Kmoch, Karel M. and Johann Karresch, illustrator]
[Prague]: Pra?ský soukromý ústav pro vzd lání hluchon mých, [ca. 1890]. Contemporary green card boards; 130 pp. of lithographed illustrations. Boards worn; hinges somewhat weak; internally very good. [Czech Bible for Deaf Mutes]. A very uncommon edition for deaf-mutes, which presents the Old and New Testament on 130 pages of black-and-white "stick figure" drawings and iconograms, with occasional symbolic elements. The work was published by the Prague Private Institution for the Education of Deaf-Mutes, and the drawings were executed by Johann Karresch, a teacher at the school. Also included are several drawn maps. The editor was Karel M. Kmoch (1839-1913), a Czech priest who focused on caring for the deaf-mutes. The Catholic Church played a key role in caring for the deaf in Bohemia, founding three institutes and contributing to the development of several others. The first steps toward such a primer were taken by Václav Frost (1814-1865), a Czech and Austrian priest who helped found the Institute, the fifth of its kind in Europe. After Frost's early death, Kmoch continued to systematize his work into the present book. The Czech institutes continued to use sign language, in spite of the fact that following the Milan Congress the German school dominated almost everywhere (tactile language). We are unable to trace this work in KVK or OCLC. A copy is held by the Czech National Library.$2650. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

George Sims - The Case of George Candlemas - 1890 UK first edition published by Chatto & Windus. Not one but two copies, the first in the publisher's cloth, inscribed to the title page by Sims in the year of publication and the second a very uncommon Victorian paperback issue with illustrated front panel. The first copy is reasonably firmly bound in blue/grey cloth lettered and decorated in red and black, the boards are somewhat bumped, faded and rubbed with minor marking, the text block is toned and dusty with minor spotting. The softcover edition is bound in the original wraps, which are slightly toned and foxed with minor loss to the edges, reasonably well executed repairs to the spine and some staining. The text block is slightly toned, foxed and stained with two small bookplates to the inside front cover. A highly amusing crime caper, or rather a detective caper, the detective being of the amateur and aristocratic variety, with the twist that in physical appearance he greatly resembles the murderer. Sims writing is always entertaining but at crime writing he excelled, unsurprisingly given the interest that he showed in real cases. Most notably the Whitechapel Murders, in which he was an expert and in 1888 he even briefly suspected to be Jack the Ripper himself, perhaps inspiring his use of a similar device in this little novel published shortly afterwards. Uncommon as a first edition in any form, but to find both a cloth and a paperback copy, one being inscribed, is remarkable. [Attributes: First Edition]

William Morris
Roberts Brothers. Very Good. Item #5564 Boston: Robert Brothers, 1890. Limited Edition. Large Octavo. 378 pages plus 16 pages of untitled addendum and epilogue. Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Scarce large paper copy, one of 500 copies printed. Publisher's white cloth over brown paper boards with gilt decoration to spine and front. Top edge gilt; decorative floral endpapers. Spine slightly darkened with a few forgivable stains. Edges gently rubbed and corners lightly worn.An early modern fantasy novel, Morris would develop many of these themes in his later work, The Roots of the Mountains and The Wood Beyond the World. J.R.R. Tolkien cited The House of the Wolfings as an influence on the Lord of the Rings, and parallels can be seen in each author's use of Old English place names, aversion to mechanization, and portrayal of the hero.A bright and tight copy of an important work of which Oscar Wilde said in his review, "In days of uncouth realism and unimaginative imitation, it is a high pleasure to welcome a work of this kind. It is a work in which all lovers of literature cannot fail to delight.".

