Manuscript Plan - Large Outline of Temple of Confucius

China, 1890. China, circa 1890-1910. Manuscript Plan of the Temple Confucius at Qufu in Shandong, with title and inscriptions in Mandarin. Hand drawn on rice paper, with black painted background, mounted on linen, measuring approximately 116 x 54 cm. Minor loss at some folds and extremities, otherwise in very good condition. Rare Manuscript Plan - Magnificent Temple of Confucius in Qufu. An uncommon and charming example of Chinese art made by a knowledgeable native Chinese historian or Confucian, numerous inscriptions on the plan identify gates, pavillions and great halls, which, erected by several successive dynasties, commemorates China's most venerated leader. Detailed imagery further show Guardian Lion statues, the Ming-era wall enclosure and river near its entrance. The Temple of Confucius in Qufu, Shandong Province of China, is the "original", largest, and most famous of the Temples of Confucius in China and East Asia. The temple complex spans 16,000 square metres and contains over 460 rooms, including temples, shrines, monuments, and pavilions. The principle section consists of 9 courtyards arranged on a central axis. The southernmost gate is named "Lingxing Gate" after a star in the Great Bear constellation; the name suggests that Confucius is a star from heaven. The Drum Tower (Gulou) is in the center of the walled city. The large ceremonial hall contains a large statue of Confucius surrounded by statues of his disciples. Following are the main structures of the temple: Lingxing Gate Shengshi Gate Hongdao Gate Dazhong Gate Thirteen Stele Pavilions Dacheng Gate Kuiwen Hall (built in 1018, restored in 1504 during the Ming Dynasty and in 1985) Xing Tan Pavilion (Apricot Platform) De Mu Tian Di Arch Liangwu Dacheng Hall (built in the Qing Dynasty) Resting Hall (dedicated to Confucius' Wife) The temple complex is situated at the heart of Qufu, and honours the revered Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher, Confucius (Kongfuzi, Kongzi). The historical center of Qufu, it is surrounded by the restored Ming-era city wall enclosure and rivers or moats, around which the town of Qufu grew. Within two years of Confucius' death in in 479BC, his former home was consecrated as a temple by the Prince of Lu. In 205 BC, Emperor Gao of the Han Dynasty was the first emperor to offer sacrifices to the memory of Confucius in Qufu. Enlarged over the centuries, the 50-acre temple complex boasts a grandeur similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing, with striking red walls and yellow glazed roof tiles (a colour normally preserved for the emperor). The original three-room house of Confucius was removed from the temple complex during a rebuilding undertaken in 611 AD. In 1012 and in 1094, during the Song Dynasty, the temple was extended into a design with three sections and four courtyards, around which eventually more than 400 rooms were arranged. Fire and vandalism destroyed the temple in 1214, during the Jin Dynasty. It was restored to its former extent by the year 1302 during the Yuan Dynasty. Shortly thereafter, in 1331, the temple was framed in an enclosure wall modelled on the Imperial palace. After another devastation by fire in 1499, the temple was restored to its present scale. In 1724, yet another fire largely destroyed the main hall and the sculptures it contained. The subsequent restoration was completed in 1730. Lying on the outskirts of the temple enclosure is an elaborate complex of buildings which formed the residence of Confucius?'s descendants, the Kong family. Through the centuries the Kongs were the guardians of the temple complex and also administrators of the town of Qufu. Lying outside the north gate of the temple enclosure is the family cemetery which contains the tomb of Confucius.. Very Good.

A Descriptive handbook of modern water-color pigments

1890. TAYLOR, J. Scott. A Descriptive Handbook of Modern Water-colour Pigments. [viii], 71, 1 pp. Illustrated with 5 ff. of mounted samples of colour washes containing 120 samples. 8vo, bound in original printed cloth wrappers. London: Winsor & Newton, ND [ca 1890]. Originally published in 1887 with only three plates. In this edition the number of colour samples has been expanded to 120. This is an important book as it contains named colour samples; R. D. Harley lists only ten such books before 1887 and several of these are unique manuscripts (Artists' Pigments, pp. 179-181). J. S. Taylor was a research chemist for Winsor & Newton in the late 19th century. The present work is the final entry on Harley's list; she notes that it contains "several varieties of madder lake, vermillion, ultra marine and sepia, cadmiums, chromes and mars colors, oxide of chromium, viridian and emerald green and quercitron lake under various names such as yellow lake and gallstone." The introduction discusses the recent water-colour controversy. Wrappers are worn at edges.

