Veterans of the Little Big Horn Photograph c.1890

D.F.Barry, Superior, Wisconsin, no date. (c.1890), 1890. First Edition. Not Relevant. Very Good Condition. Photograph of Surviving Members of Custer's 7th Cavalry. An interesting photograph, likely taken during a series of events and speeches marking the ten-year anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn held at Fort Custer in 1886. The picture, taken on the front steps of a large home, shows an ornately dressed officer seated at the centre surrounded by five additional soldiers, eight women, and one male in civilian dress. The man at the centre is likely Lieut. Andrew Nave of the 7th Cavalry. Other identifiable officers are Jonathan Merrill, Capt. S. Barcer, Lieut. Maron and Lieut. Brennan. Among the women is Mrs. J. McDougall, likely the wife of Capt. Thomas McDougall, one of the officers to whom Custer sent desperate messages in his final moments. Thirteen of the subjects and their positions are identified on a small slip of paper accompanying the photograph. While still in residence in Bismark, North Dakota, Barry went to Fort Custer to capture scenes from the large anniversary gathering of veterans of the Little Big Horn. The present picture was likely reproduced from the original plate after Barry settled in Superior, Wisconsin in 1890. The label on the reverse identifies the artist as D.F. Barry. Photographs of ALL noted Indian Chiefs. Photographer. 1812 Tower Ave. Superior, Winsconsin. Barry often made reproductions of earlier works and constant strong sales afford him an influential position in his adopted city. Most popular was his series of Indian Chiefs, including such notables as Chief Gall. Little John, and Sitting Bull. A lovely photograph, from an important western photographer. Superior, Wisconsin. c.1890. 7 x 5 inches. Blindstamped and written attribution in lower portion, contemporary paper label on verso. The B of Barry has passed straight through the print. Clean. Very good. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer; General Custer. Inventory No: 188468. .

The Golden Bough A Study in Comparative Religion

London and New York: Macmillan and Co.,, 1890. In Two Volumes. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spines, mistletoe design to front boards gilt, dark green coated endpapers. Frontispiece to volume I. Contemporary gift inscriptions to first blank of Vol. II. Minor wear to tips, cloth a little rubbed with the odd faint mark, light foxing to endleaves, some pencilled annotations to text, small tear to rear free endpaper. An excellent set. First edition of Frazer's groundbreaking study of comparative religion. "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB).

[Photo Album]: Colorado Farm Life with Hunting

[Circa 1890s]. Quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Red cloth over paper boards with gilt stamped decorations. Contains 32 sepia toned silver gelatin photographs with some duplicates and three cyanotype prints measuring around 4" x 7" without captions. Good only with front board detached, lacking the spine, and chips with very good photographs, some fading.A collection of photographs featuring farm life and hunting in the American West around 1890. While unidentified, the location appears to be where the Great Plains meet the mountains, perhaps in Colorado. The photos depict the owners of the land posing near their cabin and a larger farm house in a variety of seasons: one photo shows a group of men enjoying some recreation under a tree after a summer picnic (with one holding a tennis racket) and the three cyanotype prints showing the men outside the house after a snowstorm.Hunting is the predominant subject depicted throughout the album with men posing with dogs, guns, and with kills. Photos including a man posed holding a gun with pelts attached to his belt and his dog sitting in front of him. Another shows a man on horseback holding the head of a deer, while several others showcase a hunting encampment. Also featured are the animals from the area including beautiful photos of a mountain lion by a river, a group of deer laying in a field, and cattle fenced in with a mountain range visible in the distance. While men are predominately featured throughout the album there is an image of a lone woman on horseback, which suggests her absence from other photos may be due to her being photographer of the group. A terrific collection of photographs depicting late 1800s farm life on the Plains with an emphasis on hunting. .

