Monographie der baltischen Bernsteinbäume. Vergleichende Untersuchungen über die Vegetationsorgane und Blüten, sowie über das Harz und die Krankheiten der baltischen Bernsteinbäume.

Danzig, Naturforschende Gesellschaft, 1890. - Large 4to (32.5 : 26.5 cm). (8), 151 p., 18 plates, all but one lithographed in colours, with 1 leaf of explanation each. First edition. The 19th century saw three great and nowadays scarce monographs on amber inclusions. The earliest was Berendt?s ?Die im Bernstein befindlichen Reste der Vorwelt?, 1845-56, followed by ?Flora des Bernsteins? by Goeppert, Menge and Conwentz, 1883-86. The third and most significant is the present book. Based on histological studies of wood inclusions Conwentz undertakes a comprehensive description and a classification of the resinous tree generating Baltic amber deposits. His extinct species Pinus succinifera remained valid until the late 20th century. Most of the highly finished plates show microscopic images of thin sections. Plate XV pictures whole but abnormally altered pieces of amber. - Conwentz (1855-1922) used the rich amber collection of the Westpreußisches Provinzial-Museum Danzig which he directed from its foundation in 1879 until 1910. The natural history section of the museum went back to the cabinet of the Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Danzig founded in 1743. In 1880 the zoologist Anton Menge bequeathed his private collection of amber inclusions. - This copy belonged to the library of the botanist Eduard Strasburger, the founder of modern plant cell biology (1844-1912). His legacy stamp and a subsequent stamp of the Bonn botanical institute (where Strasburger worked from 1881) on title-page; both cancelled. - Stafleu & Cowan, no. 1192. - Binding a bit rubbed, hinges strongly. A clean copy. Contemporary black paste paper boards with red spine label, spine ends and corners stiffened with vellum. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Photograph album. Egypt and Switzerland.

Egypt and Switzerland., [1880s-1890s]. - 4to (295 x 235 mm). 50 photographs of Egypt (albumen prints and cyanotypes), and approximately 40 albumen prints of Switzerland. Impressively presented series of original photographs taken at various important sites and cities in Egypt, including Giza, Thebes, Karnak, Luxor, Abydos, Esna etc. The photographs show archaeological sites like the temple of Seti I at Abydos, the precinct of Ahmen-Rah near Luxor, the avenue of Sphinxes at Karnak, the Ramesseum and the Colossi at Thebes, the temple of Khnum at Esna, the Sphinx and pyramids of Giza and many more. Other photographs show the local population, doing a wide variety of activities, such as catching crocodiles on the nile, a Luxor barber shaving the head of a sailor, or a Bedouin camp in the Libyan Desert. - The Istanbul-based Sebah studio catered to the Western European interest in the exotic "Orient" and the growing numbers of tourists visiting the Muslim world who wished to take home images of the city, ancient ruins in the surrounding area, portraits, and local people in traditional costumes. "Sebah rose to prominence because of his well-organized compositions, careful lighting, effective posing, attractive models, great attention to detail, and for the excellent print quality" (Gary Saretzky, Photo history). Jean Sebah (1876-1947) took over the studio from his father Pascal after his death and signed his productions "J. P. Sebah" on the negative, putting his initial in front of his father's. - Some spotting and fading. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        38 views of Paris]

