THE PRONOUNCING EDITION OF THE HOLY BIBLE, CONTAINING THE AUTHORIZED AND REVISED VERSIONS OF THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, ARRANGED IN PARALLEL COLUMNS, GIVING THE CORRECT PRONUNCIATION OF EVERY SCRIPTURE PROPER NAME CONTAINED IN THE BIBLE

Chicago, IL: John Gately & Co., 1890. Gorgeous and massive 125 year-old bible, truly a labor of art, love and faith combined. Full leather. Elaborate, Baroque, modelled thick boards with intricate gilding, and so many separate gilt design motifs and scene-representations on covers, that one could "read" the cover for a full hour before ever opening this beautiful book! Original stamped metal clasps. All edges gilt. Many hundreds of elaborate partial-page engravings,as well as numerous full-page engravings, at least fifteen of which are in brillilant color (see photos). Scripture itself comprises 1342 pp. but more than a dozen separate sections are separately numbered, bringing the total of pages to approximately 1760. Family pages NOT filled-in, and thick, cardboard sleeves, one leaf of which will accomodate 2 photos measuring 5.25" x 3.75", the second leaf holding eight 3" x 2" photos. Some leather touch-up and minor restoration. Only a very few (under a half-dozen) pages have some small closed edge tears. Page edges are age-tanned. Overall a positively lovely, and rich example of an old family bible, lavishly appointed. Text Includes COMPLETE CONCORDANCE; marginal references; chronological tables; a history of ancient biblical manuscripts with facsimiles of the same; the earliest printed editions of The Bible; a history of the revision of the bible; Chronology of the Books of the Bible; Lives and Histories of the Writers and Translators; Cities of The Bible with Descriptive Scenes and Events; Kings and Prophets of Judea and The Bible; Harmony of the Four Gospels; Missionary Travels of St. Paul; Bible Stories for Young People; Psalms of David in Meter; Historical Illustrations of Bible Text Derived From Ancient Coins and Gems; Coins, Money & Weights of The Bible; and A New Self-Pronouncing Dictionary of The Bible (William Smith). etc "...This revision of the Authorised Version was undertaken in consequence of a Resolution passed by both houses of the Convocation of the Province of Canterbury, as has been fulliy explained in the Preface to the Revised Version of the New Testament, which was first published in May, 1881...the following General Principles...were laid down by the Revision Committee of Convocation for their guidance: 1) To introduce as few alterations as possible into the Text of the Authorised Version consistently with faithfulness; 2) To limit, as far as possible, the expression of such alterations...; 3)...the Text to be adopted be that for which the evidence is decidedly preponderating; and that when the Text so adopted differs from that from which the Authorised Version was made, the alteration be indicated in the margin..."         Harper's Bazaar 1890. FULL YEAR BOUND VOLUME.

Harper Brothers. New York. 1890. - Massive volume; three-quarter leather binding 16 x 11 inches; 1052 pp. Fifty-two lavishly illustrated issues; 32 featuring a Supplement. Of great interest are the 24 tipped-in folded patterns for clothing: women's garments, young girls' garments; dolls' costumes, etc. These are bound into the volume, and all are in very good condition. Copious illustrations of women's and young girls' clothing are featured in the newspaper; these include tennis blouses, formal evening wear, riding habits, gowns for various occasions including weddings; also shawls, hats, embroidery patterns and more. Several newspapers have short marginal tears (repaired with archival tape); one cover was soiled in the mail. Abrasions to exterior: spine edges and corners of covers; overall very good condition. ITEM WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 20 LBS: WE WILL QUOTE EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES. The rear page of each issue of the newspaper features captioned cartoon images (6 x 4.5 inches or so); many of these depict African-American characters whose verbal exchanges are rendered in dialect. There are other cartoons featuring Chinese characters. The newspaper's extensive single and double-page illustrations focus on costumes of the day, but others reflect wider-ranging interests. These include a bird's eye view of Rome, bicycling, the deck of an Iron Clad (ship) photographed from the mast of another vessel, art work by various artists including Alice Barber (Stevens) whose Harmony in a Virginia Cabin depicts an African-American family, a full-page illustration depicting a female photographer, illustrations of theatrical interest, etc. Loads of full-page illustrations of British royalty and English historical subjects make clear the Anglophile leanings of the publisher and no doubt the bulk of the newspaper's readers. A small mailing label on the front cover of the newspaper identifies the subscriber to the publication as Jacob Kamm of Portland Oregon. Kamm, a prominent businessman in 19th century Portland, founded the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and was heavily involved in real estate in the city. His estate was valued at over four million dollars at the time of his death in 1912. The volume is in very good condition, tight and attractive in its binding. Uncommon in such good condition.

