The Mummy Chapters on Egyptian Funereal Archaeology

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1893.. Inscribed First Edition. Octavo, pp.xvi, 404. Bound in the publisher's red cloth, with gilt stamp of Mestha (otherwise known as Imseti) to front board, double-ruled blind panneling to boards, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine; deckled edges, newspaper insert pasted in to front flyleaf, bookplate to front pastedown. With eighty-eight illustrations, in a variety of styles (including photogravure), several of them fold-out, and a list of heiroglyphics. Binding is rubbed; worn and frayed at spine ends, bumped at corners, sunning to spine, and with tidemark to bottom left sixth of upper board, some small tears to proud deckle edges. Internally clean, with author's ink inscription to "Rev Henry Blunt, from the writer" in 1893 to first blank, tidemark to front lower right hand of front paste down, corresponding to tidemark on upper board, short ink notation to rear pastedown concerning Amen Ra in the same hand that labels and dates the review of The Mummy pasted in to the front fly, from the Pall Mall Gazette. Pictorial bookplate, "From the Middle East and Egyptological Library" of Robert William Morrell, MBE (co-founder of the Thomas Paine Society). Budge was one of the most significant early British Egyptologists, who wrote a number of standard works on the history of Egypt and Assyria at the turn of the twentieth century, though these have since been superseded by the work of modern Egyptologists, whose research with the assistance of modern technologies and with the advent of further discoveries in Egypt, have rendered a number of his conclusions unsupportable. The Mummy is a work of admirable scholarship, synthesising scholarship in German, French, and English, to giver perspective on the religious rites and means of preservation used in the process of mummification. The figure on the front board, Mestha or Imseti, was one of the four sons of Horus, venerated as a funerary god, and who appears as a human head on the lid of the canopic jar used to store the liver.

        Rujub, the Juggler.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1893 - 3 volumes, octavo. Original blue morocco-grain cloth, titles to spines gilt, floral designs to boards in copper, pale brown-on-white floral endpapers. Housed in a dark blue cloth solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. A little very light rubbing to extremities, spines a touch sunned, minor spotting to edges. Otherwise an excellent set with the decorative cloth fresh and bright. First edition of this adult novel, published in America under Henty's intended title, In the Days of the Mutiny, which Chatto & Windus rejected for fear it would lead it to be mistaken for one of Henty's children's books. This is one of only seven multi-volume titles by Henty. "In the 1890s, among the last three-deckers to appear in Britain, Chatto and Windus published four novels by Henty. The first, Rujub, the Juggler, was the most popular, 11,000 copies being sold, practically all within three years. It was the eighth of his eleven adult novels: though selling fewer copies than his best boys' books, the later titles were, contrary to often expressed belief, remarkably popular" (ODNB). The imminent demise of the three-decker format explains the lavishness of the cloth decoration here, a doomed attempt to justify the expense of such a publication format. By the end of the following year, the three-volume novel was effectively dead. Dartt, pp. 114-15; Newbolt 56.1; Wolff 3164 ("a book almost never to be seen"). [Attributes: First Edition]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien Döbling, 29. XII. 1893. - 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Spectacular 1893 Illustrated Advertising Cover for A. A. Vantine & Company Promoting their Wholesale Goods to Retailers

New York: A. A. Vantine & Company, 1893. Envelope. Very Good. This advertising envelope, made from sparkling Japanese paper, measures 3" x 5" when folded and 10" x 13" when unfolded. It is filled with multi-color images of Japan (Mount Fuji and seaside scenes), a wide variety of Asian merchandise sold by Vantine, and Japanese and Chinese men celebrating Christmas. A. A. Vantine's was one of the first and largest importers of Asian goods in the United States and dominated the American market well into the twentieth century. Vantine opened his first "Oriental Store" in New York City in 1866 after years of selling trade goods to gold miners in California where he first became captivated by Asian ceramics and textiles. After a slow start, his sales exploded, and by the 1870s, Vantine stocked thousands of items and had branch offices located throughout the United States. This very scarce postal advertisement is truly spectacular in size, illustration and content; it will be used to illustrate a chapter on A.A. Vantine in the soon-to-be-published reference book, "Re-envisioning Japan: Meiji Fine Art Textiles," edited by John E. Vollmer that is scheduled for release by 5 Continents Editions of Milan in the summer of 2016.

In: Der Schweizer Sammler, Bd. 15, H. 1-2, 1941, p. 9).

London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1893. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. One of 500 copies. A nice copy of this collection of poetry by Francis Thompson (1859-1907). Thompson aspired to be a writer but became addicted to opium after college and was homeless for several years. He was discovered and rescued by the writers Wilfrid and Alice Meynell, who arranged for the publication of his this, his first book of poems. He published more works before his early death at 47 from tuberculosis. This book includes his most famous poem, The Hound of Heaven, which describes the pursuit of the human soul by God. This poem is the source of the phrase, "with all deliberate speed," used by the Supreme Court. A phrase in his The Kingdom of God is the source of the title of Han Suyin's novel and the movie Love is a Many-Splendored Thing. In addition, Thompson wrote the most famous cricket poem, the nostalgic At Lord's. He also wrote Sister Songs (1895), New Poems (1897), and a posthumously published essay, "Shelley" (1909). He wrote a treatise On Health and Holiness, dealing with the ascetic life, which was published in 1905. G. K. Chesterton said shortly after his death that "with Francis Thompson we lost the greatest poetic energy since Browning." Among Thompson's devotees was the young J. R. R. Tolkien, who purchased a volume of Thompson's works in 1913-1914, and later said that it was an important influence on his own writing.Bound in grey cloth with the famous cover and spine design by Laurence Housman. Housman also did the frontispiece illustration and title page ornament. Covers are bumped and somewhat soiled but still very good. Offsetting to endpapers, light spotting to free endpapers and darkening to page edges otherwise clean. 81 pages plus 14 page publisher's catalog. POE/071916.

