A Voice from Ireland on the Home Rule Bill. Speeches Delivered and Resolutions and Petition Adopted at a Special General Synod of the Church of Ireland, Holden in Dublin on the 14th March, 1893.

4to pamphlet. Duplicate original printed wrappers, stapled, preserved in a green-cloth flap-case with a leather label lettered in gilt; pp. 30; the outer wrapper is a little browned to the spine and the edges, with a few small stains to the edges, nonetheless very good. First edition. A pamphlet reporting the speeches made at the second General Synod of the Church of Ireland in protest to the second Home Rule Bill proposed by William Ewart Gladstone. This Synod was only the second of its kind to be held by the church, the first being when Gladstone first proposed the Bill in 1886. Unlike the first Bill, the second attempt was passed by the House of Commons only to be refused by the House of Lords, of which eighty-six of its members were affiliated with The Irish Union Alliance, founded in 1891 specifically to oppose Home Rule. "In calm, dignified, but at the same time, emphatic and resolute language, that protest [against the introduction of another Bill by Mr Gladstone] was conveyed. It was tersely and appropriately expressed yesterday in a series of resolutions, and appropriately expanded in the eloquent speeches in which they were proposed and supported by some of the most powerful intellects in the Church." These intellects included The Bishops of Derry, Cork and Limerick, the Earl of Belmore, the Archbishop of Dublin and the Provost of Trinity College.

The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane. [Translated from the French by William Morris].

16mo. ; choicely bound by E. Rau of St. Petersburg in full orange crushed morocco, lettered in gilt on spine, boards with a semi of stylized flowers within a single gilt and dog tooth panel, central initial of "W" on upper board and "M" on lower board, richly gilt inner dentelles over marbled endpapers; pp. [iv] 96 colophon; double-page woodcut border, text printed in black and red in the Chaucer type. A fine copy in slipcase. 350 copies were printed, with an additional 15 copies on vellum. Of the 360 copies 76 copies were purchased in sheets by J. and M.L. Tregaskis and sent to bookbinders throughout the world, the object being to mount an international exhibition of bookbinding. The 73 copies which were actually bound, and displayed at the exhibition in 1894, are now in the John Rylands Library, Manchester. The one example from Russia in the exhibition was bound by E. Rau of St Petersburg and this copy is similar in design to the copy submitted for the exhibition and now in the Rylands Collection. The bindings both have a pattern of flowers across the boards although the tools used are of different sizes and frequency. The Tregaskis copy repeats the flower pattern on the spine but on this copy the gilt work on the spine is in panels. William Morris's initials are reversed on the two copies. The Tregaskis copy has "M" on the upper board and "W" on the lower; this copy has "W" on the upper board and "M" on the lower. As the Tregaskis copy was to be exhibited with the boards facing out the initials would therefore have read "W" "M". This is possibly a trial copy that Rau chose not to send as his exhibition piece but it seems more likely that it was a second copy commissioned by a collector who saw the Tregaskis copy in the exhibition or the exhibition catalogue. This supposition is supported by the provenance of the book. This copy has the bookplate of Frank Howell on the front paste-down and of American collector Charles Walker Andrews on the front free endpaper. Loosely inserted is a typed letter from J. & M.L. Tregaskis to Frank Howell advertising the upcoming catalogue of the bindings in the exhibition. Howell, we presume, liked Rau's binding and commissioned him to bind up another copy in similar style. As this second copy was not commissioned as an exhibition piece, Rau reversed the initials on the boards to a more logical "W" on the upper board and "M" on the lower.

Volume II: Australian Lepidoptera and their Transformations.Drawn from the life by Harriet and Helena Scott; with descriptions, general and systematic, by A.W. Scott

