The Firm of Girdlestone - A Romance of the Unromantic.

Small 8vo. London: Chatto & Windus, 1890. Small 8vo, viii, 399pp. Polished red calf extra, gilt-panelled backstrip, all edges gilt, original cloth upper cover bound in. A fine binding by Bayntun, in fine condition. First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Conan Doyle on the title-page: "With the author's compliments and thanks". A lovely copy of the first book Doyle wrote, which was his fourth published book following on the success of "A Study in Scarlet". Doyle reputedly had an aversion to inscribing his books, especially the Sherlock Holmes titles, and, as here, very rarely even signed with his name, preferring "from the author" on the rare occasions he did inscribe a book.

        The Picture of Dorian Gray

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott; London: Ward, Lock & Co,, 1890. [In:] Lippincott's Magazine. No. 271, pages. 3–100. July, 1890. Octavo. Original paper wrappers, spine lettered in red and black, front cover with title lettered in blind on red ground within black border, illustrated advertisements to rear cover in black. Housed in a purple flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Small ink ownership initials on front cover. Minor loss to spine ends, wrappers stabilised at joints with neat glue repair, chipped at extremities. Overall an excellent copy. First edition, US issue (no priority). This is the first appearance in print in any format of The Picture of Dorian Gray. It was published on 20 July 1890 in Lippincott's Magazine concurrently in Britain and America: there is no primacy between the issues, and in both the text of the novel is the same, printed from stereotype plates made in America, with variant advertisements, additional articles, and covers. The previous year, in September 1889, J. M. Stoddart, the Philadelphia publisher of Lippincott's Magazine, came to London looking for short novels for publication. At a dinner with Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle, later described by Doyle as "a golden evening", he convinced both to contribute a novel for the magazine; Doyle contributed the Sherlock Holmes story The Sign of Four, and Wilde contributed his longest prose work, The Picture of Dorian Gray. It was published in book form the following year, for which Wilde substantially revised the work, and added six new chapters.

Seven albums of magnificently finished paintings, employing brush, watercolor, and Japanese pigments, mostly double-page, depicting approximately 310 botanical specimens, many with small supplementary drawings. 45; 45; 47; 46; 44; 45; 38 folding leaves (not counting some blanks). Seven vols. Small folio (310 x 227 mm.), orig. brown wrappers. [Japan]: 1890-93

      - The beautifully rendered illustrations in these seven albums were most likely executed by Akio (or Keigu) Yamamoto (1827-1903), Confucian scholar, doctor, botanist, and highly gifted artist. He was born in Kyoto, the son of the prominent doctor and botanist Boyo Yamamoto who specialized in materia medica (honzo). Keigu travelled widely throughout Japan, drawing plants and animals. He also wrote several standard works on materia medica and left many sketchbooks which entered the Kyoto rare book trade in 1932; some of these were published only in the 1980s. All of his sketchbooks offered valuable and unique information regarding native plants and plants which had been introduced into Japan. The paintings in our seven albums are clearly by a master and they very closely resemble the albums of Yamamoto's drawings preserved in the Iwase Bunko Library in Aichi Prefecture (see their webpage), in style and format. The artist demonstrates his great skill with brush, watercolor, and Japanese pigments. The illustrations are highly accurate and vivid. The coloring is rich and fresh. Much of the paper used is mica paper. The seven albums are divided by subject as we learn from the inscriptions on the lower edges: 1. Trees and flowers. Each brilliantly colored drawing is dated 1890 with the month and sometimes the place. The illustrations depict camellias, magnolias, cherry blossoms, willow, plum trees, chrysanthemums, narcissus, peach, pear, etc. Many of the pages contain extra depictions of the developing blossom, sometimes ten different stages. The artist also provides notes on appearance and scent. 2. Vegetables and fruits, dated 1890-93. Cucumbers, eggplants, pumpkins, herbs, red radish, peppers, scallions, plums, apricots, pomegranates, pears, gingko, yuzu, persimmon, etc. On the final leaf of Vol. II, the collector has written his signature "Kansai Sawawatari." 3. Trees and flowers, dated 1890. Rhododendrons, maples, iris, wild orchid, peonies, lilies, roses, beans, wheat, dandelion, etc. Some of the illustrations extend beyond the double-page openings. Towards the end of this volume, there are four black ink & brush drawings and one color drawing on tissue paper pasted-in. Written on the color drawing is "Teacher Akio Yamamoto's sketches copied." 4. Plants and flowers, dated 1890. Hydrangea, cucumber, several kinds of lotus, dahlia, pepper, hosta, pumpkin, beans, morning glories, clematis, etc. Yamamoto has also indulged in nature printing by inking a number of leaves and pressing them on to the pages. 5. Plants and flowers, dated 1890-91. Marigolds, lilies, morning glories, maples, plums, quince, cherry, apricot, etc. 6. Illegible title. With a thirty plant manuscript index. Dated 1891. Narcissus, camellia, peonies, fiddle fern, iris, poppies, plums, iris, gardenias, lilies, morning glories, dogwoods, etc. 7. Plants and flowers, dated 1891. Iris, orchid, willow, peonies, wild orchid, narcissus, clover, holly, pine, wild orchid drawn in the Chinese style, etc. On the final leaf, the collector has written his signature "Kansai Sawawatari." ? S. Kitamura, "Phonzoshaseizufu by Keigu Yamamoto," an on-line article from the Japanese Society of Plant Systematics, Acta. Phytotax. Geobot, Vol. XXXI, Nos. 4-6 (Nov. 1980), pp. 195-200 (the correct title is Honzo shasei zufu).

