[The essential chart for navigating the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River].

Shanghai: Xiu hai shan fang shu ju, Guangxu 15 [1889]. Two volumes, oblong 8vo, pp. [9], [53] of charts, [4]; pp. [7], [44] of charts, [5]; a very good copy, printed on double leaves, stitched, as issued, Chinese-style in thin blue paper wrappers, titles on paper labels to front wrappers, in the original blue silk-covered folding case. First edition of the first comprehensive survey of the "Three Gorges" of the Yangtze, with a splendid panoramic pictorial map of the river, its course shown from the lower part of the river to the upper reaches; printed continuously on 97 pages, with the complete itinerary from Yichang in Hubei Province to Kuifo (first volume) and from Kuifo to Chongquing, both in Sichuan Province (second volume). The first complete and systematic navigational chart of this famous stretch of water, the map shows both banks of the river in profile, with detailed information on the gorges, including names and locations of towns and villages (some of which are now completely submerged), details of the tidal flows, distances between key points, prominent identifying features and information on hazards such as rocks and whirlpools. Descriptions of the upstream and downstream itineraries are also present, at the beginning and end of each volume. Several times reprinted, this original edition is of importance as the first comprehensive survey of the Three Gorges before the use of modern surveying techniques, while its illustrations of the settlements and geological features of the gorges provide an important record of a section of the Yangtze which can no longer be visited: the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in 2008 closed the river to small craft navigation and obliterated entire settlements. The hugely controversial project flooded archaeological and cultural sites, displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological change. Some occasional light foxing, but a very good copy, wrappers slightly worn at edges, the folding case rubbed at extremities, preserving one of two bone clasps; a few leaves at the beginning of the second volume clumsily opened.

        Arithmetices Principia Nova Methodo Exposita.

Bocca Brothers, Turin 1889 - First edition, very rare in any condition but especially so in the original printed wrappers, of Peano?s most important work, which contains the first statement of the famous ?Peano axioms? for the natural numbers and which remains of seminal importance to mathematics and mathematical logic. ?Peano?s most important contribution to the development of the theory and practice of the axiomatic method was his system of axioms for the arithmetic of the natural numbers? On the basis of his axiomatization, Peano constructed the entire theory of natural numbers. In particular, he showed how the elementary theorems of arithmetic can be obtained from his axioms? (Styazhkin, History of Mathematical Logic from Leibniz to Peano, 1969, pp. 278-9). ?? with the publication of Arithmetices principia, nova methodo exposita, Peano not only improved his logical symbolism but also used his new method to achieve important new results in mathematics; this short booklet contains Peano?s first statement of his famous postulates for the natural numbers, perhaps the best known of all his creations. His research was done independently of the work of Dedekind, who the previous year had published an analysis of the natural numbers, which was essentially that of Peano but without the clarity of Peano. (This work was the only work Peano wrote in Latin.). Arithmetices principia made important innovations in logical notation, such as Î for set membership and a new notation for universal quantification. Indeed, much of Peano?s notation found its way, either directly or in a somewhat modified form, into mid-twentieth-century logic? (DSB). No copies listed on ABPC/RBH.?Written in Latin, this small book was Peano?s first attempt at an axiomatization of mathematics in a symbolic language ? after having introduced logical notations and formulas, Peano undertakes to rewrite arithmetic in symbolic notation. But he aspires to more than just the provision of a correct logical foundation for arithmetic: the book deals also with fractions, real numbers, and even the notion of limit and definitions in point-set theory? The initial arithmetic notions are ?number,? ?one,? ?successor? and ?is equal to,? and nine axioms are stated concerning these notions. Today we would consider that Axioms 2, 3, 4 and 5, which deal with identity, belong to the underlying logic. That leaves the five axioms that have become universally known as ?the Peano axioms?? The ease with which we read Peano?s booklet today shows how much of his notation has found its way, either directly or in a somewhat modified form, into contemporary logic? (van Heijenoort, pp. 83-4). Peano?s axioms were subsequently modified and republished by their creator in the five successive versions of his Formulaire and finally perfected in Whitehead and Russell?s Principia Mathematica.?Peano?s Arithmetices principia not only deals with the natural numbers. Having presented all of the basic arithmetical operations, Peano goes on to discuss several topics in order to ?better show the power of this [new] method? First he offers a selection of number-theoretical results (without proof, art. 7) and then he introduces the rational and the real numbers. The rationals are rendered as ratios of two natural numbers (art. 8), the reals as formal ?limits? of sets of rationals, essentially following Dedekind?s definition by means of cuts (art. 9) ? Finally, art. 10 discusses basic results in the topology of the real numbers, belonging to the theory of ?what Cantor calls Punktmenge (ensemble de points)?, on the basis of the concepts of interior, exterior and limit point. Some of these results were new? (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, 1640-1940, pp. 622-3).Peano exerted a profound influence on Bertrand Russell and his work on the foundations of mathematics. ?Principia Mathematica had its origins in Russell?s discovery of the work of Peano at the International Congress of Philosophy held in Paris in the summer of 1900, which Peano [Attributes: First Edition]

        Address in Surgery.

