Autograph letter signed ("Johann Orth"). [London], 1. II. 1890.

1890. Large 8vo. 2 pp. After renouncing his ties with the Imperial family, Johann Orth purchased a captain's license and bought the British barque "Saint Margaret" in January 1890. Together with his recently wedded wife and the entire crew, he got caught in a storm while sailing along Cape Horn on the night of 20 to 21 July and sank; neither he nor the crew was never heard from again. This fine letter (addressed to Anton Weissenböck, the manager of Castle Orth) gives detailed information as to which objects had been found aboard the "Saint Margaret": "all the silverware, china and glasswares, as much kitchenware as strictly necessary for the preparation of fine dinners for eight persons, 3 tablecloths for 12 persons, 8 tablecloths for 6 persons, 9 tablecloths for 4 persons; 20 small, grey napkins, 17 sheets, 18 pillowcases, 32 towels; bottles of wine: champagne 31, Hochheimer Dechantei 6, Hochheimer 10, Issan 10, Johannisberger 8, Madeira 3, Sherry 10, Muskat 4, Julien 14, Chablis 10, Rücksheimer 8, Vöslauer 42, Grinzinger 74, Larose 4, Julien 3, Oporto 1, Runkelsteiner 2; liqueurs: all; my white flannel trousers; my gun with bullets (green paper cartridges - not the brass ones) [...]". - On stationery with printed letterhead "Morley's Hotel, Trafalgar Square"; adhesive tape in the centerfold.

        Principles of Economics

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1890. Vol. I [all published]. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles to spine gilt, raised bands, burgundy endpapers. Ownership inscription of Daniel Bell to head of half title, with occasional ink side-ruling and marginalia. Leaf edges lightly toned; an excellent copy. First edition. Marshall's Principles, the first full version of his theories covering consumer demand, the supply of the agents of production ? land, labour, and capital ? the relationship between demand and supply and the creation of value, and the distribution of this value between the agents of production, proved to be one of the most influential and widely read economics treatises ever published. It went through eight editions in quick order. Marshall's Principles cannot readily be regarded as a radical manifesto but rather as the great work of "Neoclassical Economics", probably the clearest general statement of that particular school. "At the time of his death", J. M. Keynes wrote in the DNB, "he was recognised as the father of economic science as it then existed in England." The first edition is rare.

        Immigrant?s Postcard Album

St. Louis, 1890s to 1910s. Leather postcard album titled, Grüße aus der Ferne (Greetings from Afar) with 50 leaves containing a total of 200 postcards primarily from Germany and Austria-Hungary with a few from Italy, Russia, and Switzerland. The album has some wear but is in nice shape overall. Almost all of the postcards are postally used and in nice shape. The name and address of the owner are written on the front flyleaf. This is a superb collection of German and Austrian postcards celebrating holidays, events, the military, and travel. Some of its highlights include * A demonic Krampus lifting French and Russian soldiers by the scruffs of their neck; * Several pig and clover New Year?s cards; * A New Year?s card showing a man firing a pistol in the air as two women cover their ears; * Several Easter cards with anthropomorphic bunnies and chicks; * A Christmas tree being decorated by dwarfs; * Three cards from the Exposition Universelle de 1900 in Paris, one showing the Eiffel Tower; * Kaiser Wilhelm on horseback reviewing troops; * Several Emperor Franz Josef cards; * A patriotic card showing ancient Germanic warriors; * Event cards for agricultural, industrial, and craft expositions; * A card for a hunting festival showing men and women in traditional hunting clothes; * Several humorous cards including an anthropomorphic Hippo gondolier and babies sitting amongst anthropomorphic mushrooms: * A Russo-Japanese War card with illustrations of soldiers from both countries, and * An advertising card for the Nordsee-Linie-Hamburg. Other cards include dogs, horses, pretty young women, children, a fencer, the renowned opera singer Geraldine Farrar, ships, currency, the physician-poet Justinus Kerner, the famous economist Ferdinand von Steinbeis, and ?Grüße aus? cards from cities and towns throughout central Europe. This album and most of the postcards were apparently brought to the United States as a reminder of family, friends, and the home he left behind by Umrath when he emigrated from Prague via Hamburg in 1908 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he became a sales manager for the Steiner Electric Company, which manufactured meat choppers and coffee mills. No doubt this album was a comforting piece of the old country for Otto as he made a new life in America, and, as such, I hope that it remains intact, although that is doubtful as many of these cards would sell on for $20 to $100, and some, like the Krampus card (which does not have a red background and satirically portends the coming of World War One) could easily bring several hundred. Priced to sell at $5/card.