A Skipper in the Arctic Seas

London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1890. First edition. Folding colored map, frontispiece, 18 plates & illustrations to text. viii, 271, [blank] pp. 8vo. Faux tree calf, spine gilt, red morocco label to spine gilt, all edges marbled, some discreet library stamps and minor spotting. A very good copy. First edition. Folding colored map, frontispiece, 18 plates & illustrations to text. viii, 271, [blank] pp. 8vo. LAND-LUBBERS IN THE ARCTIC. A jolly account of two "land-lubbers" who charter a whaling vessel and sail to the east coast of Greenland, Jan Mayen and Spitzbergen. Clutterbuck makes no excuses for himself and fellow sailor stating that they know "nothing about the places we were going to or of the 'paraphernalia' of Arctic travel", and their awareness of the sea is limited to it being a "dismally damp place." They departed Peterhead on the whaler Traveller (partially covered in zinc to protect against against the ice) on May 1, 1888, for a five month voyage. Clutterbuck initally struggled to settle into life at sea, first due to sea-sickness and then due to odd meal times. And once he'd finally acclimatised, they immediately found themselves in a fog which took ten days to pass. Their muddled bearings are evident on the folding map. Clutterbuck is a keen observer of life on deck and the world around him. He describes the rocky desolation of Jan Mayen, the dramatic coast of Spitzbergen ("a rocky eminence so steep ... it would defy a bird to fly up it"), the ice, and the particulars of the Arctic climate in great detail. They also took every opportunity for sport: killing eight hundred and seventy-six seals, four reindeer and one polar bear on the journey and much of the work is devoted to it. Interspersed with all this are hot baths, huge breakfasts ("if there is anything we consider delicious in this sinful world it is young seals kidneys"), and evening pipes. Although published by Longmans, much about this book suggests Clutterbuck contributed toward costs. Probably printed in small numbers, its scarcity on the market is confirmed by no copies being listed on ABPC or Rare Book Hub.

Photograph album with what is probably the earliest photographs of a parachute descent.

Spokane, 1890s. Small (7.5? x 5.5) album with ten 4.75? x 3.75? photographs inserted in heavy card leaves. The photos are all of sights and scenes in and around Spokane, Washington. The cover shows wear, and the front cloth hinge is beginning to separate. The leaves are soiled and show toning, dust, glue, and/or old mildew stains. The album has been de-humidified, frozen, and exposed to UV lighting to kill possibly dormant spores. The photographs are all in very nice shape with no damage or staining; all can easily be removed from the album. Two of the photographs show a parachute descent from a hot-air balloon at Loon Lake about 35 miles north of Spokane. The jumper is undoubtedly ?Captain? Thomas S. Baldwin as he was the only daredevil making parachute attempts at this time. The first photograph shows a crowd gathered around a balloon as it is being inflated with hot air; the second shows Baldwin?s parachute beginning to deploy shortly after he has jumped from the balloon. Baldwin was a 19th century circus aerialist who, after becoming fascinated with hot-air balloons, modified his act in 1875 so that he could perform from a bar hanging below an airbag. He quickly became a star attraction at fairs all over the country, Canada, and the Far East, performing almost 3,000 acrobatic ascents. Noticing that the novelty of his act had begun to fade, Baldwin and his brother designed a light, flexible, and compact parachute. ?In front of an audience at San Francisco?s Golden Gate Park on January 30th, 1885, Baldwin offered the park manager a deal?he would jump from a hot-air balloon for $1.00 per foot of height, with 2,000 feet being the maximum. The crowd, unknowingly, witnessed the first public descent in a parachute [by an American, and] Baldwin was soon dubbed ?The Father of the Modern Parachute.? [Although Baldwin invented and used the first parachute harness, his] jumps were nothing like those of today. Baldwin would ascend in a sitting position on a small seat beneath his balloon. When he reached the desired altitude, Baldwin would pull a rip panel in his balloon to release the hot air, causing the balloon to begin a rapid descent. With the momentum needed to fill the parachute with air, Baldwin would then jump from the seat.? (National Aviation Hall of Fame) Exceptionally scarce. As of 2016, there are no locatable photographic records of any earlier parachute descents; none in the trade; no auction records at ABPC, Rare Book Hub, or LiveAuctioneers; no sales records at WorthPoint; no institutional holdings per OCLC, and no images available through Google, Bing, or Yahoo searches.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Johann Orth"). Birstein, 20. II. 1890.

