CAMP LIFE Twelve Photogravures from Original Photographs by S. R. Stoddard.

Joseph Knight Company, Boston 1890 - [ii], 12 leaves of plates [complete]. No date of publication listed; circa 1890. Original green cloth binding with inset gravure on front cover; heavily worn and soiled, with some fraying. The rear inner hinge is detached, and the front inner hinge is weakened, leaving the text block intact. Most of the plates are foxed on the verso. A few page/plate edges are lightly soiled. One plate (title: Absorbed) has a small spot where a foreign object fused with the paper within the image area. The first three plates have a small tear near the hinge, and one plate has a small chip with loss to the margin on an inner corner. The title page and endpapers are lightly thumbcreased at the fore-edge. Four of the leaves of plates are moderately foxed, mainly to the edges of the image area and the margins. A few plates are almost devoid of foxing, while the remaining five plates have minor foxing, mostly to the margins. Includes "12 Photogravure plates with 18 illustrations from photographs of Adirondack scenery.Printed by the N.Y. Photo-Gravure Co., N.Y. This, by far, is Seneca Ray Stoddard's most important book: it contains most of his best examples, and the photogravures are wonderfully printed. It shows that he was more interested in capturing the actual feel of the place and its people than in presenting the standard tourist fare that most other photographers would produce. Few copies of this remarkable book are known, which leads one to believe all of his books were produced in very small editions." Hanson Collection catalog, p. 124. Seneca Ray Stoddard (1844-1917). Topics: Camping, New York state, Adirondack Mountains, Lake George Lake, Saint Lawrence River. First edition. Size: Oblong octavo (8vo) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        THE EMANCIPATED