Sydney: Australian Museum 1890 -, 1893. Letterpress title page browned and some moderate offsetting of the plates (both as usual), some of the wrappers a little chipped; very good overall.. Folio, 36pp. letterpress with eleven handcoloured lithographic plates (numbered 10 to 21 in series); bound in later half crushed navy morocco with marbled boards and gilt spine lettering, with the original tinted pale green decorated wrappers for each of the four sections bound in. A beautiful Australian natural history production, now increasingly scarce on the market as a complete publication. Originally published in two parts some years apart, this bound volume comprises the entirety of Volume II, with plates 10 to 21 in the series and accompanying letterpress. The desirable original illustrated wrappers for each of the four parts comprising Volume II have been retained - they depict the bridge and landing at Ash Island on the Hunter River, the family beloved home of the sisters Harriet and Helena Scott.Alexander Scott published the first volume of Australian Lepidoptera in London in 1864. It contains nine plates after original drawings by his daughters Harriet and Helena, and was issued in an edition of 100 copies only (of which 25 were sold in Australia). The first edition of the first volume is now a rare book and not forthcoming on the market. Some years after the decease of Alexander in 1883, Harriet and Helena instigated the completion of their father's cherished project, and the remaining parts were published by the Australian Museum in Sydney between 1890-1893. The second volume contains plates numbered 10 to 21; attractively Harriet and Helena prepared the lithographic stones which were then printed in Sydney. Some years previously, the sisters received printmaking knowledge from a Hunter Valley neighbour, Samuel Thomas Gill, a skilled artist renowned for his lithographs of goldfields scenes. The plates for Australian Lepidoptera were then sent to be handcoloured in England, using original artworks by the sisters as a guide. It has been the unfortunate fate of many sets to be dispersed with the prints individually framed, and the letterpress by Alexander Scott discarded; complete examples of Volume II with all the parts intact are scarce.

        Jane Avril Jardin de Paris.

Poster for Jane Avril's appearance at the Jardin de Paris. Paris: Chaix 1893. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1898. Plate no. 110.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

        1893 Paperback Wisden

Hi, This lot is an Original 1893 Wisden Paperback. In Good to Very Good Condition. The book has had some touch ups to the spine paper and edge of the covers but it is hard to tell. This book is a tale of 2 parts: The covers are quite dark and a bit greasy looking with a stamp to the front (none inside) but internally it is a nice clean book with only the spotty tissue paper that is unclean, nice and square with odd spotting to the odd page, mainly around the very good photoplate. Tightly bound.

A Monograph of the Coraciidae, or the family of the Rollers.

      - Farnborough, published by the author, 1893. Folio (370 x 285mm). pp. xx, 111, with 27 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates after and by J.G. Keulemans. Contemporary red half morocco, spine in 5 compartments with gilt lettering. A scarce monograph published in an edition of 250 copies only. This beautifully illustrated work was intended by the author as a companion to his 'Monograph of the Meropidae'. Keulemans was the last of the great bird illustrators. "The great value of Keulemans' work as an ornithological draughtman lay in his sureness of design of the plate and his accuracy in portraying the birds themselves. The bird figures were carefully drawn and executed down to the last scales on the feet. The feathering was neatly delineated with the different plumes receiving sympathetic treatment, the fine soft underplumage and the large flight feathers being equally well drawn" (Jackon, C.E. Bird Illustrators p. 90). A fine copy.Fine Bird Books, 72; Nissen IVB, 270. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1893. The Last Edition of the Nakaz Published in the Nineteenth Century Catherine II [1762-1796], Empress of Russia. Bezgin, Il'ia Grigor'evich, Editor. Nakaz Eja Imperatorskago Velicestva Ekateriny Vtoryja Samoderzicy Vserossijskija Dannyj Kommissii o Socinenii Proekta Novago Ulozenija. St. Petersburg: Izd. L.F. Pantelieeva, 1893. 53, 201 pp. Text of Nakaz in Russian with parallel French translation. Original stiff paper wrappers, worn, soiled and with a few faint stains, spine perished, rear wrapper detached, first few signatures detached. Moderate toning to text, faint dampspotting to a few leaves. Small early owner label to front free endpaper, internally clean. * The last edition published in the nineteenth century. The Nakaz, or Instruction, is a statement of legal principles written by Catherine II between 1764 and 1766. It was among her most ambitious and significant undertakings. Infused with the ideas of the French Enlightenment, and copied mostly from the work of Voltaire, Montesquieu and Beccaria, it was compiled as a guide for the All- Russia Legislative Commission convened by the Empress in 1767 to create a new code to replace the 1649 Muscovite Code. Revised in consultation with Frederick the Great and Voltaire, the Instruction proclaimed the equality of all men before the law and denounced torture and the death penalty. Unfortunately, her proposed code was never completed. The first two editions, one with parallel texts in Russian and German, were published in 1767. OCLC locates 1 copy in a North American law library (Columbia). Another copy located at Harvard Law School. Butler, The Nakaz of Catherine the Great 526 (Entry 18).