Printed wrappers which are lightly soiled, initials in monogram printed on the upper left corner of the front wrapper. The front blank is foxed, as is a 1/16 inch of the lower blank margin of a few leaves. A very good copy. Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914), a renowned researcher and member of the Paris police department, is credited with creating a criminal identification system known as anthropometry in 1882. This process measured and recorded various body parts of arrested suspects cataloging the results in order for eyewitnesses to identify these criminals in the future. Bertillon also standardized the criminal mug shot and the evidence picture. He developed "metric photography" that he intended to use to reconstruct the dimension of a particular space and the placement of objects in it. Crime scene pictures were taken before the scene was disturbed in any way. He used mats printed with metric frames that were mounted along the side of the photographs. Photographs pictured front and side views of a particular object. Bertillon also created many other forensics techniques, including handwriting analysis, the use of galvanoplastic compounds to preserve footprints, ballistics, and the dynamometer, to determine the degree of force used in breaking and entering. The Truthful Lens, # 12.

A terrific collection of photographs depicting late 1800s farm life on the Plains with an emphasis on hunting. .

Jeypore Portfolio of Architectural Details [Parts I-VI only]

London: Bernard Quaritch, 1890. 1st ed. Hardcover. Fine. The first six parts only (of an eventual 12 -- the other six were published over the next 23 years). Each volume (Part) consists of: (1) a title-page; (2) a single-page preface (repeated in each Part) on the back of which appears a Contents list for that volume; (3) 1-4 pages containing Short Descriptive Notes about the plates; and (4) the plates of architectural details. There are a total of 374 plates in these six volumes. 348 of those plates are printed completely in black and white while the other 26 are either printed in color or have one or more detail printed in color. The title-pages and plates are printed on one side. The former owner of this set didn't like having the plates and other contents loose in portfolio volumes and constantly at risk of chipping and other loss or damage from mishandling so he had a binder individually stub every page and uniformly bind these six parts in modern buckram in 1966. Receipts indicate that he paid $125 for the set and spent another $315 to have them rebound. These are large folio-sized volumes (54cm.). Minor cover scuffing and wear only. The plates generally show only minor age-toning and an occasional minor edge repair and perhaps a couple of corner chips or repairs. Two plates in Part IV have been bound in out of order (plate 3 appears after plate 5 and plate 47 after plate 54). A typed list identifying the localities in India where the architectural details in these six volumes were located was prepared by the former owner and mounted on the verso of the title-leaf in Part I . Part I. Copings and Plinths; Part II. Pillars -- Caps and Bases; Part III. Carved Doors; Part IV. Brackets; Part V. Arches; and Part VI. Balustrades. These volumes were published under the patronage of Maharaja Sawai Madhu Singh of Jeypore. Jacob is identified as Engineer to the Jeypore State. According to the Preface: "The lads who have been employed in preparing the drawings are all natives of Jeypore, trained first in the School of Art, and then in the office of the Executive Engineer."

In Darkest Africa or the Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria.

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington Limited, 1890 - 2 volumes, demy quarto. Original dark brown half morocco, japon on bevelled boards with the title, flag of Emin Pasha and Stanley's signature to the upper boards gilt, gilt lettered spines, top edges gilt, others uncut, dark brown silk page-markers still intact, and in place. Spines rubbed, scratch across numbering panel of volume I, sides stained, volume I with stain in the gutter at head of a number of leaves and splash marks across rear endpapers, otherwise internally clean and sound. Titles printed in red and black, photogravure portrait frontispiece of Stanley on India paper mounted (printed by Lemercier from a photograph by Walery), similar Lemercier-printed frontispiece to volume II, and 44 plates, 6 of them etchings printed in sepia, signed in pencil by G. Montbard, the rest printed on India paper and mounted, 4 maps, 3 of them folding, the 2 large area maps linen-backed, 1 folding printed table, and 103 illustrations in the text, 3 of them full-page. First edition, edition de luxe, number 199 of 250 copies signed by Stanley. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha, who proved singularly resistant to being "rescued", his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for his mission have all come under suspicion then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. In the course of the journey Stanley met Roger Casement, then in service on the Congo, discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. Translations of In Darkest Africa appeared quickly in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch while sales of the English trade editions reached 150,000 copies. This lavishly produced edition de luxe is certainly one of the grandest publications devoted to African exploration of the entire 19th century. Speake pp. 1132-35
