HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DURING THE FIRST ADMINISTRATION OF THOMAS JEFFERSON. [with:] ...DURING THE SECOND ADMINISTRATION OF THOMAS JEFFERSON. [with:] ...DURING THE FIRST ADMINISTRATION OF JAMES MADISON. [with:] ...DURING THE SECOND ADMINISTRATION OF JAMES MADISON

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1889-1893.. Nine volumes. Half title in each volume. Original green cloth, spines gilt. Cloth shelfworn and lightly rubbed. Hinges of final three volumes mended. Tideline in lower margin of fifth, seventh, and ninth volumes, else quite clean and fresh internally. Very good overall. A mixed set, comprising first and second editions, of a true masterpiece of American historical writing, a work that gave form and shape to an era and whose themes influence the way we understand the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to this day. Adams' overarching theme is the unification - through policy, economy, and war - of a country that in 1800 was disunited. He melds a scientific approach to history involving copious and thorough documentation with a graceful and compelling literary style. Garry Wills, who has devoted a recent book to an examination of Adams' HISTORY..., calls it "the non-fiction prose masterpiece of the nineteenth century in America." Adams worked for ten years on the research and writing of his HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES.... He wrote that with it he hoped "to exhaust all that I have to say in this world...to compress this into three volumes [the original planned length of the work] and to expunge every unnecessary syllable, will be my great labor for several years. To make it readable is the great hope of my life" (quoted in the Library of America edition of the administration of Jefferson, p.1300). Adams worked with Scribner's in all aspects of the book's production and design, including the binding, thickness of paper, page design, typography, reproduction of maps and plans, indexing, chapter titles, and running headlines. The complete set of nine volumes was published in an edition of 1500 copies in 1889 to 1891. A volume of HISTORICAL ESSAYS was also published by Scribner's in 1891, bound uniformly with the HISTORY... and sometimes found with it, but it is not a part of the work proper and is not included here. Significantly, Adams continued to make revisions to his text, which were incorporated into later editions. The present set contains the first edition of the first volume; second edition of the second through sixth volumes; and the first edition of the seventh, eighth, and ninth volumes. "The most skillfully organized and most brilliantly presented interpretation of any period of our history yet attempted" - Howes. "The most valuable history of this important period, remarkable alike for its research, its penetrating analysis of character and political tendencies, and for the flood of light it throws upon every phase of the foreign relations of the country" - Larned. "A work that pioneers the new history coming into existence at the time. It offers archival research on an unprecedented scale in America, and combines it with social and intellectual history, diplomatic and military and economic history. This wealth of material is deployed with wit and a sense of adventure" - Wills. "In the best pages of the HISTORY... there is an almost mathematical sense of precision; an almost mechanistic sense of cause and effect and resultant motion; above all, an evolutionistic sense, not so much of progress (although this element is present) as of progression....No American historian, and few, if any European, has surpassed Adams' portrayal of the labyrinthian unfolding of human thought and the subtle interaction of one mind upon another" - Jordy. "The knowledge and ideas, the skill and imagination which made the historian an artist can best be seen in [this] masterwork" - Levenson. A monumentally important work of American history. HOWES A53, "aa." BAL 19, 20, 21, 22. LARNED 1580. Garry Wills, HENRY ADAMS AND THE MAKING OF AMERICA (Boston & New York, 2005).         Ueber Strahlen electrischer Kraft.

1889 - RARE OFFPRINT IN FIRST EDITION from: Annalen der Physik 36, neue Folge, 1889, pp. 769-783, 1 plate. In original printed wrapper, browned. - The text of a lecture on electric waves delivered 13 December 1888, it relates qualitative experiments undertaken by Hertz, at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic, on the analogy between electric and light waves. Passing electric waves through huge prisms of hard pitch, he showed that they refract exactly as light waves do. He polarized electric waves by directing them through a grating of parallel wires, and he diffracted them by interrupting them with a screen with a hole in it. He reflected them from the walls of the room, obtaining interference between the original and the reflected waves. He focused them with huge concave mirrors, casting electric shadows with conducting obstacles. This is the first print appearance, preceding its appearance in Annalen der Physik (36, p. 769) because, at this point in his career, Hertz was sending his papers to Hermann von Helmholtz to communicate to the Berlin Academy for quick publication before sending them to Annalen der Physik. It was later collected with Hertz's other experimental and theoretical works on electricity in Untersuchungen uber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft (Leipzig, 1892), which expanded and clarified the electromagnetic theory of light that had been put forth by the British Physicist James Maxwell in 1884. Hertz's experiments with electromagnetic waves led to the development of the wireless telegraph and the radio. (D.S.B.) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE

1889. London, Paris, New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company, 1889. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1889. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition (published on the day before the Scribner's one), with the proper July ads. Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this book was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP (1839), which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889.~The verso of this copy's front free endpaper lists twelve titles; some copies have a list of ten or fourteen (priority unknown). This is not a scarce book, but it usually turns up in miserable condition; this is an attractive, near-fine copy -- very faint cover soil, the volume slightly askew. The red cloth has retained its brightness better than most copies we have seen. Beinecke 487 (cites only a copy listing 14 titles); Princeton 41A (mentions copies with all three lists).

Autograph manuscript unsigned Sewall Wright Notes on the work of F.B. Sumner

UNBOUND. 60 pages in pencil from Geneticist, Evolutionary Theorist, Sewall Wright (1889-1988). Few pages little soiled with dampstain, paperclips indents on several pages, still very good. Uncommon. Acquired from Sewall Wright's biographer William B. Provine. * Rare books make Fine Gifts.         The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Sixth Edition, with Additions and Corrections to 1872. (Thirty-Seventh Thousand)

8vo., Sixth Edition, Thirty-Seventh Thousand, with a folding diagram, neat contemporary signatures on front endpapers; original arches-style binding of green cloth, decorative gilt back, green patterned endpapers, uncut, corners lightly bruised, case a little shaken and upper hinge tender (but binding entirely sound), two pinholes in backstrip (not affecting lettering) else a very good, crisp, clean copy. The sixth is generally held to be the last significant edition, containing as it does Darwin's final major corrections and revisions. Published in 1872, it is the first edition with the title The Origin of Species, and includes among many other revisions a new chapter (VII) inserted to confute the views of the Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. There is a glossary, and the word 'evolution' is used in the text for the first time. The thirty-seventh thousand is unusual in that it rarely carries the usual publisher's catalogue bound in at end.A good copy of the 'most important scientific work of the 19th century' (Horblit) and 'the most important biological book ever written' (Freeman).Scarce in anything like this condition.Freeman (Darwin), 131; Freeman (BNHB), 907.

        HISTÓRIA DO CERCO DO PORTO.

      - Por ? Bacharel formado na Faculdade de Medicina. Nova edição ilustrada. Precedida da biographia do auctor. Porto 1889 e 1890. A. Leite Guimarães ? Editor. Location/localizacao: 6-2-A-16
