Hand-Coloured Master Copies for the Printing Three New York Yacht Club Invitations.

New York: for the New York Yacht Club, 1893–99 - 3 cards, two measuring 190 × 140 mm, the other 140 × 178 mm, ink and watercolour on heavy card stock. Now window mounted as a group, framed and glazed in a hand-made walnut veneer frame with gilt sight-line Overall a little browned, but very good. Two cards hand-lettered and with hand-colored NYYC pennants, the other, printed but the pennants coloured by hand. Two of the cards are signed in pencil with the distinctive "Tiffany" in the lower left. The third is partially printed with hand coloured pennants and is signed in ink by J.V.S. Oddie, secretary of the NYYC. Tiffany was the house designer for the NYCC, producing numerous trophies and medals for the club, and designing and manufacturing decorative fittings and features for the new clubhouse, a masterpiece of restrained American Belle Époque styling, that opened in 1901. The immense skylight in the Model Room, the largest Tiffany glass commission, is rightly renowned. Highly attractive and evocative.

Old Naval Prints (Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements)

Hartford: American Publishing Co, 1893. Print. A complete set of 24 attractive chromolithographs on heavy paper showing 75 different U.S. naval vessels. Prints vary slightly in size but are approximately 11" x 14"; image size is approximately 8" x 12". Each print is numbered and labeled on the reverse. The images are all in excellent shape, however they have some marginal soiling and edge wear including chipped corners and short marginal tears. All would mat and frame well. These prints were prepared from Cozzens' watercolors and used to illustrated Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements by J. D. Jerrold Kelley. The illustrations range from early American ships, like the Constitution, through those of the Civil War, like the Kearsarge, to those of the 'New Steel Navy" including all of the ABCD (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Dolphin) ships launched in the mid-1880s. Few intact examples remain as the prints were frequently removed for display. In 1916, a stash of almost 100 sets of the prints were found and sold under a new title, Old Naval Prints. It is likely this set came from that stash. Cozzens was an important turn-of-the-century maritime painter whose most famous works illustrated the racing yachts of the 1880s . Individual prints from this scarce set retail for $175-$350.

        Bayonne Historique et Pittoresque .

1893. E. Hourquet, Libraire-Éditeur. 1893 - Imprimerie A. Lamaignère. Bayonne (Bayona), Francia. Edición limitada a 200 ejemplares, nº 112. 1 Vol. . 114 pp.+40 láminas. Folio Menor. Media Piel con Puntas. .

Wraps. Very Good. Short inscription and signature of Bellaigue on FFEP. Scarce, with no copies located anywhere. N.d., circa 1920s. 4to. 24 by 16 cm. 16 leaves, with color plates and humorous captions and text bubbles all on rectos. This was a humorous promotional publication of Radiola, a French maker of radio receivers in the 1920s. J. C. Bellaigue (1893-1931), son of belletrist Camille Bellaigue, was a French book, magazine and poster illustrator known especially for his depictions of early aviation. He also was a designer for the French national carpet and tapestry manufacturer of Beauvais. The humor is all about preposterous accidents, frustrations and screw-ups relating to radios from when radios were a real novelty. Much of the same humor might with slight variation be applied to our PCs, iPhones, iPads, etc. The caricatures in the drawings are funny even without the specifics of the particular situation. Light use.

PAGES: Hand-written title page, two pages, and then numbers 1-28. In total 88 leaves, written on one side only. BINDING: Cloth backed Marbled boards. === Baron Frederic Derlanger: Anglo-French composer. His father was a German and his mother an American. He began his musical studies in Paris under Anselm Ehmant, his only teacher. His first work, a book of songs, was published during the composer's twentieth year, and shortly afterwards he took up his abode in London as a banker, becoming a naturalised Englishman. His compositions include works of all kinds, notably the operas: Jehan de Saintre (Aix-les-Bains, 1 Aug. 1893; Hamburg, 1894), 'Inès Menso' (produced, under the pseudonym of Ferd. Regnal, in London at Covent Garden on 10 July 1897, and subsequently in Germany); 'Tess' (after Thomas Hardys 'Tess of the Durbevilles'), produced at the San Carlo Theatre, Naples, on 10 April 1906 and at Covent Garden on 14 July 1909; and 'Noël', produced at the Paris Opéra-Comique on 28 December 1910. Among d'Erlanger's other works are a string Quartet, a Sonata for violin and pianoforte, an 'Andante symphonique' for cello and orchestra, a Quintet for pianoforte and strings, a 'Suite symphonique' for orchestra (1895), a violin Concerto, Op. 17 played by Kreisler at the Philharmonic Concert of 12 March 1903, and a 'Concerto symphonique' for piano and orchestra (1921). More recent is a Requiem for solo voices, chorus and orchestra (1931). Clearness of form and elegance of idea and expression are the distinguishing marks of D'Erlangers music, whether in his operatic work, in his chamber and orchestral music, or in his songs.

Spectacular 1893 Illustrated Advertising Cover for A. A. Vantine & Company Promoting their Wholesale Goods to Retailers

New York: A. A. Vantine & Company, 1893. Envelope. Very Good. The envelope, made from sparkling Japanese paper, measures 3" x 5" when folded and 10" x 13" when unfolded. It is filled with multi-color images of Japan (Mount Fuji and seaside scenes), a wide variety of Asian merchandise sold by Vantine, and Japanese and Chinese men celebrating Christmas. A. A. Vantine's was one of the first and largest importers of Asian goods in the United States and dominated the American market well into the twentieth century. Vantine opened his first "Oriental Store" in New York City in 1866, after years of selling trade goods to gold miners in California where he first became captivated by Asian ceramics and textiles. After a slow start, his sales exploded, and by the 1870s, Vantine stocked thousands of items and had branch offices located throughout the United States. This very scarce postal advertisement is truly spectacular in size, illustration and content.

24 Chromolithograph Prints from Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements

The United States with an Excursion into Mexico: Handbook for Travellers

Leipsic (i.e. Leipsig): Karl Baedeker, Publishers, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. xc, 516 pages. The first Baedeker guide to the United States and the first to be written in English. Hinrichsen E259. First edition (first printing). An exceptional copy, seemingly never opened for reading. Collated complete will all maps, with most, including the large map of the Unites States, never unfolded. There is a very slight bit of fraying to the cloth in three or four places. The spine is slightly dimmed. There is a small previous owner's name on the front free endaper. To top it off, this copy is in the original unprinted dust jacket with the title label affixed to the spine, as was Baedeker's custom in the 1890s. The jacket has some chips and wear at the corners and spine ends, and several folds (it may have been folded and inserted in the book, which is why it survives). A great copy, almost never found this nice, let alone in the jacket.
