Henry M Stanley
ont> Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington: London. Ont> Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington: London, 1890 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A beautifully bound, first edition set of this highly esteemed travelogue and expedition account by Sir Henry Morton Stanley. A classic work of African exploration. The first trade edition of this famous work which traces the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886-1889. This expedition was one of the most important nineteenth century expeditions into the interior of Africa to rescue Emin Pasha who was besieged and threatened by Mahdist forces. Emin Pasha was the governor of Equatoria. This expedition became celebrated for the sheer ambition and the distance of 'darkest Africa' that was travelled by Charles Gordon and his troops. Stanley felt that the expedition was for humanitarian purposes rather than a military conquest. Stanley was appointed to lead the relief expedition and left England in January 1887, arriving at the mouth of the Congo in March. After immense hardships and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1888, charted the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, and emerged from the interior with Emin and his surviving followers at the end of 1890. It took Charles Gordon Stanley just fifty days to write 900 pages of this work. In particular, Stanley's extended account regarding his grueling passage through the Ituri rain forest is something that had not necessarily been documented before. Illustrated, with a frontispiece, fourteen plates, a folding map and numerous in-text illustrations to volume I. To volume I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rydberg, Johannes
London: Taylor and Francis, 1890. First Edition. Three Quarter Leather. Fine. Swedish physicist Johannes Rydberg (1854-1919) developed the first mathematical formula for the spectral lines of hydrogen atom (and other atoms or ions with only one electron). Rydberg's insight came from using "wavenumber" (the inverse of the wavelength) in his calculations. He plotted the wavenumbers of the spectral lines against integers in different series and found that the resulting curves had similar shapes. Using this insight, he developed a function (called the "Rydberg formula") to model these curves. This is the first publication in English of the Rydberg formula. vii, [1], 524 pp. 8vo. 10 plates, 8 folding. Rebound in an exquisite three quarter leather binding with brown leather spine with four raised bands, gold embossed titling on black leather patch titles, marbled paper insets to cover boards. Only indication of ex-library status is ink stamps on the title page. Very clean within. [Attributes: First Edition]

GREENAWAY, Kate
Original Artwork. c, 1890. Two delicately rendered sepia pen and ink drawings, one of a girl playing with a ball, the other of a girl holding bunches of flowers, each with a background of hills and flowers. The girls' dresses and bonnets are beautifully and minutely detailed, adorned with tiny ruffles and bows. Each 12.4 x 7.3 cm, signed 'KG' to the lower left corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. Kate Greenaway's naturalistic, pastoral illustrations featuring detailed historical costumes (Greenaway's mother was a dressmaker) were so popular during her lifetime that they helped to shape the contemporary, fashionable ideas of an arts and crafts childhood. Her legacy in children's illustration endures today, with one of the most prestigious illustration awards still bearing her name. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Russell Conwell
John Y. Huber Company, 1890. Book is in fair condition for its age. The binding is creaky, with some webbing showing and separation starting to happen at page 258. See photos for details. ACRES OF DIAMONDS (1890) by Russell Conwell Rare early edition Uncommon early printing of one of the first modern American how-to-succeed-in-life inspirational books, as the book proclaims on the title page: "a volume of help and cheer for every person, of either sex, who cherishes the high resolve of GETTING ON IN THE WORLD and SUSTAINING A CAREER OF USEFULNESS AND HONOR." The origins of the book started as an essay that Conwell later expanded into ACRES OF DIAMONDS and lecture on the Chautauqua circuit as early as 1880; he would go on to deliver this lecture more than 6,000 times over course of his lifetime. The book predates Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" and Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by half a century. The first stand-alone edition was published in Kansas City in 1888. Two imprints followed in 1889 and 1890, both from publishers based in Philadelphia, where Rev. Conwell was pastor of the Grace Baptist Church. The K.C. and early Philly editions employed a subtitle beginning with "How Men and Women Can Become Rich," with this example apparently being the first to include the "Every-Day Opportunities" language. The book has been reprinted many times, but all the 1888-1890 printings are exceptionally rare. Let me know if you have any questions. Because of the age of this book, all sales final.