Original green buckram, covers richly gilt with a floral design by Housman, gilt edges, minimal wear at head and foot of back-strip, a very fine copy beautifully colored by Gloria Cardew with her ticket. Johnson, Fantastic Illustration, 117. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790-1914, 279: “This book is a delight to behold… (the binding and illustrations) combine to make a harmonious and elegant whole.” Hodnett, English Book Illustration, page 204, remarks on how much improved Housman’s work is in the book. Boss, The Turn of the Century 6, 112. “Cardew (her name considered by Denis Collins in an article for the IBIS Journal to likely be a pseudonym) was a young artist associated with the Guild of Women Binders, whose work was exhibited alongside theirs by the Charing Cross Road bookseller Frank Karslake. Cardew was among the finest exponents of the art of hand-colouring.” (Blackwell’s).

Chicago, 1893. Soft Cover. Very Good. Light wear to the journal. Easily read, legible handwriting. Graham was a teen-age boy from a prominent family in Irvington, Indiana, when his family spent three weeks at the Chicago World's Fair between 23 June and 17 July of 1893. In this 61-page journal, Graham provides a detailed, well-written, and entertaining personal account of his experiences at the fair with entries about the whale-back steamer "Christopher Columbus," the reindeer and dogcarts at the Esquimaux Village, excellent Orange Cider and fishy-smelling exhibits the Florida building, a mammoth 22,000 lb cheese from Canada, the multi-color fountain illumination, enormous military guns at Germany's Krupp exhibit, camel riding on the streets of Cairo in the Midway Plaisance, riding on the giant Ferris Wheel, the California Ostrich Farm, impressive Swiss carvings and music boxes, the hand-carving of character-headed canes at the French Colonies exhibit, a $100,000 diamond at the Tiffany exhibit, mummies from the Field Museum, Buffalo Bill's Wild West (an exceptionally long and detailed account that includes Annie Oakley, Johnny Baker, Buffalo Bill's rescue of a wagon train, an attack upon the Deadwood Stage, Mexican lasso tricks, a "tumbling" display by Arab and Syrian horsemen, the Pony Express, a Buffalo hunt, etc.), the manufacturing of Springfield Rifles, an exhibit about Greeley's North Pole Expedition, the catastrophic fire in the Cold Storage Building that killed 15-25 civilians and fire-fighters, exhibits of seemingly countless electrical devices and inventions, hand-made cigar manufacturing, Hagenbeck's Circus (a horseback riding lion, a bicycle-riding tiger, lions pulling a tiger in a chariot, acrobatic bears, etc.), glass-making and Princess Eulalie's glass dress at the Lilly exhibit, the Moorish Palace with its Enchanted Maze of mirrors, and much more. Graham also recounts the armed robbery of the boarding house in which his family stayed. An additional 60 pages of text in the rear of the journal provide detailed and occasionally illustrated instructions for several dances including the Irish Reel, Mrs. McCloud's Reel, Irish Jig, and Waltz Clog. This is an exceptional description of the Columbian Exposition from one of its visitors.

        Montezuma's Daughter

London: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1893. Hardcover. Very Good. Maurice Greiffenhagen. Maurice Greiffenhagen. Hardcover. First Edition of this Aztec romance. Author's Presentation Copy, inscribed "To Andrew from his affec brother H Rider Haggard 1894." Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was the author of a number of adventure novels set in exotic locales. His books, including She and King Solomon's Mines, are still popular today. Haggard traveled to Mexico in 1891 to do research for this book and sadly his young son died while he was away. The book describes the first interactions between the Spanish and South American natives, as well as murders, shipwrecks, and slavery. Colonel Andrew Haggard, who had a distinguished military career - he was one of he first British officers to command in the Egyptian army - was also a successful novelist, travel writer and poet. It is known that Andrew helped Rider with the writing of Dawn and he likely played an important role in helping his younger brother with the several bestsellers which revolved around Egypt and mummies. There are 25 black and white illustrations by the British painter and illustrator Maurice Greiffenhagen. He was Haggard's friend, which led him to illustrate several of his adventure books, starting with She in 1889. Bound in the original publisher's blue-green cloth with gilt author and title to front cover and spine. Light bumping, small chip to bottom of faded spine. Hinges a bit tender but text block is tight. Interior pages are clean. Bookplate of collector Mark Samuels Lasner to front pastedown. Very good condition. 325 pages plus 24 page publisher's catalog.
