        The Writings...Signed

Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1890-92. First collected edition. Boards. Very Good. LOWELL, James Russell. The Writings Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1890-92. Twelve vols. Original boards, white cloth spines and paper labels. Offsetting from clippings on Lowell’s death in Vol. 1. Spines darkened, soiled and rubbed, as usual, else a Very Good or better set. & & FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, one of only 300 numbered sets. Lowell (1819-1891) author, teacher, magazine editor [The Atlantic Monthly, The North American Review], and public servant, produced a formidable canon of prose during his long and venerated career. This Presentation Copy, contains a long, signed inscription on the front fly leaf of Volume I, from Lowell to Thomas Francis Bayard, Secretary of State under Grover Cleveland and the first U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. This is a significant association, since Lowell was himself U.S. Minister to the Court of St. James eight years earlier--- before the U.S. decided to give its foreign envoys ambassadorial rank. & & INSCRIBED BY LOWELL: "Mr. T.F.B. It is a great pleasure to inscribe here my unqualified respect for a man so eminently conspicuous for patriotic service in the Senate and the Cabinet and so faithful to public and private duty as T.F. Bayard. J.R. Lowell 31st Dec. 1890" SIGNED BY BAYARD. Additionally signed by Bayard: T.F. Bayard, Nov. 7th, 1890. & & Lowell was considered primarily a poet, but his essays and literary criticism proved him to be an apt humorist and political satirist as well. His early career showed him deeply involved with the abolitionist movement. “Thus at twenty-nine, he had made his challenge in all the fields of production in which his ultimate place among American writers must be determined.” His Bigelow Papers [1848] satirize and criticize America’s involvement in the Mexican War, especially in regards to the possible extension of slavery. A later series of Bigelow Papers readily conveyed his sentiments on the Civil War and had a visible effect on public opinion at that time. In 1877 he was appointed Minister to Spain and the minister to the Court of St. James in 1880.&

Two Original Photographs of Vancouver Looking Towards the North Shore, circa 1890. With A Panoramic Photo Type Postcard of Vancouver Looking Towards the North Shore, circa 1900.

Vancouver: circa 1890-1900. - Two Photographs measuring approximately 10 x 18cm (4 x 7 inches) and a Photo Postcard measuring approximately 8 x 53cm (3 x 21inches), mounted with recent archival matting. The photographs and the postcard are in very good condition. These images give an interesting depiction of the early development of Vancouver. "The settlement which came to be called Gastown grew up quickly around the original makeshift tavern established by "Gassy" Jack Deighton in 1867 on the edge of the Hastings Mill property. In 1870, the colonial government surveyed the settlement and laid out a town site, renamed "Granville" in honour of the then-British Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Granville. This site, with its natural harbour, was eventually selected as the terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway to the disappointment of Port Moody, New Westminster and Victoria, all of which had vied to be the railhead. A railway was among the inducements for British Columbia to join the Confederation in 1871, but the Pacific Scandal and arguments over the use of Chinese labour delayed construction until the 1880s. The City of Vancouver was incorporated on 6 April 1886, the same year that the first transcontinental train arrived. CPR president William Van Horne arrived in Port Moody to establish the CPR terminus recommended by Henry John Cambie, and gave the city its name in honour of George Vancouver. The Great Vancouver Fire on 13 June 1886, razed the entire city. The Vancouver Fire Department was established that year and the city quickly rebuilt. Vancouver's population grew from a settlement of 1,000 people in 1881 to over 20,000 by the turn of the century and 100,000 by 1911"(Wikipedia).

        The Sign of Four

London: Spencer Blackett., 1890. Octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in red morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single gilt fillet rule to boards, twin rule to dentelles, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. With frontispiece by Charles Kerr. Very occasional spot to text leaves, an excellent copy in fine binding. First edition. This copy has both internal issue points, "138" on the contents page is incomplete and appears as "13" and "wishes" is misspelt on p.56 as "w shed". However, these issue points are present in both the first and second issue of the first edition, the only way of determining between the two issues is by the binding. The second issue was reissued by Griffith Farran and Company, with the original title page. The covers are also the same except for the imprint at the foot of the spine which reads "Griffith Farran and Cos/ Standard/ Library". As this copy has been rebound it is not possible to distinguish whether it is a first or second issue of the first edition. This copy is bound without the publishers' catalogue found in some first edition copies.

