Lectures Before the Thompson Street Poker Club

New York: White and Allen. (1889). First. Third edition(?). Pictorial reddish brown cloth boards stamped in black and gold. All edges gilt. Illustrated. Edition is unclear but the ads in the back indicate a fourth edition is in preparation, the logical conclusion being that this is at earliest a third edition. Spine edges a bit frayed but otherwise a sound, near fine copy. Anonymously written by Henry Guy Carleton, this copy Inscribed by the author: "To my well beloved friend and austere manager, I inscribe my little work. Henry Guy Carleton. Boston Sept 5th 91." A farce about a lecture series on poker instituted by a predictably comic group of black gamblers, the somber demeanor of the participants belied by their ludicrous speech and activities. Carleton performed the same tender mercies for New York City's Chinese immigrant population with a similar book: Lectures Before the Mott Street Poker Club. This is one of the most famous books of racist humor, uncommon in any edition, and especially so signed by its anonymous author. .

Blick auf Zürich (vom See her).

XX. Jahrhundert. (SIK, Zürich)

The olive green has uniformly and attractively faded to a wonderful autumnal shade. A fine and very appealing set.Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was one of the most prominent English poets of the Victorian era, popular in Britain and the United States during her lifetime. In the 1830s Elizabeth was introduced to literary society through her cousin, John Kenyon. Her first adult collection of poems was published in 1838 and she wrote prolifically between 1841 and 1844, producing poetry, translation and prose. She campaigned for the abolition of slavery and her work helped influence reform in the child labor legislation. Her prolific output made her a rival to Tennyson as a candidate for poet laureate on the death of Wordsworth. Elizabeth's volume Poems (1844) brought her great success, attracting the admiration of the writer Robert Browning. Their correspondence, courtship and marriage were carried out in secret, for fear of her father's disapproval. Following the wedding she was indeed disinherited by her father. The couple moved to Italy in 1846, where she would live for the rest of her life. They had one son, Robert Barrett Browning, whom they called Pen. She died in Florence in 1861. A collection of her last poems was published by her husband shortly after her death. Elizabeth's work had a major influence on prominent writers of the day, including the American poets Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson. She is remembered for such poems as "How Do I Love Thee?" (Sonnet 43, 1845) and Aurora Leigh (1856).The London bindery of W. Root & Son consistently turned-out excellent work, both on fine bindings as here, and on trade bindings and sets. Packer lists the firm in business in Red Lion Square in 1899-1901, and the December 1942 issue of The Rotarian notes with regret that W. Root had been bombed out (uprooted?) of their premises on Paternaster Row during the 1941 Blitz.

        The Johnstown Flood Photograph Album

Photo album containing original photographs of the aftermath of the Johnstown flood. Limp morocco covers, stitched linen leaves with photos laid on. The album contains 49 photos. In very good condition with some wear to the covers. The Johnstown Flood occurred on May 31, 1889, after the catastrophic failure of the South Fork Dam on the Little Conemaugh River 14 miles upstream of the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The dam broke after several days of extremely heavy rainfall, releasing 16 million tons from the reservoir. With a volumetric flow rate that temporarily equaled that of the Mississippi River, the flood killed 2,209 people and caused US$17 million of damage. The American Red Cross, led by Clara Barton and with 50 volunteers, undertook a major disaster relief effort. Support for victims came from all over the United States and 18 foreign countries. After the flood, survivors suffered a series of legal defeats in their attempts to recover damages from the dam's owners. Public indignation at that failure prompted the development in American law changing a fault-based regime to strict liability.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Western Europe, the construction of gables in staircases became common in order to allow easy access to the chimney. With the increase of the urban population, the number of chimney houses increased and the chimney sweep became more respected and sought after, although he is sometimes ridiculed by worms, ballads and pantomimes . In the Victorian era in the United Kingdom, the profession was known for the use of young boys thin enough to sneak inside the chimneys to clean them from the inside. They were nicknamed the climbing boys . The work was dirty and risky, and their employers had a reputation as exploiters. The same was true in France, where, traditionally, chimney sweepers were mostly young Savoyards who had gone from their country under the guidance of an elder to work in the big cities.

This title is Twain’s first collaboration with illustrator Dan Beard. “Since Twain enthusiastically approved every drawing in the novel, it should be read as a full collaboration between the author and artist” (LeMaster & Wilson, 64).         The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems.

London: Kegan Paul. 1889 - First edition. pp. vi, 156. Dark blue cloth, title on gilt on upper cover and spine, with publishers monogram stamped in blind on lower cover. Owner’s signature on front fly leaf. A near fine copy. Wade 2. The title of the poem is taken from a verse dialogue between the seasoned warrior Oisin and Saint Patrick. It recounts Oisin’s adventures in Tir-nan-Oge (the land of youth) with the immortal Niamh and the poem ends with the hero returning to the mortal world. Yeats probably based his narrative on Brian O’Looney’s translation although it was also suggested he worked from the Gaelic Union school edition of the poem. In 1938 Yeats wrote that ‘The Wanderings of Oisin’ “was published by subscription, John O’Leary finding almost all the subscribers”. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
