        Jane Avril Jardin de Paris.

Poster for Jane Avril's appearance at the Jardin de Paris. Paris: Chaix 1893. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1898. Plate no. 110.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

        1893 Paperback Wisden

Hi, This lot is an Original 1893 Wisden Paperback. In Good to Very Good Condition. The book has had some touch ups to the spine paper and edge of the covers but it is hard to tell. This book is a tale of 2 parts: The covers are quite dark and a bit greasy looking with a stamp to the front (none inside) but internally it is a nice clean book with only the spotty tissue paper that is unclean, nice and square with odd spotting to the odd page, mainly around the very good photoplate. Tightly bound.

A Monograph of the Coraciidae, or the family of the Rollers.

      - Farnborough, published by the author, 1893. Folio (370 x 285mm). pp. xx, 111, with 27 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates after and by J.G. Keulemans. Contemporary red half morocco, spine in 5 compartments with gilt lettering. A scarce monograph published in an edition of 250 copies only. This beautifully illustrated work was intended by the author as a companion to his 'Monograph of the Meropidae'. Keulemans was the last of the great bird illustrators. "The great value of Keulemans' work as an ornithological draughtman lay in his sureness of design of the plate and his accuracy in portraying the birds themselves. The bird figures were carefully drawn and executed down to the last scales on the feet. The feathering was neatly delineated with the different plumes receiving sympathetic treatment, the fine soft underplumage and the large flight feathers being equally well drawn" (Jackon, C.E. Bird Illustrators p. 90). A fine copy.Fine Bird Books, 72; Nissen IVB, 270. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Nakaz Eja Imperatorskago Velicestva Ekateriny Vtoryja Samoderzicy Vserossijskija Dannyj Kommissii o Socinenii Proekta Novago Ulozenija. St. Petersburg: Izd. L.F. Pantelieeva, 1893. 53, 201 pp. Text of Nakaz in Russian with parallel French translation. Original stiff paper wrappers, worn, soiled and with a few faint stains, spine perished, rear wrapper detached, first few signatures detached. Moderate toning to text, faint dampspotting to a few leaves. Small early owner label to front free endpaper, internally clean. * The last edition published in the nineteenth century. The Nakaz, or Instruction, is a statement of legal principles written by Catherine II between 1764 and 1766. It was among her most ambitious and significant undertakings. Infused with the ideas of the French Enlightenment, and copied mostly from the work of Voltaire, Montesquieu and Beccaria, it was compiled as a guide for the All- Russia Legislative Commission convened by the Empress in 1767 to create a new code to replace the 1649 Muscovite Code. Revised in consultation with Frederick the Great and Voltaire, the Instruction proclaimed the equality of all men before the law and denounced torture and the death penalty. Unfortunately, her proposed code was never completed. The first two editions, one with parallel texts in Russian and German, were published in 1767. OCLC locates 1 copy in a North American law library (Columbia). Another copy located at Harvard Law School. Butler, The Nakaz of Catherine the Great 526 (Entry 18).

Autograph letter signed "Bonus" to "Melchior" [the German conductor, Hermann Levi] discussing the Munich premiere of the composer's opera Hänsel and Gretel

      - 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Frankfurt, [?]September 27, 1893. In black ink. With address "Frankfurt a. M. Eschersheimer Landstr. 100" stamped in purple ink to head. In German (with translation). An important letter about the forthcoming Munich premiere of Humperdinck's opera, Hänsel and Gretel. The composer discusses casting, musical alterations, and a piano reduction of the opera with his correspondent, the prominent conductor, Hermann Levi. He also names several singers active in Munich, including Hermann Gura and Emanuela Frank."For the part of the father, more consideration has to be given to the acting abilities rather than those of the voice; I believe, thus, that [Hermann] Gura is the right man for the job. With regards to the Hansel part, I will be glad to approve, if some parts are placed in a higher register. I was in Mainz yesterday, at Schott's, and learned that the completion of the piano reduction by the beginning of November is impossible."Slightly worn and stained; creased at folds; some words to first page slightly waterstained, not affecting legibility. Together with:A vintage bust-length postcard photograph. Postmarked [?]Vienna, August, [19][?]23. Slightly worn. Hermann Levi (1839-1900) was the general music director of Munich at the time of this letter. "While working together in Bayreuth, Humperdinck and Levi had become good friends, calling one another by the nicknames 'Bonus' and 'Melchior.' In the summer of 1891, Humperdinck had come to see Parsifal with Hugo Wolf and when he met Levi, he told him of his new fairy tale opera [Hänsel and Gretel]. Levi was interested and asked to have the orchestra part for a composer's festival in Munich. Humperdinck sent him the Dream Pantomime, but the score arrived too late for the concert. Meanwhile Levi was soon so delighted by Humperdinck's music that he asked [Ernst von] Possart to secure the rights for the first performance of the opera. [Felix] Mottl from Karlsruhe and [Richard] Strauss from Vienna also both wanted to perform it. But Humperdinck said that if 'Melchior' were to conduct it, the first performance would have to be in Munich." Frithjof Haas in Hermann Levi: From Brahms to Wagner. Unfortunately, the Munich première, which was to occur on December 14, 1893, had to be postponed because one of the principal singers fell ill. Richard Strauss premièred it instead, on December 23, 1893 at the Hoftheater in Weimar.

