Village Boys & Their Amusements. [Album of 18 pen and ink drawings]

N.p. [Cookham, England] 1889 - Pen and ink on paper, each of the 18 drawings titled opposite (two-page spreads title in the drawing). One inserted sketch on a folded leaf, annotated on verso in the hand of the recipient. 1 vols. Oblong 12mo. Rural Fun in Cookham, 1889. Album of drawings from the pen of William G. Spencer of Cookham, Berkshire. Opposite the title leaf is a dedication "A.D.C. with love from William Spencer June 1889". The scenes depict a year's worth of rural amusements: "Snow-balling," "[Field] Hockey," "Football," "Leapfrog," "Marbles," "A Running Race," "Merry Anglers," "Rounders on Cookham Moor," "Quoits," "The School Great," "Punch & Judy," "The Paper Chase" (two-page spread), "Tug of War," "The Village Drum & Fife Band," "Merry Archers," "Cricket. The Winning Run. Great Excitement" (two-page spread), Guy Fawkes Day," and "On the Ice" [signed "W.G.S. 1889"].The annotation on a loosely inserted sketch of a rustic "with the sun in one hand and a watering-pot in the other" identifies the artist as William Spencer "as a boy" and is signed "A. D. Coleridge." Arthur Duke Coleridge (1830-1913) was clerk of assizes on the Midland circuit and author of Eton in the Forties, by an old Colleger (1896); and Reminiscences (1921), edited by J.A. Fuller-Maitland.William Spencer (1846-1928), "Pa," was a music teacher and organist who lived at Fernlea in Cookham and was father of eight children, and "was described by an acquaintance as 'a patriarchal figure who cycled around Cookham reciting Ruskin aloud'"(ODNB). His eldest son William, the artist of this album, was a child prodigy pianist who went on to become a professor at the Bern Music Institute. William "most certainly was a draughtsman. Indeed he had to decide between a career in art or one in music, and decided on music ? My feeling is that both [Pa and Will] may have been associated with the London Bach Choir which A.D. Coleridge helped set up in 1875" (Ken Pople, personal communication, 2006).William's two younger brothers were British artists Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) and Gilbert Spencer (1893-1979); all received an unconventional late Victorian education at home. Stanley spent much of his life in the village of Cookham, where the Stanley Spencer Gallery is now maintained in his memory.Unusual and interesting. Black morocco backed notebook, ticket of J. Tillyer & Co., Oxford. Binding broken, spine perished, internally fine Pen and ink on paper, each of the 18 drawings titled opposite (two-page spreads title in the drawing). One inserted sketch on a folded leaf, annotated on verso in the hand of the recipient. 1 vols. Oblong 12mo [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Nursery "Alice" containing twenty coloured enlargements from Tenniel's Illustrations to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with text adapted to nursery readers.

London: Macmillan and Co. 1889 - Quarto. Original white cloth-backed pictorial boards, titles to front cover in red and black, orange endpapers. Wear to corners and head and foot of spine, spine darkened, some light foxing to preliminaries, some internal finger marks, diagonal crease to page 36. Mechanical enlargements of 20 of John Tenniel's illustrations, enlarged from the originals and printed in colour; text printed in brown ink. Cover illustrations by E. G. Thomson. First edition, first impression, third state, with the original illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on page 34 with Alice's profile visible, overpriced with two shillings on the title page. Genuinely rare thus: copies are overwhelmingly met within the second printing. Ten thousand copies of the first print run were printed by Edward Evans on toned paper. Dodgson rejected the entire edition in sheets as the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy" and instructed they should be reprinted. The casings prepared had Alice asleep beneath a tree on the front cover and a picture of the March Hare on the back. Four thousand copies of the rejected sheets were sent to the States and the book was published with a tipped-in preliminary leaf and title page dated 1890. In 1891 after the publication of the reprinted edition, some of the original copies were bound up and overprinted "People's Edition, Price Two Shillings" on the title page, as is this copy.         Autograph letter signed. Paris, 8. XII. 1889.

1889. 8vo. 1 p. In French, to an unidentified artist. Zola advises his correspondent to speak directly with his publisher, M. Charpentier, about his drawings because "I have very little time and prefer not to become involved in this question of illustrations. I have always thought that the best thing to do is to leave an artist free to interpret a book, as he likes. Zola adds that he does not intend to write a novel about the 1870 war for another two years". - The drawings to which Zola refers were probably meant to illustrate his novel Le Rêve, an edition of which was published in 1892 with illustrations by Carlos Schwabe and Lucien Métivet. Zola s novel about the 1870 war, La Débâcle, was also published in 1892.

A Narrative Of Travels On the Amazon And Rio Negro, with An Account of the Native Tribes and Observations on the Climate, Geology, And Natural History of the Amazon Valley.

