The Patterns in Thumb and Finger Marks; on their Arrangement into naturally distinct Classees, the Permanence of the Papillary Ridges that make them, and the Resemblance of their Classes to ordinary Genera" AND "Methods of indexing Finger Marks" in Proceedings of the Royal Society, Volumes XLVIII (1890) and XLIX (1891)

      - FIRST EDITIONS of Francis Galton's important 1890 and 1891 papers providing a scientific basis and model for fingerprint identification and analysis, offered here in separate leather bound volumes. Galton provides a detailed statistical model of fingerprint analysis and identification and encourages its use; the exhaustive statistical models he provides proved enough to encourage law enforcement to begin to use fingerprints and courts to then sanction that use. The first paper is an 'Abstract' of a paper appearing in the Transactions in the same year. The second paper is a first edition, first printing. The papers can be viewed as the basis for his Galton's "Finger-Prints" of 1892 (Printing and the Mind of Man 376). Galton was able to establish that human fingerprints were remarkably stable from early youth to advanced age, even to after death. They changed size with growth, but (with one small exception) they did not change in their minutia. He described and classified described and classified fingerprints into eight broad categories. 1. plain arch, 2. tented arch, 3. simple loop, 4. central pocket loop, 5. double loop, 6. lateral pocket loop, 7. plain whorl, and 8. accidental. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison & Sons. Two complete volumes. 8vo. 8.5 by 5.5 inches (213 x 138mm). Volume XLVIII: 535 pages, [ xxviii], Galton pp. 455-457; Volume XLIX: 558 pages, [xxxii], Galton pp. 540-548. Illustrations: Two tables and two figures pertaining to the 1891 Galton paper. Exterior: Handsomely bound in worn half calf over marbled paper boards. Five raised bands at the spine. Spine labels are missing. Scuffing and rubbing at the edges, a bit more so at the head and foot of the spine. Professionally rendered Japanese paper repair at the spine on Volume XLIX. Tightly and very solidly bound. Interior: Complete. Ex-libris stamps to title and contents page; Springfield Library plate on rear pastedown. Marbled endpapers and pages. Bright and clean throughout. The Galton papers are pristine.

        SUSPENSE. In Three Volumes

London: Richard Bentley, 1890. Merriman, H. S. [Hugh Stowell Scott]. SUSPENSE. In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley, 1890. First Edition. An excellent copy in original publisher's deep blue cloth, decorated in both silver and gilt with a fancy sword design to the front boards, characteristic of Bentley's late Victorian penchant for super elaborate and eye-catching triple-decker novel design. The volumes are slightly cocked, there is a tiny bit of abrasion and some smudging to the edges but Very Good indeed. H. S. Merriman (Hugh Stowell Scott) died rather suddenly at the age of 41 but had already becomes one of the best-selling English authors of the 1890s. According to John Carter & Michael Sadleir in their 1947 classic exhibition catalogue, Merriman was the creator of "the strong, silent hero" of Victorian Fiction and they found it a suspenseful mystery in itself why Hollywood didn't adapt his fantastic plot-driven adventure tales. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. Sadleir 1729, Wolff 4772.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good.

Silver Collars 2 for 25 cents. "Gold" and "Silver" shirts - Original Wall Display Mirror advertising Silver Collars & Gold Shirts, in the original oak frame

Troy, NY: George P. Ide & Co.,, c.1890. Beveled glass mirror (13.5 x 17.5 ins.) mounted in original quarter-sawn oak decorative frame, with carved details around mirror edge, decorated in silver paint (18.75 x 22.75 ins.), with the advertising slogan reverse painted in silver at upper and lower edges of the mirror. Some minor damage to the mirror mercury-based finish at lower fore-edge with some bubbling, very minor damage to the frame, still a very well-preserved example, archival foam core now mounted against the reverse of the mirror, beneath the original fir backing, to prevent further degradation. A wonderful advertising display for Ide Silver shirts and collars, which originally came out of the downtown Vancouver, WA Store, which at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century catered to men's clothing, accessories, and shoes. George P. Ide & Co. was founded in 1865 by George P. Ide and S.V.R. Ford as Ide & Ford. Ide was one of the pioneers in the shirt & replaceable collar industry in Troy, NY which along with Arrow Collars, and others, grew by providing women with an easier way to clean their husbands' stained shirt collars without having to wash the entire shirt. In addition, the collars wore out a much faster rate than the rest of the shirts, so these replaceable collars would extend the life of the garments. In 1884, the company became George P. Ide & Co., and within the next 2 decades opened branch factories in Albany, Mechanicsville, Newburgh, Port Henry, and Keeseville, as well as a laundry plant in Petersburg. At the end of the 19th Century, they were one of the largest manufacturers of removable collars for men, and their line of Silver & Gold Shirts was marketed extensively. Their advertising usually emphasized a subtle play on Silver. See Men's Wear (Semi-Monthly), Vol. 24, p. 59 (1908); The Troy Daily Times, 1899, p. 17.

The Origin of the Aryans: An Account of the Prehistoric Ethnology and Civilisation of Europe

New York: Scribner & Welford. 1890. Second American edition (originally published in the US in 1889). Front hinge amateurishly restored, although not particularly offensively, corner bumped and rubbed, near very good. Front fly, and rear pastedown stamped: "Personal. Morris (Moe) Berg." Signature of "E. Berg," almost certainly that of his sister Ethel Berg, with whom he spent a substantial part of his life, and who later wrote a very scarce and desirable biography, My Brother Morris Berg. The Real Moe. The first half of the book is extensively underlined by Berg in pencil, with occasional notes in his hand. Berg is a remarkable figure, a lower middle class Jewish boy born in New York who was a Princeton and Columbia Law School graduate and professional baseball player who spoke seven languages (and who inspired the remark, "and he can't hit in any of them"). He appeared on the quiz show Information, Please! and put on a dazzling performance, belying the image of the knuckle-headed ballplayer. He used his time on a barnstorming tour of Japan to film Tokyo Harbor, the footage of which proved important to the eventual American war effort, and later was a spy for the US both during and after WWII. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he refused (but which Ethel accepted on his behalf after his death). His baseball card is reportedly on display at CIA headquarters. His life inspired several books, among them Nicholas Dawidoff's 1995 biography The Catcher Was a Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg. .

IDUNA. Zeitschrift für Dichtung und Kritik. Hgg. von der Freien deutschen Gesellschaft für Literatur in Wien. Hefte 1-7, 1. u. 2. Jahrgang 1892/93.

Lpz., Lit. Anstalt August Schulze.. Gr.-8°. Zus. 144 S.(Fortlaufende Paginierung). OBrosch. m. schwarzgedr. Tit. Einbde. rissig, tlw. fleckig u. gebräunt, im Seitensteg etw. angeschmutzt, 3 Einbandeckel tlw. od. ganz abgelöst, Vorderdeckel v. Hft.1 wasserfl., im Text papierbed. tlw. gebräunt.. Vgl. Dietzel/Hügel II; Weiermair Helmut, Lit. Zeitschr. Steinwand, Fritz Lemmermayer, Richard Kralik, Adolf Pichler, delle Grazie, Robert Plöhn, Hans Fraungruber, Guido List u.a.
