Charles Eisenmann (photographer)
Eisenmann. [ca. 1890]. Cabinet card (albumen photographic print mounted on card), approximately 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches. Edges scalloped and gilt, photographer's stamp on recto. Signed by the subjects, "Millie-Christine," on verso. Photographer's stamp rubbed, photo lightly faded and lightly soiled. Very good. Signed cabinet card portrait of the famous conjoined twins Millie and Christine McCoy, by the great photographer of human marvels on the Bowery, Charles Eisenmann. Portrait of the conjoined twin sisters, Millie and Christine McCoy (1851-1912), taken during their 1871-1872 tour of England. The twins, often referred to collectively as "Millie-Christine" or "The Two-Headed Nightingale," were among the most widely viewed, scrutinized, and applauded human anomaliesof the 19thcentury. Billing them often as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," promoters touted the fact that the girls were joined at the lower spine, more intimately attached than Chang and Eng, the original Siamese Twins. Audiences drawn to see the twins remarkable anatomy found themselves marveling likewise at theirmusical performances, radiantpersonalities, and moving personal story.Millie and Christine were born into slavery in Columbus County, North Carolina in 1851 and immediately became a spectacle among curious residents of the surrounding region. By the age of ten months they were sold to a showman for the sum of $1000, and over the next five years they passed through the hands of both bidders and kidnappers, who exhibited them privately to prodding physicians at publicly at dime museums and county fairs. At … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Palgrave
London: MacMillan, 1890. See pictures. Beautiful, but with a little wear. Corners of boards bumped. Edge wear to binding at fore-edges and corners. On close inspection there is a line at the joints, indicating it may have been respined, but it was expertly done, almost imperceptible. Fading and wear to silk endpapers, chip at bottom right corner (.5 cm) of flyleaf. Numerous pencil notes on blank endpaper (binding, etc.). Tipped in letter has lightest foxing. Limitation page has a few very light foxing marks and facing half title page. Dedication page has several small pencil notes at bottom. Handsome wide margins. Occasional binder pencil notes at bottom margins. Rear blank endpapers foxed. Exhibition binding stamp dulled. Despite the notes on condition, it is a beautiful book, very pleasing to see and will add wonderfully to any library. A beautiful exhibition binding of Zaehnsdorf graces this 1890 signed, limited edition of Francis Palgraves venerable Golden Treasury of poetry; with a tipped-in autographed letter, signed (A.L.S.). About the Binding - The small imprint on the rear doublure (silk, in lieu of paper, covering rear board) was Zaehnsdorf's method of delineating their bindings that were displayed at an exhibition. About the Manuscript - A fascinating manuscript letter dated 26 Feb '69, signed, is tipped-in indicating that Palgrave submitted to Punch but may have been unsuccessful (I find no reference to Palgrave in regards to Punch, but it may have been published anonymously). A small pencil note on the letter reads that the letter was given to Shirley Brooks, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stereoview of General George A. Custer published by Taylor & Huntington circa 1890. Image depicts Custer in uniform with his arms crossed. Mounted on an orange cabinet card with "1613. Gen. G. A. Custer. Photograph taken in 1864" printed underneath photograph, "1861 The War for the Union. 1865" printed on left edge, and "1861 Photographic War History. 1865" printed on right edge. On verso is text describing the photographic series and the reasoning behind the publishers' prices. Photo measuring 6" x 3 -1/4" and mounted on cabinet card measures 7" x 4". Stereoview is in good condition with moderate foxing to photo, light wear and chipping to all corners and light soiling on verso. This series of stereoview cards was released about 25 years after the American Civil War. Around 7,000 negatives were found in a building maintained by the Anthony Company, and that was once used by the Civil War photographer, Alexander Gardner. James C. Taylor, war veteran and artist, bought the rights to these negatives and started selling the images in the early 1880's. Taylor also amassed a large cache of orange stereoview cards, like the one used here. Taylor and Huntington formed a partnership circa 1890, which they later called the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, and came out with "The War Memories Catalog" which offered a selection of 228 stereoviews from the Gardner and Anthony negatives, and 200 images from the Gardner large-plate negatives. This stereoview of General Custer not only preserves an important and popular figure in military history but also has an intriguing provenance … [Click Below for Full Description]

