ARCHIVE OF 237 ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPHS, TAKEN BY WRIGHT TO DOCUMENT HIS CIRCA-1890 VOYAGES BY SAILBOAT AND PEREGRINATIONS ON FOOT, ALONG THE NEW JERSEY COAST AND UP THE HUDSON RIVER; Intended to document his unpublished (and unknown) manuscript, "Out of the Beaten Track."

Norristown, PA, 1890. Original photograph album. Portfolios. Very Good. The 237 finely executed albumen photographs (each measuring about 3 by 4 inches) are neatly mounted on rectos of 37 large quarto leaves (very heavy stock boards, measuring 14 by 11 inches). The 37 leaves are housed in two custom paper chemises, each titled in Crosby M. Wright's neat ink holograph: "234 [237] Pictures Taken for OUT OF THE BEATEN TRACK by Crosby M. Wright...." Included are: views of the Monmouth Beach Lifesaving Station and crew; fishing fleets; a captured white whale; ice harvesting; an offshore shipwreck; drying fish; spinning and weaving; views of the Jersey Shore and Atlantic City lighthouses; windmills; canal locks; local characters and children; numerous views of the New Jersey coast; &c. ~~ Moving up the Hudson River... Depicted in one photograph is a man in snowshoes. Several images include Dutch houses (based on roof lines) and Dutch barns. Images of two or more windmills might suggest Staten Island or somewhere up the Hudson River. The long wooden bridge in one view might be across the Hudson. Several canal locks and barges are shown (Delaware and Raritan Canal? Morris Canal?). Several views show low falls in a river, possibly the Delaware River, a bit above Trenton. The ice-harvesting images could be from New Jersey or Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River. Views of people living in cabins reflect the 1890s era of life along waterways in the eastern states. ~~ On the whole, the 237 photographs, mounted on 37 numbered boards, are in excellent condition, with sharp focus and good contrast. Although a few photos have faded over time, most of them represent an impressive production by a skilled 19th-century photographer and adventurer. The photographer, Crosby Morton Wright, was a wealthy amateur. He was born January 12, 1847 to Ellen E. and William M. Wright. In the 1867-68 Philadelphia Directory, Crosby is listed as a plumber living at 509 S. 9th Street. By 1880, the city directory lists Crosby M. Wright as living at 1419 Arch Street, without an occupation. In the 1892 city directory, Crosby is again listed as living at 1419 Arch Street with no occupation. In the 1880s and 1890s the family also appears in Philadelphia's Blue Book. Crosby's father dies between 1892 and 1893 when his mother Ellen is listed in the directory as the widow of William and living with Crosby M. at 1419 Arch Street. By 1910, Crosby has married Fanny D, a woman 22 years his junior, and has a daughter. He lives at 2405 Bryn Mawr Avenue in Philadelphia with his family, a cook, a gardener, and a housekeeper. Under "occupation," the census-taker wrote "own income." No occupation is listed for Crosby in the 1920 census. He died on August 11th of that year, and is buried at Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd.

Photograph Album of Tresco, Isles of Scilly

1890. nd c1880-1890.nd c1880-1890Hand written title page in ink "Isles of Scilly". 40 large format photographs, some 8x10 inches(203mm x 254mm) and others 6x8 inches(152mm x 203mm). + 5pp snapshots All sepia. Foxing to mounts and some browning to these all but the first two images unaffected by foxing. Late nineteenth century album rebound in modern cloth preserving original album spine. New end papers. Overall 80% of images are sharp, 20% have some fading but in all cases the interest and quality of the compositions is very good. The images comprise the house and gardens at Tresco Abbey including 2 striking 8x10 inch (203mm x 254mm) interiors of the house, further interiors and exteriors of one of the green houses, the ornamental grounds with subtropical plants including Yucca's and setting. Yet other images document social history aspects of the island. These document working life, daffodil fields, commercial flowers and fishing. Others concentrate on leisure pursuits including tennis + rowing. The sea is always present. 18 of the images are attributable to the the Gibsons and 8 to John Valentine but others have no attribution. The album includes two images of the contemporary ferry, possibly the Little Western. As well as an image of Cromwell's Castle, built after the 1651 conquest of the Scilly Isles it is one of the few surviving Cromwellian fortifications in Britain. Also excellent images record the unique coastal geology of Peninnis Head (Southern most point of saint Mary's) and Round Island Lighthouse designed by William Tregathen Douglass for Trinity House, completed in 1887. These images also give a fascinating insight into period dress. A rare insight into the social history, architecture, geology and horticulture of a unique island at at time when the proprietors of the Scilly's was Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien-Smith of Tresco Abbey.