        Vintage photographic portrait

1890 - VON GLOEDEN, Wilhelm. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a Sicilian youth. [Taormina, Sicily], circa 1890. Original albumen photograph, measuring 4-1/2 by 6-1/2 inches, mat size 8 by 11 inches. $1500.Vintage head-and-shoulders portrait in profile of a Sicilian youth in headdress."Over 80 percent of Von Gloeden's photographs were circulated through traditional postcards, magazines and advertisements. In Germany, his work could be found in "˜health and physique' magazines. Britain used hundreds of his draped studies as advertising for "˜romantic Mediterranean vacations' in travel magazines" (W.B. Nally), or they "masqueraded as artists' models" (Frizot, 271). "Von Gloeden was one of the earliest gay photographers of the male nude. His best known images"" those enormously popular among the Victorians"" depict nude boys in garlands or scant robes acting out Homeric themes; but many of his other images, which once totaled over 3,000, are [simply] elegant studies of the male body" (Jason Goldman). It has been estimated that at least two-thirds of Von Gloeden's negatives were destroyed by Mussolini, who considered them objectionable. This head-and-shoulders portrait in profile is posed in the classical manner, with eyes looking upward. See McDarrah, 515. Small surface abrasion to left margin (not affecting subject), minor creasing to corners. Near-fine condition. Scarce.

Lectures Notes from Courses on Agency and Partnership Taught by Prof.

1890. Lecture Notes Compiled by a Student at the University of Michigan Law School in 1890-1891 [Manuscript]. [Lieghley, I.A.]. [Wells, William P (1831-1891)]. [Lectures Notes from Courses on Agency and Partnership Taught by Prof. Wells]. [Ann Arbor, October 3, 1890-March 4, 1891]. 161 [i.e. 191] pp. Quarto (9" x 6"). Quarter cloth over pebbled paper. Light rubbing to boards, heavier rubbing with some wear to extremities, hinges cracked, binding still intact. Light toning to interior, content in clear hand to rectos and versos of pp. 1-186, occasional annotations to final 28 leaves, including an index, additional annotations to endleaves, newspaper obituary of Prof. Wells affixed to rear endleaf. * This notebook offers an opportunity to "audit" two courses taught at the University of Michigan in the early 1890s by one of its leading professors. These appear to be notes taken in class. Lieghley added an index at a later point. The notes indicate the durability of the lecture format at Michigan, but with some influence from the new case-method system. Lieghley signed the front pastedown and noted his membership in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The lower part of the page contains a note stating the date of Professor Wells's death. Wells, the Kent Professor of Law, taught at the university from 1874 to 1891. After Thomas M. Cooley, he was the most distinguished member of Michigan's faculty in the late nineteenth century. Little is known about Lieghley. Martindale directories from 1890s and early 1900s indicate that he had a private practice in Detroit.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition consisting of a reprint of the "Today Journal", one of five numbered copies on Imperial Japan, deluxe edition. Signed autograph of Stéphane Mallarmé: "A gentleman Nys very sympathetically." Our copy is enriched frontispiece and like all copies of the deluxe edition, a portrait of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam by Debordier he dedicated it to Nys. Two very clear and light waterstains minor margins in the first and last guards, a small marginal tear on the second flat. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Signed photograph of British Big Band leader William Henry (Debroy) Somers

London: circa 1930s-. Original photograph. 8.25 x 6.25 inches. "To Harry " William Henry (Debroy) Somers (1890-1952) In the galaxy of stars in the firmament of British dance bands in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, none shone more brightly than that of Debroy Somers, an engaging and handsome fellow with a brilliant musical talent. He rose to become a giant in the big dance band era as a lyricist, composer, musical arranger and band leader. He played every instrument in the band with proficiency and, according to one commentator, was 'an absolute master of the oboe, cor anglais, piano, harp, clarinet, saxophone and xylophone'. In the circumstances of his life and upbringing, this is not surprising. This is Harry Bacon, the preeminent London shirtmaker and the brother of Max Bacon. Before becoming a character actor, Max Bacon was one of the most significant drummers in Britain during the 1920s and 30s. He wrote Max on "Swing" (1934).