1890 - [a handsome copy] A Novel. In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1890. Original patterned paper-covered boards with brown cloth spines. First Edition, which consisted of 1,000 copies (of which, according to the publisher, only 492 were sold -- but that may have been Bentley's ruse to avoid paying Gissing "bonuses" that would kick in if 850 or all 1,000 were to sell). The young widow Miriam Baske leaves grey Lancashire for the sun of Naples, Italy, where she finds herself among many of her countrymen in a vastly different social scene -- similar to some of Henry James's accounts of transplanted Americans and Britishers, and reminiscent of MIDDLEMARCH. The novel marked the beginning of Gissing's series of psychological novels, "which were less concerned with the effects of environment and more concerned with the emotional and intellectual conflicts experienced by socially alienated characters" [Collie].~This was the only one of Gissing's novels to have been published by Bentley -- though Bentley had earlier paid for but not published MRS. GRUNDY'S ENEMIES, suppressed on moral grounds. For Bentley in the 1890s, this is quite a tame binding; trying to stave off the demise of the three-decker format, Bentley came out with some outrageously florid bindings in the final years (the three-decker died in 1894 anyway).~This is a bright copy, just about fine (a discreet owner ink-stamp on the corner of each front paste-down) -- condition in which Gissing three-deckers are now extremely scarce. Coustillas A8.1; Collie A8a; Spiers & Coustillas L1; Sadleir 966; Wolff 2546. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Baume Au pays des lettres, 1922). Maupassant ne s'y était pas trompé, comme il l'indique dans cette lettre à Henry Kistemaeckers du 7 mai 1882: "Je réponds de la vente à la Librairie Nouvelle. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE PRINCIPLE WRITINGS OF ONE OF THE GREATEST EXPLORERS OF THE DARK CONTINENT. "By 1885 Stanley had become deeply interested in the schemes of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Mackinnon, chairman of the British India Steam Navigation Company, for establishing a British protectorate in East Equatorial Africa, and it was believed that this object could be furthered at the same time that relief was afforded to Emin Pasha, governor of the the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who had been isolated by the Mahdist rising of 1881-1885.Instead of choosing the direct route Stanley decided to go by way of the Congo, as thereby he would be able to render services to the infant Congo State, then encountering great difficulties with the Zanzibar Arabs established on the Upper Congo" (EB). Stanley and Tippoo Tib, the chief of the Congo Arabs, entered into an agreement for the latter to assume governorship of the Stanley Falls station and supply carriers for the Emin relief expedition, and then travelled up the Congo to Bangala together. They parted ways at Stanley Falls and Stanley started his trip toward Albert Nyanza, leaving a rear-guard at Yambuya on the lower Aruwimi under the command of Major E.M. Barttelot. Stanley’s journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through "nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest" that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley’s men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Finally upon the arrival at Albert Nyanza, Stanley achieved communication with Emin but was troubled by the non-arrival of his rear-guard. He retraced his steps back to Yambuya to find that Tippoo Tib had broken faith, Barttelot had been murdered, and the camp was in disarray and only one European was left. Stanley again set out for Albert Nyanza, where Stanley, Emin Pasha, and the survivors of the rear-guard began the return journey to Zanzibar by way of Uganda, a trip during which he discovered the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori), traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Albert Edward Nyanza and the great southwestern gulf of Victorian Nyanza. Of Stanley’s original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. One of the greatest feats in African travel, Stanley traveled thousands of miles in his claims to the great stretches of continental African territory. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In Darkest Africa or The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1890. Stanley's Last African Expedition STANLEY, Henry M[orton]. In Darkest Africa or The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria. With One Hundred and Fifty Woodcut Illustrations and Maps. In Two Volumes. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1890. First edition. Two octavo volumes (8 11/16 x 5 5/8 inches; 221 x 143 mm.). xv, [1, blank], 529, [1, printer's imprint]; xv, [1, blank], 472, [2, publisher's advertisements] pp. Wood-engraved frontispiece (with tissue guard) in Volume I, photogravure frontispiece portrait (with tissue guard) in Volume II, thirty-six additional numbered wood-engraved plates, 105 wood-engraved text illustrations, three folding color maps, one color profile sketch, and one folding table. Contemporary (possibly publisher's) three quarter maroon morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt, spines with five raised bands, decoratively paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut, matching marbled end-papers. A near fine set. "Stanley's last African expedition began in 1887 as a relief mission to aid Emin Pasha, the German-born governor of southern Sudan's Equatoria province, who had been cut off from Anglo-Egyptian forces to the north since the outbreak of a Muslim revolt six years earlier. Stanley again ascended the Congo, then marched across central Africa toward Emin Pasha's stronghold on Lake Albert. Along the way, he lost nearly half of the 700 members of the expedition, with the survivors trailing behind him over several hundred miles. Ironically, by the time Stanley reached Lake Albert, he was critically low on provisions and had to be resupplied by Emin Pasha, the man he had come to rescue. Stanley and Emin Pasha explored the Semliki River, establishing it as the principal connection between Lake Albert and Lake Edward. While in the region, Stanley came upon the Ruwenzori Mountains, the fabled Mountains of the Moon, which had been described by the ancient geographer Ptolemy. After a 3,000 mile journey, in which he had traversed Africa from west to east, Stanley and the survivors of his expedition, along with Emin Pasha and the remainder of the Equatoria garrison, reached Zanzibar in late 1889" (Carl Waldman, Who Was Who in World Exploration, pp. 598-599). Sir Henry Morton Stanley, GCB (1841-1904) was a Welsh-American journalist and explorer who was famous for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Upon finding Livingstone, Stanley reportedly asked, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Stanley is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, his work in and development of the Congo Basin region in association with King Leopold II of the Belgians, and commanding the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1899.

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies:

(Antwerp) New York: Frederick Stokes & Brother. 1890 Bound with the orig. grey printed paper wrappers, in full dark green crushed morocco, elaborate gilt floral borders, raised bands, gilt compartments, red & brown morocco labels, gilt dentelles. A superb copy of a scarce edition.7 copies only in the UK; none recorded in North America on OCLC. The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, published partly in response to his infamous libel trial brought against John Ruskin, Whistler had asked his friend Sheridan Ford to edit it. Prior to publication however, the relationship broke down and Whistler chose instead to edit the work himself; it was published by William Heinemann in 1890. Ford, determined to publish his own version, printed an edition of 2000 copies in Antwerp. He was followed to Antwerp by Whistler's lawyer Sir George Lewis who successfully imprisoned Ford and embargoed all 2000 copies. Subsequently Ford issued another pirated edition with the unauthorised imprint of Frederick Stokes & Brother. Although another Paris edition was suppressed by Lewis, copies of the 'Frederick Stokes' edition made their way to America. Ford, in his initial 'note' commends 'the book to Mr Whistler's enemies, with the soothing assurance that should each of them purchase a copy the edition will be exhausted in a week'. A collection of letters and articles chronicling in large part his many grievances against his acquaintances and friends. Included is Ruskin's criticism of Whistler's painting Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket that propelled Whistler to the libel courts:'For Mr. Whistler's own sake, no less than for the protection of the purchaser, Sir Coutts Lindsay ought not to have admitted works into the gallery in which the ill-educated conceit of the artist so nearly approached the aspect of wilful imposture. I have seen, and heard, much of Cockney impudence before now; but never expected to hear a coxcomb ask two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public's face.'