RACKHAM, Arthur
: , 1890. Arthur Rackham's Fünverein - His 'Five Club' RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Saas Fee" [n.d., n.p., ca. 1890]. Original pencil and red crayon drawing, signed "A Rackham/Saas Fee/-- 99" on lower right-hand corner. Image size: 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches: 159 x 95 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. (frame size: 14 5/8 x 11 3/4 inches; 371 x 298 mm.). A pencil and red crayon drawing depicting five women in Swiss costume, three of them standing up straight and two of them leaning forward. "The 1890s was the period in which Rackham travelled in England, Europe and Scandinavia whenever opportunities allowed. His circle of friends had widened by this time to include Frank Keen, Sam Hamer, and the two Andrewes brothers, Herbert and Percy... The five formed themselves into a kind of jolly walking club, which they called the Fünfverein (Five Club). Their English holidays took them to Dartmoor from a base at Kelly College, Tavistock, and European holidays to France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany." (James Hamilton. Arthur Rackham. A Biography. p.41). Saas-Fee is the main village in the Saastal, or the Saas Valley, and is a municipality in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The villages in its neighborhood are Saas-Almagell, Saas-Grund and Saas-Balen.

CAREY, Rosa Nouchette
London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1890. Home Life or Work Life? The Eternal Question for Women The Victorian Answer CAREY, Rosa Nouchette. Lover or Friend? In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1890. First edition. Three octavo volumes (7 1/8 x 4 1/2 in; 180 x 113 mm). [4], 324; [4], 310; [4], 309, [1] pp. Publisher's original half brown cloth over patterned cloth boards. Gilt lettered spines. Publisher's original design gray printed endpapers. Spines very slightly cocked, otherwise fine. OCLC/KVK record only nine copies of the first edition in library holdings worldwide. ABPC has no auction records for any edition of Lover Or Friend? as far back into the past as 1923. A prime example of "safe fiction" for girls of the 19th century, which is to say highly conservative with an emphasis on the domestic duties of women, which take precedence over all other considerations and responsibilities. A very popular novelist in her time but now long forgotten, Rosa Nouchette Carey's ambition was "to try to do good and not harm by my works, and to write books which any mother can give a girl to read" (as cited by Black, Notable Women Authors). As such, the question Lover or Friend? - a suggestive title suggesting more than it delivers - aims at the latter, safely navigating the young female reader away from potential indelicacies to rest ashore a pure land not without its own difficulties, and it is there that the book still speaks to women stepping into the modern world yet fettered to the old, and frustrated. Juggling the roles of wife, mother, and working woman remains as … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOVABLE BOOK; MEGGENDORFER, Lothar
München [Munich]: Verlag von Braun & Schneider, 1890. Rare Meggendorfer Title In Remarkable Condition [MOVABLE BOOK]. MEGGENDORFER, Lothar. Zum Zeitvertreib [Always Jolly] für brave Knaben & Mädchen Ein Ziebilderbuch von Lothar Meggendorfer. München [Munich]: Verlag von Braun & Schneider, n.d. [c. 1890]. Fifth edition of Always Jolly, rare in any edition, rarer still complete and fully functional. Folio (11 7/8 x 9 1/4 in; 303 x 235 mm). Eight hand-finished, chromolithographed plates, each with a movable tab to set the scene in motion. Captions to each scene appear on opposing pages. Original color pictorial boards with original black cloth backstrip. All tabs in working order. Minimal wear to corners, light rivet oxidation offsets. An excellent copy of a Meggendorfer title that is featured in Peter Haining's Moveable Books. "Quite simply, Meggendorfer turned the mechanical toy book into a work of art. He was the supreme master of animation: every gesture, both animal and human, is conveyed with uncanny precision via the primitive but - in his hands - versatile medium of moveable paper parts... I have no doubt that a new generation will share my addictive pleasure in his work" (Maurice Sendak, The Genius of Lothar Meggendorfer. p. 1). "There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s...the mechanisms and operations of Meggendorfer's books--not to mention the originality of his figures--are far superior to any others published before or since....'They we … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Moveable Toybook from Lothar Meggendorfer. Chicago: Thompson & Thomas, [1890]. Folio (12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 308 x 226 mm.). Sixteen unnumbered pages. Six with color lithographed moveable plates and eight with black & white drawings. The movable plates are bright and clean and all in perfect working order. The cat's paintbrush handle has been expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Neat early ink presentation on front paste-down. A spectacular example of this very rare Meggendorfer movable. Publisher's quarter red cloth over glazed boards, front cover with color pictorial design and title. Near fine. A remarkable survival of a very scarce Meggendorfer title. There are six movables with a story text each of which includes sepia drawings. The six movables are: 1. A bulldog, seated in an armchair, having his portrait painted by Mrs. Puss 2. A 'clever' monkey sitting in a big armchair and trying to play with a crying baby in her lap 3. A cat with palette in arm painting a portrait of a poodle 4. RACKHAM, Arthur
