Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-1869

Albemarle Street, London: John Murray, 1893. 4th Edition Printing Unknown. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Ex Libris with an attractive bookplate, on the front paste-down, of Robert Ellis Cunliffe. This is the 4th edition bound by Zaehnsdorf in the distinctive snowflake pattern boards. The book is inscribed: "With kind regards from the Author, Feb 1911". I have no provenance regarding the authenticity of the inscription. The volume has been in my possession for many years and was purchased by me from the shop of a professional dealer. I have had correspondence with someone who owned examples of Whymper's handwriting and he was of the opinion that the words"... with kind regards from..." are not in Whymper's hand, nor that of his wife's, but that the words "... the Author, Feb 1911" are most likely Whymper's. I have checked other examples found on the web and tend to agree with this conclusion. The book is tightly bound and clean throughout except for the end papers which are a little browned. All maps are present and are clean and bright and untorn apart from one which has a four inch tear along a crease (see image). The boards are a little grubby but with only superficial marks. The spine is faded with wear along the bottom edge. The leather label is marked and chipped and lifting along the edge but is still clearly legible (see image).

South Australia. Journal of the Elder Exploring Expedition, 1891

Adelaide: Government Printer, 1893. Folio, 78 pp., with two large folding maps each measuring 720 x 1530 mm., very good in recent black cloth. Enormous geological chart of the central desert. First published report of the Elder Scientific Expedition of 1891, complete with the two magnificent lithographic maps of the central desert on the border of Western and South Australia. The expedition was privately funded by Sir Thomas Elder, who had earlier bankrolled the first great desert journey of Ernest Giles. It was led by surveyor general David Lindsay, a celebrated explorer of the Northern Territory. Lindsay took charge of the Elder Scientific Expedition with the stated intention of exploring the unknown interior of Western Australia between the routes laid out by Forrest in 1874 and Giles in 1875 'for the purpose of completing the exploration of Australia'. The expedition travelled 2,745 miles through unexplored country, mapping 80,000 square miles. Sadly, the men were besieged by internal conflict and all but one member of the scientific team resigned. This marked an abrupt end to Lindsay's career as an explorer. This report, published by order of the South Australian parliament, predates the first public edition printed by C. E. Bristow. The two maps are splendid indeed, both illustrate the same geography however the second map is overlaid with geological types printed in six colours.

Kings Of Cricket: Reminiscences And Anecdotes With Hints On The Game

Bolton: Tillotson 1893 - Richard Daft (1835-1900) was among the leading batsmen of his day (1858 to 1891), with his peak being the 1860s and early 1870s, when he was regarded as the best professional batsman in the country. Most of his major cricket was played Notts and the All-England Eleven, whom he captained from 1871 to 1880. In 1879 he led a strong side to North America, which beat a XV of Philadelphia. Here, he holds forth about the players of his time, offering fascinating insights into the life of a pro cricketer during the late 19th century. He is especially strong on his days with the All-England XI. The introduction by Andrew Lang is considered a model of the genre and a classic piece of cricket writing. First Edition. Small 4to. xiv + 274pp + i-viii. Portrait frontispiece, 80 further portrait plates of eminent cricketers of the day. Violet Martin's working copy with some corrections and a wonderful inscription. Their adventures begin with their buying of a neat governess cart and a mule called Sibbie to pull it and from there we read the delightful misadventures of the two ladies. The strange characters they meet, the habits of Sibbie, the isolated hotels they stay in are all described with the laconic wit and sharp eye that make this into an exquisite jewel of travel lore.

A Voice from Ireland on the Home Rule Bill. Speeches Delivered and Resolutions and Petition Adopted at a Special General Synod of the Church of Ireland, Holden in Dublin on the 14th March, 1893.

1893 - 4to pamphlet. Duplicate original printed wrappers, stapled, preserved in a green-cloth flap-case with a leather label lettered in gilt; pp. 30; the outer wrapper is a little browned to the spine and the edges, with a few small stains to the edges, nonetheless very good. First edition. A pamphlet dictating the speeches held at the second General Synod of the Church of Ireland in protest to the second Home Rule Bill proposed by William Ewart Gladstone. This Synod was only the second of its kind to be held by the church, the first being when Gladstone first proposed the Bill in 1886. Unlike the first Bill, the second attempt was passed by the House of Commons only to be refused by the House of Lords, of which eighty-six of its members were affiliated with The Irish Union Alliance, founded in 1891 specifically to oppose Home Rule.         Harry Houdini signs a cover page of the biography of a fellow "wizard", the financier Jay Gould

"His signature, ""Harry Houdini, Phila. May 22-08,"" on the full title page, with preface page attached to verso, removed from Trumbull White's biography of financier Jay Gould, The Wizard of Wall Street and His Wealth, or The Life and Deeds of Jay Gould. (1893). Some minor marginal losses, not affecting signature or text, light soiling and toning, else very good condition overall with a fine, dark signature. An unusual, but apt association piece, considering that both men were masters of deception in their respective fields. "

        Mes prisons.

Paris, Leon Vanier, 1893.. 2014, n°113). Tres bel exemplaire, tres bien relie en maroquin a l'epoque dans un elegant decor Art Nouveau, couverture conservee, non rogne..
