FRESNO CALIFORNIA. Subdivision of the Fruit Vale Estate. Farms of 10 to 160 Acres Each in the Fruit Vale Estate.; Briggs Fergusson & Co. General Agents, Fruit Vale Estate

San Francisco: H. S. Crocker Co. Lith, 1889. 1st printing. Not in Rocq, though see 1863 for a similarly titled work of 47 pages. Original publisher's full color lithographed paper wrappers, stapled. Colors bright & vibrant. Light extremity wear, with wrappers split along bottom 2" of the spine. A pleasing Very Good [or better] copy.. Unpaginated, though 8 pages. Text printed by Bacon and Company, Printers, San Francisco. Map of 'Fruit Vale Estate', p. 8. 10-3/8" x 4-1/2" One of Kearney's promotional brochures that launched a thousand raisins, this the prospectus for M. Theo. Kearney's real estate subdivision and lot sale in his Fruit Vale estate, Fresno County, California. These lots were some of the most fertile in the San Joaquin Valley when they were offered for sale in March 1889 by Kearney, through the San Francisco firm of Briggs, Fergusson & Co. A decade earlier, Kearney had developed the first colony farm in Fresno county and specified that his new tract of land would be for raisin cultivation, the agribusiness he pioneered. Subsequently known as the "Raisin King of Fresno," Kearney relished his 'royal' standing, planning to build a grand five-story French influenced castle on his Fruit Vale property. Called Chateau Fresno (pictured on the rear wrapper), Kearney lived only to see the foundation laid. Construction was abandoned after his death. This brochure primarily a sales vehicle for Kearney's lots, giving the details of the sale, as well as information on Fresno of the late 1880s, along with testimonials as to the worth of the land being offered & its locale. The front wrapper depicts a view of late 19th C America's middle class emergiing dream: a neat, embowered farmhouse in an orchard, suggesting that the ideal farm can be obtained by buying a Fruit Vale lot. In blatant contrast, on the rear wrapper, is Kearney's grand vision of his to-be-built Chateau Fresno, sitting resplendently amidst cultivated - not agricultural - plants in the flat plain of Fresno... a perfect foil to the modest home on the front wrapper. No copies found on OCLC. Rare.

Haag, Nijhoff, 1888-1889. - Folio (284 x 378 mm). One volume of plates: 4 chromolithogr. plates (conjoined as 2), 6 (1 double-sized) toned lithogr. plates, and 65 mounted photographs on a total of 40 plates; 1 letterpress leaf of contents. Contemp. half cloth portfolio with cover title. Without the two text volumes; instead includes the English translation in its first edition: Mekka in the Latter Part of the 19th Century. Leyden & London, E. J. Brill & Luzac, 1931. 8vo. VI, 309, (3) pp. With 20 half-tone plates, folding plan of Mecca, and plan of the Haram. Original blue cloth. Remarkable set issued in merely 100 copies: the rare plate volume to accompany the author's two-volume "Mekka" but usually lacking from the text volumes. (Here, these are present in the first English edition.) A respected Dutch orientalist and scholar, Snouck Hurgronje was a key figure in the early history of the photography of Mecca, one of the first non-Arab photographers of the Hijaz. In 1884, Hurgronje was given leave of absence from his teaching post in Leiden in order to travel in Arabia. After an initial five months in Jeddah, he moved on to Mecca, arriving there in February 1885. Hurgronje stayed in the Holy City for approximately six months, during which time he converted to Islam, adopted the name Abdul Ghaffar and generally immersed himself in local customs and traditions. However, in August 1883, Hurgronje was accused of attempting to steal the Tayma Stone and was banished. On his return to Leiden, he published numerous works on Mecca and its inhabitants, including this important photographic monograph. The images, taken by himself and an Arabic physician, are among the earliest to show Mecca and its pilgrims. - Stamp of the "Indische genootschap" (Indies Society of the Netherlands) on index leaf and upper cover of portfolio. An edge tear to the mount of plate XXXVI. The vintage photographs, much sought as the earliest photographic documents of the city, its dignitaries and its pilgrims, are preserved in perfect condition. Macro 1239, omitting mention of the Atlas (& 1238 for the English text). Henze V, 177. Dinse 443. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Master of Ballantrae

