        Pre-Conversion Letter By Brigham Young's (Twice-over) Future Father-in-Law

A scarce early letter from the father of two of Brigham Young's plural wives. It discusses a period of his life that is virtually unknown (see Gilman Bigelow Howe's Genealogy of the Bigelow Family in America (Worcester, 1890). As Susa Young Gates (a granddaughter of Nahum Bigelow and daughter of Brigham Young and Lucy Bigelow Young) wrote in his only known biography in the Juvenile Instructor (April 15, 1891): "Little can be told of the early life of Nahum Bigelow--leaving behind him no record except in the hearts of loving descendents. From that record--halting and imperfect as it may be and is--the following sketch can be made." she goes on to speak of the background from other family oral traditions, but little of an historical note exists. After moving from Mt. Carmel, Illinois to nearby Lawrenceville, he was married in 1826 to 16 year old Mary Gibbs who was 24 years his junior. After the birth of Mary Jane and Lucy, he moved his family to Hancock County where he was converted to Mormonism some time after 1835. The family removed to Nauvoo in 1843 and after the murder of Joseph Smith they trekked to Winter Quarters, Indian Territory (near today's Omaha in 1847. The two daughters were to become plural wives of Brigham Young. The letter is written to his brother, Noah (1783-1850), an itinerate preacher who was interested in land speculation in Mount Carmel, Illinois. Nahum writes: "Dear Brother, I take my pen to write a few lines….after losing all hopes of hearing from you again….the lots you purchased ought to be in no danger….they [do] have to be disposed of soon. He writes that he has a son and a daughter [twenty-one months old]. Seal hole affecting a few letters and repaired fold tears with no loss of text.

The Stamps of Tasmania : a history of the postage stamps, envelopes, post cards, adhesive and impressed revenue and excise stamps of Tasmania

London: Philatelic Society. 1890. 200 copies only (not stated). Small 4to. viii, 136pp, 9 plates printed rectos only (loosely inserted), Lt.-Governor Arthur's 1827 newspaper duty stamp illustrated in text (p15). Unlettered green cloth, extremities rubbed, a few slight marks. A little offsetting on the endpapers, a good+ clean copy (but see below). ***This copy bound in unlettered green cloth, patterned endpapers, edges sprinkled red, with the plates loosely inserted, and is without the folding map of Tasmania. Ferguson 10648 does not mention a map, and calls for only 8 plates (the latter clearly an error). The publisher's binding was blind-stamped brown cloth, lettered on the spine, with yellow endpapers; the plates follow the text and map is at the title-page, all hinge-mounted with linen (the two copies in the State Library of Tasmania, and the Royal Society of Tasmania's copy are thus). The map is a standard Tasmanian government issue (drawn by Leventhorpe Hall, 1884) and in his introduction Hull thanks the Tasmanian Minister of Lands for supplying it, but not all copies in public collections have one (those in the National Library, State Library of Victoria and Queen Victoria Museum, Launceston do not). Some copies of the book were bound privately for institutions. .

A bound collection of coloured botanical specimen plates

Rochester, NY: M. Brunswick & Co, 1890. Octavo. (5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches). 129 colour pochoir or chromolithographed plates, bound accordion style with the plates generally mounted in rows of three, joined by cloth ribbons, each row joined by a second row of three so that six plates are visible on each opening. Bound to style in black morocco. Housed in a black cloth box.A very fine tree-peddler's sample book from M. Brunswick & Co.This album has a greater number and variety of plates than usually encountered: in the pomological section there are depictions of 25 kinds of apples, 3 pears, 7 cherries, 7 plums, 1 apricot, 2 peaches, 26 berries and currants, 6 grapes, 2 vegetables; the horticultural section includes 22 trees, flowering shrubs or climbers, 12 roses and other flowering plants and more."Mina (or Minnie) Brunswick (1849-1925) is listed in the Rochester city directories as a producer of fruit plates or nurserymen's plates from 1888 through 1920. Her first advertisement, in the 1889 directory, reads in part: 'M. Brunswick & Co., (Formerly with D.M. Dewey), Manufacturers of Hand Painted Fruit and Ornamental Plates. All of Mr. Dewey's artists have been retained by us' ... Brunswick, by the 1910s, appears to have been the last producer of hand-painted (stencilled) plates in Rochester." (Kabelac).Nearly all the plates include the Brunswick imprint, which suggests that this album was sold ready-made. The more usual practice was for the salesmen to make up his sample-book from individual plates from a number of different publishers. The album can be dated approximately from dates in the descriptions of a handful of plates between 1888 and 1893, which is consistent with the firm's starting date.Cf. Karl Sanford Kabelac, "Nineteenth-Century Rochester Fruit and Flower Plates" in The University of Rochester Library Bulletin (1982) vol. XXXV, pp. 93-114; cf. Sandra Raphael An Oak Spring Pomona65.

