Karl Baedeker, Publisher, 1893. - First Edition. 6 1/4" x 4 1/4" original red cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, all edges marbled, c, 516 pp., complete with 17 maps in color (some folded) and 22 plans (some folded). Tipped to the front free-endpaper is a sheet from a physician's prescription pad on which he has written from Arlington's Hotel Washington to the Homestead Hotel in Hot Springs, Virginia. The first Baedeker guide to the United States, and the first to be written in English. An extensive guide-book with maps and plans of all major cities, and tourist destinations such as Yellowstone National Park, the Battlefield of Gettysburg, the Grand Canyon, the Yosemite, and including Mexico. Including a brief history of the U.S. and since the country is so large a range of suggested tours: "The plan of tour must depend entirely on the traveller's taste and the time he has at his disposal. It is manifestly impossible to cover more than a limited section of so vast a territory in an ordinary travelling season; but the enormous distances are practically much diminished by the comfortable arrangements for travelling at night. Among the grandest natural features of the country, one or other of which should certainly be visited if in any wise practicable, are Niagara Falls, the Yellowstone Park, the Yosemite Valley, Alaska, and the Grand Canon of the Colorado. Along with these may be mentioned the canons, mountains, and fantastic rocks of Colorado, the grand isolated snow-covered volcanic cones of the Pacific coast, the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky, the Cavern of Luray, the Natural Bridge of Virginia, and the Shoshone Falls." (page xxiii) Using his own travel experiences, Karl Baedeker guided the tourist to the main attractions at each location, saving travelers the expense of both time and of hiring their own guide. The reliability of the information was ensured by annual journeys by Baedeker himself and by reference to respected published sources and expert scholars. For the serious tourist a Baedeker guide was indispensable. The rear free-endpaper is detached and present. Otherwise, this is a clean, tight example of the guidebook. Very good.         ALS Rev. Charles H. Parkhurst, campaigner who brought down corrupt Tammany Hall.

1893 - ALS from Charles Henry Parkhurst (1842 - 1933), American social reformer and minister, on Boston Athletic Association letterhead, dated Oct. 1893: "Your letter reaches me at a moment when I am engaged in a pretty hot fight and the only sentiment that seems to me on the [topic?] is a quotation from St. Paul: "Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil". This quotation is likely a reference to the undercover anti-corruption work that Parkhurst was personally engaged in at the time; he had gone in disguise to collect hard evidence of police-protected crime demanded by a New York municipal grand jury. Parkhurst went to gambling saloons, prostitution dens and after hours saloons to gather the proof of crime and police extortion which he presented in a sermon to the scandlized city.Parkhurst had been elected president of the New York Society for the Prevention of Crime, and had challenged Tammany Hall from his pulpit. Parkhurst's campaign against Tammany led to the appointment of the investigatory Lexow Committee, and the eventual election of a reform minded mayor. [with] the title page to 'Our Fight with Tammany', by Parkhurst, Scribner's 1895. Title page with previous owner name, Joseph H. Randle. ALS folded, 4 1/ x 7". [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Poems Dramatic and Lyrical by John Leicester Warren, Lord De Tabley.

London & New York: Elkin Mathews & John Lane; Macmillan & Co, 1893. One of 100 special copies in a splendid full vellum & gilt Ricketts binding. One of 100 special copies on japanese vellum. 5 illustrations by Charles Ricketts plus a reproduction of the bookplate by William Bell Scott for the author. Pp. xiv, 213. 8vo., original full vellum elaborately decorated in gilt to a design by Charles Ricketts with his monogram in gilt. Very mild bowing to the boards as usual, a few small marks but generaly a very good copy. With the bookplates of Sir John Leslie of Glasnough Castle and his son Shane Leslie who has added an ink inscription "Shane Leslie, in Limerick, Jan 1946". Shane Leslie, cousin of Winston Churchill and from an important Anglo-Irish family, was a prolific writer and great advocate of Irish Home Rule. Lord De Tabley (1835-1895) was a very distinguished bibliophile, numismatist and botanist who achieved recognition with this collection of poems. Drinkwater wrote of him, after placing him in the second rank of poetry, "of the essential elements of poetry there is scarecely one which which he was not richly, very richly endowed..he perceived the world clearly and intensely as a poet...he had a great sense of diction and an almost phenomenal vocabulary, and his poetic temper was nobly sensitive to all thrilling and poignant beauty. And yet, for all his splendid qualities, his is not among the great names..never was there more exasperating genius".

The tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane.

[colophon: Hammersmith: Pr. by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press 12mo (15 cm, 5.9"). [4], 96, [2] pp.. 1893] Lovely example of a Kelmscott small-format press production: the first of a series of four medieval French romances both translated and printed by Morris, this one about the lovely and virtuous but cruelly defamed Jehane, who regains her good name by masquerading as her husband's squire. Morris printed a total of 365 copies, 350 of which were on paper, as is this example; the opening double-page spread features one of his unmistakable white-on-black grapevine borders, and the subsequent black-letter text is highlighted with decorative capitals and with subject headings printed in red. Binding: Stunning signed binding by Leonard Mounteney, exhibition finisher for Rivière & Son: full green levant morocco, covers and spine lavishly gilt-tooled with red morocco floral onlays. Board edges with gilt roll; inside, gilt dentelles and doublures of red watered silk. Top edge gilt. Uncut copy. Binding as above, spine slightly darkened with rubbing to raised bands; in later and thoroughly fresh marbled paper–covered slipcase. Original blue paper wrappers bound in. => A jewel to be treasured.

Lawrence and Bullen, 1893 The Guild of Women-Binders was founded by Frank Karslake (who also founded The Hampstead Bindery) in 1898. It operated until 1904 as a loosely-knit federation of women binders from such groups as the Edinburgh Social Union, the Kirkby Lonsdale Handicraft Class, the Chiswick Art Workers' Guild, and Miss Bassett's Leighton Buzzard Handicraft Class for crippled girls, among others. Some of the more outstanding women binders represented by the Guild included Miss Constance Karslake, Miss Edith de Rheims, Florence de Rheims, Miss Helen Schofield, Mrs. Frances Knight, Mrs. Macdonald, Miss Lilian Overton, and Miss Edwards. The Guild, together with its counterpart, The Hampstead Bindery, published The Bookbindings of To-morrow in 1902, and held both exhibitions and sales of their bindings at Sotheby's.  This copy of the second edition of Nisbet's, Russian Fairy Tales, illustrated by C. M Gere, is bound in full Niger morocco, hand embossed with a design of oak branches and acorns, bordered with triple gilt rules.  The design is repeated on the six-paneled spine.  Gauffered green stained edges with gilt ornaments.  Marbled endleaves.  Laid-in is an advertising sheet, explaining the "Niger Binding".   This binding is signed twice, once with the Guild binder's ticket and stamp on the verso of the front free endpaper and additionally a leather label showing Chiswick Art Guild on the lower inside cover.  An exceptional example of the Guild's scarce embossed bindings. A fine copy.

1893 - [with 1893 dust jacket] With Forty-six Illustrations by Harry Furniss. London: Macmillan and Co., 1893. 5 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition of Carroll's conclusion to his 1889 novel/fairy tale, written with an even more serious tone than the earlier book. We say "novel/fairy tale" because that's exactly what it is: one plot is set in the real (Victorian) world, and touches upon serious issues such as religion and morality, while the other concurrent plot is set in the fantasy world of Fairyland, filled with nonsense elements and poems (à la Alice).~Included are many illustrations, often bordering on the grotesque, by Harry Furniss. The dedicatory verse hides the name of the dedicatee (Enid Stevens) in the third letter of each line.~This is a fine, bright copy of this handsome volume. Included is the dust jacket, grey paper printed in dark blue (with "cash price 7/6net" printed on its spine -- which agrees with the price on the book's title page, "price three half-crowns" -- though it does appear as if a label with a different price may once have resided there). The jacket is in very good condition, virtually entirely present, with grey reinforcing paper applied on the verso to the top and bottom half-inch. Williams Madan & Green 250.         Jacobi Kirchhof in Hamburg. Tempera auf Leinwand.