Melbourne: Stillwell & Co. 1889. Octavo, 23 pp., some foxing, old fold, and manuscript postal address and postmarks (1889), where the pamphlet has been mailed from South Australia to New South Wales; in the original printed wrappers, rather spotted and worn,?ink stain to head of front wrapper. Unusual offprint, rare. This lecture by Stirling is printed from the Intercolonial Medical Congress of Australasia Transactions, from their second session in Melbourne, January 1889. Although not in pristine condition, this is a particularly rare pamphlet, not listed in Ferguson. The pamphlet prints an "Address in Surgery" by Edward C. Stirling, Surgeon to the Adelaide Hospital and lecturer at the University of Adelaide. Stirling was born in 1848 at Strathalbyn, South Australia. Educated at Cambridge, and sometime lecturer at St George's Hospital, London, he returned to South Australia in 1875. He had a long and varied career, which included a stint as the member for North Adelaide, a crossing of the continent from south to north with the Earl of Kintore in 1891, and work as the medical officer and anthropologist with the important William Horn expedition in 1894. A long note in the Australian Dictionary of Biography shows the breadth of his interests: he was actively associated with the Public Library, the Art Gallery, the Zoological Society, the Adelaide Hospital and the State Children's Council, dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 1908-19 and president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in South Australia. He participated in the long struggle to secure Flinders Chase on Kangaroo Island as a sanctuary. In 1917 Stirling was knighted; he died two years later.Attractively, the work was considered of such interest that one "J. von Düring" has sent the pamphlet through the Australian posts to "E. Chisholm" M.D., of Victoria Street in Ashfield, New South Wales. Hence the old fold running lengthwise along the book, as well as the address details and various postmarks to the back wrapper: two are sadly illegible, but the third is still clear: "Southern Railway S.A. Au 22 89".Although various copies of the Transactions proper are held, this offprint is not in Ferguson, and not known to have been acquired by any Australian institutions since. Interestingly, several other offprints from the same Melbourne congress of 1889, and also printed by Stillwell, are known: Jamieson, On want of proportion in the signs and symptoms of diseases of the heart and great vessels; Marano, On pneumatic therapeutics by means of the portable apparatus; Grant, A Case of Raynaud's Disease.

Certains G. Moreau - Degas - Chéret - Whistler - Rops - Le Monstre - Le Fer, etc

Tresse et Stock, 1889. demi-chagrin brun à nerfs, tête or, non rogné, couverture  Édition originale. Superbe envoi a. s. Bel exemplaire.

        Arithmetices Principia Nova Methodo Exposita.