1890. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

Together with his recently wedded wife and the entire crew, he got caught in a storm while sailing along Cape Horn on the night of 20 to 21 July and sank; neither he nor the crew was never heard from again. This fine letter (addressed to Anton Weissenböck, the manager of Castle Orth) gives detailed information as to which objects had been found aboard the "Saint Margaret": "all the silverware, china and glasswares, as much kitchenware as strictly necessary for the preparation of fine dinners for eight persons, 3 tablecloths for 12 persons, 8 tablecloths for 6 persons, 9 tablecloths for 4 persons; 20 small, grey napkins, 17 sheets, 18 pillowcases, 32 towels; bottles of wine: champagne 31, Hochheimer Dechantei 6, Hochheimer 10, Issan 10, Johannisberger 8, Madeira 3, Sherry 10, Muskat 4, Julien 14, Chablis 10, Rücksheimer 8, Vöslauer 42, Grinzinger 74, Larose 4, Julien 3, Oporto 1, Runkelsteiner 2; liqueurs: all; my white flannel trousers; my gun with bullets (green paper cartridges - not the brass ones) [...]". - On stationery with printed letterhead "Morley's Hotel, Trafalgar Square"; adhesive tape in the centerfold.

        Principles of Economics

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1890. Vol. I [all published]. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles to spine gilt, raised bands, burgundy endpapers. Ownership inscription of Daniel Bell to head of half title, with occasional ink side-ruling and marginalia. Leaf edges lightly toned; an excellent copy. First edition. Marshall's Principles, the first full version of his theories covering consumer demand, the supply of the agents of production ? land, labour, and capital ? the relationship between demand and supply and the creation of value, and the distribution of this value between the agents of production, proved to be one of the most influential and widely read economics treatises ever published. It went through eight editions in quick order. Marshall's Principles cannot readily be regarded as a radical manifesto but rather as the great work of "Neoclassical Economics", probably the clearest general statement of that particular school. "At the time of his death", J. M. Keynes wrote in the DNB, "he was recognised as the father of economic science as it then existed in England." The first edition is rare.

