        Ein Hungerkünstler (A Hunger Artist)

Berlin and Leipzig: S. Fischer Verlag. 1st Edition. Soft cover, original wrappers. Fine. FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. "One of the most highly regarded literary and cultural journals in the German language, Die neue Rundschau, which is still published today, first appeared in 1890. In Kafka's time it was the major periodical publication of one of the leading German literary presses…it published literary works by some of the most significant authors of the time, including Herman Hesse, Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke. Kafka was a regular reader of Die neue Rundschau throughout his life." After Kafka's submission of "Die Verwandlung" ("The Metamorphosis") was rejected due to its inordinate length, "Kafka was disappointed not to be able to count himself among the authors represented by this respected journal. However he did eventually join their ranks in October 1922, when the story "Ein Hungerkünstler" ("A Hunger Artists") appeared here..." Kafka "indirectly lifted this piece to significant stature in his oeuvre by exempting it from the wish of annihilation that he had decreed for most of his other works. In addition, he chose it as the title story for the last volume of stories that he was able to oversee" (Richard T. Gray, A Franz Kafka Encyclopedia). IN: Die Neue Rundschau, Vol. XXXIII, Band 2, pp. 983-992. Berlin and Leipzig: S. Fischer Verlag, October 1922, pp. 961-1056. Tall octavo, original wrappers; custom silk box. Publisher's advertisements laid-in. A FINE COPY.

The Smith Ely Jelliffe Collection of Medical Offprints (circa 1890-1934)

[New York]. (circa 1890-1934). A large collection of medical offprints and monographs, including bound-in and laid-in correspondence and notes, assembled by the distinguished American physician, author, and editor Smith Ely Jelliffe. A practicing neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst based in New York City, Jelliffe was a pioneer in the emerging field of psychosomatic medicine, and is best known today as the father of psychoanalysis in America. A prolific author and translator, he edited the influential Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease from 1902 to 1944, co-founded the nonorthodox Psychoanalytic Review in 1913, and co-founded and edited the Nervous and Mental Disease Monograph Series. He maintained a close personal and professional correspondence with both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung after their historic break, and several other leading figures throughout the world in both Freudian and Jungian circles. Also a book collector, Jelliffe built up an important private library of books, journals, and offprints which he used for his research and the many translations of the serials that he owned and edited. The collection consists of 204 bound volumes containing well over 8,000 offprints and monographs of European and American works in neuroscience, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, many of which are presentation copies inscribed to Jelliffe. Also included throughout the volumes are many folded large-format journal articles and shorter articles and clippings laid-down on bound-in sheets. The bulk of the papers date from the first quarter of the 20th Century (about 1905-1934). Among the presentation copies are several Inscribed by some of Jelliffe's best known colleagues, including Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, Heinz Hartmann, and Otto Rank; and several other leading international figures such as John H. Northrop (co-winner of the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), the Austrian neurologist Otto Marburg, American neurologist Bernard Sachs, and the American cultural anthropologist Alfred L. Kroeber. Also included are several papers with warm Inscriptions of gratitude from prominent Brazilian colleagues mentored by Jelliffe: Arthur Ramos (an important cultural historian of Brazil's Negro culture), Juliano Moreira and Durval Marcondes (founders of scientific psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Brazil). Other papers that are further illustrative of the diversity and scope of the collection include Traum und Existenz nscribed by the distinguished Swiss psychiatrist and phenomenologist Ludwig Binswanger, and an Inscribed copy of Alfred Korzybski's influential treatise Time-Binding.Most of the papers are in German and English, followed by others in French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and several other languages. Among the German papers are many important papers on psychoanalysis, homosexuality, transvestitism, and transsexualism, including at least eight papers (one Inscribed) by the great German-Jewish psychiatrist Arthur Kronfeld (who studied under Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute of Sexual Research in Berlin), and several early papers by Alfred Adler, Wilhelm Reich, Felix Boehm, and Carl Muller-Braunschweig. Also bound into a few selected volumes are original letters and copies of Jelliffe's accompanying correspondence. These include original letters from two important American physical chemists: Wilder D. Bancroft and Joseph E. Cohn (who was responsible for a blood fractionation project that saved thousands of lives in World War Two). All together the collection roughly divides into the principal subject areas of Jelliffe's professional career: Neurology and the Nervous System (over 50 volumes); Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry (over 20 volumes); Psychoanalysis (26 volumes); Dementia, Paranoia, Psychoses, Schizophrenia (about 30 volumes); Endocrinology (about 20 volumes); etc., along with several related sub-disciplines. Nearly all have Jelliffe's typed or manuscript table of contents and author indexes laid-down onto the front and back endleaves, along with his illustrated bookplate either laid-in or lightly glued on the front pastedowns. Most volumes are thick quartos and octavos, as well as a few large quartos, bound in dark green cloth over boards with gilt spines and maroon spine labels. Most of the offprints and monographs are in printed wraps, and are Signed by Jelliffe on the front wrap or title page. Included are five volumes containing Jelliffe's works and translations bound in half-leather and marbled paper over boards. The five volumes bound in half-leather have detached boards and spine backs, about ten other volumes in cloth have split or partially split hinges with tears to the cloth spine backs, else overall most volumes are good or better with scattered scuffing and chipping to the board edges. This last remaining collection from Jelliffe's private library illuminates both his professional career in America and the origins and dramatic rise of psychoanalysis and psychosomatic medicine in Germany, the United States, and throughout the world before the Second World War.A list of selected offprints (most of which are inscribed to Jelliffe), along with letters and typescripts, is available. .

