Volume 17, part one of the Transactions of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, Ethnographic section. Original light blue printed wrappers, very mildly foxed. A very good, uncut and unopened copy. The songs of the Taranchi Chinese, the Muslim sedentary population living in oases around the Tarim Basin in today's Xinjiang province of China, with illustrations of their musical instruments. There was a mass emigration of Muslim people from north-western China into the Russian Empire after the failure of the Dungan revolt, 1862-1877. "In accordance with the terms of the Treaty of Saint Petersburg signed in February 1881, which required the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Upper Ili Basin (the Kulja area), the Hui and Taranchi (Uighur) people of the region were allowed to opt for moving to the Russian side of the border. Most chose that option; according to the Russian statistics, 4,682 Hui moved to Russian Empire under the treaty. They migrated in many small groups between 1881-83, settling in the village of Sokuluk some 30 km west of Bishkek, as well as in a number of points between the Chinese border and Sokuluk, in south-eastern Kazakhstan and northern Kyrgyzstan"(Wikipedia). Nikolai Nikolaevich Pantusov, 1849-1909, recorded a number of Taranchi songs in Kullja, during his expedition organised with the help of G.A. BAKER (Sir Samuel White, 1821-1893, Explorer & Sportsman)
Fine Long Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Boyle saying that "nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be of use to you, but in the matter of Stanley's reception at the Albert Hall on 5 May I am afraid that I am as helpless as all others. The Members of the Society are only allowed two tickets, i.e. for the member personally and for one lady. We are going to town 3 May on purpose, ands we shall stay for a few days with our friends the Douglas Murrays ... He is a member, therefore he can take his wife. Up to this moment I have not received my own tickets, and I have written a rather testy letter on the subject this evening the the Chief Clerk of the Society. I do not know whether the Society will make any new arrangements later, but if so, I will let you know, and endeavour to procure you a ticket. It will be one of those formidable crushes which delight English people. You have always been so kind to Agnes that I may confide to you the information that next month is expected to increase the small population at Newera Eliya in Ceylon. It is curious that she is now living in the same spot upon which she was born and if she has a child it will be baptised in the same church as herself, and which we were the first to originate and assist in building ...", 4 sides 8vo., Sandford Orleigh, Newton Abbot, 17th April Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893) was an English explorer, officer, naturalist, big game hunter, engineer, writer and abolitionist. He also held the titles of Pasha and Major-General in the Ottoman Empire and Egypt. He served as the Governor-General of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whistler s account of his sensational libel suit against art critic John Ruskin. Ruskin, at the initial debut at the Grosvenor Gallery, wrote a vicious review that Whistler's now acclaimed oil painting of exploding fireworks at night, Nocturne in Black and Gold The Falling Rocket was "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face." A. B. [Albert Braun] LOEBENSTEIN (1857 – 1907). [Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office], 1893. Lithograph (Mint, pristine condition, with original folds), 76 x 61 cm (24 x 30 inches).
This large map is the most authoritative map of Downtown Honolulu made during the 1890s, a heady period that saw the American backed coup d’état that overthrew the Hawaiian Royal government (1893) and the U.S. annexation of the islands (1898). The map shows all of the city’s streets and hints at its innumerable alleyways, while outlining all of its major buildings including: Alholani Hale (the legislature, built in 1874), the Customs House, Music Hall, the Honolulu Market, the former Royal Palace (occupied until January 1893 by Queen Liliuokalani), Armory, Catholic Church, Post Office, while along the harbor front are the headquarters of several corporations and shipping offices. On the west side of the harbor is the ‘Oahu Railway Land Co. – Railway Wharf’, the seaside terminus of Hawaii’s first railway, a line commenced in 1889, which by this time extended only 18.5 miles. The map also shows that the results of the large land reclamation project forming the Waikahalulu-Esplanade area, the waterfront zone located south of Halekauwila Street. Since the late 1850s, work had been underway to reclaim the area, and the map shows that the work was, by this time, largely complete. The details surrounding the publication of the map are often given incorrectly or left vague. In truth, the map was published tipped in to a rare congressional report entitled U.S. 53rd Congress. 2nd Session. House of Representatives. Execute Document No. 47 (Washington, D.C., December 18, 1893). The repost is considered the be a highly important source on the January 1893 American-backed coup d’état tha … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Palgrave
London: MacMillan. See pictures. Beautiful, but with a little wear. Corners of boards bumped. Edge wear to binding at fore-edges and corners. On close inspection there is a line at the joints, indicating it may have been respined, but it was expertly done, almost imperceptible. Fading and wear to silk endpapers, chip at bottom right corner (.5 cm) of flyleaf. Numerous pencil notes on blank endpaper (binding, etc.). Tipped in letter has lightest foxing. Limitation page has a few very light foxing marks and facing half title page. Dedication page has several small pencil notes at bottom. Handsome wide margins. Occasional binder pencil notes at bottom margins. Rear blank endpapers foxed. Exhibition binding stamp dulled. Despite the notes on condition, it is a beautiful book, very pleasing to see and will add wonderfully to any library. A beautiful exhibition binding of Zaehnsdorf graces this 1890 signed, limited edition of Francis Palgraves venerable Golden Treasury of poetry; with a tipped-in autographed letter, signed (A.L.S.). About the Binding - The small imprint on the rear doublure (silk, in lieu of paper, covering rear board) was Zaehnsdorf's method of delineating their bindings that were displayed at an exhibition. About the Manuscript - A fascinating manuscript letter dated 26 Feb '69, signed, is tipped-in indicating that Palgrave submitted to Punch but may have been unsuccessful (I find no reference to Palgrave in regards to Punch, but it may have been published anonymously). A small pencil note on the letter reads that the letter was given to Shirley Brooks, who i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lemercier, Paris, 1890. [Click Below for Full Description]

MAUPASSANT Guy de;
Paul Ollendorff. [Click Below for Full Description]
