[San Francisco, 1890. 198pp. Original blue cloth, gilt spine. Slight wear at spine ends and corners. Very good. This copy with pasted corrections. Field went to California in 1849 and began a long legal career which led to his appointment by Lincoln to the U.S. Supreme Court. His finding of fraudulence in the will of Senator Sharon as submitted by Sarah Althea Hill and her attorney, David Terry, led to a threat on Justice Field's life by Terry. Eventually, Terry was shot dead by Field's bodyguard. This is one of the few copies with correction slips pasted over some passages, as noted by Howes. HOWES G259. COWAN, p.244.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Hamm, Lillie E.
Eureka, Cala. Daily Humboldt Standard, 1890. 1st separate edition (Cowan p 262; Quebedeaux 15; Rocq 2036). 224, [2] pp. Adverts throughout. The occasional woodcut. 11-1/4" x 8-5/8". Brown cloth spine over printed paper wrapped boards, with the front board depicting the Humboldt County Court House. General wear & extremity rubs. Bit of foxing & age-toning to paper. Withal, a solid VG copy. Item #46663 The compiler of this uncommon Northern California business directory was Lillie Hamm, the proprietor of Eureka Art and Fashion Parlors, which was located at the northwest corner of F & 6th Streets, according to the directory. The first half of the work contains a lengthy history of Humboldt County that includes every small neighborhood & community. Next comes the business directory, which occupies ~ 50 pages, the volume concluding with a section containing biographical sketches of the area's leading businessmen and their firms. There seems to have been quite some pride in the area's anti-Chinese sentiment, with the title page stating in bold that Humboldt is, "The only county in the state with no Chinamen." In 1885, the town of Eureka expelled all of its Chinese residents, sending them by boat to San Francisco, and drafted an anti-Chinese ordinance that was not repealed until 1959. While not particulary scarce institutionally [13 cc, mostly in CA], we do note it infrequently coming to market, finding, at the time of cataloguing, no other copy currently offered, and RBH showing just one copy to auction in the last few decades [2010].

Paul VERLAINE. Jean Richepin. Sonnet autographe non signé. [Paris, 1890 (?)].

FUNCH, Diderik Hansteen.
Dodge, "Bibliography of Danish and Swedish Dictionaries", in: PMLA, 5/4 (1890), pp. 298; Cf. Nielsen, Skibsbygning i Danmark, pp. 139-140; Dansk biografisk lexicon V, pp. 492-493. First edition of a pictorial maritime encyclopaedia and dictionary, written by the famous Danish shipbuilder Diderik Hansteen Funch (1791-1856). The first part describes and illustrates numerous aspects of shipbuilding and rigging, including timber work and framing, knot making and. The second part is a dictionary of terminology used for ship parts and details, as well as for the sailing itself, including the whole typical seamen's vocabulary.Funch was one of the most important builders and designers of warships in Denmark of his time, building both sailing vessels and paddle steamers. "Ships designed according to Funch's system had parabolle waterlines and curves; all the curves were thus mathematically determined. Funch's system seems to have influenced ship design in the provinces from about 1830 to 1845-50" (Nielsen). He described his ideas on shipbuilding in several books for which he also prepared the drawings. With the blind library stamp of 'Det Lergenborgske bibliothek' and two written shelsmarks on the title-page. Binding somewhat worn at the extremities and title label damaged. Foxed throughout and the plates have been browned, but nevertheless a good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Leonard S MABEE
[New York]: 1890. Condition: Near fine. Oblong 24mo. black cloth scrapbook with compiler's intials printed in gilt on cover. Contains [~171] leaves with pasted cut-outs of photos and illustrated portraits of stars, about 65 in total, with orginal typewritten (in blue ribbon, but top copy) biographical information for each. About near fine overall. Light soil to rear board. First leaf detached, but otherwise sound throughout, and clean, with just a bit of wrinkling near glued portraits. A carefully assembled and impressively detailed set of photos and bios of contemporary American and British actors, singers, and athletes, about 42 of whom are men, and 23 women. A few of their names include: Mittens Willett, Katie Putnam, Mollie Thompson, Maude Wilson, Hattie Delaro, Captain Jack Crawford, De Wolf Hopper, Frederick Barham Warde, William P. Davidge, Frank Daniels, and Matthew Kilroy. The theatre performers worked in a variety of styles, including vaudeville, opera, and burlesque. Toward the end of the book, the focus shifts to athletes, all of whom are men: many baseball players in the National League, as well as runners, rowers, and a bicyclist. The scrapbook's biographies are quite detailed, some spanning as long as six pages, with information presumably gathered from newspapers; likely also the source of the stars' portraits. An absorbing record compiled by an engaged fan during the embryonic stages of celebrity-focused media in the US.