In Darkest Africa or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria

London: Sampson, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, 1890. First edition, edition de luxe, number 199 of 250 copies signed by Henry Stanley. Original half black morocco over vellum, top edges gilt, 2 volumes. Two steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, two photogravure plates on India paper, mounted, 36 wood-engraved plates on India, mounted, 6 etchings by M.G. Montbard signed by the artist in pencil, 4 coloured maps and plans; the 2 larger folding maps mounted on linen. In very good condition with some light rubbing to the extremities. From the library of Livingstone bibliographer Frank Bradlow, with his tasteful bookplate to the front panel. A nice example with noted provenance. Stanley and Emin entered Bagamoyo on their donkeys, some way ahead of their caravan, on 4 December, 1889. It was sensational news. Emin was safe, although the expedition to relieve him had cost the lives of at least 700 people. With the good journalist's facility for rapid reporting, Stanley began his account of the rescue at the Hotel Victoria, Cairo, on 25 January 1890, working on it continuously for fifty days at the rate of 20 printed pages per day. The first portion of the manuscript was delivered to the printer's on 12 March and the last proof sheet returned for printing by Clowes on 3 June. Hosken p. 189

Autograph letter signed "P Mascagni" to an unidentified impresario in Vienna, addressed "Mio Caro."

Mascagni, distinguished as both a composer and conductor, is perhaps best-known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana, which "was enormously successful from its first performance at the Costanzi in Rome in 1890. From then on Mascagni spent the rest of his long career treating a wide variety of subjects. His next opera, L'amico Fritz (1891), consolidated his success with Roman audiences, and revealed his lyrical vein. This fluent rustic comedy was successful particularly because melodic vitality - the outstanding merit of Cavalleria - was combined with a more elegant harmonic idiom." By the time this letter was written, Mascagni had also garnered considerable acclaim in Vienna, Paris, and London. Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online.. 2 pp. Quarto. Dated Rome, October 8, [1]908. In black ink. On stationery with "Corso Vitt. Eman. 154. Telefono Interprov. 458. Per telegrammi: Mascagni, Roma" printed in red at upper left. In Italian (with translation). Mascagni responds to a proposal to write a "true and authentic" operetta. He likes the idea, but would encounter difficulties "of the moral-artistic order," and especially with his publishers, Choudens and Sonzogno. As indicated by his use of "tu," Mascagni and his correspondent were on familiar terms. "But there is still a material difficulty, represented in my contracts with the publishers Sonzogno in Milan and Choudens in Paris, who will not want to adjust [their contracts] if they knew I worked for an impresario from Vienna before having delivered (as per contract) the operas that I must write for them... As you've seen I haven't spoken of monetary interests... but profits have never been a difficulty for the closing of my [business] deals." Slightly worn; creased at folds. Together with: A postcard photograph of 5 gentlemen on a street corner dated Paris 1911 on mount: Mascagni, the music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno, the writer Gabriele d'Annunzio and two unidentified others.

A Boy's Town, Described for "Harper's Young People", (with Autograph Letter Signed Tipped In )

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. Autograph Letter Signed, a single page of green stationery folded, writing one side, tipped in at front endpage and dated May 21, 1894- "40 West 54th St. My dear Ropes, I have sent you a copy of Literature(?) where you will find an ? ? story of the Civil War in a poem(?) of mine. I went to the book in order to compare the fighting in it with the fighting in the innumerable stories of the Spanish war; but I remained to wonder of the monumental work which you have performed. To a mind like mine ( I hardly dare call it a mind ) in the presence of such profoundness as yours, it is inconceivable that you should have mastered all that detail and the grasp with which you hold it and present it is so clearly, so profoundly, simply ?? one. You can justly find that you've written the history of our battles in the great war in such a way that it could not be written again. We are going to Kittery Point for the summer and I hope to see you. W.D. Howells" . John Codman Ropes (1836-1899) was an American military historian, author, and lawyer.         [Album Amicorum], from her first concert tour of South America, 1875-77