[Hamburg] 1893 - Etwa 120 : 150 cm. Einfacher, schmaler Holzrahmen. Arthur Illies, Verzeichnis der Bilder Nr. 172. - Ausstellung »Arthur Illies. Das Frühwerk Gemälde und Graphik 1890-1914«, zusammengestellt von Carsten Meyer-Tönnesmann im Museum für das Fürstentum Lüneburg, 3. April bis 13. Mai 1984. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Pony Race for Polo Ponies

New York: Henry T. Thomas, 1893. Heliotype. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling in the margins, a few small losses in the top right and left corners, and slight discolouration of the paper due to age. A fine plate depicting the fourth of six races run at the Hempstead Farms on October 19, 1893, from the nineteenth-century publication 'Sporting Incidents'. Introduced to America by the British settlers, horse racing has been a popular spectator sport since the mid-seventeeth century. "Pony-racing, particularly, has taken a firm hold upon the fancy of its followers, and, under the wise and sportsmanlike influence of the American Hunt and Pony Racing Association, the popularity of this form of sport has steadily increased." (Steele) Published during America's Gilded Age, 'Sporting Incidents' is a portfolio of elaborate illustrations depicting equine sporting events and accompanied by H. Milford Steele's eloquent descriptions of the history and status of these activities. It was primarily intended to glorify the increasingly fashionable sports of coaching, hunting, polo and steeple chasing. In its introduction, Colonel William Jay, a founding member of the Coaching Club, extolled the beneficial effect such activities had on the health, behaviour, and moral character of both participants and spectators and explained that the "aim of the artist in this book has been to reproduce such horses and carriages with such details of their equipment as may be useful as hints to those who need them, at the same time furnishing a standard of correctness in such matters."

Landscape Gardening in Japan [together with:] Supplement to Landscape Gardening in Japan: Second and Revised Edition

Tokyo: Printed by the Hakabunsha (volume II by The Maruzen Kabushiki Kaisha)... Published and sold by Kelly and Walsh, Limited,, 1893 & 1912. 2 volumes, folio. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, gilt lettered and decorated front covers, back covers stamped in blind, gilt patterned endpapers. 37 plates (including some tinted lithographs) and numerous illustrations to the text in volume I, volume II with 40 tissue-guarded collotype plates from photographs. Spines a little rolled, a few light marks to back cover of volume I, cloth split at foot of back joint on volume II (but quite sound), a few other light peripheral abrasions, scattered foxing. An excellent set. First edition of volume I, second and revised edition of volume II. In 1876 Conder (1852-1920) was contracted to the Japanese Imperial Government as professor of architecture at the Imperial College of Engineering, which "involved him in teaching the first generation of architects in the Western tradition and in acting as architect to the new energetic and innovative Japanese government Â… [however] Conder arrived in Japan receptive to it and to its culture. He taught his students to admire and be proud of the great Japanese temples and castles" (ODNB). The present work is demonstrative of this reciprocity, being the first study to introduce the Japanese garden aesthetic to Western readers. A handsomely produced work, and an essential addition to any gardening library. The superb collotypes in the supplement were produced by the great Japanese photographic pioneer Ogawa from his own photographs.

