Harper's Bazaar 1890. FULL YEAR BOUND VOLUME.

New York. Harper Brothers. 1890. VOLUME 23. Massive volume; three-quarter leather binding 16 x 11 inches; 1052 pp. Fifty-two lavishly illustrated issues; 32 featuring a Supplement. Of great interest are the 24 tipped-in folded patterns for clothing: women's garments, young girls' garments; dolls' costumes, etc. These are bound into the volume, and all are in very good condition. Copious illustrations of women's and young girls' clothing are featured in the newspaper; these include tennis blouses, formal evening wear, riding habits, gowns for various occasions including weddings; also shawls, hats, embroidery patterns and more. Several newspapers have short marginal tears (repaired with archival tape); one cover was soiled in the mail. Abrasions to exterior: spine edges and corners of covers; overall very good condition. ITEM WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 20 LBS: WE WILL QUOTE EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES. The rear page of each issue of the newspaper features captioned cartoon images (6 x 4.5 inches or so); many of these depict African-American characters whose verbal exchanges are rendered in dialect. There are other cartoons featuring Chinese characters. The newspaper's extensive single and double-page illustrations focus on costumes of the day, but others reflect wider-ranging interests. These include a bird's eye view of Rome, bicycling, the deck of an Iron Clad (ship) photographed from the mast of another vessel, art work by various artists including Alice Barber (Stevens) whose Harmony in a Virginia Cabin depicts an African-American family, a full-page illustration depicting a female photographer, illustrations of theatrical interest, etc. Loads of full-page illustrations of British royalty and English historical subjects make clear the Anglophile leanings of the publisher and no doubt the bulk of the newspaper's readers. A small mailing label on the front cover of the newspaper identifies the subscriber to the publication as Jacob Kamm of Portland Oregon. Kamm, a prominent businessman in 19th century Portland, founded the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and was heavily involved in real estate in the city. His estate was valued at over four million dollars at the time of his death in 1912. The volume is in very good condition, tight and attractive in its binding. Uncommon in such good condition.

Privately assembled album of natural history drawings and lithographs from the library of the natural historian Francis Day.

Kenilworth House, Cheltenham: circa, 1890. Quarto, a privately assembled album of 123 engraved and lithographic plates of which 23 are skilfully hand-coloured, front pastedown endpaper with label of the Day family bequest to the Cheltenham Public Library; a very good copy indeed in later nineteenth-century half calf. A remarkable volume of 123 natural history illustrations, many unpublished, from the personal collection of the ichthyologist Francis Day (1829-1889) with his working notes on many of the images. Most of the images are proofs before letters, and in the absence of descriptive text it would require a good deal of further research and specialist knowledge to accurately identify all of the species; however, given Day's interest in the subcontinent and the Indian Ocean, no doubt many are from the region. Several of the ornithological proofs are signed by the accomplished engraver Charlotte Gray (daughter of the respected conchologist Maria Emma Gray and step-daughter of prolific naturalist John Edward Gray, the zoological keeper at the British Museum who worked with Charles Darwin and many others). The album reflects the wide interests of Day, appointed as Inspector-General of Fisheries in India and Burma in the mid-Victorian era, who was widely respected as for his knowledge of the natural history of the subcontinent. The album includes mammals, quadrupeds both familiar and exotic, birds, fish, insects, crabs, arachnids and insects. Of special interest are highly detailed lithographs detailing the highly unusual nests built by tropical birds. Significantly, a good number of the plates in the collection are by the eminent London based natural history publisher Treuttel, Wurtz and Company. Some of the plates are published as early as 1822, but Day evidently used them as the basis for his own observations, with frequent annotations in his hand regarding habitat and differences between specimens, making this an interesting working archive. The plates include five magnificent lithographs of Australian birds, some of which are beautifully hand-coloured. The Australian ornithology plates comprise a magnificent raptor (here captioned the 'Australian Fishing Eagle') followed by three magnificent hand-coloured lithographs illustrating an Australian owl, a frogmouth and a brush-turkey. Also hand-coloured in warm coppery tones is the unfortunately named Troglodyte Beach Rail, a native waterbird of New Zealand. In this collection both the brush-turkey and Troglodyte Beach Rail are included in duplicate (as coloured and uncoloured plates). The Australian lithographs were produced for the Transactions of the Linnean Society, but some are certainly Day's own proofs of the published images (were these plates in fact ever published?).A ticket on the front paste-down notes that this album was presented to the then Cheltenham Public Library by the "Misses Day, as a memorial of their late father". A full listing of the contents of the album is available upon request. Expertly rebacked.

