        The Tragic Muse

London: Macmillan and Co. 1890 - First English edition. Three volumes. One of 500 copies. Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt, black coated endpapers. About near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, bright gilt, former owner's inscription to the front pastedowns, scattered spotting, otherwise bright and fresh pages, upper covers have evidence of bookplate removal, spines slightly starting at front hinge of Volume I, otherwise sturdy and intact spines. Overall, bright and attractive, in unsophisticated original cloth. Edel & Laurence A34b. Originally published serially in seventeen installments in the Atlantic Monthly from January 1889-May 1890, The Tragic Muse was Henry James' longest novel to date. The plot tells of two aspiring artists, painter Nick Dormer and actress Miriam Rooth, who endeavor to find both artistic and commercial success. The large cast of characters that encounter Nick and Miriam throughout the text comprise a panoramic view of nineteenth century English society. James originally offered The Tragic Muse to Macmillan, but was dissatisfied with their offers. Accordingly, the first edition of this text was published on June 7, 1890, by Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., and was followed by this first English edition on June 28th of the same year. Notorious for heavily editing his serialized stories before book publication, James naturally made many revisions to The Tragic Muse, and his dual publication lead to slightly different revisions in the American and English editions. Notably, the use of punctuation, specifically commas, varies significantly in the Atlantic Monthly, Houghton, and Macmillan editions, with the heaviest use in the Atlantic Monthly and lightest in Macmillan. As James was known for using commas sparingly, this first English edition most closely mirrors the author's natural writing style. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Slang and its analogues past and present. A dictionary, historical and comparitive, of the heterodox speech of all classes of society for more than three hundred years. With synonyms in English, French, German, Italian, etc"

London: printed for subscribers only, 1890-1904 London: printed for subscribers only. 1890-1904. "First edition limited to 750 signed and numbered copies (this, no. 361); 7 volumes, sq. 8vo; extremities rubbed and occasionally chipped and cracked, but all in all a very good, sound set in original half polished red calf over Japanese vellum boards, lettered in gilt on upper covers and spines (the set was also available in paper-covered boards). A new edition was begun in 1903 but did not progress past the letter B, and an abridgement appeared in 1905. ""Farmer and Henley's dictionary represents many improvements in English slang lexicography. They provided fully referenced citations both to support their definitions and to indicate dates of usage. At Henley's insistence, they resisted the temptation to speculate about unknowable etymologies. They defined obscene and offensive terms without undo resort to evasion or obscurity. As their work progressed, they developed a firmer sense of the boundaries of slang, and became more ruithless in excluding dialect and colloquial terms ... Their influence on later slang lexicographers cannot be overstated ... Slang and its Analogues has yet to be superceded. Even Partridge could not sustain the detail as well as the scope of the earlier work"" (Julie Coleman in 2009). Kennedy 11994; see Coleman, History of Cant and Slang Dictionaries, III, pp. 53-73 who devotes a whole chapter to this important work."

Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh, and other pageants for a baby girl

The 12 coloured wood engraving plates make this a truly desirable and attractive volume. Robertson was part of the talented group of artists and illustrators who flourished in London in the 1890's and he claimed to have been influenced by Crane and the Glasgow school [Houfe] - something that is clearly evident in the illustrations in this work. The work is essentially a poem, written as a play for a young one year old child. Note - Robertson is perhaps best known for his illustration that was used for the frontispiece for the first edition of Graham's Wind in the Willows. Blue / purple cloth covered boards with illustration and titling in black and yellow to both boards and backstrip. 265x210mm. 152pp plus 8pp publisher's catalogue at rear. Fading to boards and backstrip. Corners, top/tail backstrip bumped. Small edge section of ffep and first prelim is creased with a small nib of paper loss.         Black Forest Photo Album with An Unusual Relief Depicting Putti, One Blowing Bubbles, the Other, Playing Cymbals

Berner Oberland, Switzerland. Very Good Plus. N.d., circa 1890. The front board is quite elaborate, with a beveled perimeter of a richly painted wood grain. Within is an oblong piece of walnut in the quintessential Black Forest, or in actuality, Swiss Brienzerware, style. By this is meant the delicate foliate relief vignettes which rest on lightly pitted wood. But this frames a light walnut oblong oval with the putti relief that bespeaks more eighteenth century rococo than standard Brienzerware, except that the stones and vegetation at the base are consistent with Brienzerware. The rear board of the album has a pyrographic bouquet such as was practiced by the Swiss carvers later in the nineteenth century. The album, now empty of photos, has 25 thick card leaves, and it is kept closed with a brass clasp. The spine is of brown morocco.

On the recto of the ad page before the title page announcing other titles by Holmes the author has handwritten the last and best known stanza of his famous poem "The Last Leaf"--"And if I should live to be/The last leaf upon the tree/In the spring,/Let them smile, as I do now,/At the old forsaken bough/Where I cling"--and SIGNED with his initials and the dates 1831 and 1890 corresponding to the date of authorship and the date of the inscription. There is some light feathering to the ink on some of the words which is likely why the poem is lightly striked with an x in pencil and written out AGAIN by Holmes on the light yellow front endpaper, again in ink, and SIGNED as before. In addition, on the front blank between the two pages with the holograph manuscript, the author has INSCRIBED and SIGNED the book: Dr. W. E. Rust/with the kind regards of/Oliver Wendell Holmes. Dr. Rust was a surgeon operating in California in the 1850s and was contracted by the U.S. Government in the 1870s to work with the Apaches.

Paa Ski over Grønland. En Skildring af den norske Grønlands-Ekspedition 1888-89.

      H. Aschehoug, Kristiania (Oslo) 1890. 704 sider. Illustreret af A. Bloch, Th. Holmboe, Eiv.

Hedda Gabler. Skuespil i fire akter.

Copenhagen: Gyldendalske Boghandels Forlag, 1890 - Octavo. Original pale green paper wrappers printed in red and black. Brown cloth slipcase and chemise. A little browned as usual, wrapper edges very slightly chipped in places, a very good copy. First edition, wrappers issue, of the defining stage work of the period, ushering in one of the theatre's first truly developed neurotic female protagonists almost a decade before Freud's first work of psychoanalysis. Under the illusion that it was necessary for copyright protection, Ibsen had 12 sets of sheets sent to England for advance publication there five days earlier than this. This first published edition is more often encountered in a decorative cloth case binding: the wrappers issue is a rarer survival. The text was published on 16 December 1890, but the play was not premiered until 31 January 1891, at the Königliches Residenz-Theater, Munich. PMM 375.