On an album leaf 149 x 111 mm. Slightly worn and browned; creased at folds. "Humperdinck became engaged to Hedwig Taxer at Christmas 1890 and presented her with the Singspiel version of Hänsel und Gretel as an engagement present. In January 1891 he started orchestrating it and began to consider turning it into a full-scale opera. From June to August he was occupied at Bayreuth both as a critic for the Frankfurter Zeitung and as a backstage helper for opera production. In December Humperdinck presented Hedwig with the draft of the full version of Hänsel und Gretel as a Christmas present..." "On 19 May he and Hedwig were married and spent the summer at the Bayreuth festival. Humperdinck's duties as a teacher and critic, his marriage and fatherhood (his first child, Wolfram, was born on 29 April 1893), delayed the completion of the final version of Hänsel und Gretel until 17 September 1893. The first performance was given in Weimar on 23 December under Richard Strauss; its success was immediate and spread throughout Europe. Mahler, whom Humperdinck met in Weimar on 1 June 1894, gave the first performance in Hamburg on 25 September. Further performances of significance were under Felix Weingartner on 13 October in Berlin in the presence of the Kaiser and his wife, who granted Humperdinck an audience; on 30 November in Dessau, directed by Cosima Wagner; and on 18 December in Vienna, attended by Humperdinck, Br … [Click Below for Full Description]

1890. [Prague]: Pražský soukromý ústav pro vzd lání hluchon mých, [ca. Charles Dickens
1890. For sale is a rare piece of Dickensiana indeed; this being one of only 250 produced for sale in the U.K., 1890. A facsimile of the original manuscript by Dickens. Complete. It boasts rather interesting provenance, bearing the gift plate of members of The Dickens Dining Club, a group of academics who met annually to discuss the works of Dickens, and conduct lectures on the author. This volume was given to the Reverend Charles Clark. Clark was born in London and entered the Baptist College at Nottingham as a student for the ministry. After filling several charges in London and the provinces, he accepted the pastorate of the Baptist Church in Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria, where he arrived in April 1869. Having been very successful as an amateur lecturer on secular subjects, Clark resigned his pastoral charge in 1874, and lectured professionally throughout the Australian colonies with extraordinary success. Bound in the publisher's original vellum, over paper-covered hard boards. The title in gilt to the spine, and also to the upper board. Original endpapers and all page edges uncut. Externally it is in good order; marking to the vellum, but the hinges remain firm. The boards have the predictable extraneous wear, but this does not detract greatly from its handsome appeal. Internally, it is broadly bright, with only sporadic browning to some of the leaves, and occasional thumbing to the margins. Overall, this is indeed a most rare piece of Dickensiana, and certainly one for the collector. It is both important and complete, and would add greatly to any collection.