      - written on the Steamship '\i Mariposa ', 'off Honolulu, June 25, 1890.'\i Six page letter (2 closely written sheets, one of which is folded to form 4 pages) from American Thomas B. Merry to Colonel J. D. McCutcheon, written near the start of Merry's return trip from Australia to San Francisco. *The \i Mariposa, built in 1883 by William Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, made several transpacific voyages for the Oceanic Steamship Company during the latter part of the nineteenth century, carrying passengers and mail. The subject of the letter is the controversial American civil war veteran James P. Lesesne (1847-1892), who in 1888 had been appointed by President Grover Cleveland as the U.S. Consul General to Melbourne. After his arrival in Australia, Lesesne developed a gambling problem, which Thomas Merry's letter suggests was common knowledge in Melbourne at the time: 'The Consul-Generalship at Melbourne should be made a vacancy as soon as possible and some decent Republican put in place of J. P. Lesesne, the man who now disgraces it. A petition for his removal, if circulated in Melbourne, would be signed by every American resident of the place. . I write this as a life-long Democrat. . in October last he won about \'a3340 on the Caulfield's races. The bookmakers took his word just as if he had put up the coin. When it came to the Melbourne Cup races, they did likewise and were obliged to settle for about 60% of what he owned them.' The letter gives details of several more debts unpaid by Lesesne (including borrowing \'a3100 'on his word as a Mason \ul which he has never paid'\ulnone ) and an unsuccessful writ against him 'but he had nothing to attach'. Legal action to recover unpaid debts was taken against Lesesne on more than one occasion. Eventually, in June 1892 his body (with a pocketful of betting stubs) was found floating in Sydney Harbour. An inquest concluded that 'the death of James P. Lesesne took place on or about the 13th June in Sydney Harbour and that same arose from asphyxia by drowning, but how or through what means deceased got into the waters there is no evidence to show'.

Schriften-Schatz, Eine Sammlung Praktischer Alphabete Für Berufszeige Aller Art (Fonts Treasure, a collection of Practical Alphabets for Professional Branches of All Kinds)

Ravensburg, Germany: Otto Maier, ca 1890. The cover shows wear, mainly soiling due to age. There are some small section of missing surface litho towards the top right corner. The folio itself shows some very minor rubbing to the edges. The instructional and circular pages show edge wear as they are printed on a thinner paper then the rest. There is a small stain on the bottom right corner of plate 71, but it does not affect the font shown. . A print makers book of focusing on a variety of different fonts. Printed in German, the pages are individual loose leafs. The folio of book is green with a wonderfully designed cover pasted on. There are various floral and sculpture elements in the design. This book features 80 plates, though only 58 different fonts as often times a single font carries over several leaves. The fonts themselves are amazing in their diversity, some were flourishes, some fanciful, others more modern or art deco looking. They are printed in black, red, green, and gold, and sometimes uses combinations of those colors. Along with the plates is an introduction page (that on the reverse has a Table of contents indexed by the type of font: Roman, Gothisch, Fraktur, Script, Free fonts, Initials, Foreign Language Alphabets, and Digits etc.), an instructional page, and a circular with testimonials. This set has a total of 80 plates in it. What makes this book confusing though is that the Table of Contents, as well as the plates themselves have a several printing errors on the numbering of said plates. For some reason plates 1 - 8, have been labeled on the plate itself as 81 - 88. However since the title of each font has been printed on each page, one can cross reference with the table of contents and clearly see that plate 81 is plate 1, and so on. Additionally, plate 35, is misprinted in the Table of Contents as plate 85. Lastly this book is missing plate 6 (aka 86), which is the font Zierschrift (schattiert), gross Alph.         Black and White post- card of W. G. Grace]

