Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production Translated from the third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, and edited by Frederick Engels.

New York Appleton & Co. 1889 - The First American Edition MARX, Karl. Capital. A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, and edited by Frederick Engels. New York: Appleton & Co., 1889. First American edition. Octavo (8 7/16 x 5 1/2 inches; 214 x 140 mm). xxxi, [1, blank], [1]-816 pp. Original full yellow cloth with spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Boards triple ruled in blind. Yellow coated endpapers. Previous owner's small name stamp on page ix. Some moderate shelfwear, spine a bit chipped at extremities. Back outer hinge and board edges and corners with some rubbing. Spine lightly sunned. Inner hinges with some repairs. Overall a very good copy. In 1867 appeared the first volume of Marx’s treatise Das Kapital, in which he propounded his theory of political economy. After the death of Marx this was completed from his papers by Engels. It is a criticism of the capitalistic system under which, according to Marx, a diminishing number of capitalists appropriate the benefits of improved industrial methods, while the labouring class are left in increasing dependency and misery. Marx holds the view that the price of a commodity should be the remuneration of the labour required to produce it, and that it fails to be this because capital exacts a share of the price, while competition among the workers obliges them to accept less than their proper due. The remedy for this state of things Marx finds in the total abolition of private property, to be effected by the class war. When the community has acquired possession of all property and the means of production, it will distribute work to each individual and provide him with the means of sustenance: From everyone according to his faculties, to everyone according to his needs. Karl Marx’s Capital can be read as a work of economics, sociology and history. He addresses a myriad of topics, but is most generally trying to present a systematic account of the nature, development, and future of the capitalist system. There is a strong economic focus to this work, and Marx addresses the nature of commodities, wages and the worker-capitalist relationship, among other things. Much of this work tries to show the ways in which workers are exploited by the capitalist mode of production. He also provides a history of past exploitations. Marx argues that the capitalist system is ultimately unstable, because it cannot endlessly sustain profits. Thus, it provides a more technical background to some of his more generally accessible works, like The Communist Manifesto. Einaudi. Goldsmiths'. Kress.         Histoire de Khanat de Khokand. Traduit de Russe par Auguste Dozon.

Paris, Ernest Leroux, éditeur, 1889 - Quarto (273 × 172 mm). Contemporary dark blue half morocco, marbled boards, by Joseph Bretault, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, tricolour silk page-marker. Original wrappers bound in front and back. A very lightly rubbed at the extremities, pale toning, a very good copy in an attractive contemporary binding by Bretault, a pupil of Victor Champs, recognised as one of the foremost binders practising in Paris at the turn of the 19th century (Devauchelle, La Reliure en France, III, p. 127). Double-page engraved map. First edition in French, originally published in Russian in 1886 at Kazan, this edition issued for l'École des langues orientales vivantes. Institutionally well-represented, but uncommon in commerce with just two copies at auction in the last 50 years. This is an important account of the Khanate of Kokand, a city now in the Ferganah region of Uzbekistan. Nalivkine (1852–1918) began his career as an artillery officer and saw service in the conquest of Khiva in 1875, the following year becoming commander of Namengan in Ferghana. He then left the service to become a "rural proprietor" (translator's preface) and embarked on ethnographical and linguistic studies of the region, producing in time both the first Russo–Sart and Russo–Uzbek dictionaries. In 1884 he was recalled to the service at the specific instructions of General Cherniaev, the governor-general of Russian Turkestan, in order to establish a school at Tashkent for the teaching of Russian and mathematics, while himself occupying the chair in Sart and Persian at the lycée there. Nalivkine was the author of the first course-book for the elementary schools that the Russians were establishing throughout the region. He was a member of the Tashkent State Duma, and subsequently head of the Turkestan Committee of the Provisional Government, and commander of the Turkestan Military District. In November 1917, power in Tashkent was seized by the Bolsheviks and their Left Social Revolutionary allies, and with the transfer of power to the soviets, Nalivkine went into hiding. He committed suicide in January 1918.

Canal de Nicaragua: a Letter Opener for the Exposition Universelle in Paris.

1889 - Letter opener with lithograph map on recto, 1889 calendar printed on handle; map edges chipped. Dimensions: 35 by 340mm (1.25 by 13.25 inches). Produced by the Nicaraguan republic, on a "échantillon de bois" (wood sample). The recto with a printed map showing a proposed route for an Inter-Oceanic Nicaragua Canal. The proposed waterway would connect the Caribbean Sea, and therefore the Atlantic Ocean, with the Pacific Ocean through Nicaragua. Such a canal would follow rivers up to Lake Nicaragua and then cut across the isthmus of Rivas to reach the Pacific. Construction of a canal along the route using the San Juan River was proposed in the early colonial era, and Louis Napoleon wrote an article about its feasibility in the early nineteenth century. Plans by the United States to build such a canal were abandoned in the early twentieth century, after the purchase of the French interests in the Panama Canal at a reasonable cost. The canal idea was discussed seriously by businessmen and governments throughout the nineteenth century. The verso of the opener shows a pasted vignette with the Pavillon du Nicaragua at the Exposition, as well a stamp of the Republica.

