Superb pair of Cabinet photos by Hughes & Mullins, both signed, (Mary Victoria Feodore, 1857-1944, Princess, Daughter & Companion of Queen Victoria) & Prince Henry Maurice of BATTENBERG (1858-1896, Colonel, Her Husband)

1890 - showing the couple in Mediaeval costume, 6" x 4¼" no place, no date c. The practice of the Household performing tableau vivants over the New Year was revived some time after the death of the Prince Consort. There were normally several scenes, each representing a letter or word, followed by a final scene depicting the entire word. The Tableau often reproduced paintings - a particularly successful one being 'La Rixe' (The Brawl) after the painting by E. Meissonier which had been given to the Prince Consort in 1856. The scene was a quarrel in a tavern which Queen Victoria considered 'a truthful presentation of the picture'. They were not always so well received - a biblical tableau of Naomi and Ruth in 1888 was described by the Queen as 'not quite so successful as it might have been, owing to the ladies getting the giggles and shaking'. The Tableau Vivant photo is an unusual form of photography, which Queen Victoria had a passion for from the 1850s. This is one of the later ones which are more difficult to find as the majority of them have remained in Royal Collections. Princesses Helena Victoria and Marie Louise spent much of their year revolved around the Queen, which dates the picture to 1889 as the Princess Marie Louise was married to a German Prince the following year. The marriage did not prove happy and the Queen sent her an open telegram ordering her 'home to me'

        The Sign of Four

Spencer Blackett, London 1890 - The second issue, with "Griffith Farran" to the bottom of the spine. The book is reasonably firmly bound in the original red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and black, the boards are a little rubbed and bumped and the spine is slightly darkened, with minor marking. The text block is slightly age toned and dusty to the edges, it is starting to crack at the endpapers, but still relatively firm, there is a small bookseller's label to the front pastedown and a neatly written name to the reverse of the frontispiece. A very nice example of the second Sherlock Holmes title, which is quite uncommon in the original cloth. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The knife made famous by Alamo martyr Jim Bowie - a wonderful example of a later production

"""Bowie"" knife, silver and bone. The blade is approximately 8 inches long, and the hilt is 5 inches long. This knife was made by Bower, circa 1890, and is in lovely condition. It has a German silver mount, and stag bone handles that are well preserved. The original sheath has an imprint of a buffalo, making it of additional Western interest. The sheath clasp is missing the fastener, which could be replaced, and does not detract at all.Devised by James Bowie, who died in the siege of the Alamo, the Bowie knife achieved fame in the Sandbar duel in 1827, when Jim Bowie killed a man. It has since become the subject of a cycle of heroic folktales. Although supplanted by the Colt Six-Shooter, it was standard equipment for frontiersmen and backwoodsmen for four decades. Mountain Men used a modified form of the Bowie knife, Texas Rangers rode with it, and Mississippi River pirates disemboweled their victims with it. With a strong, well-guarded blade that could be thrown as well as wielded, it was both economical and practical for skinning, cutting meat, eating, fighting duels, hammering, and performing other functions."