        Yakumo no Chigiri

1890 - EISEN, Tomioka. Yakumo no Chigiri. Tokyo, circa 1890. Tall octavo, original cloth and paper boards, accordion-style binding. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7800.Early printing of this 19th-century Japanese color woodblock print "pillow book," graphically depicting erotic material, complete with 12 exceptional double-page full-color woodblock prints (each 13 by 9-1/2 inches) by celebrated Meiji era artist Tomioka Eisen. The art of shunga-erotic Japanese woodblock prints-flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries, reaching its greatest artistic heights in the capital city of Edo (Tokyo), and were most frequently sold as albums (enpon). "Pillow books" were often given to new brides or newly wed couples. While some of the most celebrated artists of the day created enpon as a highly lucrative supplement to their income, the government forbade their sale, resulting in some secrecy. Consequently, such albums are often not signed, as here. These prints, featuring men and women in various erotic positions, are exquisitely detailed and in a rainbow of colors (with each different color necessitating a different woodblock). They were created by celebrated 19th century woodblock print artist Tomioka Eisen. This volume, Yakumo no Chigiri ("Poetic Intercourse") is one of Eisen's most notable. "Although at a distance of almost a century and with a style and a poetic language by now quite old, we are therefore in front of a trial of subtle and allusive eroticism for certain verses similar to that of Utamaro" (Shunga, the Erotic Art of Japan, 168). Illustrations vivid and bright, with only most minor creasing, near-fine. Contemporary binding very good with light rubbing and minor expert repair to folds. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Les Habitués des Prisons de Paris

Lyon & Paris: Storck & G. Masson, 1890. First edition. 8vo, xi, 616 [5] pp. Illustrated with two folding plates, 79 drawings in the text, and five plates following the text, three of which are photographic and feature 11 portraits of prisoners. Bound in half crushed red morocco over marbled boards, four raised bands at the spine, and title and two florets in gilt. Ex-Libris Albert Briére, governer of Annam (central Vietnam) from 1891-1897, with his engraved bookplate to ffep and rubberstamp to lower margin of the title plate. First edition of this landmark work of criminology focused upon those incarcerated in the prisons of Paris, by an early and prominent disciple of Lacassagne. Laurent was a central figure in the expansion of criminology as a discipline with which to approach the visual art and literature of the underworld during the fin du siecle. One of the main motivations of his work was a fear of, and urge to understand literary and cultural decadence, and his works are valuable for documenting the arts of prisoners, homosexuals, and the mad. Chapter 23 of the present work is an important early text on the tattoos of prisoners, and includes 15 striking drawings from the skin. Spine very slightly cocked, with a touch of rubbing along the hinges, a 1" split beginning at foot of front gutter, some moderate bubbling to marbled paper over rear board. Very good.

The ART Of ZIGZAG CURVE PITCHING. A Book of Instructions for All Classes of Players, Embracing Both Theory and Practice of the Art

Milton, Conn: Published by the Author, 1890. 1st Printing. Printed self-wrappers. Stitched into a custom brown paper wallet-style folder with hand-inked titling to one side. Age-toning & signs of use to pamphlet. First & last leaf detached. Prior owner pencil signature on the copyright page ["James M. Kane / Doylestown / Pennsylvania"]. A Good copy of this rare survivor.. 8 pp. 5-7/8" x 3-1/2" The booklet attempts to explain the physics behind not just a regular curve ball, but a zig-zag or compound curve ball. The author explains at length the techniques and rotational dynamics of throwing a ball so that it not only spins around its axis, but also rotates around the poles, to acheive a tricky wobbling pitch... "in order to produce a compound curve the direction of the motion of the rotation bust be reversed or changed." I know of no pitcher today who employs such a pitch. OCLC records just two institutional holdings of this work [Baseball HOF; BYU].

