Berlin: R. L. Prager,, 1889. Octavo (213 x 133 mm). Contemporary half pebble grain calf and marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt, sprinkled edges. Numerous figures and tables in the text. Zürich bookbinder's ticket to front pastedown. Joints lightly rubbed, preliminary leaves slightly toned, very occasional pale spotting; an excellent copy. Re-issue of the first edition sheets, originally published in Brunswick in 1854 at the author's own expense, here with new half title and title page and a leaf of prefatory text by the publisher. "Gossen, though perhaps not quite a genius, had a brilliant, original, and precise mind. With his one book, he moved constrained optimization into the centre of the theory of value and allocation, where it has since remained. With respect to economic content, his was probably the greatest single contribution to this theory in the 19th century. He failed, however, to develop the basic principle into a usable analytical engine. As a consequence, the so-called 'founders' of the modern theory of value had to rediscover those principles before they could proceed with their engineering work" (Jürg Niehans in The New Palgrave 2). The work is an attempt to found economics on a mathematical basis, and the author regarded his services in the reform of the method of the science as similar to those of Copernicus in astronomy. The work, which had generally been overlooked even in Germany (it is not mentioned in Roscher's History), was only brought to public attention when Jevons gave an account of it in the preface to the second edition of his Theory of political economy (1872).

FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

The Periodic Law of the Chemical Elements" in Journal of the Chemical Society, Vol. 55 [Transactions], 1889, pp. 634-656

FIRST EDITION OF MENDELEEV'S FIRST PRESENTATION TO AN ENGLISH AUDIENCE OF HIS SEMINAL WORK ON THE PERIODIC TABLE. RARE. Mendeleev presented his periodic table depicting the relation between the properties and atomic weights of the elements for the first time to an English audience on June 4th, 1889 as a Faraday Lecture delivered before the Fellows of the Chemical Society in the Theatre of the Royal Institution; later that year, the lecture was then published in its entirety in this volume of Journal of the Chemical Society. Bound with the volume is a large fold-out plate of the periodic table Mendeleev displayed as he spoke. This is a unique offering. It is not an English reprint of Mendeleev's famed 1869 work. By 1889, the date of the lecture, while the periodic system had become widely accepted, there was as yet no physical basis for Mendeleev's argument or for the periodic system of chemical elements that he had devised. This makes the lecture of particular import: it is a very detailed "review of the periodic system by its foremost proponent AFTER its validity and utility had been established BUT BEFORE its foundations had been explored" (Lemoyne College Web Portal, Elements and Atoms). Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907) was a Russian inventor and chemist "whose name will always be linked with his outstanding achievement, the development of the periodic table. He was the first chemist to understand that all elements are related members of a single ordered system. He converted what had hitherto been a highly fragmented and speculative branch of chemistry into a true, logical science. "According to Mendeleyev the properties of the elements, as well as those of their compounds, are periodic functions of their atomic weights (relative atomic masses). In 1869, he stated that 'the elements arranged according to the magnitude of atomic weights show a periodic change of properties'… Mendeleyev compiled the first true periodic table, listing all 63 elements then known… Also, in order to make the table work [he left] gaps, [predicting] that further elements would eventually be discovered to fit these predictions provided the strongest endorsement of the periodic law" (Hutchinson, Dictionary of Scientific Biography, pp. 475-76). "Mendeleev's genius lay in recognizing that just as it was the element in the abstract sense that survived intact in the course of compound formation, so atomic weight was the only quantity that survived in measurable amounts. He therefore took the step of associating these two features: an element was to be characterized by its atomic weight. In a sense an abstract element had acquired a single measurable attribute that would remain unchanged in all its chemical combinations. Here, then, was a profound justification for using atomic weight as the basis for the classification of the elements" (Scerri, Selected Papers on the Periodic Table, 114).         Arithmetices Principia Nova Methodo Exposita.

