were prepared from Cozzens' watercolors and used to illustrated Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements by J. D. Jerrold Kelley. The illustrations range from early American ships, like the Constitution, through those of the Civil War, like the Kearsarge, to those of the 'New Steel Navy" including all of the ABCD (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Dolphin) ships launched in the mid-1880s. Few intact examples remain as the prints were frequently removed for display. In 1916, a stash of almost 100 sets of the prints were found and sold under a new title, Old Naval Prints. It is likely this set came from that stash. Cozzens was an important turn-of-the-century maritime painter whose most famous works illustrated the racing yachts of the 1880s . Individual prints from this scarce set retail for $175-$350.

        Bayonne Historique et Pittoresque .

1893. E. Hourquet, Libraire-Éditeur. 1893 - Imprimerie A. Lamaignère. Bayonne (Bayona), Francia. Edición limitada a 200 ejemplares, nº 112. 1 Vol. . 114 pp.+40 láminas. Folio Menor. Media Piel con Puntas. .