[London]: , 1890. An Original Arthur Rackham Pencil Drawing To The Other Side? RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Arriving by Boat" [n.d., n.p., ca. 1890]. Original pencil drawing. Image size: 8 1/2 x 5 inches: 215 x 127 mm. Matted, framed and glazed (frame size: 16 3/8 x 12 3/4 inches; 423 x 323 mm.). In the foreground is a small row boat docked by some steps. One man with a hat and coat on is sitting in the boat and there is a man on the dock holding what might be some fish. One woman is bending down to look at the fish and another woman is climbing the steps. In the background, sketched, are group of people up on the quayside. In our opinion it is quite possible that this pencil drawing was a preparatory sketch for Rackham's first (and rarest) published book: To The Other Side. With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham & Alfred Bryan. London: George Philip & Son, 1893. The text of this book is in the form of a travel brochure, starting with embarkation on the Majestic in Liverpool, sailing to New York, traveling the Eastern seaboard north to Niagara, Boston, Toronto, etc.: then to Chicago: then via St. Paul and Winnipeg to the Pacific, including visits to Yosemite, British Columbia, etc. Rackham's fifteen illustrations, all black-and-white line drawings, were mostly done after photographs (or from other published sources) of Yosemite (two views), San Francisco's Chinatown, Salt Lake City, New York, miners, cowboys, scenes aboard the Majestic, inside a Pullman car, etc., etc. Provenance: from the artist's family. This fine watercolor appears on page 24 of Little Anne. London, 1883. "There was one little Jim, 'Tis reported of him, And must be to his lasting disgrace, That he never was seen With hands at all clean, Nor yet ever clean was his face. His friends were much hurt To see so much dirt, And often they made him quite clean; But all was in vain, He got dirty again, And not at all fit to be seen. It gave him no pain To hear them complain, Nor his own dirty clothes to survey: His indolent mind No pleasure could find In tidy and wholesome array. The idle and bad, Like this little lad, May love dirty ways, to be sure: But good boys are seen To be decent and clean, Although they are ever so poor." "From early 1883 onwards, Ruskin became the most important influence in Kate's life. He wrote to her "My dear Kate... when can you come and see Mountain Spring? Another year, you must come for the snow drops; but it must be a year of bright frost, not black rain... About near fine overall. Light soil to rear board. First leaf detached, but otherwise sound throughout, and clean, with just a bit of wrinkling near glued portraits. Near fine. A carefully assembled and impressively detailed set of photos and bios of contemporary American and British actors, singers, and athletes, about 42 of whom are men, and 23 women. A few of their names include: Mittens Willett, Katie Putnam, Mollie Thompson, Maude Wilson, Hattie Delaro, Captain Jack Crawford, De Wolf Hopper, Frederick Barham Warde, William P. Davidge, Frank Daniels, and Matthew Kilroy. The theatre performers worked in a variety of styles, including vaudeville, opera, and burlesque. Toward the end of the book, the focus shifts to athletes, all of whom are men: many baseball players in the National League, as well as runners, rowers, and a bicyclist. The scrapbook's biographies are quite detailed, some spanning as long as six pages, with information presumably gathered from newspapers; likely also the source of the stars' portraits. An absorbing record compiled by an engaged fan during the embryonic stages of celebrity-focused media in the US.

[S. n., S. d. Possibly Istanbul: circa ], 1890. Large 4°. Green morocco binding with gilt embossed decoration, dark green calf spine, inside white silk paper pastedowns (slightly rubbed and stained, white paper inside with minor foxing, otherwise in a good condition). A highly decorative Ottoman portfolio with initials from the circle or institution of sultan Abdul Hamid II. An elegant Ottoman portfolio, bound in green morocco and richly decorated with gilt tooling, bears a supralibros with Ottoman coat of arms and initials CH, accompanied with a crown. The lettering can be attributed to a royal bookbinder of sultan Abdul Hamid II, whose initials AH on book bindings in red morocco are identical in details to ours. The portfolio possibly belonged not to a person, but to one of the many royal palaces or institutions, founded by Abdul Hamid II. The sultan was known for his generous foundations of numberless libraries and offices, which would have a right to use a royal crown on the book bindings.
