… [Click Below for Full Description]

William MORRIS
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1890. Condition: Very good. Large octavo, 387pp., plus 16pp. untitled addendum/epilogue at rear. A very scarce large paper copy, one of 500 examples printed, in the publisher's half white cloth over brown paper boards with gilt decoration. Spine a tinge cocked, spine slightly darkened with a few notable, but forgiveable stains. Corners gently worn, but not bumped or smashed. Overall a bright, clean, tight example, very good. Upon very close inspection, likely at one point a smoker's copy, with neat contemporary woner's name on a front blank. Top edge gilt. Much scarcer than the maroon cloth trade issue - the last attractive copy of this large paper edition we found listed for sale was in a dealer catalogue in the 1980s.

FRIQUEGNON (Jean-Baptiste).
Bel exemplaire.

Library discards in great condition! 9 volumes of Abraham Lincoln, A History published in 1890. Missing volume 4. They are in great condition for their age. The bindings are all good, a tilted spine or two, but very nice books. They are library discards with usual markings. stickers on spine. From Kent Library, Suffield, Conn. There is a book stamp in the front that says they were added to Kent Library Feb 23, 1900. They have some light tanning, and a few chips to page edges. These are from a local collector who once lived in Connecticut in a beautiful estate. She gave these to me to sell for her after she had to down size her home locally. What a great treasure this set is! I flipped through them and they are simply wonderful. We could not find volume 4. It must have gotten lost in the move from Conn. to Mich. Francis Palgrave
London: MacMillan, 1890. See pictures. Beautiful, but with a little wear. Corners of boards bumped. Edge wear to binding at fore-edges and corners. On close inspection there is a line at the joints, indicating it may have been respined, but it was expertly done, almost imperceptible. Fading and wear to silk endpapers, chip at bottom right corner (.5 cm) of flyleaf. Numerous pencil notes on blank endpaper (binding, etc.). Tipped in letter has lightest foxing. Limitation page has a few very light foxing marks and facing half title page. Dedication page has several small pencil notes at bottom. Handsome wide margins. Occasional binder pencil notes at bottom margins. Rear blank endpapers foxed. Exhibition binding stamp dulled. Despite the notes on condition, it is a beautiful book, very pleasing to see and will add wonderfully to any library. A beautiful exhibition binding of Zaehnsdorf graces this 1890 signed, limited edition of Francis Palgraves venerable Golden Treasury of poetry; with a tipped-in autographed letter, signed (A.L.S.). About the Binding - The small imprint on the rear doublure (silk, in lieu of paper, covering rear board) was Zaehnsdorf's method of delineating their bindings that were displayed at an exhibition. About the Manuscript - A fascinating manuscript letter dated 26 Feb '69, signed, is tipped-in indicating that Palgrave submitted to Punch but may have been unsuccessful (I find no reference to Palgrave in regards to Punch, but it may have been published anonymously). A small pencil note on the letter reads that the letter was given to Shirley Brooks, … [Click Below for Full Description]

1890. The blue cloth binding and gilt lettering of this book is fading, due to its age and how much use it has had. The edges are worn, some light staining on the boards. The pages are tanning, as you would expect. The cloth has separated from the spine, however, except for the first two pages, all other pages are attached to the spine. Pages are clean and illustrations are crisp, as shown in photos. The third page has the signature of someone's name. This edition was published by McLoughlin Brothers, Inc. in 1890, with illustrative prints from the original hand drawn Tenniel wood engravings, and pages with orange color borders. Maconachie, James Robert
Delhi Imperial Medical Hall Press, 1890. First edition. 8vo, 25 x 17 cm; pp.xxiv, 308. Punjabi text. Contemporary cloth; edges a little worn, cloth a bit marked Ownership inscription of J.C.W. Eustace, dated 1932; ownership stamp of Sub-Divisional Officer Pind Dadan Khan to title-page and text. A comprehensive collection of 1,089 proverbs, arranged thematically, covering the merits of various soils; the summer and winter rains; the effects of frost and cold, mist and dew; the sun in relation to agriculture; plowing, manuring, sowing, and harvesting; milk and plough cattle; general industry and careful expenditure; relations with moneylenders and with partners and tenants; tribal characteristics, etc. The district(s) in which each proverb was current is also noted. Maconachie saw proverbs as the key to understanding the psyche of the local population. The text was compiled on the basis of returns made by each district officer in the Punjab, with those from Jalandhar and Rawalpindi regarded as the most complete. Some examples: "Starving is a friend, borrowing an enemy"; "Rain may stop, but the interest on a debt will not"; "Crow, moneylender, and dog are never to be trusted though asleep"; "Who has low land, and high relations, he never will suffer loss"; "Manure does the work, or God does"; "A poor man near the head of a canal, is (as good as) a rich man at its tail"; "Laziness and sleep destroy a farmer, as coughing betrays a thief." 1890. 10/17/2016. Good. Quarto measuring 7.5" x 10". Brown leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 204 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 4" x 5" with captions. Good only album lacking part of the spine with worn corners and chips with near fine photographs. A photo album from about 1890 depicting a group of travelers in the western United States. The photos don't appear to be in chronological order and show the group going to Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Tijuana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and California. The album begins on a train platform in Topeka, Kansas with candids of well-dressed travelers waiting for their train and standing by locomotives. Following this they photographed sights along their way including a lighthouse in California, commercial buildings, numerous trains, and grand homes. They also enjoyed the natural beauty of the country including climbing Pike's Peak and visiting the Garden of the Gods in Colorado, beaches of California, and various palms and ferns of the areas as well as photos of the pass fields, mountains, and valleys along the way. Also featured throughout the album are photo of Native Americans seen on their travels. One photo shows an old woman with her dog and is captioned "old Mexican and her dog Santa Monica;" another one reads "an old Indian 125 years old S. Cal." In Mexico they posed behind bars at the "old jail" and photographed young children on a donkey. Many photos show boats off the coast of California and include photos of the coast itself with images of the Cliff house in San Francisco … [Click Below for Full Description]
