        19 Volumes of Sainte-Beuve's works

Paris - Garnier Freres, 1890 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Nineteen leatherbound volumes with gilt titles to the spine, marble paper covered boards, anddecorative floralpastedowns. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (December 23, 1804 in Boulogne-sur-Mer October 13, 1869 in Paris) was a literary critic and one of the major figures of French literary history. After several books of poetry and a couple of failed novels, Sainte-Beuve began to undertake literary research, of which the most important is Port-Royal, while also contributing to the Revue contemporaine. Sainte-Beuve had vast knowledge, wonderful tact, and acute perception of what was vital and significant in his subjects. A selection of the Causeries in English appeared as English Portraits (New York, 1875) and another as Essays on Men and Women (London, 1890). E. J. Trechmann published a translation (eight volumes, New York, 1909-11). Causeries du lundi was first published between 1851 and 1862. Nouveaux Lundis was first published between 1863 and 1870. These volumes bear the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman. She was the youngest child of Charles Taylor Sherman and Eliza Williams. She was also the neice of the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman and Senator John Sherman. Considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Washington of the late 1870s to early 1880s Elizabeth was romantically linked with the American novelist, journalist and historian Henry Adams. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm with all covers and pages attached, although the front outer hinge of Volume 1 of Causeries is split and in need of repair. There is some wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing to the boards and leather, and a few marks to the spines. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. There are bookplates to the front pastedowns. Overall the volumes are in good onlycondition..

The Patterns in Thumb and Finger Marks; on their Arrangement into naturally distinct Classees, the Permanence of the Papillary Ridges that make them, and the Resemblance of their Classes to ordinary Genera" AND "Methods of indexing Finger Marks" in Proceedings of the Royal Society, Volumes XLVIII (1890) and XLIX (1891)

      - FIRST EDITIONS of Francis Galton's important 1890 and 1891 papers providing a scientific basis and model for fingerprint identification and analysis, offered here in separate leather bound volumes. Galton provides a detailed statistical model of fingerprint analysis and identification and encourages its use; the exhaustive statistical models he provides proved enough to encourage law enforcement to begin to use fingerprints and courts to then sanction that use. The first paper is an 'Abstract' of a paper appearing in the Transactions in the same year. The second paper is a first edition, first printing. The papers can be viewed as the basis for his Galton's "Finger-Prints" of 1892 (Printing and the Mind of Man 376). Galton was able to establish that human fingerprints were remarkably stable from early youth to advanced age, even to after death. They changed size with growth, but (with one small exception) they did not change in their minutia. He described and classified described and classified fingerprints into eight broad categories. 1. plain arch, 2. tented arch, 3. simple loop, 4. central pocket loop, 5. double loop, 6. lateral pocket loop, 7. plain whorl, and 8. accidental. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison & Sons. Two complete volumes. 8vo. 8.5 by 5.5 inches (213 x 138mm). Volume XLVIII: 535 pages, [ xxviii], Galton pp. 455-457; Volume XLIX: 558 pages, [xxxii], Galton pp. 540-548. Illustrations: Two tables and two figures pertaining to the 1891 Galton paper. Exterior: Handsomely bound in worn half calf over marbled paper boards. Five raised bands at the spine. Spine labels are missing.         Caesar Cascabel

New York: Cassell Publishing Company, 1890. First American Edition. Cloth. Very Good. George Roux. George Roux. First American Edition. iv, 373 pages. 8vo. (6 x 8 3/8 inches; 15 x 21.3 centimeters) Publisher's olive green binding with black and gilt pictorial embossed decorations. Minor wear at the corners and extremities. Small stain affecting frontis, title page and a few pages afterward. Two signatures proud, just starting to loosen up. A touch of browning throughout. Still pleasing face out or on the shelf. Cloth. "The list of books that will be appropriate Christmas presents is long and tempting ... Jules Verne's new work, to be entitled 'Caesar Cascabel', will be a stout octavo, profusely illustrated, describing a travelling show consisting of the hero, an acrobat and his family, together with horses, dogs, parrots and mokeys, who traverse the American Continent and go back to France by land and ice via American Russia." Taves and Michaluk further note an oddity - Cassell copyrighted this work long after it was offered for sale. Originally advertised as costing $3.00, it was released at $2.50. Myers notes an example in pictorial blue cloth. Colleagues have seen this book in other colors (including the olive green noted here), with no priority yet established. The first English edition was by Sampson Low, Marston & Co. in 1891. The plates are printed on one side only (later Cassell editions the illustrations were printed back to back to save costs). Bleiler (1948), p. 273. Myers 7. Taves and Michaluk V037.
