Repertoire Chromatique. Solution raisonnee des problemes les plus usuels dans l'etude & l'emploi des couleurs.

. Paris, Gauthier-Villars et Fils, 1890, Floio, XII, 144, (6) pp., 289 full page color plates (numbered I, Ibis, II-XXVIII), and a transparent serpente with printed explanation, fine half leather with marbled boards.. First-Edition of the "Repertoire Chromatique. Solution raisonnee & pratique des problemes les plus usuels dans l'etude & l'emploi des couleurs. Vingt-Neuf Tableaux en Chromos representant 952 teintes differentes & definies groupees en plus de 600 gammes typiques". - - " .... system that can perhaps be described as the invention of the color chart." Kunihiko Sugiyama, Color Circles: Who invented color circles - - Charles Lacouture (1832-1908) " was a French botanist, Jesuit and professor of physical and natural sciences at the Ecole Saimt-Clement in Metz. While admiring the work of Michel-Eugene Chevreul (to whom the book is dedicated; see entry in chapter 4), he found it wanting in several respects and hoped to fill its gaps in his own color system. His goals were to improve on color nomenclature, established a theory from a number of fundamental facts, show typical color ranges in charts, and consider possible applications for the system. - - Lacouture's work is divided into four books and 29 colored tables. The tables are colored by chromolithography. Full colors are printed as solid surfaces, and whitened colors, as lines of different thickness on white paper. The gray scale and blackened colors are obtained by printing (or over-printing) lines of black ink at varying line width. Secondary and tertiary colors are obtained by over-printing one primary color with another at right angles or a primary color with curved lines. - - The charts in the book were printed with lines from 1/12 mm to /12 mm in width. The are best viewed from a certain distance to obtain mixture of the components. Lacouture wrote that his are the first color charts produced by this method and credits the chromolithographer M.G. Severeyns with the artistic work. - - While using a four-ink printing method, Lacouture's system is meant to be a system of color perceptions. The chromatic circle is derived from three primitive colors red R, yellow J, anbd blue B, located at the corners of an equilateral triangle. They are defined by wavelengths R = 700 nm; J = 580 nm, and B = 470 nm. The intermediate hues orange ( = 597 nm), green (VE = 526 nm), and violet (V = 400 nm) are placed on a second triangle, with always one intermediate hue interspaced, the whole system in form of a circle of flower petals , affording a general view of the hue arrangement (rose synoptique). Complementary colors as represented by the appropriate wavelengths are placed diametrically opposite in this figure. The six chromatic principal colors are toned with white (BL and black (N), .... - - Lacouture described the three primitives as equidistant, or equally estranged, from each other. He took all the other colors from which they derive; thus, "true green" is equally distant from the blue and yellow from which is derived. He defined tones as the degree of chromatic intensity of a given color. Nuances (hues in our termninolgy) describe the degree of chromatic parentage of a color. The gray scale has five grades between black and white. .... - - Lacouture viewed his color tables as representing color standards (types). For this purpose, he selected pigments resulting in colors free from any trace of the other two. Regarding tone, he stated that they must be absolutely pure (franc), not whitish, or grayish, or blackish. But he was aware that any three pigments represents only approximations of perfect primitives. .... - - Lacouture did not discover any new facts about color order. His book is a labor of love and that shows earnest striving for clarity of relationship and standardization. His figures represent a novel approach to the problem of economical atlas coloration..." Hardcover. 279 x 184 mm (11 x 7 1/4"). viii, 190 pp. No. 50 OF 50 COPIES ON JAPON, WITH ALL ETCHINGS IN THREE STATES, from a total edition of 1,100 copies. HANDSOME BLUE-GRAY CRUSHED MOROCCO BY MARIUS MICHEL (stamp-signed on front doublure), cover with gilt French fillet border, raised bands, spine elegantly gilt in compartments with inlaid black morocco lily at center and fleuron cornerpieces, gilt titling, CITRON MOROCCO DOUBLURES framed by multiple gilt rules and each doublure with a dozen inlaid blue or black morocco lilies at corners, blue silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, all edges gilt. With a total of 126 etchings by Champollion after Raphael Collin, (39 of these consisting of a frontispiece and 12 full-page plates, all in three states, and 87 being 29 text vignettes, each in three states). A Large Paper Copy. Half title printed in gold; prospectus bound in at rear. Vicaire V, 392; "Bibliothèque Henri Petiet" VIII, 150 (this copy). Spine faintly sunned, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY with only the most trivial of imperfections, the text and plates entirely clean, fresh, and bright, and the binding lustrous and unworn. This is a deluxe edition of Longus' pastoral romance, offered here in outstanding condition and in a handsome binding produced by the most famous name in French binders of the period. Working at first by himself and then later with his son, Jean Marius Michel (also called Marius Michel the elder, 1821-90) produced distinguished work in the prevailing historical style for two decades, beginning in Paris in 1849, and he published important books on the history of binding as well. The firm came to even greater prominence when the son, Henri François Marius Michel (1846-1923) began producing bindings in a the completely new and original "Flore Ornamentale" style. The present binding is in the classical mode of Marius Michel the elder and perhaps by him, although, given the date of publication, he would have had to do this binding in the final year of his life. Whoever performed the work, it is characterized, like other bindings from the firm, by a remarkable elegance of design as well as the highest level of technical execution. Our volume is typical of the books collected by French art dealer and bibliophile Henri Petiet (1894-1980). An early champion of Picasso and Matisse, Petiet was much influenced by the great collector Henri Beraldi (1845-1931), and displayed the same taste and discrimination in his purchases. He was especially fond of luxuriously produced limited-run works like this one in signed bindings by all the great artisans of the period--Bozerian, Canape, Carayon, Cretté, Cuzin, Kieffer, Legrain, Maylander, Noulhac, Simier, Thouvenin, Trautz-Bauzonnet, and (as here) Marius Michel.