        Illustrated Catalogue of Piano-Forte Actions

New York: Wessell, Nickel & Gross, 1893. Oblong quarto. (9 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches). Lithographed four-colour decorative title, 56 lithographic plates (comprised of: 2 tinted views of the factory, 1 tinted composite group portrait of the three company owners, 7 plates printed in silver and black, 46 printed in colours, silver and gilt), all by Lindner, Eddy & Clauss of New York. Publisher's maroon morocco-grained cloth, title blocked in gilt on upper cover (spine chipped at head and foot, rear free endpaper with small loss) An early piano catalogue with wonderful semi-abstract lithographed plates. A detailed trade catalogue of piano actions produced by Wessell, Nickel & Gross, who had learned their trade with Steinway & Sons before leaving to set up on their own in 1874. In 1888 they opened a sizeable factory between 45th and 46th Streets on Tenth Avenue in New York City, "the most extensive and complete manufacturing institution of its kind in the world..." (p. [2]). By the time the present work was published in 1893, they had become one of the leading manufacturers of piano-forte actions in the United States. Their brand and tradition of quality was revived in 2005, when their trademark was bought by the Burgett brothers. To the modern eye, the unintentional virtue of this work is to be found in Lindner, Edy and Clauss's beautiful and technically spectacular plates. The publisher's intentions were to produce technically precise images of their products. To the modern eye, these plates are viewed through a lens tinged by images of the work of the Suprematists and Constuctivists working in Russia in the 1920s - particularly El Lissitzky. The strongly-coloured semi-abstract plates have the same sense of the militaristic triumph of the machine that can be found in the work of the Russian Avant-garde. The Dadists would have approved. Scarce. OCLC locate only four copies: Cambridge, The Smithsonian, NYU and The Winterthur Museum. Not in Romaine. For the lithographers see Jay T. Last The Color Explosion p.46.

        Old Mexico 1893

[Chicago?]: Mayo & Weed, 1893. Photo album, 38 x 28 cm, consisting of a suite of 168 albumen photos in large format, 80 measuring 24.5 x 19cm, and 88 measuring 19 x 12cm, totaling 168 photos in all. Charles A. Mayo and J. E. Weed made up a photography partnership based in Chicago, Illinois. Their firm, Mayo & Weed, acted as ?"special artists?" for Grafton?'s Tours, which was also Chicago based. They photographed the sites which the tour company would visit, both in Alaska/Pacific Northwest and Mexico. Then an album of the photos would be made available, including a few of the tour group added at the front of the album to give a personal touch. The number of photographs per album would vary, depending on the price paid. Albums dating from 1891, 1895 and 1897 have been recorded. They are rare: two of these albums have appeared at auction in the last 50 plus years, one having 80 photos, another slightly over 200: OCLC records two holdings, one at Princeton, the other not indicated, but apparently SMU (DeGolyer). Locations photographed include Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Leon, Guadalajara, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Cholula, Zacatecas, Queretaro, etc., as well as city and country scenes, notable buildings, places of business, portraits of different types of laborers, etc. Several of the photos in the front are of New Orleans (3), Galveston (2) and San Antonio (2). Almost all of the photographs are labelled in the negative as to location or subject matter. This album, from 1893, is in extremely good condition, and has preserved the photographs very well. Very good.

Manuscript - Solicitors' Letter Book - 170 Draft Documents Pertaining to Dalquharran Castle and Kennedy Estate, Foreign Investments in Australia and a Fascinating Link to Poet Robert Burns