        Les chants de Maldoror

Rare second edition in trade, and the first French edition, one of 150 unnumbered copies on vellum, one draw with 10 japan. First edition of the famous preface Genonceaux on Lautréamont, frontispiece Jose Roy (regular cartoonist licentious works) showing a flayed skin to earth, wandering in the catacombs, a facsimile of a letter from the author 1870 . Bound in half blue calico, smooth back with a gold finial, date tail piece red morocco emphasized double nets, blue marbled paper on the boards, elegant binding pastiche signed Laurenchet. The original 1869 was never published by Lacroix, who had pledged to edit; only ten copies were stapled and delivered to the author. In 1874 another Belgian publisher, Rozez, resumed the background and edited with a title page relays. The title glory Genonceaux was without doubt have edited the Chants de Maldoror, with a real desire to make it known. After editing, he published several excerpts in newspapers: Fin de siècle (14 February 1891) and The Black Cat (12 December 1891). His preface is the result of a serious investigation, which is why it violently rejects allegations of Léon Bloy on the author. Genonceaux providing a charge of indecency, which actually took place in 1892, leaving his publishing house after editing Shrine of Rimbaud. Literature vertigo at the limit of sustainable, the excessive teenager, a total darkness, the Chants de Maldoror, or the saga of a wandering figure of evil in the world, became famous surrealist who made a true aesthetic manifesto. Few pale scattered spots on a very white paper, otherwise very good copy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Artistic Pussy and Her Studio

London: H. Grevel & Co.,, 1890 - A Very Scarce Meggendorfer Movable[MOVABLE BOOK]. MEGGENDORFER, Lothar. Artistic Pussy and Her Studio. Moving Pictures with Other Tales. A Moveable Toybook from Lothar Meggendorfer. London: H. Grevel & Co., [1890]. Folio (11 7/8 x 8 3/4 inches; 302 x 222 mm.). Sixteen unnumbered pages. Six with color lithographed moveable plates and eight with black & white drawings. The movable plates are bright and clean and all in perfect working order. Three of them have very small and neatly repaired tears just on the lower margins by the pull-tabs. Otherwise a near fine example of this very rare Meggendorfer movable. With the engraved bookplate of Joan Feisenberger on the front paste-down.Publisher's quarter red cloth over glazed boards, front cover with color pictorial design and title. Inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired, some light rubbing to corners of boards, otherwise near fine.A remarkable survival of a very scarce Meggendorfer title. There are eight movables with a story text each of which includes sepia drawings. The six movables are:1. A bulldog, seated in an armchair, having his portrait painted by Mrs. Puss2. A 'clever' monkey sitting in a big armchair and trying to play with a crying baby in her lap3. A cat with palette in arm painting a portrait of a poodle4. A wily fox running away with two geese under his arms5. A mother hen gently rocks two of her baby chicks in a cradle while the four other chicks peck around. 6. Mr. and Mrs. Hare hiding in a cabbage patch from a houndOCLC locates just one copy of the London imprint in libraries and institutions worldwide: Library of Congress (DC). and three copies of the American imprint by Thompson & Thomas, Chicago: Smithsonian Institution, (DC); Boston University (MA); Pennsylvania University (PA)."There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s?the mechanisms and operations of Meggendorfer's books-not to mention the originality of his figures-are far superior to any others published before or since.?'They were marvels of ingenuity?Usually several movements took place at the same time on the same page' (Eric Quayle)? The devices that operated the various figures in Meggendorfer's books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion?Needless to say, such was the delicacy of Meggendorfer's machinery that if a child pulled too hard the whole thing could be ruined beyond repair" (Haining, Movable Books, pp. 65-73).Joan Feisenberger (née) Greendall (d. 1992) was the wife of the great bibliophile and rare book expert of Sotheby's fame, Hellmut Albert Feisenberger (1909-1999) - "Feisy" to all who knew him. He was responsible for the preparation of the the exhibition "Printing and the Mind of Man" at Earls Court in 1963. As a member of the historical sub-committee whose task was to select some 500 books that had most influenced human thought and action over 500 years, he undertook all the scientific books, ranging from the great medieval encyclopaedia of St. Isidore of Seville to Fermi and Pontecorvo's patent for controlling nuclear fission. In all, he helped to choose and then catalogued over 120 books, more than any other contributor. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Picture of Dorian Gray [within Four Complete Novels by Famous Authors from Lippincott's Monthly Magazine].

