WOLF, Hugo 1860-1903
1890. Wolf experienced a great deal during his turbulent life, but was lucky to have a number of supportive friends and colleagues that helped him as much as they were able. In the 1890s, Wolf was coming down from a high point in his career with the success of his Mörike-Lieder and Eichendorff-Lieder. One of his advocates at the time was the conductor Siegfried Ochs (1858-1929), director of the Berlin Philharmonic Choir. In Ochs, "... Wolf found a kindred spirit. Ochs, the greatest choral conductor of the time, was also an extremely entertaining and witty companion, and Wolf much enjoyed his gift of musical parody, even when he found himself the victim of it." Walker: Hugo Wolf, p. 307. Ochs was arranging a concert in Berlin to feature Wolf's orchestral arrangements of his Elfenlied (arr. 1891) and Der Feuerreiter (arr. 1892).In the present letter, Wolf suggests the Gesang (or Ballade) Margits from his incidental music for Ibsen's Das Fest aus Solhaug. Ochs apparently did like the piece as it was included on the January 1894 concert. Although the larger pieces were a success, the shorter works were not, as Wolf reports: "Margit and Anakreons Grab were simply not understood, either by the conductor, by the singers, or by the audience. They were, so to speak, rejected. On the other hand the public went after the Elfenlied like a bear after honey. They didn't know how to contain themselves in their delight." Walker, p. 333. An interesting letter from Wolf to his friend and collaborator Ochs.. On a postal card. Dated Vienna, October 20, 1893. In black ink. In German (w … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Edition, Second Printing. McDermott 1890-4. The First Edition, Second Printing of William James Psychological Masterwork.EDITION: Harvard speculates that the first printing of Psychology had a print run of 1,000 copies but the great rarity of the first printing (characterized most easily by the hyphenated "Psy-chology" opposite the title page) versus this second printing is legendary and somewhat mystifying if, in fact, that many copies of the first printing were actually made. Clearly errors were caught early in the press run and quickly corrected. (see James, Psychology, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1981, p. 1577.)As called for in Harvard's definitive edition, this second printing has the unhyphenated "Psychology" in the book ads opposite the title page. In addition, it also has two corrections to the errors found in the first printing: "not the sole seat of intellect" rather than "the seat of intellectual power" (Vol. 1, p. 10, l. 9-10) and "object of some absent sensation" rather than "object of some absent object of sensation" (Vol. 2, p. 101, l. 20). THE BOOK: William James was an original thinker in and between the disciplines of physiology, psychology and philosophy. While more widely known as the proponent of "pragm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Decorated Cloth. Very Good. N.d., circa 1890. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. Sixteen mounted watercolors. The best watercolors here have an impressionistic panache, and generally they show evidence of a deft brush. The painter, whom we would guess was English, traveled to Virginia and the American Southwest. The American views include Washington from the Potomac, a Virginia farmhouse, "Negro" shanty dwellings near Washington, Washington's home in Mount Vernon, the San Miguel Mission in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a bell at this mission, "Mexican" houses in Santa Fe, and Glorieta, which appears to be a typical village of the wild west, a western ranch house on a hill. Other paintings include a house in Mayfield, Sussex, and its dining room, a young man in full chaps, sailboats, Battersea Bridge in London, an old church in Mayfield, and hills by Braemar. The album has had several of its paintings removed. We know this because the underlying leaf remains with the old caption. Condition otherwise: moderate, to heavy, wear, of the Arts and Crafts style binding. Some rubbing to its surface, and bumping of its corners. The underlying leaves within are heavily age toned and brittle from their acidity.

Feininger, Lyonel, Maler (1871-1956).