        Repertoire Chromatique

1890. LACOUTURE, Charles. Répertoire chromatique, solution raisonée et pratique des problèmes les plus usuels dans l'étude et l'emploi des couleurs. xi, 144 pp., [2] ff. Illustrated with 29 chromolithographic plates, including frontispiece with printed tissue guard, a few text diagrams. Includes a transparent overlay and printed card screen. Large 4to., 325 x 250 mm., bound in publisher's green cloth. Uncut and unopened. Paris: Gauthier-Villars et fils, 1890.|~| |~||~||~||~| First Edition of this rare treatise on colour theory by the French botanist Charles Lacouture (1832-1908), Professor of Natural History at Metz. Dedicated to the memory of the greatest colour theorist of the 19th century, Michel-Eugène Chevreul, Lacouture's Répertoire is an attempt to resolve the practical problems posed by the mixing of colours. In his introduction the author explains that Chevreul's important achievements in the classification of colours have not been translated into usable knowledge for artists, artisans and manufacturers, a gap he proposes to close in the present work, by simplifying and completing Chevreul's theory. Ideally suited to chromolithographic reproduction, Lacouture's method uses the three primary colours to create all hues, not by changing the tint of the ink, but by varying the thickness and number of parallel or intersecting lines. The Répertoire is illustrated, as announced in the sub-title, by 29 chromolithographs representing 952 different hues, grouped in over 600 degrees of saturation ("gammes"). The frontispiece displays a 12-petalled diagram called a "rose synoptique," in which each section is keyed to one of the colour plates by a diagram on the printed tissue guard; a second preliminary plate (numbered "1bis") displays Lacouture's "trilobe synoptique," which permits a comparative view of the colours and shows how the different colours are produced by the systematically varied mixture of red, yellow and blue. In January 1891 Lacouture's monograph was honored with a Gold Medal by the Société Industrielle du Nord de la France, as stated on a printed paper label tipped to the front flyleaf. An unusual note on each of the plates advises the reader to close the book when finished in order to protect the plates from light. The delicate wrappers have some wear including a bit of loss at the foot of the spine, still a very nice copy. This is a scarce treatise: Worldcat locates three copies in American institutions.

The Picture of Dorian Gray [in] Lippincott's Monthly Magazine

Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company 1890, 1890. FIRST EDITION. The first printing of the complete novel. The sheets of the magazine were printed in America and issued simultaneously in America by Lippincott and in London by Ward, Lock. The first edition in book form was published in April 1891, which featured a substantially altered text, including the addition of six new chapters. This original magazine is slightly worn to the spine with some small patches of loss, wrappers slightly worn with a corners of loss to the rear panel, a very good copy indeed in a tailor made blue cloth slipcase and chemise. Fragile paper a little tired at corners otherwise a fine survival of a scarce and fragile item. The unforgettable dark and brooding chiller set in high-society late-Victorian London; a coded and epigrammatic melodrama inspired by Wilde's own tortured homosexuality. Mason [81-82, 332].         The Special Commission Act, 1888