Turin: Bocca Brothers, 1889. First edition, very rare in any condition but especially so in the original printed wrappers, of Peano's most important work, which contains the first statement of the famous 'Peano axioms' for the natural numbers and which remains of seminal importance to mathematics and mathematical logic. Some of these results were new" (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, 1640-1940, pp. 622-3). Peano exerted a profound influence on Bertrand Russell and his work on the foundations of mathematics. "Principia Mathematica had its origins in Russell's discovery of the work of Peano at the International Congress of Philosophy held in Paris in the summer of 1900, which Peano and his supporters attended in force. To that time Russell had been working for several years attempting to develop a satisfactory philosophy of mathematics. Despite some philosophical successes ... a satisfactory outcome had always eluded him. At the conference, however, he very quickly realized that the Peano school had a set of techniques of which he could make use, and on his return from the conference he immediately set about applying them. As a result, he quickly rewrote The Principles of Mathematics, which he had started in 1899, finishing the new version by the end of the year. It was published, after some delay and substantial revisions of Part I, in 1903, billed as the first of two volumes. It was intended as a philosophical introduction to, and defence of, the logicist program that all mathematical concepts could be defined in terms of logic and that all mathematical theorems could be derived from purely logical axioms. It was to be followed by a second volume, done in Peano's notation, in which the logicist program would actually be carried out by providing the requisite definitions and proofs. At about the same time that Russell was finishing The Principles of Mathematics, he began the collaboration with his former teacher, Whitehead, that produced, many years later, Principia Mathematica" (The Palgrave Centenary Companion to Principia Mathematica, p. xvi). That this pamphlet was written Latin reveals a concern of Peano's: international accessibility. It was so important to him that he later devoted much of his time to the cause of the auxiliary international language, Interlingua. "In his mathematical writing, addressed to mathematicians at large, Peano changed over early on from his own language of Italian to French, which is more widely known; but even French is not fully international, and he looked back with regret to the time, not so very distant, when Latin had been the universal language of scholars" (Kneebone, Mathematical Logic and the Foundations of Mathematics, 1963, p. 149). Kennedy (Life and Works of Giuseppe Peano, p. 41), however, suggests that both the title and the language of composition were acts "of sheer romanticism, perhaps the unique romantic act of his scientific career". The Greek Arithmetices was perhaps meant to evoke Euclid, while Principia may have been a tribute to Newton. And writing in French, with which Peano was certainly familiar, would have made the book even more accessible to an international audience. Giuseppe Peano (1858-1932) "became a lecturer of infinitesimal calculus at the University of Turin in 1884 and a professor in 1890. He also held the post of professor at the Academia Militare in Turin from 1886 to 1901. Peano made several important discoveries, including a continuous mapping of a line onto every point of a square, that were highly counterintuitive and convinced him that mathematics should be developed formally if mistakes were to be avoided. His Formulaire de mathématiques (Italian Formulario mathematico, "Mathematical Formulary"), published from 1894 to 1908 with collaborators, was intended to develop mathematics in its entirety from its fundamental postulates, using Peano's logical notation and his simplified international language... Peano is also known as the creator of Latino sine Flexione, an artificial language later called Interlingua. Based on a synthesis of Latin, French, German, and English vocabularies, with a greatly simplified grammar, Interlingua was intended for use as an international auxiliary language. Peano compiled a Vocabulario de Interlingua (1915) and was for a time president of the Academia pro Interlingua" (Britannica). DSB X: 442; Jean van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel. A Source Book in Mathematical Logic, 1879-1931 (this work contains an English translation, with introduction, of the Arithmetices Principia - the second work in the collection, after Frege's Begriffsschrift). 8vo (240 x 159 mm), pp. [xvi], 20. Original printed wrappers, corners and margin with minor chipping, lower part of spine strip with an old amatuer repair, spine strip very profesionally strengthened with Japanese paper (hardly visible), uncut and entirely unopned.         Gawriliada von Puschkin) [The Gabrieliad. (A dream) by A. S. Pushkin].

Simonides i Ko Tsargrad E. L. Kasprovich E.L. Kaprovich between and 1904 printed by G. Uschmann in Weimar 1889 - Sixteenmo (12 x 8 cm). 23, [1] pp., printed on pink paper; two small closed tears to title. Modern black morocco backed marbled paper-covered boards, spine with six gilt rules, the title in Russian in one panel, original printed green wrappers with grey printed label on the front cover bound in. Very rare edition of the Pushkin's erotic poem published in Germany with a fake imprint for clandestine circulation in Russia. Bored with church observances and revolted by the pious hypocrisy, Pushkin wrote this satirical amalgam of several of the Church's most revered dogmas in April 1821. The poem is both blasphemous and erotic, satirising the Annunciation, the Virgin Birth and the Fall of Adam and Eve. Being too scandalous to be published, the text circulated anonymously in manuscript. It came to the attention of authorities only in 1828, when a retired staff-captain V. F. Mitkov was arrested for reading the blasphemous text to his servants. An inquiry was opened and Pushkin was soon brought to questioning before the military governor general of St Petersburg. He initially denied his authorship, but as the work was known to be his, the poet was obliged to write a letter to the Tsar Nicholas I confessing and expressing contrition in order to avoid a second period in exile. The poem tells a story of Mary, a beautiful young Jewess neglected by her old husband but soon destined to lose her virginal innocence. After the Lord sees Mary and falls in love, he sends the archangel Gabriel down to announce this to her. But before either of them can take matters further the Devil presents himself to Mary and, turning into a handsome man, seduces her. Gabriel drives him off and repeats the debauchery. After his departure, as Mary is lying contemplatively on the bed, God in disguise of a white dove descends upon her, and, despite her resistance, has its way with her as well. Having been finally left alone Mary considers her position: "Ah, what fun and games I've had today! That's one, two, three. They're really not too bad! I've weather it, I think I can record. Together in a single day I've had The devil, one archangel and the Lord!" (Translation by A.D.P. Biggs, "The Goddysseyy: or The Deviliad". Russian Literature Triquarterly, No3, spring 1972). The text was published by Erazm Lukasz Kasprowicz (1835-1922), who apparently based it on the earlier Geneva edition issued in 1889. Kasprowicz worked for the well-known publisher F.A. Brockhaus in Leipzig in 1859, where he created the Bibliothek Russischer Autoren in 1861. He founded his own publishing house 'Slavische Buchhandlung' in 1864, opening a bookshop a year later. Taking advantage of the liberal censorship in Germany at that time, Kasprowicz focused on publishing texts that were banned in Russia and his native Poland, making his production highly popular with immigrants. Many of such editions were subsequently smuggled back into the Eastern European countries where they circulated illegally. The erotic poem was first published in a collection of Russian poetry in London in 1861. In Russia a censored version was published in 1907, followed by the complete text in 1917. Outside Russia we could find copies of this edition only at the New York Public Library, Temple University Philadelphia, Harvard University Library and BULAC Paris. The other clipping defends the honour of the Sandford Lasher at Sandford-on-Thames, which Jerome had warned his readers against, the newspaper claiming "On any fine afternoon relief buses take bathers to and from this lovely backwater".         Drottning Louise.