Circa 1890 - 140 x 90mm, signed by Grace below image, 140 x 90mm (5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches), mounted, very good-plus. W. G. Grace (1848-1915) was always an attractive personality on the cricket field, and in the later years of his great career carried a certain atmosphere of romance about him. His great towering figure, with his strong features and full black beard, instantly commanded attention, and there was always the expectation among the spectators that he might be out for some great performance. Descriptions of him even at his best make no reference to any special degree of style in his batting. His great height made it inconvenient for him to hold his bat down to the block-hole; it was generally held some distance off the pitch, looking a mere toy in the hands of a giant. Yet it was with a remarkably straight bat that the ball was played. His batting was distinguished for its strength and certainty rather than for its elegance; his regard, however, for orthodoxy of style comes out in his own statement that he was forty years of age before he adopted the fashionable 'pull' stroke. "Style is ease, and ease is strength," he once said, and that summed up his creed on the point. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Picture of Dorian Gray

8vo. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1890. 8vo, 1-100 pp. within the magazine of 174 pp. plus adverts at beginning and end. Original printed wrappers in red and black, wrappers slightly darkened with a few short tears, and some small stains, slightly chipped at head and base of spine. Blue quarter morocco slipcase. First edition, the rare Philadelphia issue. "It was in September 1899 that the Philadelphia publisher of Lippincott's Magazine, J.M Stoddart, came to London looking for short novels for publication. He approached both Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle, and took both out to dinner: an event recorded by Doyle as "a golden evening". Doyle ended up agreeing to write a second Sherlock Holmes story (The Sign of Four), while Wilde contributed The Picture of Dorian Gray. The character of Dorian was probably named after the young poet John Gray (see lot 107) who was introduced to Wilde by Ricketts and Shannon. When the story appeared on 20 June 1890 it immediately created a huge amount of attention and interest, with some finding it repellent. Victorian Literature was, however, irrevocably altered. Furthermore the book had a profound impact on Wilde's own life, since a copy was lent by Lionel Johnson to his young cousin Lord Alfred Douglas, who begged to be taken to meet the author. Thus Wilde saw his own fictional character come to life." (Sotheby's, £3000 hammer 2016).

        Original Sketchbook of Jewellery Design.

[c.1890?] - 279 largely hand-coloured designs on tissue paper or card, tipped in to a square-ruled note book. Orig. black cloth. Stationery label of L.& D. Grebel, Paris. A wonderful collection of jewellery designs, probably French. The highly detailed designs, largely in colour, are of ornamental combs, bachelor buttons and possibly brooches. The sketches for the decorative heads of combs are elegantly uncomplicated often with a floral design or with the addition of a dove or dragon. The other, largely circular designs, are distinctive in style with the continual inclusion of animals, cherubs, floral patterns, and musical instruments. The more unusual sketches have an air of the fairytale about them; cherubs riding dragonflies, doves, snails and cats; violin-playing crickets and cello-playing mice. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An album of 32 photographs of the Yosemite and American West

Giants of American West photography. This beautiful album contains many splendid views of the scenic wonders of Yosemite including splendid Watkins and Taber views. Subjects include the many magnificent falls, the Mariposa Grove of sequoias, and the great geological formations. At least two, and likely many more, of the views in this collection were taken by Carleton Watkins. Those for which attribution to Watkins has been confirmed are singled out below, but this collection merits further investigation to identify Watkins photographs. Isaiah Taber was a dominant figure in Western photography after the Civil War. In 1864 he came to San Francisco, founding his gallery in 1871. In the winter of 1875-76, Taber acquired Carleton Watkins's collection of Pacific Coast Views negatives and Yosemite Gallery in the aftermath of Watkins's bankruptcy. "Once he had acquired Watkins's gallery and negatives, Taber began his bid for the exalted position of premier photographer of the west coast." Many of Watkins's prints were released with Taber's imprint. Over the next three decades Taber became the dominant figure in photography in the Far West. In 1906 the San Francisco earthquake ended his career, destroying his premises and an estimated twenty tons of view negatives and eighty tons of portrait negatives. 32 albumen prints (sizes vary; see list below) of Yosemite and selected other scenes in the American West, on light gray card mounts. All but four signed in the negative by Taber of San Francisco. Contemporary dark blue morocco (measuring approx. 18 x 12 in.), upper board stamped in gilt "AMERIKA," rebacked, brass fittings, lacking clasp. Silk patterned endpapers. Mounts foxed, slight staining, occasional foxing or fading to images. An outstanding album with beautiful, rich prints. Please inquire for a listing,.