London: Ward, Lock, Bowden and Company, n.d. [c.1890]. FIRST PRINTING of the complete novel. The sheets of the magazine were printed in America and issued simultaneously in USA by Lippincott and in London by Ward, Lock. These monthly magazines contained a complete novel in each issue and many went unsold; the remaining sheets were then bound up as the collections 'Six Complete Novels' or 'Four Complete Novels from Lippincott's Monthly Magazine'. The present copy was bound after August 1891, due to the imprint on the general title. The bibliography concedes 'the contents of these bound volumes are not always identical, the selection of monthly parts varying considerably. Dorian Gray is always placed first in the volume' (Mason 81c). Conan Doyle's The Sign of Four also appeared in the magazine around this time and his bibliographers expand upon the publisher's commercial approach to anthologizing; 'this was an attempt to dispose of the large number of early issues by including the short novels by Oscar Wilde or Rudyard Kipling' (Green and Gibson pp.37-8). Large octavo, pp.578. Publisher's light blue cloth blocked in red and gilt, coated yellow endpapers. The binding is mis-titled 'Four Complete Stories' emphasising the cavalier attitude towards the publication. Contents clean, edges toned, some 'stepping' to sections where bound from the parts, binding rubbed and edgeworn. A used but serviceable copy of the EARLIEST SHEETS of the novel, albeit bound later than the book-form edition. Most uncommon. Mason [81-82, 332]. Listed in The Observer's All-Time 100 Best Novels [2003].

Memoir of William Watts McNair, Late of the "Connaught House," Mussooree, of the Indian Survey Department, the First European Explorer of Kafiristan

London: D. J. Keymer & Co., 1890 83 pp with 2 B&W photo illustrations. Dedication on title page dated January 28th, 1892 by J.E. Howard to a lady friend from the United States. Text is clean and tight, endpapers glue-stained., bookseller's sticker on front endpapers. White cloth boards with gold-stamped titles are rubbed at extremities with some loss of material small split at top of spine, 1 original tissue protecting photo of McNair and two locals in oriental costume is detached. McNAIR, WILLIAM WATTS (1849?1889), traveller, was born 13 Sept. 1849. He joined the Indian survey department 1 Sept. 1867. His first twelve veers of service were passed with the Rajputana and Mysore topographical parties, and under Majors Strahan and Thullier he learned surveying thoroughly. In the autumn of 1879 he was selected to accompany the Khyber column of the Afghan field force, and was present during the fighting before Cabul and the defence of Sharpur in 1879?80. While in Afghanistan he made valuable maps, exploring the Lughman Valley and the route to Kafristan; and he was the first officer to traverse by the same valley the route from Cabul to Jalalabad. South of Cabul he penetrated to the Logar and Wardak valleys. After the war he was engaged in the Kohat survey under Major Holdich, tracing the frontier line from Kohat to Bannu, and, across the border, surveying part of the valley of the Tochi, and mapping some of the Khost district. He was soon transferred to one of the Beluchistan parties, and passed the remainder of life in surveying in that district; his main work was to carry a series of triangles from the Indus at Dehra Gazi Khan, near the thirtieth parallel, to Quetta. In 1883, hearing that a native explorer was about to visit Kafristan, he volunteered to accompany him disguised as a hakim, or native doctor. He obtained a year's leave, and the party crossed the frontier 13 April. They passed through the Dir country, and came by the Kotal Pass, at an elevation of 10,450 feet, to Ashreth, and thence to Chitral. He had intended to go northwards, by the Hindu Kush valleys, but after reaching the Dora Pass, and making observations in the Chitral district, he was compelled to return, owing to his identity having been disclosed by a native, Kafristan being very strictly secluded from Europeans. On his return he was officially reprimanded by the viceroy for crossing the frontier without permission. He read an account of his expedition before the Royal Geographical Society in London on 10 Dec. 1883, and was awarded the Murchison grant. He continued his survey work, but was in 1889 attacked by fever at Quetta, and moved to Mussooree, where he died 13 Aug. 1889. This book was edited and published posthumerously. . By Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good. 7" x 6".