        The Tragic Muse

London: Macmillan and Co. 1890 - First English edition. One of 500 copies. Three volumes, original publisher's blue cloth. Louis Auchincloss's copy bearing his bookplate to each volume. An additional former owner bookplate to the front pastedowns of each volume, some wear with fraying to spine ends and corners, short tears along spine, hinges cracked and secure. A good, completely unrestored set, housed in a custom cloth box with folding chemise. Edel & Laurence A34b. Auchincloss's writing embodied the old New York traditions of Henry James and Edith Wharton. Auchincloss wrote in his 1977 novel, The Dark Lady: ".Do you know Henry James's The Tragic Muse? It's the best novel written about an actress. A rising young diplomat asks the heroine to give up her career to become his wife and a future ambassadress.Ah how James saw it, the idiocy of any man's thinking that a real actress could even consider balancing love against the stage!" Originally published serially in seventeen installments in the Atlantic Monthly from January 1889-May 1890, The Tragic Muse was Henry James' longest novel to date. The plot tells of two aspiring artists, painter Nick Dormer and actress Miriam Rooth, who endeavor to find both artistic and commercial success. The large cast of characters that encounter Nick and Miriam throughout the text comprise a panoramic view of nineteenth century English society. James originally offered The Tragic Muse to Macmillan, but was dissatisfied with their offers. Accordingly, the first edition of this text was published on June 7, 1890, by Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., and was followed by this first English edition on June 28th of the same year. Notorious for heavily editing his serialized stories before book publication, James naturally made many revisions to The Tragic Muse, and his dual publication lead to slightly different revisions in the American and English editions. Notably, the use of punctuation, specifically commas, varies significantly in the Atlantic Monthly, Houghton, and Macmillan editions, with the heaviest use in the Atlantic Monthly and lightest in Macmillan. As James was known for using commas sparingly, this first English edition most closely mirrors the author's natural writing style. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Photograph Album of a Trip to England

Oblong folio. Leather over flexible boards with blank black paper leaves. An album with 419 mounted photographs, 57 unmounted photographs, and one drawing. Many different sizes and processes, mostly gelatin-silver prints with a few cyanotypes. Photographs are mostly near fine, a few have creases or small damage, some are a bit oxidized, overall very good; the boards are near fine. The unmounted photographs are mostly captioned on the verso, perhaps the mounted ones are as well. Undated but circa 1890-1895. Perhaps slightly more than a dozen of the images are cabinet card portraits or commercial images, the rest are originals. Several of the unmounted images have the stamped back mark of Rev. Leonidas E. Coyle of Bridgeton, New Jersey, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church (also laid in is an interesting stamped label from a grocery and dry-goods store, presumably where the album was purchased). Most of the images are from a journey to England. The album begins with shipboard photos, but the major subject in England is churches and church ruins (Lincoln, Chester, Tintern Abbey, and many others), occasionally leavened by a small child or stodgy-looking clerical gentleman. The quality of the photographs are generally quite accomplished. Perhaps the last quarter of the album consists of portraits of young children with hoops, tennis gear, reading, canoeing, throwing a ball, with false mustaches, dressed as a soldier, with dogs and cats. Many seem quite pensive. Perhaps because of the fidgety nature of children, the childhood photographs seem of a lower artistic quality, but many are still quite charming. .

Pluschow, Rome, Circa 1890-1900 - 6 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches, an original albumen photograph by Wilhelm Pluschow (1852-1930), has an Olympia Gallery (Philadelphia) stamp on the reverse, lower right, as well as Pluschow's studio stamp "Guglielmo Pluschow, Corso Umberto 1 333, Roma". The printing is good, there are several small brown spots, one in the chest, another at the groin. There is a slight crease at the lower right corner but not that noticeable.       1890. DITTRICH, Max. DER DEUTSCH-FRANZOSISCHE KRIEG 1870 UND 1871. Gedenk- Blatter in Wort und Bild an die Ehrentage der deutschen Nation. Dresden & New York: Druck & Verlag von H. G. Munchmeyer, [1890]. Profusely illustrated with color lithographs and wood-engraved text illustrations. 86pp., plus illus. 17 3/4 by 22 3/8 inches (45.5 x 55.2 cm.). Oblong folio, brown cloth, interlaced border stamped in black to boards, title and decoration stamped in gilt to upper board. This is a near contemporary account of the Franco-Prussian war, which resulted in the establishment of the Third Republic of France and the German Empire, produced in Germany. It is illustrated with 25 full-page lithographs depicting military actions; 24 of which are in brilliant color. The text pages have printed borders and numerous wood-engraved illustrations showing supplementary action and portraits of prominent people and leaders on both the French and German sides. The paper has toned at the edges and is brittle, showing several short tears and some chipping; the title page is torn in half, but both pieces are present. The volume is dampstained along the fore-edge, affecting the text and some of the plates. Two of the plates have closed tears which enter the image. The volume lacks the spine, although both boards are attached to the text block by the sewing cords; the cloth is moderately stained, and the gilt has dulled. This is an interesting historical item with impressive chromoliths; it is offered as is.