Excursions on Land and Sea: The World's Wonders

Birmingham: Joseph Walker, 1890. Sole English edition. Scrolling toy panorama measuring approx. 3-1/4 x 90 in., featuring 32 color images each with printed captions. Panorama attached to two wooden spindles, these operated by a pulley system with a crank handle. Housed in the original cardboard box (measuring 7 x 6-1/2 x 3-1/2 in) styled as a theatre with a chromolithograph laid down on the front, at rear a candle-holder for lighting. Sole English edition. Scrolling toy panorama measuring approx. 3-1/4 x 90 in., featuring 32 color images each with printed captions. A wonderful piece of Victorian ephemera, a tour around the world stopping at Spain, Gibraltar, Italy, Egypt, India, China, the United States, Canada and elsewhere. The images showcase architectural and geographical landmarks, native people, hunting scenes and even disasters at sea. Many appear to be drawn from published accounts - for example the Zambesi Falls recalls images by Thomas Baines, and "Mr and Mrs Gorilla at Home" is likely after Paul Du Chaillu's work. We locate one other example of this at the Yale Center for British Art. They date it at 1865, but we feel it was more likely produced around 1890. Curiously, there was also a French edition, commencing at Paris rather than Portsmouth. The 32 scenes are as follows: [1.]We Commence our Tour "Excursion Round The World" [2.] We arrive & Embark from Portsmouth 3. Full Steam English Channel 4. Eddystone Lighthouse 5. Escurial, Spain 6. Rock of Gibraltar 7. Port of Malaga, Spain 8. The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy 9. Mount Vesuvius, Italy 10. Port Said 11. The Pyramids, Egypt 12. Falls of the Zambezi, Africa 13. Natives Capturing an Elephant, Africa 14. Mr and Mrs Gorilla at Home 15. Hippopotamus Hunting 16. Victims of the Slave Trade 17. Capturing a Shark in the Indian Ocean 18. Ship on Fire 19.         The Nursery Alice

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1890. Tall octavo. Original white cloth-backed white glazed pictorial boards designed by E. Gertrude Thomson, title to front cover red and black. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, 19 colour illustrations after John Tenniel. Boards soiled and scratched, tips worn, some finger-marking to contents. A very good copy. Second edition (the first published in the UK), first issue. With a note inscribed by Dodgson, cut from a form and tipped-in to the half-title: "May, 1890. Charles L. Dodgson. Ch. Ch., Oxford." The most notable alteration between the first and second editions is the printing of the sheets on white rather than toned paper and the change to the illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on p. 34, removing Alice's profile. The first issue has "Price four shillings" above the imprint.

Norristown, PA, 1890. Original photograph album. Portfolios. Very Good. The 237 finely executed albumen photographs (each measuring about 3 by 4 inches) are neatly mounted on rectos of 37 large quarto leaves (very heavy stock boards, measuring 14 by 11 inches). The 37 leaves are housed in two custom paper chemises, each titled in Crosby M. Wright's neat ink holograph: "234 [237] Pictures Taken for OUT OF THE BEATEN TRACK by Crosby M. Wright...." Included are: views of the Monmouth Beach Lifesaving Station and crew; fishing fleets; a captured white whale; ice harvesting; an offshore shipwreck; drying fish; spinning and weaving; views of the Jersey Shore and Atlantic City lighthouses; windmills; canal locks; local characters and children; numerous views of the New Jersey coast; &c. ~~ Moving up the Hudson River... Depicted in one photograph is a man in snowshoes. Several images include Dutch houses (based on roof lines) and Dutch barns. Images of two or more windmills might suggest Staten Island or somewhere up the Hudson River. The long wooden bridge in one view might be across the Hudson. Several canal locks and barges are shown (Delaware and Raritan Canal? Morris Canal?). Several views show low falls in a river, possibly the Delaware River, a bit above Trenton. The ice-harvesting images could be from New Jersey or Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River. Views of people living in cabins reflect the 1890s era of life along waterways in the eastern states. ~~ On the whole, the 237 photographs, mounted on 37 numbered boards, are in excellent condition, with sharp focus and good contrast. Although a few photos have faded over time, most of them represent an impressive production by a skilled 19th-century photographer and adventurer. The photographer, Crosby Morton Wright, was a wealthy amateur. He was born January 12, 1847 to Ellen E. and William M. Wright. In the 1867-68 Philadelphia Directory, Crosby is listed as a plumber living at 509 S. 9th Street. By 1880, the city directory lists Crosby M. Wright as living at 1419 Arch Street, without an occupation. In the 1892 city directory, Crosby is again listed as living at 1419 Arch Street with no occupation. In the 1880s and 1890s the family also appears in Philadelphia's Blue Book. Crosby's father dies between 1892 and 1893 when his mother Ellen is listed in the directory as the widow of William and living with Crosby M. at 1419 Arch Street. By 1910, Crosby has married Fanny D, a woman 22 years his junior, and has a daughter. He lives at 2405 Bryn Mawr Avenue in Philadelphia with his family, a cook, a gardener, and a housekeeper. Under "occupation," the census-taker wrote "own income." No occupation is listed for Crosby in the 1920 census. He died on August 11th of that year, and is buried at Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd.