Edinburgh 1893 - Edinburgh, 1893. Letter Book Archive of draft documents made by the law firm Campbell, Martin & Boswell, for private estates and business agreements, neatly preserved in a custom binding, featuring little known details relating to the Dalquharran Castle and Kennedy estate, Scottish investments and links to Australia, and a fascinating connection to the renowned poet Robert Burns by way of a lease made with his descendent for a mansion estate which he, too, had personally visited. 8vo. Approximately 170 documents, most in manuscript and some in typescript, 1166 pages combined, with a scant few integral blanks, plus unpaginated manuscript index listed alphabetically by document type. Very large volume measuring 23 x 35 x 9 cm (WxHxD) and weighing 10 pounds. Quarter calf over brown cloth boards labelled in gilt to spine, original marbled endpapers. Bookbinder's label to front pastedown (Caldwell Brothers of Edinburgh). Very good condition, an excellent depository volume of legal and historical interest. The firm Campbell, Martin & Boswell, consisted of three solicitors, each with the title and privileges of "Writers to the Signet", John Douglas Boswell, W.S.; Patrick William Campbell, W.S.; and Francis John Martin, W.S., the latter of whom became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1892. Their office was at 1 North Charlotte Street in Edinburgh, which was the same address as the Royal Bank of Scotland, and situated very near to Charlotte Square. Scots law and legal proceedings of the late nineteenth century, much of which differ today, are well illustrated in this archive of original working documents executed by accomplished patrician lawyers representing some discriminating and aristocratic clients. Many of the documents deal with property conveyance and estate matters, and represent traditions no longer observed, including the obsolete " Trust Disposition and Settlement" procedure for claiming an inheritance. Other documents include assignations, land conveyances, bond and disposition in security, deeds of assumption and discharges, estate inventories, a search for deeds with the Register of Sasines, leases, loan proposals for purchasing commercial space in Edinburgh, records of monetary investments in Highland Railway (HR), Jamaican plantations, property to let in Scotland, Australian banks, and so forth. So exclusive and intertwined were the upper class and wealthy, perhaps not large in number, but surely powerful in society, some interesting genealogical and business connections can be made from examining these papers. Many clients are also relations to the solicitors who often acted as trustees. In one case, we find a multi-generational connection between the Campbell and Burns families, beginning with the Jamaica sugar plantation owner Patrick Douglas and Scotland's celebrated national poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). In addition, these documents shed light on the leasing history of the Dalquharran Castle in South Ayrshire, which included hunting rights for at least one resident, as well as the Kennedy family's monetary investments in Australia. Interesting to note, one of the lawyers from this firm, Mr. Campbell, is related through marriage to the castle's then most recent owner, Mr. Francis Thomas Romilly Kennedy (died in 1892). Some items of special interest: • A twenty page lease agreement was issued to a Glasgow coalmaster named Robert Burns (1844-1896), who was the great-great-grandson and namesake of the famous poet and lyricist Robert Burns (1759-1796) - who had visited the very same Mansion House of Garrallan in his day, being a friend of its proprietor at the time, Dr. Patrick Douglas. A fascinating and detailed document, the lessors were concerned with mining royalties, minerals specifically deemed as belonging to the Marquis of Bute, and minerals raised at the mansion house. [Garrallan was owned by the Campbell family until 1676. The Douglas family followed but it became extinct in the male line. Dr. P

