        THE ART OF AUTHORSHIP

1890. Literary Reminiscences, Methods of Work, and Advice to Young Beginners, personally contributed by Leading Authors of the Day. Compiled and Edited by George Bainton. London: James Clarke & Co., 1890. 8 pp ads dated "1/6/90". Original royal blue cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Edition of this compendium of advice on becoming an author, by the leading writers of the day. Henty's contribution is on pages 19-21; he ends with:~My advice to boys who want to become authors is this: Write a story and get some person in whose judgment you have confidence to give you his opinion frankly whether there is any promise in it. If he says no, give the thing up altogether. If he says yes, and you really feel that you have a talent for telling stories, and find that your stories are liked by your schoolfellows, then write, and write, and write. Burn all you write, for until you are two or three and twenty you will certainly not write anything worth reading...~This copy is fine except for some cracking of the rear endpaper -- and is quite a scarce book, especially in this condition.         In Darkest Africa

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington Limited,, 1890. or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria. 2 volumes, octavo, (213 × 132 mm) Contemporary tree calf by Bickers, red and black morocco labels, spines gilt in compartments, gilt arabesque panels to the boards, checkered edge-roll, edges and endpapers marbled. Frontispiece and coloured folding map to each, folding map and coloured profile sketch to Volume II, 36 other plates in all, numerous illustrations to the text. A little rubbing at the extremities, some skillful restoration to the joints, overall a very attractive set in a pleasing contemporary binding, unusually clean and bright internally. First edition. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha (who proved resistant to being "rescued"), his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for the mission have all come under suspicion then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. In the course of the journey Stanley met Roger Casement, then in service on the Congo, discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. Translations of In Darkest Africa appeared quickly in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch while sales of the English trade editions reached 150,000 copies.

Flore naturelle. Etudes par Henry Lambert.

. [Paris, Galavais (?), ca. 1890]. Folio (52 x 34 cm). Title and index, and 80 numbered, full colour plates (loose sheets), preserved in original printed boards with tie.l A very rare work of which surprisingly little is known. The fine illustrations, which are simultanously scientifically correct and drawn with a noticeable "art nouveau flair", are by the author, who is somewhat of a mystery himself. Born Henri-Lucien Lambert (1831-1909), he is principally known for decorating porcelain. Around 1880, the Parisian firm of Galavais published his "Flore decorative", a work with only 30 plates. Stylistically, the present "Flore Naturelle" is of a slightly later period. Another rare work by Lambert published by Galavais in the same period is the "Album de la decoration". That work is stylistically more similar to the "Flore naturelle". Each plate depicts and names one or several flowering plants, either wild species and/or cultivars. The total number of different plants is about 175. The index and plate captions give their French vernacular names. "Zürich, Moritz Kreutzmann" is pasted on the front board and the title page. This is not the publisher, but merely a distributor, being described here as "Buchhandlung für Architektur und Kunstgewerbe". Board extremities a bit rubbed, a few plates with vague ink remains, some edges frayed with very short tears, but never obtrusive. In all a very good copy. Benezit 5, p. 372. Neither in Nissen BBI, nor in Tongiorgi Tomasi's "Oak Spring Flora"..

Original Photograph Titled in ink on verso:] 48. At Nanaimo, B.C.

1890 - Ca. 1890s. Albumen print ca. 11x19,5 cm (4 ¼ x 7 ¾ in). Mounted on the original photographer's card with printed signature and general title: "B.C. Towne, Portland, Oregon. Alaska, Columbia River and Northwest Scenery" on the lower margin. With a period ink title on verso. Minor old mount residue on verso, otherwise a very good photo. An early interesting view of the loading dock in the port of Nanaimo. "Bertram C. Towne was a photographer active in Portland, Oregon, during the period 1884-1895. From 1884-1887, B.C. Towne and Elbridge W. Moore operated the San Francisco Gallery in Portland as partners, having assumed control of the gallery after the death of W.H. Towne. At this time, the studio was also listed as "Towne & Moore." From 1888-1895, the studio operated as "B.C. Towne Photograph Company" and was located on First Street in Portland. In October, 1890, the West Shore, a popular weekly publication that promoted life in the Pacific Northwest, named Towne as a photographic contest winner in the "professional" category. Carl Mautz, in Biographies of Western Photographers (1997), states that Towne's studio "became one of the premier galleries in Portland, employing many of the best photographers in the area" and that it "published boudoir format scenes of Alaska, the Columbia River, Mount Hood, and other Northwest scenes."" Printed signature in the plate is (Robert Alexander Hillingford was an English painter. He specialized in historical pictures, often battle scenes) The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. An Imperial French army under the command of Emperor Napoleon was defeated by the armies of the Seventh Coalition, comprising an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. It was the culminating battle of the Waterloo Campaign and Napoleon's last. The defeat at Waterloo ended his rule as Emperor of the French, marking the end of his Hundred Days return from exile. Upon Napoleon's return to power in 1815, many states that had opposed him formed the Seventh Coalition and began to mobilise armies. Two large forces under Wellington and Blücher assembled close to the north-eastern border of France. Napoleon chose to attack in the hope of destroying them before they could join in a coordinated invasion of France with other members of the coalition. The decisive engagement of this three-day Waterloo Campaign (16-19 June 1815) occurred at the Battle of Waterloo. According to Wellington, the battle was "the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life".Napoleon delayed giving battle until noon on 18 June to allow the ground to dry. Wellington's army, positioned across the Brussels road on the Mont-Saint-Jean escarpment, withstood repeated attacks by the French, until, in the evening, the Prussians arrived in force and broke through Napoleon's right flank. At that moment, Wellington's Anglo-allied army counter-attacked and drove the French army in disorder from the field. Pursuing coalition forces entered France and restored King Louis XVIII to the French throne. Napoleon abdicated, surrendered to the British, and was exiled to Saint Helena, where he died in 1821. quoted from Wikipedia.
