James, Henry
In Three Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1890. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt. First English Edition, which consisted of only 500 copies, published a week or two after the two-volume Boston edition. This was the last Henry James three-decker; 1894 is generally considered the year in which that format finally died, though one James title (THE OTHER HOUSE) did appear in two volumes in 1896. THE TRAGIC MUSE marked the end of James's loyalty to Macmillan and Co., who had published all but one of his works since 1878 but would not do so again. As Supino notes, The source of his dissatisfaction was Macmillan's insistence on the half-profits contract (that is, no cash advance and a percentage of the profits when and if the costs of production were met), Macmillan's absence of accountability, its elastic definition of costs, and its habit of remitting profits on a yearly rather than more frequent basis. When Macmillan offered such a contract for THE TRAGIC MUSE, James wrote a letter stating that he would forego publication of the book in England; his agent A.P. Watt stepped in and managed to arrange a compromise for this one book, but the James-Macmillan connection had reached its end. This is a very good-plus copy: the spines are a little askew and darkened, with light wear at the extremities; atypically, the original black-coated endpapers are clean and uncracked. These Henry James three-deckers have become quite difficult to find in collectible condition. Supino 34.8.0; Edel & Laurence A34b. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1890. A local friend, book dealer and book-auction cataloguer said, after examining this rare deluxe set of IN DARKEST AFRICA, "you'll never see a better set." I don't make that claim but this wooden cased Scribners 1890 First American Edition, beautifully presented in ¾ Morocco and marbled boards, is in remarkably well-preserved COLLECTOR GRADE condition - acquired directly from a private Pennsylvania estate. This is a case where my photography skills are not up to accurately portraying these books - they are fresher and more beautiful by far than the pictures indicate - the gold foil edges are gleaming, the books were certainly never paged through and the maps are in the cover pockets. It is hard to believe they are 129 years old - buyer pays 19.95 safe bubble shipping, Insurance and tracking in USA More than just a pretty picture. Try Vendio Image Hosting.

Angel Saturnino Blanco (Dir)
Santo Tome Corrientes Argentina & San Borja Brazil, 1890. Folio. Bound in half calf. Five numbers are restored and a part of the text is missing. We have the following issues : #14, 23, 26-70, 72, 73 (47 issues #3 1/18/1891 and #73 3/17/1892). It is a very famous newspaper but Intruvable , nobody could have it in their hands since it lacks all the consulted bibliographies and no images are reproduced in any book on the subject. Blanco had been holding a tenacious struggle for the respect of the popular will and, in 1878 and 1880, he had loaded arms in defense of his ideas. Not all its action would have to unfold under a bloody sign, but also in the sphere of the thought that it constructs and fecundates. To that end, he publicized - on October 31, 1890 - the weekly called "The peoples of Missions", whose title, with telluric breath, had a certain vindictive tone. It was written by him, whose pen -calm at times- also knew noble sociological and poetic concerns. As a copywriter, Don Feliciano Garay acted. It was this newspaper, incorruptible censor of the political situation of the province and very especially of the department, putting its preaching in evidence the deep state of political decomposition that supported Corrientes. In January 1891, it was published in the Brazilian town of San Borja, explaining its attitude through the following statement: "To keep intact our principles, fulfill the sacred commitments and put 'The Peoples' Missions' and their dearest interests safe from arbitrary wiles, we have solved, much to our regret, emigrate abroad and moving direction an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sherman, William Tecumseh
1890. Sherman's close friend, Margaret Middleton, gifted him with Henry Cabot Lodge's recently published biography of George Washington several days ahead of Sherman's 70th birthday (February 8, 1890). Middleton obviously knew that Sherman admired Washington - feelings clearly expressed again in this letter - and chose the gift accordingly, but he unfortunately appears less than enthusiastic about receiving it. He doubts that he'll learn anything new, but nevertheless pledges to read "every word" in this thank-you letter: "I am this moment 11:30 pm back from Brooklyn whither I went to welcome back home the Rev'd T DeWitt Talmage an enthusiastic earnest and good man. Indeed I have been too busy to read enough of the volumes you were thoughtful enough to send me to answer your kind note properly; but as you date your gift Feb. 8 it gives me the Bankers grace of three days, when I may answer in person. After Washington Irving's five volumes of Washington and Sparks 12 volumes of his letters and correspondence, Lodge must be a brave man to venture any more, but in due time I will read every word of the two volumes for the sake of the donor, and it may be with instruction to myself. I have seen at Washington City some private letters which satisfy me that George had some traits of humanity and love of fun which actually elevate his memory in my estimation above the stern unbending saint he is usually represented. Every People creates its own saint, and we are especially favored in ours, for Washington was above the really great men of his period and will stand the sternest test … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis Carroll
New York: Macmillan, 1890. Good. Illustrated boards with cloth spine, edge & corner wear, cover soil, lacks FFEP, first two pages with creasing, pg. 48 with marginal chip that effects one word, soil at page edges. [Dodgson, Charles] Carroll, Lewis. Nursery Alice. ill. John Tenniel (Cover By E. Gertrude Thomson). New York: Macmillan, 1890. First Edition, American Issue.. Small 4to. . Good Illustrated boards with cloth spine, edge & corner wear, cover soil, lacks FFEP, first two pages with creasing, pg. 48 with marginal chip that effects one word, soil at page edges. Originally suggested to his publisher in 1881, the work was not printed until 1889. When Carroll saw the first run of 10,000 copies he was dissatisfied with the quality of the printing and cancelled the order, though he thought it might appeal to the American market, so 4,000 copies were sent overseas and a new title page was created, replacing "London" with "New York" and dated 1890 without price. Illustrated with enlarged plates from Tenniels original drawings, here printed in color. A new cover was created by E. Gertrude Thomson. The text was adapted by Carroll to appeal to a younger audience. According to Lovett & Lovett Catalog 8 Item #18, this is the true first edition, American Issue. First Edition points: printed on toned paper and Alice's profile is visible on pg. 34. [Attributes: First Edition]