        Poems Here at Home

New York: The Century Co., 1893 HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents ONE OF ONLY FIFTY COPIES IN THE WORLD from the LIMITED FIRST EDITION of POEMS AT HOME by JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY. Bowen-Merrill of Indianapolis (L. Frank Baum's publisher, later becoming Bobbs-Merrill) was Riley's first publisher (after all, he was an Indiana guy). Bowen-Merrill had a disastrous fire in 1890, destroying most of the business and taking 10 lives. This volume was published by Century in New York, yet this 50 volume LIMITED EDITION seems to have been controlled by Bowen-Merrill. Opposite the copyright page appears: "Of this First Impression of Poems Here at Home, Fifty copies…..have been issued with an autographed portrait on japan vellum (signed) The Bowen-Merrill Co. (printed) This is Number (penned) 14." A signed frontispiece portrait of the author is present. 4 1/2" x 7", 187 pages in Very Good Plus condition, with some smudging and light tanning. Cover (special for limited edition, cream w/ elaborate gold gilt designs and particulars, while standard First Edition cover was green with gold lettering) in Good Plus condition, with thoroughly taped spine to prevent separation, rubbing and staining. No dust jacket or slip cover (as designed?) E. W. Kemble was a very famous illustrator.

        Old Mexico 1893

Mayo & Weed, [Chicago?] 1893 - Photo album, 38 x 28 cm, consisting of a suite of 168 albumen photos in large format, 80 measuring 24.5 x 19cm, and 88 measuring 19 x 12cm, totaling 168 photos in all. Charles A. Mayo and J. E. Weed made up a photography partnership based in Chicago, Illinois. Their firm, Mayo & Weed, acted as "special artists" for Grafton’s Tours, which was also Chicago based. They photographed the sites which the tour company would visit, both in Alaska/Pacific Northwest and Mexico. Then an album of the photos would be made available, including a few of the tour group added at the front of the album to give a personal touch. The number of photographs per album would vary, depending on the price paid. Albums dating from 1891, 1895 and 1897 have been recorded. They are rare: two of these albums have appeared at auction in the last 50 plus years, one having 80 photos, another slightly over 200: OCLC records two holdings, one at Princeton, the other not indicated, but apparently SMU (DeGolyer). Locations photographed include Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Leon, Guadalajara, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Cholula, Zacatecas, Queretaro, etc., as well as city and country scenes, notable buildings, places of business, a penitentiary, portraits of different types of laborers, etc. Several of the photos in the front are of New Orleans (3), Galveston (2) and San Antonio (2). Almost all of the photographs are labelled in the negative as to location or subject matter. This album, from 1893, though quite heavy, is in very good condition.

        Rujub, the Juggler.

London: Chatto & Windus,, 1893. 3 volumes, octavo.

Old Naval Prints (Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements)

Hartford: American Publishing Co, 1893. Print. A complete set of 24 attractive chromolithographs on heavy paper showing 75 different U.S. naval vessels. Prints vary slightly in size but are approximately 11" x 14"; image size is approximately 8" x 12". Each print is numbered and labeled on the reverse. The images are all in excellent shape, however they have some marginal soiling and edge wear including chipped corners and short marginal tears. All would mat and frame well. These prints were prepared from Cozzens' watercolors and used to illustrated Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements by J. D. Jerrold Kelley. The illustrations range from early American ships, like the Constitution, through those of the Civil War, like the Kearsarge, to those of the 'New Steel Navy" including all of the ABCD (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Dolphin) ships launched in the mid-1880s. Few intact examples of that book remain as the prints were frequently removed for display. In 1916, a stash of almost 100 unbound sets of the prints were found and sold under a new title, Old Naval Prints. It is likely this set came from that stash. Individual prints from this scarce set retail for $175-$350. Cozzens was an important turn-of-the-century maritime painter whose most famous works illustrated the racing yachts of the 1880s.

My Dark Companions and their Strange Stories.

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company Limited,, 1893. Octavo. Original brown pictorial cloth, title in gilt to the spine and upper board, all edges gilt, black surface-paper endpapers. Frontispiece and 17 full-page illustrations, historiated initials and numerous illustrations to the text. Extremities very lightly bumped and rubbed, small pale mark to lower outer corner of front board, hinges a touch cracked and neatly repaired, contents toned, a very good copy. First edition, warmly inscribed by the author, "May these legends culled in Darkest Africa be as pleasant to read as they were to hear from the lips of the Companions of my travels. Henry M. Stanley, London, June 1902" on the front free endpaper, with the joint bookplate of Belle and Kermit Roosevelt to the front pastedown. Son of Theodore Roosevelt, Kermit was born in 1889, and despite being "a quiet, dreamy, rather detached child", developed a considerable taste for exploration and adventure (DAB). In 1909 "while at Harvard, he accompanied his father on an expedition to East Africa, serving as photographer. As his father noted with delight, 'the rather timid boy of four years ago has turned out a perfectly cool and daring fellow.'" He subsequently joined his father's near-fatal exploration of the River of Doubt in Brazil; accompanied the British forces in Mesopotamia during the First world War, winning the Military Cross; organized scientific expeditions into Turkestan and China for Chicago's Field Museum; and in 1939 became a British citizen in order to join the Army, seeing active service at Narvik in 1940, he died in 1942 by his own hand in Alaska while on intelligence duty with the US Army. He had married Belle Wyatt Willard, the daughter of the US Ambassador to Spain, on his return from the River of Doubt expedition in 1914. An attractive association copy of this collection of camp-fire stories, gathered from "real aborigines of the interior ? the choicest and most curious of those that were related to me during seventeen years".