        Souvenir de Constantinople. (= Einbd.tit.).

`P. Sébah` gezeichnet, die übrigen sind nicht signiert. - Die Aufnahmen zeigen Typen, Straßenszenen und Bauwerke. - DIESES OBJEKT UNTERLIEGT DER DIFFERENZBESTEUERUNG.       NY: Ruder Photographer, 1890. Original photograph, 5-3/4 x 4-3/8 inches, mounted on grey board, 8 x 12 inches, within triple rules, some sunning to top inch of board on which photo is mounted, lacking tissue guard was was previously affixed, photograph is fine. This is a handsome image of the pianist and composer, seated on a rocker on a proch most likely in the country, reading a book. The tree outside the porch and the light colored and light-weight dress indicates summer. Amy Beach (1867-1944), composer and pianist , showed her musical precocity early on; by four, she was composing waltzes. her mother, a talented singer and pianist, undertook her daughter's first musical education; later she studied Ernst Perebo, Junius W. Hill and Carl Baermann. During the winter of 1881-1882, Hill taught her harmony, 'the only formal instruction in music theory she ever received. l[NAW] At the age of 16, she debuted with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a pianist and, finding favor with critics and public alike, continued to give recitals. Her marriage in 1885 to Dr. H.H.A. Beach, a distinquished surgeon and colleague of Dr. Oliver Wendell olmes, considerable altered the course of her career. her husband appreciated and supported her music but disliked her performing in public. With his encouragement she focusted on composing, teaching herself the priciples of musical composition. Her Mass in E Flat major for vocal quarter, chorus, orchestra and organ, was first performed in 1892 by the Handel and Haydn Society with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It was the "first work by a woman performed by this oldest and most conservative of American choral organizations." [NAW] remarkable for any composer, all but three of her 150 works were published. She also sought to encourage other woman in music, founding in 1926 and serving as first President, the Association of American Women Composers. [THE BOOK OF WMEN'S FIRSTS] Highly regarded throughout her career, Beach's music fell into oblivion after her death; new recordings in the 1970's reawakened interest in this fine composer and musician.         Hedda Gabler. [Skuespil i fire akter]

Glydendalske Boghandels Forlag (F. Hegel & Son), København [Copenhagen] 1890 - First Printing of perhaps Ibsen's "most frequently performed play in the modern theatre." (PMM) In Danish (then the literary language of both Denmark and Norway). Small 8vo: [4],236pp. Publisher's green cloth (copies were also identically bound in red, brown, and grey, no known priority), front cover elaborately blocked in gilt and black, back board with blind-stamped borders and central publisher's logo, floral patterned endpapers, gilt edges. A brilliant copy, barely rubbed to spine ends. PMM 375. First trade edition, preceded by twelve copies printed in London, in Norwegian, "under a well-intentioned illusion that this was necessary for copyright protection." (PMM) Published on December 16, 1890, although the play only premiered on January 31, 1891, at the Königliches Residenz-Theater, in Munich. Together with The Lady from the Sea and Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler forms the Munich trilogy (Ibsen lived in Munich when he wrote them.) The heroines, Ellida, Rebecca, and Hedda, are all determined women, but only Ellida is able to achieve freedom from the consequences of her past actions. Hedda, who, as the play opens, has just married the dull academic Tesman to avoid a spinster’s life, realizes that she has trapped herself in a life of impossible tedium, with suicide as her only way out.