George Edward Wright London 1890 - The Special Commission Act, 1888      Published by George Edward Wright;- London 1890;- Report of the Proceedings Before the Commissioners Appointed by the Act;- 4 Volume set, in very fine condition;- 1st. Edition of this special report. Reprinted from the Times of London. The Parnell Commission was a judicial inquiry in the late 1880s into allegations of crimes by Irish parliamentarian Charles Stewart Parnell which resulted in his vindication. On 6 May 1882 two leading members of the British Government in Ireland, Chief Secretary for Ireland Lord Frederick Cavendish and the Permanent Under-Secretary for Ireland T.H. Burke were stabbed to death in Phoenix Park, Dublin by the Irish National Invincibles In March 1887, The Times published a series of articles, "Parnellism and Crime", in which Home Rule League leaders were accused of being involved in murder and outrage during the land war. The Times produced a number of facsimile letters, allegedly bearing Parnell's signature and in one of the letters Parnell had excused and condoned the murder of T.H. Burke in the Phoenix Park. In particular the newspaper had paid £1,780 for a letter supposedly written by Parnell to Patrick Egan, a Fenian activist, that included: "Though I regret the accident of Lord F Cavendish's death I cannot refuse to admit that Burke got no more than his deserts" and was signed "Yours very truly, Charles S. Parnell". On the day it was published (18 April 1887), Parnell described the letter in the House of Commons as "a villainous and barefaced forgery.” Also on 18 April the Perpetual Crimes Act had its second reading and debate in the Commons. It appeared to Nationalists that it was more than coincidental that the Times article on the letter was published on the same day, and was obviously intended to sway the debate. This Commission has been described as the forerunner of the modern tribunal of enquiry. In 1887 The Times newspaper published serious allegations Concerning Charles Stewart Parnell, then leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party in the House of Commons. The allegations were based on a series of letters said to be by Parnell, which later turned out to be forgeries. Parnell demanded a Parliamentary inquiry which was refused, although at a later enquiry Parnell was vindicated and the letters revealed to be fakes. A very Scarce/Rare 4 volume set of books in a dark navy blue full leather binding, with red labels to all four volumes, with gilt lettering within. Marble edging also to all four volumes.         Les chants de Maldoror

Rare second edition in trade, and the first French edition, one of 150 unnumbered copies on vellum, one draw with 10 japan. First edition of the famous preface Genonceaux on Lautréamont, frontispiece Jose Roy (regular cartoonist licentious works) showing a flayed skin to earth, wandering in the catacombs, a facsimile of a letter from the author 1870 . The original 1869 was never published by Lacroix, who had pledged to edit; only ten copies were stapled and delivered to the author. In 1874 another Belgian publisher, Rozez, resumed the background and edited with a title page relays. The title glory Genonceaux was without doubt have edited the Chants de Maldoror, with a real desire to make it known. After editing, he published several excerpts in newspapers: Fin de siècle (14 February 1891) and The Black Cat (12 December 1891). His preface is the result of a serious investigation, which is why it violently rejects allegations of Léon Bloy on the author. Genonceaux providing a charge of indecency, which actually took place in 1892, leaving his publishing house after editing Shrine of Rimbaud. Literature vertigo at the limit of sustainable, the excessive teenager, a total darkness, the Chants de Maldoror, or the saga of a wandering figure of evil in the world, became famous surrealist who made a true aesthetic manifesto.         Life of Robert Browning

London: Walter Scott. 1890. First. First edition. Corners a bit bumped, light wear and tear at the spine ends, a couple of light pencil notes in the text in an unknown hand, a sound and attractive, very good copy. Inscribed by the author: "To Miss Agnes Hall from her friend The Author. Rome 1890-91." With the bookplate of Radclyffe Hall and her companion Una Troubridge. An interesting copy. We could find little of Agnes Hall but that she was a correspondent of W.B. Yeats. How the book transferred from Agnes Hall to Radclyffe Hall and Troubridge is unknown. Sharp embodied some feminine consciousness of his own, writing several books under the pseudonym, Fiona MacLeod. .

1890. Literary Reminiscences, Methods of Work, and Advice to Young Beginners, personally contributed by Leading Authors of the Day. Compiled and Edited by George Bainton. London: James Clarke & Co., 1890. 8 pp ads dated "1/6/90". Original royal blue cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Edition of this compendium of advice on becoming an author, by the leading writers of the day. Henty's contribution is on pages 19-21; he ends with:~My advice to boys who want to become authors is this: Write a story and get some person in whose judgment you have confidence to give you his opinion frankly whether there is any promise in it. If he says no, give the thing up altogether. If he says yes, and you really feel that you have a talent for telling stories, and find that your stories are liked by your schoolfellows, then write, and write, and write. Burn all you write, for until you are two or three and twenty you will certainly not write anything worth reading...~This copy is fine except for some cracking of the rear endpaper -- and is quite a scarce book, especially in this condition.