Tokyo 1893, Hakubunkan. Blue stitched stiff wrs., 5 vol.. set, very good, Japanese text, 15.4 x 23 cm., 37+58+46+56+51. double-folded leaves,19 color, 49 b.w. woodcut illustrations. hand-printed on hand-made Washi mulberry paper. R A R E. A valuable & secret work, outlining the techniques of how to make some of the most essential products used in Japan [and China]. * Traditionally the art & technique of making such basic products was guarded by the tradesmen. Families carried on the same trade for generations, and strictly passed down these exclusive techniques only to one's heir or disciple. * This work is one of the earliest published and complete "how to" texts to break with that tradition of silence and fully describing these techniques and the associated technology. * A complete discussion, with illustrations of the plants, tools, great presses, and other machinery and technology associated with the production of sugar, Sake [rice wine], oils, lacquer, Tofu, noodles from flower, cotton and hemp. * Not only a technology, but a superb botanical, a "how to grow" also a text on how to identify which parts of plants are used & at what time in their growth cycle. This is also a commercial botanical, for cash crops for would-be growers. * This careful study outlines how to plan, make and use of the plants and moreover how to extract the vital fluids to effect manufacture of the finish product. * By and large Japanese native plants were used, each related plant used is pictured in color, as a mature tree, showing the flower, leaves, fruit and useful parts are clearly identified. *** THE CONTENTS: Volume 1 begins with discussion of the lacquer tree. How to extract the resin, what tools are employed, with pictures of each tool and appliance. It continues with the technique for the extraction of oil [sap] in the form of a large plank is used with successive wedges pounded in to put pressure against the berries, all wedges & tools shown in detail. Other methods include steaming of the berries, or grating against a great grader with steel blade, the result is boiled, then pressed with a great wedge-like beam with wedges hammered in to exert pressure. In one technique, a great water wheel is employed in a series of pestle-like hammers to crush some dried berries, while other rotating boxes are also attached to the same water wheel to sift and dry the grains. This primitive machine was skillfully and completely made from wood. ** Volume 2 continues with the making of sugar from sugar cane. The plant is shown in color as are all plants used, with the associated buckets, presses, dryers, boiling sheds, and two pictures of what looks like a foreign-made boiler or separator with each part is carefully identified & labeled for reproduction by Japanese. The Japanese had almost no steel for machinery at this time but did have a very limited access to copper for such projects, but were still very late in using steel for such machinery or complicated items. Since sugar cane growth was limited to Okinawa and the Southern-most parts of Japan, sugar from this source was limited in supply and distant. A native kind of "sugar beet" was also employed and could be grown in Northern climes. * The work continues in the same vein, illustrating & outlining a host of other valuable & useful plants to make Sake [from fermented rice], Soy sauce and Tofu from soy beans, and of special interest is the making of buck-wheat noodles. The whole process is carefully illustrated ending in the hanging to dry the nearly 2 meter lengths of noodles on the rack, and final packaging. * The next major food was Tofu. The basic technique involved the boiling of the soy beans, to extract the milk. The tools are wooden boxes with holes to allow excess water to flow out through fine silk mesh, after the Nigari a kind of "bitters" or alum like material was added to make the hot milk congeal into solid. The details of the box, its size & location of holes are carefully drawn in instructional sketches, followed by the techniques, temperatures &c. Hemp is the next product discussed, having been grown and used in Japan for ages. Its uses were for clothing fiber as well as rope-making. * The method of extracting the fiber from the famous cannabis-satavia [marijuana] is outlined & illustrated. The last plant discussed is cotton. With lovely color pictures of all parts of the plant, cultivating and harvest processes, hand-ginning &c. Lastly are the agricultural tools used, long handle hoes, rakes & other implements carefully drawn with sizes and uses. * Each volume also has a chart at the front showing what provinces and villages are producing which products and in what quantities, with statistics. Since this work discusses essential products, its understandable that the Japanese could not function without these basic & essential products. * LACQUERE TREE Lacquer was used for bowls, boxes and in art manufactures. Sake was of course, the national drink after tea, Tofu was the main source of protein for the poor and lower classes who could not afford or did not have access to fish or meat [land-locked communities]. Noodles also a national product was consumed in large quantity during the whole year, thus the ability to dry and save noodles was important to their diet. * OIL EXTRACTION Oils were also essential and needed to cook, fry, lubricate much of Japan. The whole work is truly a magnificent and graphic record of early pre-industrial Japan. * This is also a great late record of the primitive wooden machines and manual techniques employed on the eve of the industrial revolution, which hit Japan just after 1900, some seven years after the publication of this work. Its probably the last look at the ancient & traditional methods, of producing Japan's famous native products. * One gets the distinct impression that Miyazaki published this book with the idea that it would also be important to record for posterity the old native ways before they were replaced by steel machines run by steam, and later electricity. * ILLULSTRATED: The work is so meticulous and written & illustrated in such detail, that one can easily feel that Miyazaki had a premonition of the eminent major changes in the next few years. Living in Tokyo and near-by Yokohama, perhaps he had seen what had happened to other trades under the influence of foreign contact, which caused major changes to Japan as foreign science and technology entered via Yokohama & Tokyo which impacted all phases of native Japan culture & business. *** THE EDITOR: Miyazaki Yasuda [1623-1697] was an agriculturist, born in Hiroshima, who served Lord Tadayuki Kuroda, Lord of Chikuzen Clan. He toured various provinces and made a firsthand study of agricultural conditions and problems. Upon return, he made attempts to introduce land reforms based on Confucian ideology. He is regarded as on of the three great agriculturists of his time. This title is ENCYCLOPEDIA ON FARMING, completed one year prior to his death. See: Japan Biographical Encyclopedia & Who's Who, p.889. *** CONDITION: Covers a trifle rubbed at extremities & corners, contained in an indigo-blue folding Chitsu case, with bone clasps, original title slips, contents bright hand-printed by woodblocks on very white clean Washi hand-made paper. . OSAKA 1896 EDITION: This is bound in the original yellow blind-stamped swastica & bell-patterned stiff stitched covers, 15.2 x 22 cm. Each cover has the title label stating "SAIBAN NOGYO ZENSHO", and a brushed personal library # in the upper right corner, with a cinnabar Hanko/seal in the upper right corner of the first page in each volume reading Sakuramatsu, likely the former collector's name. . The covers of vol.1 are dusty, with a red title page, the balance of the set is by and large clean with a few minor rubs here or there, contents bright, clean.. . * TITLE: Ahead of title is KOHEKI, then the title continues: NOKOH ZEN SHO [Edgren expresses a variation in the Romanization of title], both are one in the same book. * AUTHOR: Miyazaki Yasusada [1623-1697], and also Kaibara Rakuken [1625-1702] [aka Gakuken], see Edgren's note p.261], which is correct, being a slight variation on Miyazaki. There is a slight variant to the author's first name, which is common as he used several "Go" or "Studio" names. The co-author is correct. *** REFERENCES: J.       [N.p. 1893, n.p.]. Two photographs making a panoramic view. of the "Harbour-Singapore" per the pencilled caption, each. photo is ca 28 x 21 cm., albumen type photo, board mounted,. 59.5 x 24 cm., verso blank, strong, clear images. R A R E !. AN EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY PHOTOGRAPH OF THE SINGAPORE HARBOUR This pair images are the only ones found among a group of superb photographs of China: Hong Kong and Shanghai, apparently taken by a member of the of the British Missionary society. It could have been Mr. Taylor or Mr. Potts, Keswick or anotheR missionary who's photo graces that group. The group of missionaries seem to have come from England to China via Singapore, possibly aboard the Empress of Japan or the Empress of India, both of which are cited and photographed in the China group of photos, all of which bear the dateS "/93" or "/94." in ink as captions. * THE VIEWS: The left image shows the entrance to the harbour, with a very early dock installation and a small sailing vessel under way, at the right are some smokestacks and other facilities, indicating activity. The second or right hand image shows a continuation of the harbour area, other small sail boats, small village and a travellers' palm. In the background can be seen to large smoke stacks billowing out smoke. * There is an old pencil caption at the bottom, which reads: "Harbour-Singapore." Obviously, the caption was essential to recognize such an under-developed area to a person who had never been to nor seen Singapore before. * CONDITION: This is a lovely pair of early photographs. They are board mounted, and thre are some old mended tears to the board, one small tear at the top right enters the top of that photo by aboutone cm., but it also is an old repair. There is an old scratch to the negative on the right margin of the right hand image, otherwise none. All in all a very good set of photographs. * Color scans can be sent by email.         Montezuma's Daughter