Oysters, And all about them. Being A complete history of the titular subject, exhaustive on all points of necessary and curious information from the Earliest Writers to those of the Present Time, with numerous additions, facts, and notes..

London and Leicester: John Richardson & Co.,, 1890 A very good copy of the 1st and only edition of this work in 2 volumes with an inscription by the author in Vol I. Vol I published 1890; Vol II published 1891. A comprehensive and exhaustive work on oysters covering history, varieties, cultivation, cooking etc. The author originally intended to complete the work in a single volume, but gathered so much material that this was not possible. There is a small slip at the beginning of Vol II which explains this and why the pagination and chapters run continuously through the work. This copy is in the original blue decorative cloth bindings with gilt and black titles to the front boards and a black lined illustration, and gilt titles to the spine. The bindings are both bright and clean with some pulling to the spines and light wear to corners and edges including joints. Both have the original endpapers which are unmarked. There is an ownership signature to the reverse of the fep of both volumes and the author's inscription: 'With the author's kind regards June 1891' to the top of the title page to Vol I. Contents are very clean: there is a little spotting to foredge in both volumes. A very scarce work.

In Darkest Africa or the Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatorial (2 volumes)

Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington Limited, London 1890 - (xvi),(1)-529 & (xvi),(1)-472 Pp. Two steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, two photogravure plates on India paper, mounted, 36 wood-engraved plates on India, mounted, 6 etchings by M.G. Montbard signed by the artist in pencil. First edition, edition de luxe, number 90 of 250 copies signed by Stanley. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha, who proved singularly resistant to being "rescued", his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for his mission have all come under suspicion then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. 4 coloured maps and plans; the 1 larger folding maps mounted on linen. [I folding map missing] Original dark brown half morocco, japon on bevelled boards with the title, flag of Emin Pasha and Stanley's signature to the upper boards gilt, gilt lettered spines, top edges gilt First edition, edition de luxe, number 90 of 250 copies signed by Henry Stanley.         Plan of the country around Shanghai Compiled from the best Authorities with numerous additions from Actual Survey

c.1890., Shanghai, - Cyanotype plan of Shanghai Cyanotype map. A cyanotype map of Shanghai. Cyanotypes are created by using paper soaked in a photosensitive ferro-gallate solution. When the paper is exposed to sunlight, it turns blue. The original map would have been laid on top of the ferro-gallate paper, and the printed lines of the original created the white lines on the cyanotype. The original map was compiled by Thomas Waters (1842-98). Waters was an Irish civil engineer and architect who carved out a successful early career in Japan, designing the Imperial Mint in Osaka and the headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Army. He worked briefly in Shanghai at the end of the 1880s, before going out to Colorado to join his brothers in silver and gold mining. The map may have been drawn up as part of Waters?Äô bid for the commission to construct a new waterworks in Shanghai. Waters was a strong contender in the competition, as he had experience in the field: he was partially responsible for the construction of Japan?Äôs first sewer system. 880 by 960mm. (34.75 by 37.75 inches).

Visit to Chile and the Nitrate Fields of Tarapaca

1890 - RUSSELL, William Howard. A Visit to Chile and the Nitrate Fields of Tarapacá Etc. London: J.S. Virtue, 1890. Tall quarto, original green-gray cloth, patterned endpapers. $1800.First edition of this fascinating travel narrative about turn of the 20th century Chile, with a special focus on industry, with two folding color maps of Chile, 19 illustrated plates of views and important sites, and numerous other in-text illustrations, in original cloth."Russell may be said to have invented the office of the modern special correspondent. He was distinguished throughout his career by great moral courage In 1889 went as the guest of Colonel John Thomas North, the Nitrate King, who paid him £1000, to South America" (DNB). He writes: "I was invited so that I might see and report what had been done and to examine the works which had transformed the desert of Tarapacá—wastes without a sign of life or vegetation—into a centre of commercial enterprise, and which had covered it with animated industry and prosperous life." This work, however, is far more than a report on Chile’s industrialization. Russell combines his reportage with engaging descriptions of Chile’s cities and charming anecdotes of his travels. Here, he sets a new standard for travel writing. Melton Prior’s plates and illustrations complement the text and serve as wonderful examples of the war artist’s lighter work. Owner signature of H.R. Carter.Small closed tears at map stubs, a few spots of marginal foxing to text, text block split but holding firm, only slight soiling and toning to cloth. An extremely good copy.         Aradia or the Gospel of the Witches

London: David Nutt, 1890. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Nice clean copy in green cloth boards. Book has no inscriptions and pages are tight and unmarked though slightly tanned. Pages are rough-cut with uneven page block. Guilt title on spine still bright, and white/silver title on front board is not worn. Very slight bumping to extremities and a minor indentation on the front board. The front board is a little loose and there is some sort of taped repair that seems to be affixing what may have been the front end paper to the front boards (see picture). Despite this fault it is overall a very nice copy indeed. Please contact me for further pictures.