A copy of the inscription on the Nestorian Monument.

[China Folio extra (231.2 cm x 95.3 cm; 91" x 37.5"). [1] f.. ca. 1890?] The Nestorian Stele (also known as the Nestorian Stone, Nestorian Monument, or Nestorian Tablet) is a Tang Chinese stele erected in 781 that documents 150 years of early Christianity in China. It is a 279 cm tall limestone block with text in both Chinese and Syriac describing the existence of Christian communities in several cities in northern China, revealing that the initial Nestorian Christian church had met recognition by the Tang Emperor Taizong, due to efforts of the Christian missionary Alopen in 635. Buried in 845, probably during religious suppression, the stele was not rediscovered until 1625. Here the inscription is copied on mulberry paper, with slight modification of the arrangement of words at the very top, probably to allow everything to fit on the allotted paper. Overall very good with some small fold tears. A most impressive item.

New Haven: George S. Lester, 1890. Large folio. Original brown cloth stamped in black and gilt, rebacked, with original cloth laid down. Minor edge wear. Light thumb-soiling and occasional very minor foxing. Very good. An attractive collection of advertisements and chromolithographs from the late 19th century, the advertisements mostly related to Connecticut or Boston companies. The ads are mostly single-company, full-page ads, with a few featuring more than one company per page. Carriage makers, organ and piano manufacturers, chain makers, lithographers, and more are among the advertisers, with locations ranging from Boston to Bridgeport, New Haven, Middletown, Meriden, and other cities in Connecticut. The chromolithographs, which are most likely printed in Europe based on the style of the subjects and the printing, feature men in military dress, women in fine clothing, various sporting scenes, a few ornithological views, some rural scenes featuring children, and more. A bookplate from the New Haven publisher, George S. Lester, affixed to the front pastedown indicates the book was the property of a hotel "is presented for the guests of the house, and should not be removed from this room." "At different times book publishing has been very active.... George S. Lester and William Gay have also done much to make New Haven a center of book publishing" - Rockey. A handsomely-produced commercial promotional book, with gorgeous chromolithographed scenes. J.L. Rockey, ed., HISTORY OF NEW HAVEN COUNTY, CONNECTICUT (New York: W.W. Preston & Co., 1892), p.

First edition, uncommon in the original cloth. "Lucy Garnett travelled extensively in the Balkans and Middle East, recording the customs of the people among whom she lived. In Smyrna, and later in Salonica, she learned Greek and Turkish; her familiarity with demotic Greek led to a collaboration with the folklorist John Stuart Stuart-Glennie Â… Her most important achievement was the documentation and comparative study of Balkan folk literature, which is still valuable when detached from the dubious theories of 'scientific' folklore with which Stuart-Glennie tended to preface and gloss her work. She was particularly interested in the lives and status of women, and took advantage of her access to the women's quarters of remote Christian and Muslim communities to supplement the accounts of earlier travellers for whom, as she noted, 'the female sex may be said not to have existed Â… at all' (The Women of Turkey, 1, 1890, lxxvii)" (ODNB).

[title in Hangul character, translated as: Epistle to the Romans].

[Seoul: Sammun Ch'ulp'ansa] 12mo (21.5 cm; 8.5"). 26 ff.. 1890 As Darlow and Moule explain, this is "a revision of J. Ross' version [i.e. from his 1887 New Testament]." The Korean Bible Society at its website says that the revision was the work of Henry Appenzeller (1858–1902) and William Scranton (1856–1922), American Methodist missionaries, and gives the publication data. Appenzeller, Horace N. Allen, Horace G. Underwood, William B. Scranton, and Marion F. Scranton (WiIlliam's mother) are widely credited with introducing Protestant Christianity to Korea beginning in 1885. John Ross, whose version of Romans Appenzeller and Scranton revised, was associated with the U. P. Church of Scotland Mission at Mukden (i.e,, Shenyang), Liaoning Province, in northeast China, but never travelled to Korea. 1890 seems to be the year when books of the Bible were first printed in Korea; the earlier printings of the Scriptures were done in China or Japan. => Thus, this is one of the first printings of the Bible in Korea. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). => Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and COPAC locate only the B.F.B.S. copy at Cambridge. Stitched in original green patterned paper; wrapper sunned at edges and spine. English identification in library "crayon" to front cover and pencil to title-page, with shelf mark also to former. Very good.