        Immigrant?s Postcard Album

St. Louis, 1890s to 1910s. Leather postcard album titled, Grüße aus der Ferne (Greetings from Afar) with 50 leaves containing a total of 200 postcards primarily from Germany and Austria-Hungary with a few from Italy, Russia, and Switzerland. The album has some wear but is in nice shape overall. Almost all of the postcards are postally used and in nice shape. The name and address of the owner are written on the front flyleaf. This is a superb collection of German and Austrian postcards celebrating holidays, events, the military, and travel. Some of its highlights include * A demonic Krampus lifting French and Russian soldiers by the scruffs of their neck; * Several pig and clover New Year?s cards; * A New Year?s card showing a man firing a pistol in the air as two women cover their ears; * Several Easter cards with anthropomorphic bunnies and chicks; * A Christmas tree being decorated by dwarfs; * Three cards from the Exposition Universelle de 1900 in Paris, one showing the Eiffel Tower; * Kaiser Wilhelm on horseback reviewing troops; * Several Emperor Franz Josef cards; * A patriotic card showing ancient Germanic warriors; * Event cards for agricultural, industrial, and craft expositions; * A card for a hunting festival showing men and women in traditional hunting clothes; * Several humorous cards including an anthropomorphic Hippo gondolier and babies sitting amongst anthropomorphic mushrooms: * A Russo-Japanese War card with illustrations of soldiers from both countries, and * An advertising card for the Nordsee-Linie-Hamburg. Other cards include dogs, horses, pretty young women, children, a fencer, the renowned opera singer Geraldine Farrar, ships, currency, the physician-poet Justinus Kerner, the famous economist Ferdinand von Steinbeis, and ?Grüße aus? cards from cities and towns throughout central Europe. This album and most of the postcards were apparently brought to the United States as a reminder of family, friends, and the home he left behind by Umrath when he emigrated from Prague via Hamburg in 1908 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he became a sales manager for the Steiner Electric Company, which manufactured meat choppers and coffee mills. No doubt this album was a comforting piece of the old country for Otto as he made a new life in America, and, as such, I hope that it remains intact, although that is doubtful as many of these cards would sell on for $20 to $100, and some, like the Krampus card (which does not have a red background and satirically portends the coming of World War One) could easily bring several hundred. Priced to sell at $5/card.

        Vintage photographic portrait

1890 - VON GLOEDEN, Wilhelm. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a Sicilian youth. [Taormina, Sicily], circa 1890. Original albumen photograph, measuring 4-1/2 by 6-1/2 inches, mat size 8 by 11 inches. $1500.Vintage head-and-shoulders portrait in profile of a Sicilian youth in headdress."Over 80 percent of Von Gloeden's photographs were circulated through traditional postcards, magazines and advertisements. In Germany, his work could be found in "˜health and physique' magazines. Britain used hundreds of his draped studies as advertising for "˜romantic Mediterranean vacations' in travel magazines" (W.B. Nally), or they "masqueraded as artists' models" (Frizot, 271). "Von Gloeden was one of the earliest gay photographers of the male nude. His best known images"" those enormously popular among the Victorians"" depict nude boys in garlands or scant robes acting out Homeric themes; but many of his other images, which once totaled over 3,000, are [simply] elegant studies of the male body" (Jason Goldman). It has been estimated that at least two-thirds of Von Gloeden's negatives were destroyed by Mussolini, who considered them objectionable. This head-and-shoulders portrait in profile is posed in the classical manner, with eyes looking upward. See McDarrah, 515. Small surface abrasion to left margin (not affecting subject), minor creasing to corners. Near-fine condition. Scarce.

Lectures Notes from Courses on Agency and Partnership Taught by Prof.

1890. Lecture Notes Compiled by a Student at the University of Michigan Law School in 1890-1891 [Manuscript]. [Lieghley, I.A.]. [Wells, William P (1831-1891)]. [Lectures Notes from Courses on Agency and Partnership Taught by Prof. Wells]. [Ann Arbor, October 3, 1890-March 4, 1891]. 161 [i.e. 191] pp. Quarto (9" x 6"). Quarter cloth over pebbled paper. Light rubbing to boards, heavier rubbing with some wear to extremities, hinges cracked, binding still intact. Light toning to interior, content in clear hand to rectos and versos of pp. 1-186, occasional annotations to final 28 leaves, including an index, additional annotations to endleaves, newspaper obituary of Prof. Wells affixed to rear endleaf. * This notebook offers an opportunity to "audit" two courses taught at the University of Michigan in the early 1890s by one of its leading professors. These appear to be notes taken in class. Lieghley added an index at a later point. The notes indicate the durability of the lecture format at Michigan, but with some influence from the new case-method system. Lieghley signed the front pastedown and noted his membership in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The lower part of the page contains a note stating the date of Professor Wells's death. Wells, the Kent Professor of Law, taught at the university from 1874 to 1891. After Thomas M. Cooley, he was the most distinguished member of Michigan's faculty in the late nineteenth century. Little is known about Lieghley. Martindale directories from 1890s and early 1900s indicate that he had a private practice in Detroit.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
