A very large albumen paper photograph, reproducing an illuminated address presented to John Dunn Esq. J.P. of Mount Barker (1802-1904), member of Parliament and prominent wheat merchant and miller in early colonial South Australia), by the workers of J. Dunn & Co. on the occasion of his retirement in May 1889. The address, the original of which was illustrated and illuminated by W.G.P. Joyner, gives an indication of the scale and importance of Dunn's enterprises: '. . . by your persev[er]ance, energy and strict integrity you have overcome all obstacles, and today you have the satisfaction of leaving to your successors the largest milling and wheat business in the Southern Hemisphere'

      - Image size approximately 325 x 263 mm, on the original ruled mount (visible surface 430 x 365 mm), framed and glazed. The photograph is beginning to lift slightly at two corners; mount slightly soiled at one corner; frame a little scuffed and marked; overall in excellent condition. On the reverse is the paper label of 'S. Solomon, Photographer, 51 Rundle Street, Adelaide'. An article in the 'South Australian Chronicle' for 8 June 1889 describes the circumstances of the presentation of the address, and describe the original in detail. 'The address is the work of Mr. Joyner, and is one of his most artistic productions . . . The words and the signatures, which number 105, being those of most of the leading employés, are situated in the centre, while all around are well executed paintings of a number of the mills belonging to the firm, taken from photographs. In the left-hand corner there is a painting of the site of the original mill at Hay Valley . . . On the top are Mr. Dunn's residence at Mount Barker ['The Laurels'] and the Dunn Memorial Church, which that gentleman presented to the residents of Mount Barker, while the right hand corner is occupied by a view of the firm's stores and offices in Freeman-street [Adelaide, now Gawler Place]. On the left side of the address there are views of the mills at Wilmington, the old mill at Port Adelaide, and at Mount Barker, and two representations of the new Roller Eclipse mill at Port Adelaide. On the other side the Nairne mill takes precedence, while underneath it is the gem of the collection the works at Port Pirie, including some of the shipping of the port with the railway in front. The Port Augusta and Bridgewater mills are represented, and an excellent portrait of Mr. Dunn is also included in the set.' A number of the source photographs are to be found in a Dunn family photograph album, now held by the State Library of South Australia [PRG 1485/3]. Dunn's entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' records that '[he] retired in 1889 and died at Mount Barker on 13 October 1894. The firm's eleven mills, five with the most modern machinery, then represented an investment of £150,000. They annually had an export trade of some 20,000 tons of flour to Britain, Western Australia, New South Wales and South Africa, some 400 employees, and a payment to farmers of £500,000'. The Blue Fairy Book

The First Andrew Lang Fairy Book in Fine condition complete with signed & inscribed letter from Andrew Lang dated 1889. First edition. 8vo. 390pp + 16pp ads. Publisher's blue boards with gilt decoration to front board & spine. All edges gilt. A fine copy with clean & fresh boards with a coupleof the tiniest marks only. From the Thomas Hutchinson collection with bookplate & shelf number. A superb copy. Thomas Hutchinson 1856-1938 lived in Northumberland & was a published poet & a childrens book collector on an heroic scale; he had two library sales, one in Sothebys, 1905 & a three day sale held by Anderson & Garland of Newcastle in 1921. Hutchinson had constant correspondence with authors of the time and often tipped this into his books with associated contemporary author ephemera. This copy has such ephemera tipped in onto the endpapers (the collection hallmark) along with an important Andrew Lang letter most probably to Hutchinson dated 1889 stating "The book is only meant for children, and a preface would only annoy them and so it is confined to the full grown editions....."; also a manuscript hand written envelope has been tipped in from G. P. Jacomb-Hood dated '92 - one of the original illustrators. The Lang letter is of importance as it is contemporary with the Blue Fairy book & reveals Lang's wishes & intentions - interestingly written before any of the other Fairy Books had been published.

Narrative and Critical History of America

1889. WINSOR, Justin, editor. The Narrative and Critical History of America. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, (1889). Eight volumes bound in 16. Royal octavo, contemporary three-quarter black pebbled morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges, top edges gilt. $3800.Early edition of this monumental illustrated historical survey of the American continents, 16 large volumes in handsome publisher's morocco. This copiously illustrated work is composed of numerous in-depth essays by leading historians of the day, including Winsor himself. It is particularly valuable for its inclusion of the text of early documents and other primary sources, a number of which are illustrated in facsimile. Winsor's contributions are notable for his close attention to the evolving cartography of North America; “[Winsor] rapidly became the leading cartographer in the United States, and through his study of maps solved a number of historical problems which had previously been insoluble” (DAB). “If competently revised and brought more nearly to date, would be the most useful single work on the Western hemisphere, its history, cartography, and bibliography” (Howes W578). First issued in smaller octavo format from 1884 to 1889. Slight rubbing to extremities. A near-fine, handsome set.

        BALESTRERI, Umberto.