W R Cross
1890. Photograph. Albumen photograph measures 8 -1/2" x 5" on buff mount with title in manuscript underneath image. A portion of Cross' hand stamp is visible on verso. Mount measures 10" x 6 -3/4". Photo taken circa 1890. This image was taken from the middle of a main road in the "Lower Town" of Hot Springs, South Dakota. Photograph is in very good condition with very good contrast, light wear and light soiling affecting content; mount has moderate toning, light soiling, light wear to all edges, and a pinhole on top edge, light pencil marginalia along with glue and paper residue on verso. Many details can be discerned due to the incredible contrast of the photo. Signs that line the street advertise "Flour & Feed," "Restaurant," "Hotel," , "Castles Drug Store," lawyers and doctor's offices and a "Photo Gallery," which could be Cross' establishment. Men stand outside buildings on either side of the street. In the background is a lone church on hill. Some of the structures look to be constructed of Lakota sandstone which was obtained from quarries outside of town. William Richard Cross (1839-1907) was a photographer of the Nebraska and South Dakota frontier. He acquired a gallery in Hot Springs around 1888, photographing the growing town, Native Americans living at the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and the spectacular scenery of the Black Hills.

Lafcadio Hearn [Koizumi Yakumo] 1E 1P RARE DJ
1890. Hearn, Lafcadio; [Koizumi Yakumo] Youma: The Story of a West-Indian Slave [in the RARE 19th Century DUST JACKET] New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth with the title label applied to the front board and the title and author label applied to the spine panel (the spine shows some minor sunning, most notably to the spine label due to the dust jacket cut out -- see below, and the boards show some minor corner rubs; multiple pages are unopened, or are only partially opened, on their leading fold, showing the book to have been only partially read -- or possibly entirely unread); in a Very Good + example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNSOPHISTICATED dust jacket -- original to this copy of the book -- with scattered small tears and chips and with the arc over the spine label split on one side and nearly so on the other. The viewer will notice, of course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean until put out for sale. Virtually all of the dust jackets for the book would have been discarded. The viewer also will see that the jacket's spine panel was long ago clipped to reveal the author's last name and the book's title -- a common warehouse practice -- which would have made locating the book on the warehouse shelves easier than otherwise would have been the case. At the time this book was issued, dust jackets were not generally used to help sell the book and thus … [Click Below for Full Description]

1890. Small collection of eleven cyanotypes depicting sites in the greater Boston area related to the Revolutionary War and parades honoring Revolutionary War heroes, most captioned and dated to verso, the captions hand-written and the dates either written in pencil or rubber-stamped, each photograph also stamped either "Boston, Mass." or "Charlestown, Mass.", sites depicted include: a house on Prince Street used as a hospital by the English after the Battle of Bunker Hill; another house on Prince Street where the British Major John Pitcairn died from wounds received at the Battle of Bunker Hill; the birthplace in Charlestown of Civil War General Charles Devens Jr.; the Boston headquarters of British commander-in-chief General Thomas Gage; and the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument in Charlestown. Images of varying size, most measure approx. 5" x 8". Loose as issued. Boston, 1890-1894. The cyanotype process was developed in 1842 by the scientist and astronomer John Frederick Herschel, and is a photographic printing process often used to create blueprints and copies of notes, or even prints of objects from nature. This collection of cyanotypes is accompanied by a letter dated January 12, 1894 and addressed to Captain Luke Smith of Acton, Massachusetts, which states that these "blue prints" would be of interest to the Captain, whose father fought in the Revolutionary War. Six of the images are also inscribed to verso, "For Capt. Luke Smith."