1890s. 1890 - Albumen photographs ca 21 x 26- 27 cm. Card board supports 42 x 33 cm Beautiful high quality views of Paris executed during "La belle époque". Six of them are interiors. 28 of the 38 photos are marked X, or N. D. or N.D. Ph. which are the signatures of the Neurdein fréres (Neurdein brothers). It is unclear who executed the remaining 10 photos. Étienne and Louis Antonin Neurdein worked togehter from 1887 to 1915 under the name Neurdein fréres and became one of the leading firms in Paris. Their photos are of first rate quality and includes portraits, french and foreign views, monuments, architecture, ethnographica (women of Bretagne and North Africa), art reproductions and cabinet cards. Many of their views have roof tops as vantage points, to be able to separate the respective building from its surroundings. Some examples of that technique can be found in the present collection. The Neurdein fréres were probably the first to publish illustrated post cards in France in 1889, the Eiffel tower among other motifs, and became one of the biggest players in that area. Their 1900 catalogue encompassed 500 pages, and their production reached 40.000 glas negatives. The firm played an important role as documenters of contemporary France and were members of Société francaise de photographie and Chambre syndicale de la photographie. In1898 the firm won the concession to administer and develop the photo archive of the french state - Service des monuments historiques. The Neurdein fréres were awarded at several exhibitions, among them the World Fairs in Paris in 1889 and 1900. In the 1920s the firm merged with the rival firm Lévy and continued by the name Lévy et Neurdein réunis. The photos by the Neurdein fréres in the present collection are: Le Boulevard de la Madelaine, La Collone de la Place Vendome, Perspective de la Place du carrousel des Tuileries et des Champs-Èlysées, La Foyer de Opera, La Cathedrale (Eglise Notre-Dame), L Église de la Madeleine, Jardin du Luxembourg Fountain de Médicis, Bois de Boulogne - Le Grand Lac, Le Noveau Louvre, La Place de la Concorde, Le Pont d Iéna et le Palais du Trocadero, Palais du Louvre la Colonade, Panorama de la Rue Rivoli et de Jardin des Tuileries, Monument éléve à mémoire de Gambatta (Groupe principal), Les Halles Centralon, La Tour-Saint-Jaques, La Fountaine Saint Michel, La Sainte Chapelle et la Palais de Justice, Vue sur la Seine prise du pont des Invalides, Statue de la Republique, Le Panthéon, Le Palais du Luxembourg, Chapelle basse de la Sainte-Chapelle, Musée du Louvre - la Galerie du Apollon, Boulevard de (?) Grand Hotel, Colonne commémorative des journées de Juillet 1830, Interieur de la Sainte Chapelle le Reliquaire and one photo with unreadable text. The photos with unindentified photographer are: Arc-de-Triomphe, Theátre de l Opera, Avenue des Champs-Elysées, Eglise Notre-Dame, Dome des Invalides, Perspectives de l Avenue des Champs-Elysées vue prise de l Árc de Triomphe, Facade de l Eglise Notre-Dame, Le Escalier du Grand Opera, Tombeau de Napoleon 1er and two photos with unreadable text. All the card board supports have an identical decorative border, probably standard issue boards used by several firms. Several card board corners damaged or broken off. A couple of boards with a few centimeter long tear. Slight browning to the boards. The photographs in very nice condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A fine collection of four late 19th century original photographs of scenes in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, [circa 1890]. - 4 albumen prints, 190 x 725 mm and 205 x 270 mm, all mounted on contemporary paper (285 x 40 mm) with manuscript titles in French. "Hong-Kong / Panorama général": a fine, large-scale panorama embracing all of Victoria, the capital of Hong Kong, from the perspective of the harbour. The scene is centred upon the concentration of major buildings along the grand quayside of the Praya, including the City Hall, the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Building and the Hong Kong Hotel, the six-story building featured in the centre-right of the panorama. Notably, the hotel seems to still be in a partially-completed state, as construction of the edifice was not completed until 1892, a detail which helps to date the photograph. Numerous boats can be seen plying the harbour in the foreground, evidence that Hong Kong was one of Asia's busiest ports. Victoria Peak rises above the city, and the thin white line shown ascending the mountain, above City Hall, is the famous Peak Tram. This funicular railway was completed in 1888. - "Hong-Kong / La Rade prise de Bowen Road": an engaging view looking down upon Hong Kong harbour from the perspective of Bowen Road. The line of the celebrated Peak Tram, completed in 1888, is shown running up the slope of Victoria Peak, while numerous ships ply the harbour in the background. Bowen Road was named after George Ferguson Bowen, who served as the 9th Governor of Hong Kong from 1883 to 1885. - "Hong - Kong / Anniversaire de la naissance de la Reine": this fascinating view captures the pageantry of the celebration of the birthday of Queen Victoria. Spectators are shown observing vast lines of troops as they fire an armed salute in honour of Her Majesty, while tall ships decorated with banners are moored in the harbor, in the foreground. Queen Victoria (reigned 1837-1901) personified the British Empire, and her birthday (May 24th) was celebrated annually throughout Britain's colonial possessions. Another example of the same photograph, entitled in manuscript, "Queen's Birthday Parade Hong Kong," can be found in the collections of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (accession no. 86.140.310). - "Hong-Kong / Une Rue dans la ville Chinoise": this photograph captures an interesting street scene in Hong Kong's traditional "Chinatown", otherwise known as the Wan Chai District, located to the east of Victoria. While Victoria had a more "anglicized" appearance, befitting the centre of British colonial administration, Chinese modes of building construction, signage and ways of life prevailed in Wan Chai.