60 lastre stereoscopiche in vetro, conservate in tre caricatori originali. Il supporto in vetro conferisce maggiore profondità e luminosità all'immagine tridimensionale. The Nursery "Alice"

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1889 [1891]. Tall octavo. Original cream cloth-backed cream glazed pictorial boards, title to front cover red and black. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, 19 colour illustrations after John Tenniel. A little wear to extremities, light foxing to endpapers, boards toned and slightly soiled, a minor loss to lower fore corner; a very good copy. First edition, second issue ("The People's edition"), priced at two shillings on the title page. The original printing of this condensed version of Alice for younger readers was discarded by Dodgson in much the same way as its 1865 predecessor. Dodgson rejected the entire first edition of 10,000 copies in 1889, which was printed on toned paper, on the grounds that the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy". The first 4,000 rejected sheets were sent to America for publication under the imprint of Macmillan & Co. of New York, and a second edition of 10,000 copies was prepared for the UK in 1890. The most notable alteration in the second editions was the printing of the sheets on white rather than toned paper and the altered illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on p. 34, removing Alice's profile. After the publication of the second edition, the remainder of the first printing sheets, retaining the original illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on p. 34, were bound up to form the "People's Edition" of 1891, priced at two shillings, as in this copy. In 1896 copies of this issue were withdrawn from sale and offered to hospitals. Uncommon thus, with only five copies traced at auction: copies are overwhelmingly met in the second edition.

Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production Translated from the third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, and edited by Frederick Engels.

New York Appleton & Co. 1889 - The First American Edition MARX, Karl. Capital. A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, and edited by Frederick Engels. New York: Appleton & Co., 1889. First American edition. Octavo (8 7/16 x 5 1/2 inches; 214 x 140 mm). xxxi, [1, blank], [1]-816 pp. Original full yellow cloth with spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Boards triple ruled in blind. Yellow coated endpapers. Previous owner's small name stamp on page ix. Some moderate shelfwear, spine a bit chipped at extremities. Back outer hinge and board edges and corners with some rubbing. Spine lightly sunned. Inner hinges with some repairs. Overall a very good copy. In 1867 appeared the first volume of Marx’s treatise Das Kapital, in which he propounded his theory of political economy. After the death of Marx this was completed from his papers by Engels. It is a criticism of the capitalistic system under which, according to Marx, a diminishing number of capitalists appropriate the benefits of improved industrial methods, while the labouring class are left in increasing dependency and misery. Marx holds the view that the price of a commodity should be the remuneration of the labour required to produce it, and that it fails to be this because capital exacts a share of the price, while competition among the workers obliges them to accept less than their proper due. The remedy for this state of things Marx finds in the total abolition of private property, to be effected by the class war. When the community has acquired possession of all property and the means of production, it will distribute work to each individual and provide him with the means of sustenance: From everyone according to his faculties, to everyone according to his needs. Karl Marx’s Capital can be read as a work of economics, sociology and history. He addresses a myriad of topics, but is most generally trying to present a systematic account of the nature, development, and future of the capitalist system. There is a strong economic focus to this work, and Marx addresses the nature of commodities, wages and the worker-capitalist relationship, among other things. Much of this work tries to show the ways in which workers are exploited by the capitalist mode of production. He also provides a history of past exploitations. Marx argues that the capitalist system is ultimately unstable, because it cannot endlessly sustain profits. Thus, it provides a more technical background to some of his more generally accessible works, like The Communist Manifesto. Einaudi. Goldsmiths'. Kress. Histoire de Khanat de Khokand. Traduit de Russe par Auguste Dozon.

Paris, Ernest Leroux, éditeur, 1889 - Quarto (273 × 172 mm). Contemporary dark blue half morocco, marbled boards, by Joseph Bretault, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, tricolour silk page-marker. Original wrappers bound in front and back. A very lightly rubbed at the extremities, pale toning, a very good copy in an attractive contemporary binding by Bretault, a pupil of Victor Champs, recognised as one of the foremost binders practising in Paris at the turn of the 19th century (Devauchelle, La Reliure en France, III, p. 127). Double-page engraved map. First edition in French, originally published in Russian in 1886 at Kazan, this edition issued for l'École des langues orientales vivantes. Institutionally well-represented, but uncommon in commerce with just two copies at auction in the last 50 years. This is an important account of the Khanate of Kokand, a city now in the Ferganah region of Uzbekistan. Nalivkine (1852–1918) began his career as an artillery officer and saw service in the conquest of Khiva in 1875, the following year becoming commander of Namengan in Ferghana. He then left the service to become a "rural proprietor" (translator's preface) and embarked on ethnographical and linguistic studies of the region, producing in time both the first Russo–Sart and Russo–Uzbek dictionaries. In 1884 he was recalled to the service at the specific instructions of General Cherniaev, the governor-general of Russian Turkestan, in order to establish a school at Tashkent for the teaching of Russian and mathematics, while himself occupying the chair in Sart and Persian at the lycée there. Nalivkine was the author of the first course-book for the elementary schools that the Russians were establishing throughout the region. He was a member of the Tashkent State Duma, and subsequently head of the Turkestan Committee of the Provisional Government, and commander of the Turkestan Military District. In November 1917, power in Tashkent was seized by the Bolsheviks and their Left Social Revolutionary allies, and with the transfer of power to the soviets, Nalivkine went into hiding. He committed suicide in January 1918.