The Happy Prince And Other Tales

David Nutt, London 1889 - Now completely and beautifully rebound by the Chelsea Bindery in deep blue morocco with the original David Nutt cover design stamped in gilt with the additional flourish of a weeping swallow towards the bottom edge. Lovely flower patterned endpapers and decorative inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Though this copy is the second issue of 1889 it has a unique and very interesting signed inscription on the front free endpaper in Oscar Wilde's hand. The inscription is to Lady Mount Temple or Georgina Cowper-Temple. In an example of mutual need, Lady Mount Temple and Constance Wilde, wife of Oscar, became dear friends, confidants and very diligent letter writers. Lady Mount Temple's husband, William Francis Cowper-Temple died in 1888 and her friendship with Constance helped fill this void in her life and provided her with friendship and a shared mutual interest in religious study, Dante Alighieri, mysticism and philanthropy. Constance Wilde was by 1888-1889 having to deal with a constant and debilitating loneliness from her husband's frequent absences. For some considerable time she wrote letters to Lady Mount Temple nearly every day. They were close neighbors of each other in Chelsea and there is mention of Lady Wilde hand delivering a signed copy of House of Pomegranates to Lady Mount Temple. Possibly that is how this copy of The Happy Prince came to be presented as well. The inscription is dated 1890. Now housed in a lovely 1/2 leather deep blue dropped-back box with lettering to the spine in gilt. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1889. First Edition . Signed. MASSENET, J[ules]. Esclarmonde: Opéra Romanesque en quatre actes et huit tableaux. Paris: G. Hartmann, [1889]. Quarto, contemporary half red straight-grain morocco. $3800.First edition, association copy of the piano-vocal score, inscribed by Massenet to the great French bass Joseph Tagliafico “a lÂ’ami Tagliafico, souvenir de son bien affectionne, J. Massenet,” with a musical quotation from the prologue (“O divine Esclarmonde…”), dated Paris, October 1889. With lovely art nouveau color illustrations, including vignette title page, by E. Grasset.“On 15 May 1889, Esclarmonde opened at the Opéra-Comique in the Place du Chatelet with Sibyl Sanderson in the title role. Billed as opéra romanesque, it did quite well, with ninety-one performances by the end of 1889 and ten more the following year, before it closed its run” (Irvine, 164). In Esclarmonde, Massenet, the predominant French opera composer of his generation, departs from his characteristic elegance in favor of a more Wagnerian intensity. The opera prompted one contemporary critic to write: “never yet, I believe, has anyone produced so accurate and detailed a musical description of la manifestation physique des tendresses humaines” (Irvine, 166). With front wrapper bound in. Front inner paper hinge splitting, contemporary binding sound and attractive. An extremely good association copy.

Weinbau und Kellerwirtshaft [Viticulture and Enology]

[Geisenhiem, Germany], 1889. Octavo, 270, [4] pages. Table of contents. Illustrated. Manuscript of an unpublished work on grape growing and winemaking, by the principal of the School of Fruit and Wine Growing at Slovenia's University of Malibor. The manuscript is a well-organized treatise on the subject, not a collection of notes, and therefore we believe it is a draft work in progress of an unpublished book. Divided neatly into two sections, the first treats viticulture in general, including planting, soil, roots, grafting, structures for terracing, trellissing, pruning, etc. The second part covers the winemaking process and includes storage equipment - barrels, valves, bungs - the chemistry of fermentation, etc. The pages are uniformly creased to provide neat, wide margins, which have been used for additional notes, and for significant and detailed illustration. Zweifler, a German, was the author of a number of important works on the wines of Germany, Austria and Slovenia, including Lehrbuch des Weinbaues und der Weinbehandlung Für praktische Weinbauern und Kellerwirte, sowie Weinbauschulen. His earliest work, Vrste ameriskih in domacih trt, ki so priporocljive za vinograde na Stajerskem, was published in Gradec, Slovenia in 1905. All of the others were published in Germany. Maribor, location of the University's School of Fruit and Wine Growing is the gateway to the Mariborske and Slovenske Gorice winemaking regions, and home to the oldest known grape vine in the world, the Stara Trta, estimated to be 450 years old. Included in the second part are two tipped-in printed booklets on viniculture: Uber Rotweinbereitung [From the grape to the glass], by Zweifler ([1889] 6 pages); and Betrachtungern uber die Reblaus [Reflections on Phylloxera in the present state of Things. (1889. 20 pages)]. The second has a two page, chromolithographed plate of phylloxera. In patterned-cloth over a brown cloth spine; spine gilt-titled. Binding is edgworn and lightly chipped at the head and foot of spine, otherwise very good. [OCLC locates just one copy of Uber Rotweinbereitung, and none of the Betrachtungern].

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