Longmans, Green, and Co, London 1893 - Maurice Greiffenhagen. Hardcover. First Edition of this Aztec romance. Author's Presentation Copy, inscribed "To Andrew from his affec brother H Rider Haggard 1894." Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was the author of a number of adventure novels set in exotic locales. His books, including She and King Solomon's Mines, are still popular today. Haggard traveled to Mexico in 1891 to do research for this book and sadly his young son died while he was away. The book describes the first interactions between the Spanish and South American natives, as well as murders, shipwrecks, and slavery. Colonel Andrew Haggard, who had a distinguished military career - he was one of he first British officers to command in the Egyptian army - was also a successful novelist, travel writer and poet. It is known that Andrew helped Rider with the writing of Dawn and he likely played an important role in helping his younger brother with the several bestsellers which revolved around Egypt and mummies. There are 25 black and white illustrations by the British painter and illustrator Maurice Greiffenhagen. He was Haggard's friend, which led him to illustrate several of his adventure books, starting with She in 1889. Bound in the original publisher's blue-green cloth with gilt author and title to front cover and spine. Light bumping, small chip to bottom of faded spine. Hinges a bit tender but text block is tight. Interior pages are clean. Bookplate of collector Mark Samuels Lasner to front pastedown. Very good condition. 325 pages plus 24 page publisher's catalog. LIT/012016. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