        The Maltings, Great Grimsby.

      - [London, Sir Joseph Causton & Sons, c. 1890]. 4to. Original full calf, richly decorated and lettered in gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; pp. 40, highly illustrated throughout, apart from a few very light spots, a fine copy. First edition, of an addendum to Barnard's sought-after and rare four-volume work Noted Breweries of Great Britain & Ireland (cover title of this publication; however, not part of the Noted Breweries), dealing with the malt industry in Grimsby. Alfred Barnard, after having wisited 162 Whiskey disitilleries in Britain in order to publish a book, embarked on a similar tour on breweries, which resulted in the work, of which separate printings of certain chapters have been produced, usually for the owners and sharholders of the businesses. - What Grimsby had was certainly not a micro-brewery; the malt industry was impressive, with companies running their own steamers for barley import. No. 1 Malting 'is by far the largest of any malting floor that we have seen in the couse of our travels,' Barnard pays his respect on p. 35. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fort Assinniboine, Montana Collection of Photographs

Set of seven albumen photographs of Fort Assinniboine, Montana taken from the 1870s to 1890. Only two photographs have H. G. Klenze imprints on verso, the rest are unmarked. All are mounted and measure between 9" x 5 ½" and 10" x 8" (including mounts) ; four mounts are dark brown with gilt edges, Klenze imprints are on two of these, and three mounts are buff, one with manuscript title underneath photo. Conditions range from good to very good. All photographs have light soiling and light wear to edges; some have light silvering; all mounts have light wear and creasing to all edges and moderate soiling and toning on verso; the corner of one mount is bent and has a 3" crease affecting photograph; a different photo/mount is missing the bottom right corner, including a 1" portion of the photo. Almost all images have good contrast and detail. Imprints read: "H. G Klenze. Post Photographer, Fort Assinniboine, M. T. Photographs of noted Indian Chiefs. Views of Western Scenery" and H. G Klenze. Photographer, Fort Assinniboine, M. T." Some of Klenze's earlier imprints state that he was successor to David F. Barry, a prolific photographer in the Dakota Territory. Photographs in this collection depict a square with officers' quarters on the right, enlisted men's quarters on the left, views showing the soldiers lined up in formation, armed with bayonets and rifles, relaxed scenes of soldiers posed on a stairway, and a sawmill located behind the officers' quarters. Like all military forts, the grounds and structures were continually rebuilt, with at least two time periods represented in these photographs. Four photographs represent the Fort when it had many whitewashed buildings and a boardwalk. The other three clearly represent a later time, likely 1880s to 1890s. The brick octagonal structure of the officers' quarters, located on the right side of one photograph is known to be built in 1880. The size and scale of Fort Assinniboine's military post and 220,000-acre military reservation established it as one of the most massive in the United States. At one time 750 officers, enlisted men and civilians resided at the post. "Between 1879 and 1903, Fort Assinniboine served as a key component of a national military strategy to secure the International Border with Canada with respect to an overall policy of intimidation and containment of Native American nations" (Montana State Historical Society). The Fort influenced national Indian policy, in particular the Cree, Metis, Blackfeet, and Sioux nations, and impacted the lifeways of those native populations. This is a historically important collection documenting the evolution of an important military base. .

        In Darkest Africa

New York: Scribner's, 1890 Two volumes. xv, 529 pp; xv, 472 pp. 6 etchings, 150 woodcut illustrations and maps, 2 facsimiles of pages from Stanley's notebooks, 2 large folding color maps mounted on linen. Original half dark brown morocco, vellum boards stamped in gilt. Some wear and soiling. Very good. EDITION DE LUXE, one of 250 large paper copies signed by Stanley. This beautiful production is superior in every respect, including the quality of the binding, the paper, and the illustrations, to the ordinary trade edition. Stanley, best remembered for finding Dr. Livingstone, was the greatest journalist-explorer of the nineteenth century. This book tells the harrowing story of his third expedition to central Africa, facing nearly insurmountable obstacles and dangers passing through the almost impenetrable jungle of the great Congo Forest. Stanley set off with 646 men but only 246 survived. The expedition helped lead to the foundation of British East Africa, and in along the way, the Ruwenzori mountain range and Lake Albert Edward Nyanza were discovered.