Hedda Gabler. [Skuespil i fire akter]

København [Copenhagen] Glydendalske Boghandels Forlag (F. Hegel & Son) 1890 First Printing of perhaps Ibsen's "most frequently performed play in the modern theatre." (PMM) In Danish (then the literary language of both Denmark and Norway). Small 8vo: [4],236pp. Publisher's green cloth (copies were also identically bound in red, brown, and grey, no known priority), front cover elaborately blocked in gilt and black, back board with blind-stamped borders and central publisher's logo, floral patterned endpapers, gilt edges. A brilliant copy, barely rubbed to spine ends. PMM 375. Fine ¶ First trade edition, preceded by twelve copies printed in London, in Norwegian, "under a well-intentioned illusion that this was necessary for copyright protection." (PMM) Published on December 16, 1890, although the play only premiered on January 31, 1891, at the Königliches Residenz-Theater, in Munich. Together with The Lady from the Sea and Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler forms the Munich trilogy (Ibsen lived in Munich when he wrote them.) The heroines, Ellida, Rebecca, and Hedda, are all determined women, but only Ellida is able to achieve freedom from the consequences of her past actions. Hedda, who, as the play opens, has just married the dull academic Tesman to avoid a spinster's life, realizes that she has trapped herself in a life of impossible tedium, with suicide as her only way out. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Vorlesungen über die Theorie der elliptischen Modulfunctionen. Ausgearbeitet und vervollständigt von Dr. Robert Fricke. Vol. 1: Grundlegung der Theorie. Vol. 2: Fortbildung und Anwendung der Theorie.

Leipzig: B. G. Teubner, 1890. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 1890-1892. 8vo (242 x 161 mm). xix [1], 764; xv [1], 712 pp. Several diagrams in text. Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards (extremities rubbed), gilt-lettered spine, sprinkled edges. Paper little age-toned, occasional minor spotting, slight foxing to titl-pages. Still very good, unmarked copy. ----DSB VII, p.398. FIRST EDITION of this important work on elliptic function theory by the well known German mathematician. Felix Klein (1849-1925) is best known for his work in non-euclidean geometry, for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory, and for results in function theory. He considered equations of degree greater than four and was particularly interested in using transcendental methods to solve the general equation of the fifth degree. After building on methods due to Hermite and Kronecker he went on to completely solve the problem using the group of the icosahedron. This work led him to consider elliptic modular functions which he studied and presented in a series of basic papers. In collaboration with Robert Fricke he finally presented the complete theory in the present extensive work that is still indispensable for research (DSB). Very Good.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First American Edition, most likely printed in England at the same time as the London, Samson, Low issue. Two octavo volumes (8 11/16 x 5 3/4 inches; 222 x 146 mm.). xxvii, [i, blank], 528; x, 483, [1, blank], [12, publisher's catalog] pp. Profusely illustrated with over one hundred full-page plates and in-text drawings, three folding maps, and two large folding maps in pockets, each at the back of the volume. Publisher's light green cloth over boards, front covers and spines pictorially decorated in gold and colors, original brown coated end-papers. An unusually nice and near fine set of this classic. First edition of Stanley's important work on the founding of the Congo Free State. This monumental record of exploration, history, and socio political economy is the result of Stanley's expedition up the Congo River in 1879-84 and his attempts to re-open the interior for King Leopold of Belgium.         In Darkest England and the Way Out.

London: International Headquarters of the Salvation Army, [1890] - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, new endpapers. Rebacked with original spine laid down and new endpapers. Stamp of Ashton-under-Lyne Public Libraries to top edge, library number to the spine. Text block lightly toned, occasional pencilled corrections and underlinings to text. Nonetheless a very good presentable copy. Folding chromolithographic frontispiece. First edition, very scarce presentation copy inscribed by Booth on the half-title: "With faith and hope, William Booth, November 7.90." Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, had considerable help in the writing of In Darkest England from the campaigning journalist W. T. Stead, fellow Salvationist Suzie Forest Swift, and Commissioner Frank Smith. Stead appears to have done most of the writing, but pointed out in a letter to a friend "the sole responsibility and the dominating mind was [Booth's] and his alone." "Booth's colossal self-confidence, his burning sense of injustice coupled with unswerving devotion to his purpose, and his deep sympathy with the unfortunate, made of him an evangelist and an organiser of the first order."