Publisher';s original elaborate vellum 3-D binding mimicking the ocean floor, composed of cast sand embedded with sea shells & sea weed, with a circular medallion attached by thongs with a seal on the underside. Publisher's box with lithographed paper title onlay to lid. Book - Nr Fine to Fine. Inside corners of lid reinforced, right strip of lower box missing, but otherwise this rare box is in very good condition.. Only publication of this tour-de-force of artistic bookmaking, an elaborately illustrated calligraphic diary in rhyming couplets purporting to record Columbus’s dicovery of America. Written to Columbus’s son, Diego, the diary begins with a scrawled note, written amidst a turbulent storm that overtook the Niña on February 14, 1493. The note begs the discoverer of the volume not to disclose its contents and to bring it to the King of Spain. Should anyone doubt the authenticity of this work because it is written in German, Columbus explains in one of the couplets that he wrote the volume in a foreign language in order to further conceal its contents. The extraordinary binding, created to look like the book had been sitting on the ocean floor for centuries, is unlike anything else of the period and is a wonderful bookbinding coup. Artist, author and eccentric designer Karl Maria Seyppel (1847-1913) created several other books of this sort, two alleging to be original Egyptian documents printed on paper replicating papyrus.

Veterans of the Little Big Horn Photograph c.1890

D.F.Barry, Superior, Wisconsin, no date. (c.1890), 1890. First Edition. Not Relevant. Very Good Condition. Photograph of Surviving Members of Custer's 7th Cavalry. An interesting photograph, likely taken during a series of events and speeches marking the ten-year anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn held at Fort Custer in 1886. The picture, taken on the front steps of a large home, shows an ornately dressed officer seated at the centre surrounded by five additional soldiers, eight women, and one male in civilian dress. The man at the centre is likely Lieut. Andrew Nave of the 7th Cavalry. Other identifiable officers are Jonathan Merrill, Capt. S. Barcer, Lieut. Maron and Lieut. Brennan. Among the women is Mrs. J. McDougall, likely the wife of Capt. Thomas McDougall, one of the officers to whom Custer sent desperate messages in his final moments. Thirteen of the subjects and their positions are identified on a small slip of paper accompanying the photograph. While still in residence in Bismark, North Dakota, Barry went to Fort Custer to capture scenes from the large anniversary gathering of veterans of the Little Big Horn. The present picture was likely reproduced from the original plate after Barry settled in Superior, Wisconsin in 1890. The label on the reverse identifies the artist as D.F. Barry. Photographs of ALL noted Indian Chiefs. Photographer. 1812 Tower Ave. Superior, Winsconsin. Barry often made reproductions of earlier works and constant strong sales afford him an influential position in his adopted city. Most popular was his series of Indian Chiefs, including such notables as Chief Gall. Little John, and Sitting Bull. A lovely photograph, from an important western photographer. Superior, Wisconsin. c.1890. 7 x 5 inches. Blindstamped and written attribution in lower portion, contemporary paper label on verso. The B of Barry has passed straight through the print. Clean. Very good. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer; General Custer. Inventory No: 188468. .

The Golden Bough A Study in Comparative Religion

London and New York: Macmillan and Co.,, 1890. In Two Volumes. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spines, mistletoe design to front boards gilt, dark green coated endpapers. Frontispiece to volume I. Contemporary gift inscriptions to first blank of Vol. II. Minor wear to tips, cloth a little rubbed with the odd faint mark, light foxing to endleaves, some pencilled annotations to text, small tear to rear free endpaper. An excellent set. First edition of Frazer's groundbreaking study of comparative religion. "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB).