19th Century Leather Fly Fishing Wallet - Over 130 Beautifully Handmade Flies for Trout Fishing

Birmingham, 1890. Birmingham, Midlands, circa 1890-1910. Leather fly wallet containing over 130 handmade flies for catching trout and possibly grayling, as well as wire, and a scant few small lead weights and hooks ready for application. 8vo. Accordion style leather fly wallet measuring approximately 17 x 10 x 3 cm, with hand sewn vellum pockets and sleeves, loops for small tools behind leather flaps, and a wrap-around ribbon closure. One tool is included. Ownership inscription within. Minor wear to wallet, otherwise in excellent condition, beautifully preserved, a lovely vintage array. In this fly fisher's day, one fabricated his own flies, and sometimes his rods and hand tools. This supply of dry flies and wet flies, the fisherman's own skilled handiwork, features lovely iridescent varieties, small silver shimmery wings, inconspicuous dark tones, and a large bright yellow lure. Several are mounted to knotted leaders, ready for an excursion. Sizes range from 7mm to 30mm. A select few are housed in paper pouches and marked for evening or summer fishing. The lot neatly organized in a cleverly hand-crafted wallet portfolio for custom use. The winged wet fly had emerged in the first half of the nineteenth century. For the most part trout flies were dressed using the hair and feather of native animals and birds, often with pheasant tippets, hen or mallard feathers, even seal's fur, and a touch of tinsel for glimmer. Mostly wet flies, some of the specimens identified are as follows. Several other varieties remain to be named by a fly fishing aficionado. • March Brown (still effective for downstream-swing technique, though not commonly used today due to the ambiguity of what they represented) • Greenwell's Glory (the famous fly which was first tied in 1854 by James Wright of Sprouston on the River Tweed, at the request of Canon William Greenwell of Durham, and which has since become one of the most widely used of all trout flies.) • Light Cahill, or a European equivalent (Designed in America by a New York railroad worker Daniel Cahill in 1880's as a fly that imitates summer mayfly duns.) • Clyde Style dressings (possibly) • Water Dun Wet flies have changed substantially over the last 150 years, so that they now work at various levels in the water column. Quite evolved indeed, they now mimic gasses trapped beneath the insect's exoskeleton which help it ascend from the bottom before hatching, mimic the bulbous thorax which contains the wing buds, and also mimic the emergence of the adult or dun from its immature form whilst breaking through the surface film.. Very Good.

The Picture of Dorian Gray [within Four Complete Novels by Famous Authors from Lippincott's Monthly Magazine].

London: Ward, Lock, Bowden and Company, n.d. [c.1890]., 1890. FIRST PRINTING of the complete novel. The sheets of the magazine were printed in America and issued simultaneously in USA by Lippincott and in London by Ward, Lock. These monthly magazines contained a complete novel in each issue and many went unsold; the remaining sheets were then bound up as the collections 'Six Complete Novels' or 'Four Complete Novels from Lippincott's Monthly Magazine'. The present copy was bound after August 1891, due to the imprint on the general title. The bibliography concedes 'the contents of these bound volumes are not always identical, the selection of monthly parts varying considerably. Dorian Gray is always placed first in the volume' (Mason 81c). Conan Doyle's The Sign of Four also appeared in the magazine around this time and his bibliographers expand upon the publisher's commercial approach to anthologizing; 'this was an attempt to dispose of the large number of early issues by including the short novels by Oscar Wilde or Rudyard Kipling' (Green and Gibson pp.37-8). Large octavo, pp.578. Publisher's light blue cloth blocked in red and gilt, coated yellow endpapers. The binding is mis-titled 'Four Complete Stories' emphasising the cavalier attitude towards the publication. Contents clean, edges toned, some 'stepping' to sections where bound from the parts, binding rubbed and edgeworn. A used but serviceable copy of the EARLIEST SHEETS of the novel, albeit bound later than the book-form edition. Most uncommon. Mason [81-82, 332]. Listed in The Observer's All-Time 100 Best Novels [2003].

Natural History of British Butterflies and Moths (Edward Thomas' signed copy)

London: W H Allen, 1890. Undated c1890s/1900s. Hardback, bound in the original decorative cloth. 26 × 17.5cm, xvi, 486pp. This copy belonged to poet Edward Thomas (1878-1917), and has been signed by him to the half-title page. A lovely late Victorian natural history of the butterflies and moths of Britain, arranged in chapters according to class (fritillaries, angel-wings, geometers etc) and illustrated throughout with black & white engravings. Edward Thomas himself wrote a book on "British Butterflies and other Insects" published in 1908, and it is wonderful to think of him using this book as a guide. Edward Thomas was a poet, essayist and author whose work deftly chronicles the life of the English countryside and the people who inhabit it. He came to poetry late, encouraged by Robert Frost. He joined the army in the Great War and was killed at Arras on Easter Monday 1917. Condition: The book is in a well-thumbed condition. The boards, joints and spine ends are strongly rubbed, the corners bumped. The hinges have been neatly reinforced with tape. The pages are lightly tanned throughout and the binding, whilst holding fast, is a little strained in places. The half-title page is browned quite comprehensively but Edward Thomas' signature is clear at the top edge. A bruised copy, but a rare and remarkable one with Thomas' signature. PLEASE NOTE: This item is heavy and will require extra postage. PLEASE SEE THE COX AND BUDGE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND TO SEE OUR FULL RANGE OF BOOKS. MANY THANKS. . Signed. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fair / Good.