Optical Devices / Optical Games:
Germany and France, 1890. Colored prints on paper. Slightly different sizes; approx. 85/90 x 850/900 mm. late 19th century (n.d.). Large collection of early Zoetrope stripes. The Zoetrope is a simple optical device that mechanically generates moving images. It is one of the precursors of cinematography. The Zoetrope consists of a dark, open-top rotatable drum with narrow slits at regular intervals. On the inner wall of the drum lies a strip of paper with pictorial movement phases, with as many pictures as the drum has slots. The drum is rotated and the viewer looks through the passing slots on the strip of paper. Like the flip book, the stroboscopic effect is exploited to create the illusion of continuous movement. The functionality corresponds in principle to that of the film projector. The Zoetrope was invented in 1834 by the English mathematician William George Horner (1786-1837) under the name of Daedaleum or Daedatelum. In the 1860s, the invention was spread under the name Zoetrope or Wheel of life. It was followed by enhancements such as the Praxinoscope. To date, the Zoetrop is known primarily as a children's toy. The present collection contains 47 strips printed recto and verso, and 18 stripes printed recto. Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1550

Leonard S MABEE
[New York]: 1890. Condition: Near fine. Oblong 24mo. black cloth scrapbook with compiler's intials printed in gilt on cover. Contains [~171] leaves with pasted cut-outs of photos and illustrated portraits of stars, about 65 in total, with orginal typewritten (in blue ribbon, but top copy) biographical information for each. About near fine overall. Light soil to rear board. First leaf detached, but otherwise sound throughout, and clean, with just a bit of wrinkling near glued portraits. A carefully assembled and impressively detailed set of photos and bios of contemporary American and British actors, singers, and athletes, about 42 of whom are men, and 23 women. A few of their names include: Mittens Willett, Katie Putnam, Mollie Thompson, Maude Wilson, Hattie Delaro, Captain Jack Crawford, De Wolf Hopper, Frederick Barham Warde, William P. Davidge, Frank Daniels, and Matthew Kilroy. The theatre performers worked in a variety of styles, including vaudeville, opera, and burlesque. Toward the end of the book, the focus shifts to athletes, all of whom are men: many baseball players in the National League, as well as runners, rowers, and a bicyclist. The scrapbook's biographies are quite detailed, some spanning as long as six pages, with information presumably gathered from newspapers; likely also the source of the stars' portraits. An absorbing record compiled by an engaged fan during the embryonic stages of celebrity-focused media in the US.

A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth with the title label applied to the front board and the title and author label applied to the spine panel (the spine shows some minor sunning, most notably to the spine label due to the dust jacket cut out -- see below, and the boards show some minor corner rubs; multiple pages are unopened, or are only partially opened, on their leading fold, showing the book to have been only partially read -- or possibly entirely unread); in a Very Good + example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNSOPHISTICATED dust jacket -- original to this copy of the book -- with scattered small tears and chips and with the arc over the spine label split on one side and nearly so on the other. The viewer will notice, of course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean until put out for sale. Virtually all of the dust jackets for the book would have been discarded. The viewer also will see that the jacket's spine panel was long ago clipped to reveal the author's last name and the book's title -- a common warehouse practice -- which would have made locating the book on the warehouse shelves easier than otherwise would have been the case. "Stories of Borrowed Sex," printed on the verso of the front wrap, documents "several women who served with the greatest distinction" after cross-dressing to become soldiers. This leads into the title and its follow up question: "The New Woman. Ideals Regarding Women Have Changed: Which Makes the Best Wife, the Bicycle Girl or the 'Delicate Clinging Vine'?" Here, the pamphlet pushes back against Victorian expectations of submi … [Click Below for Full Description]