Ward, Lock, And Co,, London 1889 - Edited by G.T. Bettany MA,BSc, ix+363 pp ; complete with the frontispiece of author,map,14 full-page illustrations and biographical introduction by the editor. Full red school prize calf binding, outer edge gilt dentelles, six gilt decorated raised band compartments, gilt titled green morocco label on spine, gilt decorated embossed medallion of New College, Box Hill lon front cover, school prize award label Xmas 1891 on front paste down, marbled edges and endpapers.Very small binder's name stamp on endpaper. This second edition was initiated and produced as part of Ward's Minerva Library of Famous Books. Ward astutely employed Bettany's scientific and literary knowledge to revise proof sheets of the original work and its readability. Bettany confirmed Wallace as the" co -discoverer with Mr. Darwin of the principal of natural selection as the main agent in the evolution of species." " What deserves repeating and emphasising" he writes "is that Mr. Wallace must rank as a completely independent and original discoverer of the essential feature of the "Origin of Species". He describes Wallace as" in divergence" from Darwin in one important point:" the limits of natural selection as applied to man." Such a divergence, coupled with the former Leicester schoolmaster's intrepid exploration and observations over four years account for the choice by many schools of Bettany's edition as a school prize.         The Nursery Alice First Edition, 1889 by Lewis Carroll

In an interesting preface Lewis Carroll comments that he wanted to have an edition of Alice in Wonderland that was read, or rather, "to be thumbed, to be cooed over, to be dogs-eared, to be kissed" by children aged from "Nought to Five". This edition of The Nursery Alice was complied with simpler and larger text. It also contains coloured mechanical enlargements of twenty of the original John Tenniel illustrations. The original 10,000 copies were printed by Edmund Short but were rejected by Dodgson as they were 'far too bright and gaudy', so were reprinted. 12 copies were specially bound unpriced as samples for the American market. 4000 were sent over to America (known as the 2nd state). 6000 then overprinted with 'People's Edition' and priced 'two shillings'. Finally the few sets of sheets left over were 'sold off cheap' priced one shilling. This edition is known as the 4th issue and is very scarce. Illustrated glazed paper boards with cloth strip spine. Pictorial design of Alice asleep and dreaming beneath a tree signed E. G. Thompson. The rear cover has a picture of the March Hare in the center and the initials E. G. T. Cream endpapers with owner's inscription dated "1898" on front free page. Coloured frontpiece with tissue guard. Title page has One Shilling overprinted with an ornamental bar over the earlier price of Three Shillings. Therefore noted as the 4th 1897 issue. A Nursery Darling poem. Preface and Contents with 16 chapters. A few pencil marks within the text. Otherwise colours and pages are clean. An Easter Greeting, Christmas Greetings and 2 pages of other works of Lewis Carroll advertised at the end of the book. 10 x 73/4". 4to. 56 printed pages of the story.

A slightly later inscription on the flyleaf identifies this album as that of Edith Elkington: "Aunt Edith's voyage home to England about 1889". - Some foxing and waterstaining, but prints largely clean.

[10],134pp., printed in double columns. 1 vols. Small oblong 4to (9 x 6-5/8 inches). Presentation copy of an American sporting and Western American photographically-illustrated rarity.A series of twenty-five delightful letters written by Francis, the owner of the Troy Daily Times, describing "the experience of a little party of trojans, who inspired by a common fondness for hunting and fishing, determined to journey to the great Northwest in search of game, fish, and adventure" (Preface). The author and three unnamed friends started for the Northwest in August, 1888, for a glorified hunting and fishing trip in the mountains and lakes of Montana. The narrative describes the settlements and settlers encountered, including the Indians, principally Blackfeet. The narrative was first printed serially in the Troy Daily Times and subsequently printed in this very small edition, illustrated with original photographs, for presentation. The remarkable photographs represent a vivid and important photographic record of Montana at the time. Included are photographs of towns, ranches, Indian agencies, Indians (including Cree, Blackfoot, and Piegan), portraits, landscapes, camp scenes, and other fine views. "The photographs are by the author himself and constitute an immensely important record of the Far Northwest, its towns, ranches, Indians, agencies, etc. The narrative is one of surpassing interest, describing the outfitting at Great Falls; the Baker Massacre; Trapper Bill Weaver; Piegan Indians; the Big Horn; Starvation Camp; western horses and Indian ponies; horse thieves; Blackfoot Agency; life among the Indians; cattle ranges and ranches; Great Falls, its mushroom growth, future, etc. The volume is a veritable 'book of the plains' -- a home-made production in make-up and appearance, and one of the most sought of all books relating to Montana (Eberstadt). This example a presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author on a front blank: "Mr. John Boetcher, with the compliments of Charles S. Francis. Troy, Aug. 15, 1889." A great Montana rarity, and one of the finest of 19th-century photographically illustrated books of the West.
