- A fairly extensive archive of the business and social life of Wilfred A. Joubert, an American businessman who had extensive dealings first in Paramaribo, Suriname (Dutch Guiana) and later in Chiapas, Mexico. Joubert seems to have landed in Suriname sometime around 1890 in hopes of harvesting and exporting balata (an early latex product) for The American Exploitation Company and as an official representative for a few other interests. Included in this archive are what appears to be early land documents with hand drawn maps and official Dutch Stamps and signatures. Also included is a gold mining prospectus, a surveyor report and a folding printed map of Suriname (c 1896) showing the latest gold discoveries with the location of found nuggets. Joubert later ended up in Mexico exporting rubber for the Rio Michol Rubber Plantation Co. and bananas for the United States Banana Company, both in the midst of the Mexican revolution. Though it is not clear from the papers, it looks as though Joubert left Mexico as all Americans were warned to do by President Wilson. At this time he keeps up his correspondence with his Mexican interests and is asked by powerful New York bankers/politicians to travel the U.S. and give speeches to enlighten Americans on the "Mexican Conflict" with the hopes of also getting citizens to purchase bonds for W.W. I as Victory Liberty Loans. THIS ARCHIVE CONTAINS NEAR 300 PIECES WEIGHING ROUGHLY 27 POUNDS CONTAINING THE FOLLOWING: Joubert family history (Olmstead, Frye) papers, letters of recommendation (old copies and originals), 3 Surinamese newspapers from the 1890's, officially registered power of attorneys, hand drawn land plot maps with official Dutch stamps and signatures (eight or more), balata sales contracts, personal letters describing life in Suriname, itemized receipts for corporation purchases, RARE LARGE SCALE MAP (55" X 99") OF SURINAME ( by Cateau Rosevelt & Van Lansberge, 1882, 1:200,000) ON 10 SEPARATE SHEETS MOUNTED ON LINEN WITH PENCIL PLOT ANNOTATIONS, folding blueprint of Mexican rubber plantation, letters describing Mexican life including; Constitutionalists, horse and gun confiscation, exchange rates, price of rubber, Germans, Zapata, WW1, mahogany tree growth, Palenque Indians, building of a local garrison, taxes doubling, Mexico City, life in the jungle w/small hand drawn river maps, large printed map of Mexico and Mexican Railway network, Mexican contracts for Rio Michol Rubber, United States Banana & Moctezuma Rubber plantation, type script articles about Mexico for publication, PHOTO BOOK OF PLANTATION BUILDINGS AND PEOPLE WITH MANY SMALLER PHOTOS OF A LARGE WOODEN ROLLER COASTER BEING BUILT (probably NY or NJ), Redpath Lyceum and other speaking engagement schedules for ("The Mexican Situation") with train schedules, promotional cards for speeches, LARGE FOLDING PROMOTIONAL POSTER FOR SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS, fictional story for a child ? and other items. [Buenos Aires: Guillermo Kraft, 1890. Twenty-six tinted photolithographic plates. Oblong quarto. Original publisher's binding of half red- dyed leather and boards with illustrated front cover. Front cover soiled and lightly worn, particularly in margins. Light age-toning and soiling in margins of plates. A very good copy. An extremely rare album of twenty-six images by the Belgian photographer, Teófilo Fumière, produced during a journey to the Chaco region of Argentina, an extensive lowland plain in Central South America now divided among Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. Included are images of the Paraná River and the towns and settlements of Bella Vista, Puerto Ocampo, Puerto San Vicente, and San Antonio de Obligado. Several images show rancho residents and sugar plantation workers. In addition, there are eight photographs of Indians of the region in transit to, and in residence at, the mission of San Antonio de Obligado. Separate pictures were taken of the Indian children, women, men, and tribal leaders. The album, produced by the Buenos Aires publisher, Gillermo Kraft, consists entirely of tinted photolithographs, without any supplemental text. The images, particularly those of the residents and Indians, are extremely clear and detailed. A fine album of photographs of the Chaco region from the late 19th century, highlighting the state of lithographic publishing in Buenos Aires at that time. Extremely rare, with no copies listed on OCLC.