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1889. First edition. Near Fine. First issue with July, 1889 ads. A Near Fine copy of the book, with the spine panel a trifle darkened and slight wear at the spine ends and corners, but well above average. Inner contents in excellent condition, without repair or restoration. Stevenson's exciting novel of familial conflict and adventure set amidst the Jacobite rebellion of the mid 18th century. Stevenson wrote the book while travelling extensively in the US and the Pacific, including to San Francisco, Hawaii, and Tahiti, and indeed the conclusion of the book features an exciting and memorable confrontation in the American wilderness. Though Stevenson was highly regarded in the late 19th century -- and was one of the most popular authors of the period -- with the rise of modernism his star began to fall. In the second half of the 20th century, however, his reputation was rehabilitated, with such famed authors as Nabokov and Borges counting themselves fans. The Master of Ballantrae was adapted into a 1953 film, starring Errol Flynn. "…we have no hesitation in saying Mr. Stevenson surpasses all his former performances. In our opinion there are very few novels which so nearly approach perfection." (Contemporary review in the Times of London). Near Fine.

Entwickelung der Gesetze des menschlichen Verkehrs, und der darau fliessenden Regeln für menschliches Handeln.

Berlin: R. L. Prager,, 1889. Octavo (213 x 133 mm). Contemporary half pebble grain calf and marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt, sprinkled edges. Numerous figures and tables in the text. Zürich bookbinder's ticket to front pastedown. Joints lightly rubbed, preliminary leaves slightly toned, very occasional pale spotting; an excellent copy. Re-issue of the first edition sheets, originally published in Brunswick in 1854 at the author's own expense, here with new half title and title page and a leaf of prefatory text by the publisher. "Gossen, though perhaps not quite a genius, had a brilliant, original, and precise mind. With his one book, he moved constrained optimization into the centre of the theory of value and allocation, where it has since remained. With respect to economic content, his was probably the greatest single contribution to this theory in the 19th century. He failed, however, to develop the basic principle into a usable analytical engine. As a consequence, the so-called 'founders' of the modern theory of value had to rediscover those principles before they could proceed with their engineering work" (Jürg Niehans in The New Palgrave 2). The work is an attempt to found economics on a mathematical basis, and the author regarded his services in the reform of the method of the science as similar to those of Copernicus in astronomy. The work, which had generally been overlooked even in Germany (it is not mentioned in Roscher's History), was only brought to public attention when Jevons gave an account of it in the preface to the second edition of his Theory of political economy (1872).

FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

JACKSONVILLE, TAMPA & KEY-WEST SYSTEM. FLORIDA. Corrected to April 11, 1889

DaCosta Prg. and Pub. House, Jacksonville, Florida 1889 - Single printed sheet of yellow paper, folded 6x, to form a 24 panel brochure. Woodcut of a JT&KW locomotive to front panel. 3-panel JT&KW route map in Florida. Unfolded: 19-7/8"x 14-1/8". Folded: 7-1/8" x 3-1/4" "The Tampa, Peace Creek and St. Johns River Railroad was incorporated in 1879, and on June 27, 1881 the name was changed to the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway. The Palatka and Indian River Railroad was incorporated in 1881 to run from Palatka south past Sanford. The JT&KW bought it in 1887. Eventually the JT&KW main line stretched from Jacksonville to the St. Johns River port of Sanford, where the separately-owned South Florida Railroad continued to Tampa. The full line opened on February 20, 1886.The Atlantic Coast, St. Johns and Indian River Railroad was organized in 1883 to build a connection from the JT&KW's branch to Enterprise, another St. Johns River port, southeast to Titusville on the Indian River. The JT&KW acquired the line in 1886.The Jupiter and Lake Worth Railway opened in 1889 as a short connection between the JT&KW's Indian River Steamboat Company at Jupiter and the north end of Lake Worth, where steamers continued south. The line was abandoned by 1896 after the completion of the parallel Florida East Coast Railway. In 1893 the JT&KW went bankrupt." [Wiki].This a rare travel brochure/train schedule for this relatively short-lived Florida-based railway system. OCLC locates just 2 similar items in single copies, one from 1891, one from 1892. A fragile item, with wear along the folds, with the occasional short split. About Very Good. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