Berlin: R. L. Prager, 1889 - Octavo (213 x 133 mm). Contemporary half pebble grain calf and marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt, sprinkled edges. Joints lightly rubbed, preliminary leaves slightly toned, very occasional pale spotting; an excellent copy. Numerous figures and tables in the text. Zürich bookbinder's ticket to front pastedown. Re-issue of the first edition sheets, originally published in Brunswick in 1854 at the author's own expense, here with new half title and title page and a leaf of prefatory text by the publisher. "Gossen, though perhaps not quite a genius, had a brilliant, original, and precise mind. With his one book, he moved constrained optimization into the centre of the theory of value and allocation, where it has since remained. With respect to economic content, his was probably the greatest single contribution to this theory in the 19th century. He failed, however, to develop the basic principle into a usable analytical engine. As a consequence, the so-called 'founders' of the modern theory of value had to rediscover those principles before they could proceed with their engineering work" (Jürg Niehans in The New Palgrave 2). The work is an attempt to found economics on a mathematical basis, and the author regarded his services in the reform of the method of the science as similar to those of Copernicus in astronomy. The work, which had generally been overlooked even in Germany (it is not mentioned in Roscher's History), was only brought to public attention when Jevons gave an account of it in the preface to the second edition of his Theory of political economy (1872). Cossa 213 (25); Einaudi 2657. Fewer than 20 copies of the 1854 edition are located.

Ups and Downs of a "Crook's" Life. By an Ex-Convict

[New York]: Published by the Author, 1889. Written during the author's 5-year sentence in Clinton Prison, New York, and self-published in the hopes that "If I can sell enough of my books to earn a living, the temptation that sometimes drives ex-convicts back to crime will, in my case at least, be removed, and I will again have a new start in life" (from the Introduction, p. 8). Describes Bailey's experiences in a gang of forgers and his multiple stays in prison. Also valuable for the writing's generous use of underworld and criminal slang: "I told him I had the boodle in my pocket, and I turned it over to him...I was very much afraid that Billy was going to 'do me dirt' by giving me the slip after I had got the boodle; and I was also afraid that 'Yaller' would punch me for not turning the dust over to him...However, I kept my 'lamps' pretty well peeled on both of them..." (p. 18). First edition, small octavo (19cm.); original brown decorative cloth stamped in gilt and black; 150pp.; engraved author portrait frontispiece; small losses to spine ends, textblock edges dampstained; still, Very Good and sound.

Herbarium Collection, with Original Pen-and-Ink Illustrations Enlivening the MountedSpecimens

Claremont 1889 - N.d., circa late 19th century. 52 separate sheets housed within a handsome wooden carrying case or box. Fifty of these sheets contains a dried and flattened plant sample -- flowers, leaves and stems -- with the plant or flower identified in a neat handwriting, and most unusual, accompanied by a pen and ink vignette. The vignettes are a mix -- some replicate the plant or leaf, and thus might be regarded as modestly scientific in purpose; others are of objects or animals which a pleasant to look at or have an appealing association to the artist -- tennis racquets, a sailing boat, an owl, and the like; yet a third group, and these are to us the most special, are pure whimsy, with a touch of humor. This third category also doesn't relate to the plants or flowers. Perhaps one thing that ties all the extra artistic fillips together is that they have an outdoorsy, sporty or summer day quality about them. It goes without saying that the plant samples are arranged neatly and even artistically. We know who the collector and artist was because his name is on both a title page and a brass label attached to the carrying case. The title page also informs us that this collection was created during the Summer of 1889 and for Claremont High School. We would guess that the Claremont in question is one in New Hampshire, based on where this collection was found, but we can not state that definitively. At the time Claremont was a prosperous mill town and presumably this young Willey would have been from an affluent family who afforded him the leisure to create such a collection. including a title page, a second prelim with a pencil illustration of a rose and "Handle with Care" exhortation, and 50 leaves with leaf and flower samples, every one of which also has an original sketch of some kind. The box, really an artist's carrying case with wooden handles attached with thin braided rope to the wood an brass clasps and studs, measures 35 by 27.5 cm, and is 4.5 cm deep. Each of the leaves (the sheets) is 32.5 by 25 cm. Loss of some leaves and some chipped leaves, as to be expected given the dryness of the organic material. Chips on the side of the title. The title and other prelim are discolored by the metal bar which has held them down in the box.