        Musterbuch für Stahldruck.

Unpublished [n.d., but ca. 1890]. Folio (32.5 x 21.0 cm). Ca. 300 pages, with over 2,500 finely hand-coloured decorative transfers in Art Nouveau and romantic styles. Black blind half calf over black boards. Front board with original, neatly handwritten label.l A very rare and probably unique pattern book with exceedingly delicate and richly hand-coloured illustrations, using all colours and shades, including gold and white was to be used in the ceramic industry. The work was intended as an example for the colourists of fine porcelain, in particular dinnerware. The original monochrome printed transfers (often of flowers, but also of fruits, a bird, etc.) are here added to glossy paper, and then coloured with water colours as if on the ceramic object itself. The original colouring was probably done by the designer, as the accuracy and quality of the colouring is far above average indeed. Each transfer is numbered, and many have additional information. Each leaf has several (often five or more) illustrations on one side (recto). Some leaves have additional, smaller leaves with more illustrations attached; in a few cases, an illustration is added to the verso of the previous leaf. Sometimes part of a leaf has been replaced, with new illustrations added or pasted over others, apparently replacing obsolete illustrations, and a few are cut. Every page is an inspiring and surprising joy to the eye. Some faint thumbing to right bottom corner, but all pages free of spotting or foxing due to the good quality of the paper. An unusually nice item.

Doktor Zhivago. (Schiwago). first public Russian editio !

2 Blatt, 566 Seiten, 1 Blatt. Grüner Original-Pappband mit illustriertem Original-Schutzumschlag. - Minimal bestoßen, der Schutzumschlag mit kleineren Läsuren. Papierbedingt etwas stockfleckig, vorderes Vorsatzpapier mit kleinem Ausriss. - Green paper boards, with the original dust jacket (chipped at spine-ends and corners). Some foxing on the first pages and a minor piece torn out on the paste down. Rare first public edition of Doctor Zhivago. This book caused the worst crizis of the Soviet literature politics. In 1958 Pasternak was nominated for the noble prize for this novel. But there was no Russian edition, while the discussion was ongoing. The American Secret Service distributed copies to the Nobel Prize Committee with Feltrinellis name on it, but without a copyright note. Feltrinelli was now in difficult situation, he published it and the costs were paid by the CIA. The American Secret Service tried to influence while the Cold War the Russian cultural politics and they were interested in Pasternak as a Noble Prize Winner. The Soviet press began to criticize Pasternak and it was forbidden for him to accept the Nobel Prize. Furtheron he was isolated and expelled from the Soviet Writer's Association. The first edited and correct Russian version was published in the Ann Arbor Michigan Press in 1959, and in 1988 was the first Russian edition published in Russia itself. - Compare THE MOSCOW NEWS, # 18,2007 and Cornwell "Reference Guide to Russian Literature, p 617,624.

        Autograph postcard signed.

Postcard. Eastbourne: Aug. 20, 1890. Postcard, 3 x 4 3/4 ins. Written in purple ink. Small strip of adhesive tape at top edge from prior attachment to an album. In very good condition. An intriguing postcard from Lewis Carroll to the booksellers Meehan in Bath from whom Carroll is known to have ordered books. Written from 7 Lushington Road, Eastbourne, Carroll writes: “Mr. C.L. Dodgson has rfeceived Messrs. Meehan’s catalogue No. 28 and would like to have, if in clean condition, 218 Child’s Book. Bertha. 1881 4/6 to be sent to the above address.” Recorded by Edward Wakeling who noted that Carroll is known to have ordered books from Meehans and that the book in question might be “Bertha Marchmont, or, All is not gold that glitter: a tale for the young by Mrs. George Cupples (Anne Jane Cupples), Nelson, 1879. The book was probably a reprint if the date is 1881. There is a first edition in the British Library.” Another possibility is “Little Bertha’s Secret” by M. Gilpin, London, Milner and Co., [1881?]. In any case it seems so appropriate to have Lewis Carroll ordering children’s books to read on holiday by the seaside just a few miles from Brighton. A short walk from the sea and close to the train station, the house is now a dental surgery. Carroll spent 19 summer holidays in Eastbourne from 1877 on. Why he ordered books from faraway Bath and not nearby Brighton is a mystery.