Original green buckram, covers richly gilt with a floral design by Housman, gilt edges, minimal wear at head and foot of back-strip, a very fine copy beautifully colored by Gloria Cardew with her ticket. First edition. Housman’s marvelous and disturbing images of the strange little furry goblin men who so tempted the two virginal young sisters are among the most interesting and unusual illustrations of the decade. Johnson, Fantastic Illustration, 117. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790-1914, 279: “This book is a delight to behold… (the binding and illustrations) combine to make a harmonious and elegant whole.” Hodnett, English Book Illustration, page 204, remarks on how much improved Housman’s work is in the book. Boss, The Turn of the Century 6, 112. “Cardew (her name considered by Denis Collins in an article for the IBIS Journal to likely be a pseudonym) was a young artist associated with the Guild of Women Binders, whose work was exhibited alongside theirs by the Charing Cross Road bookseller Frank Karslake. Cardew was among the finest exponents of the art of hand-colouring.” (Blackwell’s).

In this 61-page journal, Graham provides a detailed, well-written, and entertaining personal account of his experiences at the fair with entries about the whale-back steamer "Christopher Columbus," the reindeer and dogcarts at the Esquimaux Village, excellent Orange Cider and fishy-smelling exhibits the Florida building, a mammoth 22,000 lb cheese from Canada, the multi-color fountain illumination, enormous military guns at Germany's Krupp exhibit, camel riding on the streets of Cairo in the Midway Plaisance, riding on the giant Ferris Wheel, the California Ostrich Farm, impressive Swiss carvings and music boxes, the hand-carving of character-headed canes at the French Colonies exhibit, a $100,000 diamond at the Tiffany exhibit, mummies from the Field Museum, Buffalo Bill's Wild West (an exceptionally long and detailed account that includes Annie Oakley, Johnny Baker, Buffalo Bill's rescue of a wagon train, an attack upon the Deadwood Stage, Mexican lasso tricks, a "tumbling" display by Arab and Syrian horsemen, the Pony Express, a Buffalo hunt, etc.), the manufacturing of Springfield Rifles, an exhibit about Greeley's North Pole Expedition, the catastrophic fire in the Cold Storage Building that killed 15-25 civilians and fire-fighters, exhibits of seemingly countless electrical devices and inventions, hand-made cigar manufacturing, Hagenbeck's Circus (a horseback riding lion, a bicycle-riding tiger, lions pulling a tiger in a chariot, acrobatic bears, etc.), glass-making and Princess Eulalie's glass dress at the Lilly exhibit, the Moorish Palace with its Enchanted Maze of mirrors, and much more. Graham also recounts the armed robbery of the boarding house in which his family stayed. An additional 60 pages of text in the rear of the journal provide detailed and occasionally illustrated instructions for several dances including the Irish Reel, Mrs. McCloud's Reel, Irish Jig, and Waltz Clog. This is an exceptional description of the Columbian Exposition from one of its visitors.

        Montezuma's Daughter

London: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1893. Hardcover. Very Good. Maurice Greiffenhagen. Maurice Greiffenhagen. Hardcover. First Edition of this Aztec romance. Author's Presentation Copy, inscribed "To Andrew from his affec brother H Rider Haggard 1894." Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was the author of a number of adventure novels set in exotic locales. His books, including She and King Solomon's Mines, are still popular today. Haggard traveled to Mexico in 1891 to do research for this book and sadly his young son died while he was away. The book describes the first interactions between the Spanish and South American natives, as well as murders, shipwrecks, and slavery. Colonel Andrew Haggard, who had a distinguished military career - he was one of he first British officers to command in the Egyptian army - was also a successful novelist, travel writer and poet. It is known that Andrew helped Rider with the writing of Dawn and he likely played an important role in helping his younger brother with the several bestsellers which revolved around Egypt and mummies. There are 25 black and white illustrations by the British painter and illustrator Maurice Greiffenhagen. He was Haggard's friend, which led him to illustrate several of his adventure books, starting with She in 1889. Bound in the original publisher's blue-green cloth with gilt author and title to front cover and spine. Light bumping, small chip to bottom of faded spine. Hinges a bit tender but text block is tight. Interior pages are clean. Bookplate of collector Mark Samuels Lasner to front pastedown. Very good condition. 325 pages plus 24 page publisher's catalog.         Autograph letter signed "R. Leoncavallo" to an unidentified male correspondent