Gaulle, Charles de (1890-1970)
Gaulle, Charles de (1890-1970) - Autograph letter signed "mourns his daughter with Down syndrome" - French general and statesman who led the Free French Forces during World War II. He later founded the French Fifth Republic in 1958 and served as its first president from 1959 to 1969. Autograph letter signed "C. de Gaulle". 1p., 5.25 x 8.25 inch, on his embossed "LE GENERAL DE GAULLE" stationery, n.p., 1948 February 12. In French, translated: "Your sympathy in my great mourning was expressed in a manner that has deeply touched me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am always, my dear Master, yours faithfully." Charles de Gaulle had three children: Philippe (born 1921), Élisabeth (1924 2013) and Anne (1928 1948). Anne had Down syndrome and died of pneumonia at the age of 20 on February 6, 1948. De Gaulle always had a particular love for Anne; one Colombey resident recalled how he used to walk with her hand-in-hand around the property, caressing her and talking quietly about the things she understood. Mailing fold, minor corner wear, else fine condition. COMES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY BY ANDREAS WIEMER HISTORICAL AUTOGRAPHS. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Lafcadio Hearn [Koizumi Yakumo] 1E 1P RARE DJ
1890. Hearn, Lafcadio; [Koizumi Yakumo] Youma: The Story of a West-Indian Slave [in the RARE 19thCentury DUST JACKET] New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth with the title label applied to the front board and the title and author label applied to the spine panel (the spine shows some minor sunning, most notably to the spine label due to the dust jacket cut out -- see below, and the boards show some minor corner rubs; multiple pages are unopened, or are only partially opened, on their leading fold, showing the book to have been only partially read -- or possibly entirely unread); in a Very Good + example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNSOPHISTICATED dust jacket -- original to this copy of the book -- with scattered small tears and chips and with the arc over the spine label split on one side and nearly so on the other. The viewer will notice, of course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean until put out for sale. Virtually all of the dust jackets for the book would have been discarded. The viewer also will see that the jacket's spine panel was long ago clipped to reveal the author's last name and the book's title -- a common warehouse practice -- which would have made locating the book on the warehouse shelves easier than otherwise would have been the case. At the time this book was issued, dust jackets were not generally used to help sell the book and thus l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pasternak, Boris
Russian poet, novelist and literary translator (1890-1960), Nobel Prize in Literature in 1958, after his novel Doctor Zhivago was published outside Russia due to a government ban. Signed carbon copy of 10 poems, later published in Doctor Zhivago (1957), 20 pages (rectos only), original tan wrappers, size is 6.75 x 9 inches. Inscribed to Iuri Aleksandrovich Afanasiev, a leading reformist intellectual appointed rector of the State History and Archives Institute in 1986. Afanasiev has used his position to shed a more factual light on Stalin´s purges and crimes. Warmly inscribed on the first blank page: "To dear Iuri Aleksandrovich for good memory in wishing a speedy settling of your home life Pasternak 8 March 1948." This signed typescript comprises ten of the 25 "Lara" poems in Pasternak's Nobel Prize winning novel Doctor Zhivago (1957). Pasternak was one of Russia's greatest poets when he conceived his epic tale of the Soviet Union. He worked on the novel for many years (the earliest passages date from the 1910s) and composed the poetry at various intervals during its gestation. For example, "Gamlet" [Hamlet] was written in 1946 while Pasternak was working on his celebrated translation of Shakespeare's drama. The date of the composition of "Vesennyaya rasputitsa" [Spring Thaw] has been given as 1953, but the typed copy of the poem included in this 1948 manuscript compilation proves that it was apparently written with the other poems in 1946 and 1947. Pasternak published "Stikhi iz romana v proze 'Doktor Zhivago'" in Znamia (no. 4, 1954, pp 92-95) prior to their appearance … [Click Below for Full Description]

Attractively matted and framed with a cabinet card photograph of Whittier, by Notman of Boston. One page, in purple ink recto of blank sheet. 1 vols. 8 x 6-1/4 inches. "It might have been ... " Whittier quotes the famous last five couplets from his poem "Maud Muller": "Alas for maiden, alas for judge, For rich repiner and household drudge! God pity them both ! and pity us all, Who vainly the dreams of youth recall; For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!' Ah, well ! for us all some sweet hope lies Deeply buried from human eyes; And, in the hereafter, angels may Roll the stone from its grave away!" (As parodied by Bret Harte: "If, of all words of tongue and pen, The saddest are, 'It might have been,' More sad are these we daily see: 'It is, but hadn't ought to be.'").

Beaumont, Germaine (1890-1983)
1890. Written from France to her close friend in America, Jeanne Silvain, who was an actress and friendly with many literary figures. Beaumont (1890-1993) was a novelist and literary figure, very friendly with Colette, inspired and influenced by Virginia Woolf, whom she translated and by mystery novels - Colette said of her names that they were 'romans policiers sans policiers.' She was the first female winner of the Renaudot Prize, second only to the Prix Goncourt in literary significance. An active feminist, she was one of the founders of the Femina Prize, created in response to the misogynous Goncourt Prize, and awarded by an all-female jury to an outstanding work of literature (not necessarily by a woman). The letters, written on an average of once a week, take up 396 sheets written on both sides and cover all subjects: family, love, literature and drama, life in France, literary gossip, etc., biographical details, assessments of friends, shared memories. The first is dated July 31, 1968, the last January 14, 1977. Loosely kept, but Silvain has numbered the sheets from 1 to 396. Very Good.