Ruder Photographer, NY 1890 - Original photograph, 5-3/4 x 4-3/8 inches, mounted on grey board, 8 x 12 inches, within triple rules, some sunning to top inch of board on which photo is mounted, lacking tissue guard was was previously affixed, photograph is fine. This is a handsome image of the pianist and composer, seated on a rocker on a proch most likely in the country, reading a book. The tree outside the porch and the light colored and light-weight dress indicates summer. Amy Beach (1867-1944), composer and pianist , showed her musical precocity early on; by four, she was composing waltzes. her mother, a talented singer and pianist, undertook her daughter's first musical education; later she studied Ernst Perebo, Junius W. Hill and Carl Baermann. During the winter of 1881-1882, Hill taught her harmony, 'the only formal instruction in music theory she ever received. l[NAW] At the age of 16, she debuted with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a pianist and, finding favor with critics and public alike, continued to give recitals. Her marriage in 1885 to Dr. H.H.A. Beach, a distinquished surgeon and colleague of Dr. Oliver Wendell olmes, considerable altered the course of her career. her husband appreciated and supported her music but disliked her performing in public. With his encouragement she focusted on composing, teaching herself the priciples of musical composition. Her Mass in E Flat major for vocal quarter, chorus, orchestra and organ, was first performed in 1892 by the Handel and Haydn Society with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It was the "first work by a woman performed by this oldest and most conservative of American choral organizations." [NAW] remarkable for any composer, all but three of her 150 works were published. She also sought to encourage other woman in music, founding in 1926 and serving as first President, the Association of American Women Composers. [THE BOOK OF WMEN'S FIRSTS] Highly regarded throughout her career, Beach's music fell into oblivion after her death; new recordings in the 1970's reawakened interest in this fine composer and musician. Ladies' fencing and gymnastics in Victorian West London - album of material assembled by gymnastics teacher Katherine Woodward, including original illustration by Alice B. Woodward, photographs, programmes, newspaper cuttings.

London: London, from her address at 129 Beaufort Street, Chelsea; as well as Alexandra House, Kensington Gore; Fulham Congregational Lecture Hall and St Johns Mission Hall, Chelsea,, 1890-7. Quarto brown cloth album (287 × 243 mm), bevelled boards, with embossed panel, in black and oxidised gilt to the front board, ownership inscription 'Katherine Woodward' inked to the front pastedown. Around 60 items neatly laid down both sides of the 24 card leaves of thick card-stock. A detailed listing of the contents below. A little rubbed and soiled, skilful restoration at the spine and corners, hinges professionally repaired, album leaves browning and a touch brittle, the contents with some spotting, mild fading and mottling of the photographs, occasional soiling, but overall very good Intriguing personal album of material assembled by gymnastics teacher Katherine Woodward, including original illustrations by Alice B. Woodward, photographs, programmes, newspaper cuttings, the items dating from between 1890 and 1897. Katherine Woodward came from a prosperous and highly-cultured Victorian family in West London. Her father Henry Bolinbroke Woodward (1832-1921) was Keeper of Geology South Kensington, and editor of the Geological Magazine from its commencement in 1864 until the end of 1918; and her sister was the well-known illustrator Alice B. Woodward (1862-1951), who worked on both children's and scientific books, several pieces of original artwork being included here. The present assemblage gives a marvellous insight into a key period in the progress of the emancipation of British women, the connection between physical exercise and education being emphasised by a page of illustrations of Royal Holloway College, and a magazine article on 'How Women May Make Money ?As Teachers of Athletics' (see section VIII below). Woodward began her involvement in physical culture by attending Miss Stuart Snell's ladies gymnasium at Alexandra House, Kensington Gore (see the related programme, newspaper cuttings, and eleven original photographs), and as section IX shows, she was soon in search of work as a teacher of gymnastics. A number of later items relate to her employment as director of the Girls' Drill Classes, Fulham Congregational Lecture Hall and St John's Mission Hall, Chelsea, where she showed herself to be 'an accomplished gymnast', having 'very kindly given her services voluntarily'. At the same time - see items I and III - she had set up her own gymnasium at the family home, 129 Beaufort Street, Chelsea. I: Two original design drawings in black ink, presumably by Alice B. Woodward, each on a 130 x 210 mm piece of card, being attractive decorative headers for 'Fencing Lessons' and 'Gymnastic Lessons' at Woodward's own venue, 129 Beaufort Street, Chelsea, and each with a "trophy" f relevant equipment, and a banderolle with the motto 'Strength & Grace'. II: Exquisite original ink drawing by 'A[lice]. B[olingbroke]. W[oodward].' of a lady fencer, 130 mm high, accompanied by a manuscript poem - presumably by Katherine Woodward and apparently unpublished - titled 'Feminine Fencers', beginning: 'In the distant lands