Berner Oberland, Switzerland. N.d., circa 1890. The front board is quite elaborate, with a beveled perimeter of a richly painted wood grain. Within is an oblong piece of walnut in the quintessential Black Forest, or in actuality, Swiss Brienzerware, style. By this is meant the delicate foliate relief vignettes which rest on lightly pitted wood. But this frames a light walnut oblong oval with the putti relief that bespeaks more eighteenth century rococo than standard Brienzerware, except that the stones and vegetation at the base are consistent with Brienzerware. The rear board of the album has a pyrographic bouquet such as was practiced by the Swiss carvers later in the nineteenth century. The album, now empty of photos, has 25 thick card leaves, and it is kept closed with a brass clasp. The spine is of brown morocco.

Lafcadio Hearn [Koizumi Yakumo] 1E 1P RARE DUST JKT
Hearn, Lafcadio; [Koizumi Yakumo]Youma: The Story of a West-Indian Slave [in the RARE 19th Century DUST JACKET] New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth with the title label applied to the front board and the title and author label applied to the spine panel (the spine shows some minor sunning, most notably to the spine label due to the dust jacket cut out -- see below, and the boards show some minor corner rubs; multiple pages are unopened, or are only partially opened, on their leading fold, showing the book to have been only partially read -- or possibly entirely unread); in a Very Good + example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNSOPHISTICATED dust jacket -- original to this copy of the book -- with scattered small tears and chips and with the arc over the spine label split on one side and nearly so on the other. The viewer will notice, of course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean until put out for sale. Virtually all of the dust jackets for the book would have been discarded. The viewer also will see that the jacket's spine panel was long ago clipped to reveal the author's last name and the book's title -- a common warehouse practice -- which would have made locating the book on the warehouse shelves easier than otherwise would have been the case. At the time this book was issued, dust jackets were not generally used to help sell the book and thus lacked … [Click Below for Full Description]

AFRICAN AMERICAN BAPTISM
Unknown: Original Photograph, 1890. Condition: Very Good +. 4 1/4 X 6 1/2 Inches. Two original Cabinet Card photographs depicting the baptism of a young Black girl by her Pastor. The scene includes dozens of onlookers and at least one horse and buggy. The two photographs look to have been taken within minutes of each other. Interestingly, the actual photographer must have been deeper out into the water as the shots show the baptism from the rear. It was obviously important to this photographer that he capture the scene and the crowd and not just the girl getting Baptized. Decorative cards with gilt edges. Location is unknown.

N.d., circa 1890s. Sixteenth Edition. With nine ivory tassels or pulls with strings attached, which when pulled out from the fore-edge or side of the box, produce various sounds: a cock crowling, birds chirping, a donkey bray, a bleat, a moo, a coo, etc. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter". See Haining "Movable Books", New English Library, 1979, p. 136. (Note Haining has in illustration a copy of 17th Edition and he dates the book circa 1893.) The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in French, Spanish, and as this copy, in English. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is unquestionably German and Bavarian. With 22 pp of text, including text on FEP (but not counting cover.) Measures 12.25 x 9.25 x 2.5 inches, or 32 x 24 x 6.5 cm. A minor closed tear along lower hinge of several leaves. Age toning to pages, with some light finger soiling in margins. Light wear of gilt on fore-edges. Light rubbing along cloth of spine edge. Not all the sounds are so easily distinguishable, as was probably always the case, but they are all here. Seldom found in completely working order as is this example. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