filled with autograph tributes(many of several pages), poem (some incorporating drawings) , and letters including those from important authors and educators of South America. This album reflects her first major concert tour through Argentina, Uruguay, Panama, Peru, Mexico, Chile, and Cuba, and also Charleston, South Carolina; Saratoga, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A few European entries are contained as well. This album will be especially useful for those who wish to know more about the South American travels of this child prodigy (who was barely a teenager) and about her reception among the cultural elite. Oblong quarto (13 x 11”; 330 x 280mm). Bound in rose-colored moire silk, embroidered with flowers. In the center is an oval bearing the embroidered name “Esmeralda.” Brown morocco spine (probably later); doublures in gold silk, ruled in gold. Manuscript table of contents at end. Manuscript album on 146 numbered pages (29 are unused) consisting of 79 letters, drawings, and tributes, some multi-page. Very good condition, with some paper cracks at gutter margin. The album was assembled with help, perhaps from her mother (d. 1890) who accompanied her on her early trips. Spanish harp prodigy and later feminist educator, Clotilde CerdÅ• i Bosch was the daughter of Barcelona city planner and engineer Ildefons CerdÅ• i Sunyer (1815-1876)* and the painter Clotilde Bosch. Gifted in the arts from her earliest years, she was sent to Rome to study painting with Mariano Fortuny. Soon, however, it became apparent that music was her gift. At the age of 13 in 1873, she debuted at the Imperial Court Theatre in Vienna with her first harp concert. The stage name Esmeralda Cervantes was created to differentiate Clotilde from her artist mother. Anecdotes have that her name was suggested by Victor Hugo, after the gypsy hero Esmeralda of Notre-Dame de Paris (Clotilde was friends with Hugo, and also composers Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner); other stories hold that the Isabella II, Queen of Spain, suggested the name. According to a long biography in the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, Cervantes was politically active, especially in her effort to provide training for urban, educated women who had no marketable skills and, as a result, could not earn a living (May 31, 1964, p. 47). From 1880 to 1881, she attempted to create an educational center specifically for women with the aim of providing education in scientific, creative, and industrial arts. When she returned to Barcelona in 1885, she founded (with Dolors Aleu i Riera) the Academia para la Ilustración de la Mujer, a female high school devoted to the industrial application of sculpture and painting. It was intended to provide training for professional women who could then be hired within industry. In 1887, Cervantes directed the publications El Ángel del Hogar [The Angel in the House] and La Estrella Polar [The Polar Star], both journals about women urbanites. In 1893, at La Exposición Universal de Chicago, she was both soloist and speaker on the cultural situation of Turkish women (she had gone to Turkey to teach the harp to the women in the sultan’s harem). In 1895, she founded the Music Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro and the School of Arpa, with the help of Lea Bach, another Catalan harpist. Esmeralda Cervantes made repeated trips during her life to South America. As a result of her popularity, honors were heaped on her: “Honorary citizen of the Uruguayan republic, decorated with many crosses and medals. Honorary professor of the conservatory of Barcelona, honorary President of the ‘Liceo Esmeralda’ of Spain, of the choral societies enterpe of Montevideo and Esmeralda, Buenos Ayres, of the lyric society La Palma of the hospital oriental, and of the benevolent society of Buenos Ayres. . . She was honorary member of the philharmonic society of Brazil and La Lyra of Montevideo, of the literary and union clubs of Lima, of the benevolent societies Damas de Beneflcencia, Sociedad de Caridad, hospital Espanol and Sociedad de 3 Miseriecordia, of Buenos Ayres . . .” and many others (Daily Saratogian, July 20, 1876, p. 3). This elaborate album has meticulously collected a host of tributes (in many cases long poems that were written by those who witnessed her performances). Interestingly, the writers were often important educators, politicians, and authors of South America, as well as Spanish-speaking authors of the United States, whom she met during her trip. The album, therefore, is an important record of the intelligentsia who gathered to watch Cervantes’ performances during her travels. Among the longer or more elaborate entries are those from the following: Alfonso, Luis (1845-1892). Author: Noticia del Certamen Universal de Filadelfia en 1876 (Madrid: Peroj, 1878) (p. 68); Bernat, Pedro A. Author: Ensayos Poéticos (Montevideo: La EspaÅ„a, 1890), Los Futuros Ciudadanos (Montevideo: Bernat, 1876) (p. 35); Castro y Martinez, Manuel. She wrote six novels of social content and critical intent; the most successful of these were Blanca Sol (1888), Las consecuencias (1890), and El conspirador (1892). She also wrote numerous articles and essays on literary and social topics which were published in Peruvian newspapers. She specially advocated the emancipation of women and was one of the first Peruvian feminists. (N.p., 1876; p. 53); López Montenegro, José. In 1869, he directed The Republican Zaragoza and was influenced by anarchism, so he was expelled from the army and imprisoned for refusing to swear allegiance the new king, Amadeo. In May of 1871, he left prison and founded the Fraternity casino workers and participated in its congress in Zaragoza in 1872. He returned to Spain in 1881 and settled in Sabadell and Sallent, where he worked as a teacher and directed the newspaper Los Disinherited (1884-1886).

Rudolf Emil Denhardt (* 24. März 1845 in Burgsteinfurt; ¿ 24. In seinem 1890 erschienenen Buch ¿Das Stottern. How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Cloth-backed illustrated paper over boards, gilt-stamped lettering on spine; with frontispiece and 42 illustrations. With laid-in letter, handwritten and signed by Riis. Scuffed at spine tips and along edges of boards; a few light water-spots and some soiling on upper board. Appropriately worn. A ground-breaking work for the social reformer and journalist, this volume is not just important for its subject matter, but also for its presentation of that subject. Riis was an early experimenter with flash photography, which allowed him to capture the dark alleys and hidden rooms of New York City's most desperate slums. By rendering Riis's photographs as line drawings, "How the Other Half Lives" represents the first extenisve use of photographic reproduction for a book. Riis became one of the most important political figures in America -- a model of the Danish immigrant made good, with personal access to Theodore Roosevelt and the middle classes and upper eschelons on New York City. A complex character, his concerns about poverty stemmed less from romantic philanthropism, and more from his pragmatic opinions on the importance of environment, that "squalid homes make squalid people."

        Hustak och kyrktorn i Genua.

Akvarell. Signerad och daterad: "W. v. Gegerfelt / Genua 1890". 31,5 × 18 cm. Vacker akvarell med välbevarade färger. Proveniens: Beijers klassiska vårauktion, 25-27 april 1990 (katalog 40), nr 374 (utrop 20,000 kr.).
