Ernest Nister London (Bavaria)
E.P. Dutton & Co. New York. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ 1890's ANTIQUE Ernest Nister 1st EDITION BOOK Country Playmates & Town Acquaintances ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ Ernest Nister was a late 19th century/early 20th century German printer and publisher with offices in Germany, England* and in the USA. He began as a printer in Nuremberg in 1877 and had expanded to London by 1888. By 1889, his move to New York was underway. Nister produced a variety of printed items for sale to all three of those locales resulting in items in German meant for sale in Germany and items in English for either the British or American markets. A deal was struck with E P Dutton to be their exclusive agent for items exported to the USA.** This is why all of the items created for selling in the States bear the Dutton name along with Nister's. In addition to their valentines and other cards, collectors look for their games and especially their charming mechanical books. The company can be credited for several innovations in engineering moving books for which they held patents. Among their many ventures, Nister even produced posters for the London Transport. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ WHAT IS NAME OF THE BOOK? - s.d. (circa 1890), 30x26,5cm, relié. - Album eccezionale di 59 fotografie originali in stampa vintage all'albume. [Click Below for Full Description]

The original title "The Quarrel" is written in blue pencil on the verso. 1 vols. 210 x 195 mm ( 8 x 7-1/2 inches.). Edward Windsor Kemble (1861-1933) is best-known for his superb illustrations of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn and Puddin' Head Wilson, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and several of Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories. He was a self-taught artist, whose work "reveals a strong sense of humor and an acute observation of character..." He had a special empathy for Black characters and drew them with an understanding and geniality uncommon in his day" (Reed, p. 20). As noted above, there is a second letter, dated November 16, 1885, in which the artist writes to Rev. Strickland, "Your kind acknowledgement of my little contribution has been received. I send you a photograph of myself which I think is about the best suited to your enterprise..." The photo accompanying the letter is an original, half-length seated portrait of the artist, 4 x 3-1/2 inches, signed by him on the back, with the trademark of Rockwood Photographers, 12 Union Square West, NY. Letters, photo and drawing all bear the rubber stamp of E.F. Strickland, and are docketed in his hand with the date of receipt. Huckleberry Finn, with Kemble's illustrations, was published this same year, 1885. Walt & Roger Reed, The Illustrator in America, p. 20. Fine. Matted.

[Click Below for Full Description]

- s.d. Ahl & Mr F.W. Sawyer in California ». [Click Below for Full Description]

Nijinsky, Vaslav
Russian ballet dancer (1890-1950) and choreographer, probably the most celebrated male dancer in the entire history of dance. Exceedingly rare signed pointe shoe, dated by him in 1914 - at the very peak of his career and when his luck started to change for worse - in calf leather. Size is 9.25 inches, an ornament was probably removed from the front top, shoe comes in a custom made linen folding case printed with an enlarged replica of the signature in the spine. Autographs of Nijinsky are extremely rare, and this is the only signed ballet shoe we have ever seen - and probably the only one in existence. A truly unique, historical item!

The songs of the Taranchi Chinese, the Muslim sedentary population living in oases around the Tarim Basin in today's Xinjiang province of China, with illustrations of their musical instruments. There was a mass emigration of Muslim people from north-western China into the Russian Empire after the failure of the Dungan revolt, 1862-1877. "In accordance with the terms of the Treaty of Saint Petersburg signed in February 1881, which required the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Upper Ili Basin (the Kulja area), the Hui and Taranchi (Uighur) people of the region were allowed to opt for moving to the Russian side of the border. Most chose that option; according to the Russian statistics, 4,682 Hui moved to Russian Empire under the treaty. They migrated in many small groups between 1881-83, settling in the village of Sokuluk some 30 km west of Bishkek, as well as in a number of points between the Chinese border and Sokuluk, in south-eastern Kazakhstan and northern Kyrgyzstan"(Wikipedia).