      - 3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated [Rome,] December 25, 1893. In black ink. On stationery with the name and illustration of the Hôtel Belle-Vue in Rome printed at head. In Italian (with translation). Leoncavallo describes at length, and with considerable anguish, some of his problems with publishers, journalists, and librettists. This letter is particularly intriguing for its account of the intense rivalry between the two greatest publishers of Italian opera in the late 19th-century: Ricordi and Sonzogno."A group of people [at the Milanese newspaper, La Tribuna] are determined to make me suffer for the double sin for which I am not to blame: The first is that of belonging to Sonzogno. The second is that of not belonging to Ricordi, and so this is the way that petty journalists and politicians judge a work of art, which has cost me so much work, so much anxiety, and so many tears! And for the first time all around me I feel discord and coldness and indifference and it brings me great sorrow." Slightly worn, soiled and stained; creased at edges and folds; two small tears to edges of central fold; two small holes to center of second leaf. Together with:A postcard photograph of the composer. Slightly worn; small stains to verso. "Ricordi owned the rights to nearly all of the traditional Italian repertory, including the works of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi; and through Lucca, the Italian rights to Wagner's operas. Sonzogno, beginning in 1874, had acquired the Italian rights to the works of virtually the entire body of contemporary French composers, including Bizet, Massenet, and Thomas. Among the emerging composers of the 1880s and 1890s, Puccini was the prize of Ricordi's 'stable'. Sonzogno, who was far more aggressive in seeking out younger composers, had nearly the entire giovane scuola under contract, including Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Giordano, Cilèa, and a number of lesser-known figures. " Alan Mallach in The Autumn of Italian Opera: From Verismo to Modernism, 1890-1915, p. 212.Less than two months before Leoncavallo wrote this letter, his opera, I Medici, had been premiered in Milan with little success. Indeed, in spite of the successful premiere of Pagliacci the year before, it became increasingly difficult for Leoncavallo to have his works performed in Italy. Both Pagliacci and I Medici would be well-received in Germany, however, "where audiences were favorably inclined to works of the Giovane Scuola." Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online.

Essays in London and Elsewhere [In the Rare Dust Jacket -- the second earliest known Henry James dust jacket]

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1893. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/good +. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first American edition, first printing, in a Good + or better example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET, BEING THE SECOND EARLIEST HENRY JAMES DUST JACKET KNOWN TO EXIST. In addition to being a prominent novelist, and writer of short stories and novellas thrice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature (1911, 1912, and 1916), Henry James is particularly noted for his Literary Criticism. Time Magazine described James as “... a great American novelist who wrote more superb criticism than any compatriot, before or since.” Of James, the New York Times stated: “James possessed a point of view tailor-made for the vocation of literary criticism. He once memorably described the critic's life as 'heroic', for it is immensely vicarious. He has to understand for others.” "Essays in London and Elsewhere" collects a number of Essays earlier written by James, which Essays cover a wide range of writers including James Russell Lowell, Gustave Flaubert, Pierre Loti, Henrik Ibsen, and Mrs. Humphrey Ward. The volume also presents an Essay on the role of the critic in literature, as well as a work of travel writing about London, and a eulogy of actress Frances Anne Kemble. James also comments on "A Journal of the Brothers De Goncourt" [a literary journal written by French naturalism writers Edmond de Goncourt and Jules de Goncourt providing a view of the literary and social life of their time], and presents an imaginative work, "Browning in Westminster Abbey", an Essay which later appeared in "English Hours" (1905), wherein James notes Robert Browning's interment in Westminster Abbey's Poets Corner, using the occasion to comment on Browning as a Poet -- as well as on Browning's poetic method -- and imagining the comments that would be given by the great English figures already buried there. The collection fittingly concludes with a fictional dialogue titled "An Animated Conversation" wherein the characters wittily discuss the literary relationship between Britain and America. The book is in Fine, Superior, condition with a touch of pushing to the spine ends and a touch of rubbing to the spine ends and board corners. The silver decoration to the front board and spine, as well as the spine's gilt lettering, remain quite lovely and bright. The pastedowns and adjacent endpapers show some offsetting from the dust jacket, and a number of pages are uncut at the leading edge, showing this copy to be unread. The exceedingly rare dust jacket is in Good + or better condition showing some chipping to the spine panel head -- not affecting the lettering, as well as some chipping to the spine's left edge. A small portion of the lower spine is detached but present, as is the front flap. That the dust jacket is present is itself quite remarkable. Dust jackets for books of this era often were provided, if at all, for protection of the book until it reached the buyer's shelves, at which time dust jackets were routinely discarded. Notably, this dust jacket's spine is printed with the book's title, but the author and publisher are not identified, tending to show that the publisher did not expect the book's buyer to retain the dust jacket. A six-page catalogue is found at the rear. As noted above, the dust jacket is indeed RARE. The earliest known example of a Henry James jacket is found another Henry James work of literary criticism, "French Poets and Novelists" (Macmillan, 1878), such copy earlier having been on the market priced at $15,000. That copy is now at Yale University. This copy of "Essays in London and Elsewhere" wears the second earliest known Henry James jacket. Copies of the book in a condition as nice as is this copy are, in our experience, exceedingly difficult to find on the market. Copies of the book in the original dust jacket, THE SECOND EARLIEST HENRY JAMES DUST JACKET KNOWN TO EXIST, ARE RARE INDEED. A COLLECTION-DISTINGUISHING COPY. RARE.