Field, Michael; [Bradley, Katherine]; [Cooper, Edith]; Image, Selwyn (designer); [Stuart, Mary, Queen of Scots]
London: George Bell and Sons, 1890. First edition of this Victorian verse drama about Mary, Queen of Scots, co-written by the lesbian couple Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper, who published under the penname Michael Field for four decades. Their pseudonymous authorship was a loosely held secret among literary friends like Robert Browning and Oscar Wilde. The ambiguous figure of Mary Stuart fascinated the Victorians, as evidenced in Walter Pater's "Essay on Rossetti," which inspired the title of the play: "Old Scotch history, perhaps beyond any other, is strong in the matter of heroic and vehement hatreds and love, the tragic Mary herself being but the perfect blossom of them." The Tragic Mary dramatizes the tumultuous years of 1566 and 1567, when Mary's first husband Lord Darnley was murdered and his alleged killer, the Earl of Bothwell, abducted and married her. Field explores the tension between the queen's vulnerability and authority, as when Mary asks her abusive captor: "Have you thought what utter hatred would be like in me? . . . Have you beheld the vision? Very soon it will be actual, and face to face." Focused on the world of the queen and her woman servants, the play is of particular note for its undertones of same-sex desire; the scholar Jayne Lewis calls it "a fable of lesbian longing" (Mary Queen of Scots: Romance and Nation.) The Tragic Mary features a celebrated design by Selwyn Image, one of the founders of the Century Guild of Artists, now seen as a key forerunner of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau. Photo dates circa 1890 and shows the solitary grave, with Custer Hill in the far distance in the top left hand corner of the photo. Mount measures 10" x 7". John Jordan Crittenden III (June 5, 1854 - June 25, 1876) was an officer in the United States Army and a member of the Crittenden family, who were prominent in political and military circles throughout the 19th century. He was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn in the Montana Territory while on temporary assignment in the 7th U.S. Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. He was a son of Thomas Leonidas Crittenden, a Union Army general during the American Civil War and his wife Catherine Todd. He was a grandson and namesake of former Kentucky U.S. Senator John J. Crittenden and the great-grandson of Virginia politician John Crittenden, Sr. Young Crittenden received an appointment to the United States Military Academy in 1873, but failed to graduate, leaving school in 1875. He petitioned President Ulysses S. Grant for a commission and in the autumn of that year was assigned as a second lieutenant in the 20th U.S. Infantry. Before the Little Big Horn campaign the following year, Crittenden was temporarily assigned to Company L of the 7th Cavalry, serving under Lieutenant James Calhoun. Shortly after his 22nd birthday, he was killed during the Battle of Little Big Horn. His body was identified by a prosthetic glass eye from an earlier injury when a shotgun accidentally discharged in his face. At the specific request of his family, Crittenden was initially buried with his men on what became known as "Calhoun Hill … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin: August Hirschwald, 1890. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (241 x 148 mm). 15 [1] pp. Original publisher's printed wrappers, stapled as issued (fore-edge with rather crude scissor opening cut, crayon underlining of author's name and further crayon note at top margin, light dust-soiling, shelf-mark stamp). Text little age-toned only. A very good, unsophisticated copy. ---- FIRST EDITION of Koch's important conference paper, rare in the original wrappers. At the tenth International Medical Congress at Berlin in 1890, Koch, in a keynote lecture, announced his belief that he had found a remedy for tuberculosis. On March 24, 1882 Robert Koch announced the discovery of the tuberculosis pathogen - his lecture on the "etiology of tuberculosis" made him famous over night. Tuberculosis had developed into a widespread disease in the course of the 19th century. About a seventh of the German population died at that time of the so-called white plague. Cause and distribution of the disease were unclear. Koch showed that tuberculosis is triggered by tubercle bacilli. In order to be able to detect these, special nutrient media, new culture conditions and specific staining techniques were necessary. Beside cholera, tuberculosis remained a major research topic in Koch's life. He looked for ways to curb or prevent infectious diseases specifically from the outset. However, his desire to find a therapeutic or even an anti-tuberculosis vaccine was not fulfilled. The remedy developed by him "tuberculin" - a mixture of components of devitalized tubercle bacilli, which K … [Click Below for Full Description]

1890. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr George Bois, Les Damnées. Paris, Dentu, 1890. In-8, 158p.

1890. Late 19th century educational tool for teaching children the four basic rules of arithmetic, devised by Father Charier, former student of the École Supérieure et Industrielle de la ville de Metz, formed as two octagonal stiff cardboard disks joined at the center, the top disk divided into four sections, one each for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, each section with two cut-out windows revealing the disk below, and illustrated with images of children doing math, with one small wooden handle for ease of rotating the disk, the bottom disk of red stiff cardboard and printed with numbers. Instructions for usage of the disk are printed to the underside. Some very minor soiling, small areas of edgewear to paper on top disk, overall very good condition. Approx. 15 inches wide. Loose as issued. La Flèche, France (Charier-Beulay) n.d. (circa 1890s). This item functions as follows: the large cut-out window in each section corresponds to the calculation operation being performed, and can display numbers from 1 through 10. Above each of these windows is printed a bar with numbers from 1 through 10. The child chooses the number to display in the large window and aligns it with one of the numbers printed on the bar on the top disk. The result will appear in the small cut-out window at the top of the section. (For example, having the digit "4" show up in the large Multiplication window and align with the "5" on the printed bar will result in "20" showing up in the small window, to make 4x5=20.) (frame size 58 by 43 cm., 22 ¾ by 17 in.) Claud Lovat Fraser was born in London and educated at Charterhouse. Initially intending to join the family firm of solicitors he gave up his legal studies in order to attend the Westminster School of Art. His love of literature and theatre led him to concentrate his artistic output on theatrical design and highly original book illustrations and publications. His passion for the work of Jacobean and eighteenth century playwrights was encouraged by his friends Edward Gordon Craig and Herbert Beerbohm Tree who also introduced him to the world of theatrical costume and set design. In late 1914, despite a history of frail health, Fraser enlisted with the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps and was commissioned to the 14th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. His wartime sketchbooks (many now in the Bryn Mawr College Library, Pennsylvania, USA) and the drawings he included in his correspondence provide an intimate visual record of the trenches and battlefields of Flanders in this early phase of the war. He was one of few British officers to survive the battle of Loos (September 25-October 8, 1915) and in December 1915 his battalion was the first to withstand a German gas attack.
