The Poetical Works and Other Writings

London: Reeves & Turner, 1883 [and 1890]. Five volumes, including supplement, 8vo. 366 + 573 + 387 + 493 + 201 pp. Original decorated cloth. Front joint of vol. 1 split, other handling wear. THEODORE WATTS-DUNTON'S ANNOTATED COPY. This set bears Watts-Dunton's bookplate and is extensively annotated by him. There are 202 pages that have annotations for a total of 8521 words. Twenty-one pages have a hundred or more words of pencil notes on them. The English critic and poet Watts-Dunton (1832-1914) was closely aligned with many of the great poets and writers of his day, including Rossetti, George Borrow, William Morris, Swinburne, and Tennyson. Swinburne came to "The Pines" in 1879 and lived there with Watts-Dunton until his death in 1909. Watts-Dunton is credited with curing Swinburne of his alcoholism. "But it was not only in his published work that Mr Watts-Dunton's influence on the literary life of his time was potent. His long and intimate association with Rossetti and Swinburne made him, no doubt, a unique figure in the world of letters; but his own grasp of metrical principle and of the historic perspective of the glories of English poetry made him, among the younger generation, the embodiment of a great tradition of literary criticism which could never cease to command respect" (Enc. Brittanica, 1911).

        Wood type

1890 - An assortment of over 200 pieces of wooden type, including two large indexes shaped like pointing hands, a dial with numbers 0 through 9, over 70 ornaments and fancy brackets, 25 corner pieces, and an array of borders in different patterns and lengths. The first wood type catalogue was published by Darius Wells in March 1828 to meet the need for large, cheap type for broadsides; wood was the perfect material, being half the cost of metal type, lightweight, and with a smooth, even surface. Many other manufactories joined the market, the most noted being William H. Page, Vanderburgh, and Hamilton. The type in this set comes from a few different sources. One large hand and many of the extension dashes and stars can be found in the Morgans & Wilcox catalogue for 1890. The other hand is from the William H. Page catalogue from 1878. Several more pieces, such as the wooden pointers, can be seen in a Hamilton Manufacturing catalogue from 1899. An interesting set illustrating the history of printing, in fine condition.

The Nursery Alice. With text adapted to nursery readers.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1890 - Small quarto. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in red morocco, decorations to boards gilt, two raised bands, titles to spine gilt, with inset coloured onlay to front cover replicating the frontispiece, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Some light spotting and browning to a few leaves otherwise an excellent copy in a fine binding. Contains 20 coloured enlargements from Tenniel's illustrations to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". First published edition. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title, "For Margery, from the author, Mar. 25 1890." The original printing of this condensed version of Alice was discarded by Dodgson in much the same way as its 1865 predecessor. Five hundred copies were sent for issue in the USA but even these were apparently destroyed. This 1890 printing exists in at least three states, the present example with "Price Four Shillings" on the title page being the earliest. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Bartholomew's New Hand Map of Central Africa, Showing the Route & Discoveries of Stanley's Expedition, (London: Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1890), separately issued and untraced in libraries. David Stewart (1835-1919), a wealthy industrialist, was provost of Aberdeen from 1889 to 1894. During Stanley's visit he was awarded the Freedom of the City and delivered a lecture at the recently inaugurated branch of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, where "imperial and commercial interests were more to the fore [than in the Edinburgh branch, where scientific motives predominated] … In Aberdeen especially, interest in having a branch of the society was particularly prompted by Free Church of Scotland ministers and others with missionary interests in Africa" (Withers, Geography, Science and National Identity: Scotland since 1520, p. 201). T Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered Ottoman governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha, who proved singularly resistant to being "rescued", his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for his mission came under suspicion with the quick proliferation of accounts by other members of the expedition, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. In the course of the journey Stanley met Roger Casement, then in service on the Congo, discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. In Darkest Africa was quickly translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch, while sales of the English trade editions reached 150,000 copies. Despite this, presentation copies of the trade issue are strikingly uncommon.