Turin, Bocca, 1889. 8vo. Uncut and unopened in the original printed wrappers. Minor lack of paper at spine and a few small marginal nicks with tiny loss to extremities to front wrapper. Discreet repair to lower part of spine, otherwise untouched and unrestored. Some dampstaining. XVI,20 pp. The scarce first printing of this milestone work of mathematics and logic, Peano's seminal main work, in which he presents the groundbreaking Peano axioms and thus the first statement of his famous postulates for the natural numbers, which remain of seminal importance to mathematics and mathematical logic. "On the basis of his axiomatization, Peano constructed the entire theory of natural numbers. In particular, he showed how the elementary theorems of arithmetic can be obtained from his axioms." (Styazhkin, p. 279).With the logical notations that Peano created to present the axioms in the present work, he fundamentally changed the language of mathematical logic and provided the genesis of the modern notation for set membership (Peano's epsylon-symbol) and implication (Peano's reversed C), fundamental symbols that have been used nearly unchanged ever since their appearance in this paper. "The logical part of the work presents formulas of the propositional calculus of classes, and a few of quantification theory. Peano's notation is quite superior to Boole and Schröder, and it marks and important transition toward modern logic." (Heijenoort, p. 84) "[W]ith the publication of "Arithmetices principia, nova methodo exposita" Peano not only improved his logical symbolism but also used his new method to achieve important new results in mathematics; this short booklet contains Peano's first statement of his famous postulates for the natural numbers, perhaps the best known of all his creations. His research was done independently of the work of Dedekind, who the previous year had published an analysis of the natural numbers, which was essentially that of Peano but without the clarity of Peano. (This work was the only work Peano wrote in Latin.). "Arithmetices principia" made important innovations in logical notation, such as [epsilon symbol] for set membership and a new notation for universal quantification. Indeed, much of Peano's notation found its way, either directly or in a somewhat modified form, into mid-twentieth-century logic." (Kennedy, in D.S.B., X: 442)."Peano's most important contribution to the development of the theory and practice of the axiomatic method was his system of axioms for the arithmetic of the natural numbers (1889, 1895)..." (Styazhkin, p. 278).The famous Italian mathematician, logical philosopher, pioneer of symbolic logic, and a founder of mathematical logic and set theory, Giuseppe Peano (1858 -1932) studied mathematics at the University of Turin, where he was employed just after graduating (1880), and where he stayed almost all of his life, devoting this to mathematics. After having graduated with honours, he was employed to assist first Enrico D'Ovidio, and then the renowned Angelo Genocchi, who possessed the chair of Infinitesimal calculus. In 1890 Peano became extraordinary professor, and in 1895 ordinary professor, of infinitesimal calculus at the Unversity of Turin. hIS "Principles of Arithmetics" (the present work) constitutes his groundbreaking main work. A Source Book in Mathematical Logic, 1879-1931. In which the present work by Peano is printed (in translation, with an introduction) as the second, after Frege's "Begriffsschrift".Cellerino (Guiseppe Peano e la sua scuola.

[Linton, William James- Small Archive of Letters to William Bell Scott] Four letters, 13 pages

Offered here is a small archive of four ALS by W. J. Linton, noted wood-engraver, painter, political reformer and poet, who befriended William Bell Scott and, after Scott's death, became close friend and confidant to Alice Boyd, Scott's live-in lover, of Penkyll Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. Fascinating grouping of 12 total pages, written in Linton's fairly small script, on smallish folded 12mo sheets. An abundance of topics and concerns discussed, including the new book Linton had been working on, ("Poems and Translations, 1889, J. C. Nimmo), giving accounts of participants responsible for production including Nimmo and Bullen: "I asked young Bullen to propose them [manuscript] to Nimmo, knowing him to have weight- on account of his dramatic editing. He, or Nimmo, preferred a selection from these and from Levelore and Claribel. Literally penniless, living by help of Will, as Nimmo offered fair 'payment,' and did not care to cave at his suggestion... so that the book is absolutely of Bullen's choices, and the getting up absolutely Nimmo's..." etc. etc. A rich source for mining.