        Lepidoptera Indica.

London, L. Reeve & Co., 1890-1913. 10 volumes. 4to (275 x 215mm). pp. xii, 317; vii, 274; viii, 254; viii, 260; viii, 248; viii, 240; x, 286; ix, 293; viii, 278; x, 364, with 837 lithographed plates of which 836 beautifully hand-coloured. Publisher's red gilt pictorial cloth, top edges gilt. Very fine copy of this scarce work on the butterflies of India. It embodies the results of twenty-five years continuous study and research of the subject by the authors. The work contains full descriptions of the families, genera and species, their life histories, structure, variety of form, habitats, and geographical distribution. The plates are by J.N. Fitch, E.C. Knight and F.C. Moore and contain 5000 figures depicting over 1600 species. "Moore entered the doors of entomology by way of his artistic abilities. Dr. T. Horsfield (1777-1859), long associated with the East India Museum, required someone capable of doing natural history drawings, and, through an introduction, Frederic Moore obtained the post. Thus began a lifetime association with the Indian Lepidoptera. 'Lepidoptera Indica' was the last of the great works that flowed from his pen; at the time of his death six volumes had been published... after Moore's death the remaining volumes were completed by C. Swinhoe (1836-1923). Swinhoe had worked closely with Moore and was an expert lepidopterologist. Like Moore, most of his collecting had been done in India and adjacent territories, and he was well qualified to continue this great work"(P. Gibert. Butterfly Collectors and Painters p. 78).//In the 'Bibliographia Lepidopterologica' by W. Junk published in 1913, the work of Moore and Swinhoe is the most expensive work offered in the catalogue priced at M. 1500. It is followed by Hübner's 'Sammlung Europäischer Schmetterlinge' priced at M. 1200. The last copy we have sold of this book is 17 years ago and was priced fl. 60.000 (about 28.000 Euros).//Provenance: Signature of Mr. Kikumaro Okano on inside frontcover, Japanese stamp of his name on title-pages.//Nissen ZBI, 2879.

Birstein, 20. II. 1890. - 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

Theodor Herzl writes to a friend from Hamburg on October 24, 1890. The letter reads in full, "Dearest friend! Your letter has been forwarded to me here where I took refuge one day ahead of the annoying matter of the scheduled rehearsals. My plans are to return tomorrow morning. So far, Hasemann did not contact me and I purposely did not call on him either before receiving your message. Now I shall definitely approach him to bring the matter to a conclusion, if possible. I do think that he is the most suitable individual for that. I intend to work on the "couplets" during my trip home. At the moment, there are too many other issues mulling around in my head. Do write to me to my Berlin address "4 Jahreszeiten" where I will be residing again tomorrow. Eight days from today I expect to be in Vienna. Cordial greetings from your devoted, Herzl." The play was being performed by the Burgtheater, the former imperial court theatre and one of the most important theaters in Europe and the secon

        Autograph letter signed ("Johann Orth").

[London], 1. II. 1890. - Large 8vo. 2 pp. After renouncing his ties with the Imperial family, Johann Orth purchased a captain's license and bought the British barque "Saint Margaret" in January 1890. Together with his recently wedded wife and the entire crew, he got caught in a storm while sailing along Cape Horn on the night of 20 to 21 July and sank; neither he nor the crew was never heard from again. This fine letter (addressed to Anton Weissenböck, the manager of Castle Orth) gives detailed information as to which objects had been found aboard the "Saint Margaret": "all the silverware, china and glasswares, as much kitchenware as strictly necessary for the preparation of fine dinners for eight persons, 3 tablecloths for 12 persons, 8 tablecloths for 6 persons, 9 tablecloths for 4 persons; 20 small, grey napkins, 17 sheets, 18 pillowcases, 32 towels; bottles of wine: champagne 31, Hochheimer Dechantei 6, Hochheimer 10, Issan 10, Johannisberger 8, Madeira 3, Sherry 10, Muskat 4, Julien 14, Chablis 10, Rücksheimer 8, Vöslauer 42, Grinzinger 74, Larose 4, Julien 3, Oporto 1, Runkelsteiner 2; liqueurs: all; my white flannel trousers; my gun with bullets (green paper cartridges - not the brass ones) [.]". - On stationery with printed letterhead "Morley's Hotel, Trafalgar Square"; adhesive tape in the centerfold.

Norwegische Tänze für Pianoforte zu vier Händen von Opus 35 für Pianoforte solo vom Komponisten.

Leipzig: C.F. Peters, n.d. c.1890 - Quarto. Original printed card wraps, spine reinforced with linen. A little soiled, a few minor chops from the edge, but overall very good. Ownership inscription of Thomas "Fats" Waller to the upper wrap. Waller impressed early on with his keyboard skills, playing alongside his mother in the church where his father was a preacher from the age of 10, and accompanying the movies on the organ at the Lincoln Theater, Harlem, when just 14. He later became a pupil of the stride legend James P. Johnson, and also received classical tuition from Leopold Godowsky, his friend George Gershwin's sister's father-in-law, but his reputation rests upon his natural pianistic ability and his outrageous swing. However, like so many jazz musicians he sought "a more serious scope for his music" (Pollack, George Gershwin), and it is unsurprising to find his signature attached to this Grieg piano score. In fact, in Viper's Drag, his tea-tinged stride extravaganza from 1934, he quotes the theme from Grieg's The Hall of the Mountain King in the left hand. On the lower wrap Fats has pencilled the Broadway address of Edward I. Brown, the "rep" for the Robert Morton Organ Co. A wonderful piece of jazz ephemera of great immediacy, to hand on his piano it was used to jot down a 'phone message [Attributes: First Edition]
