        Micah Clarke

London - Longmans, Green and Co., 1889. London - Longmans, Green and Co., 1889 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Arthur Conan Doyle's historical adventure novel set during the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. Second Edition. The book follows the exploits of Conan Doyle's fictional character Micah Clarke. It is a bildungsroman whose protagonist begins as a boy seeking adventure in a rather romantic and naive way, falls under the influence of an older and vastly experienced, world-weary soldier of fortune, and becomes a grown up after numerous experiences, some of them very harrowing. In the process the book also records much of the history of the Monmouth Rebellion, but from the point of view of someone living in 17th century England. Much of the focus is upon the religious dimension of the conflict. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally sound, though with some marks and bumping. Spine is cocked. Internally, firmly bound. Bookplate of Grinstead's Circulating Library to front pastedown. Pages are bright, though with some scattered patched of foxing. Overall: GOOD..

The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems

London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1889. London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co.,, 1889. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, black coated endpapers. In a blue quarter morocco slipcase. Short tear to fore edge of the front free endpaper, corners bumped but an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. A major literary association copy with Yeats's contemporary presentation inscription to the first blank leaf, "To the poet of the North Countrie Joseph Skipsey with the author's kind regards". Yeats has made minor corrections to the text on four pages. The recipient was a remarkable figure in the literary world of the late 19th century. The son of a Northumberland miner, Joseph Skipsey resisted following his family down the pits. Instead he studied alone and took to writing. He established himself as the poetical voice his community and gained national recognition as a poet and critic. After holding a number of unrewarding positions of the periphery of educational institutions he moved in 1889 to Stratford-upon-Avon where he and his wife were appointed joint custodians of Shakespeare's Birthplace. However after less than two years he became disenchanted with the job which (he confided in a letter not to be opened until after his death) involved dealing with relics which had "no definite history" and having to "perpetuate error and fraud" on the visitors and general public. Presentation copies of this landmark Yeats title are of the utmost scarcity, the present example being the only one with a literary association to appear on the market in 35 years.

Witchcraft in Kinross-shire, Being Full Details of Criminal Trials for Witchcraft and Sorcery at Crook of Devon in 1662.

George Barnet ND (circa 1889?), Kinross, Scotland - Softcover. Booklet. 66pp. Printed parchment wrappers over limp paper boards. "Printed for private circulation" printed on front wrapper and title-page. Presentation inscription by the author on the blank opposite the title-page reads "To David Young Esq. / with the warm regards of / R. Burns Begg [signature] / The Witch Hole / Kinross 16 April 1889." An extremely scarce booklet by Robert Burns Begg (1833-1900), county clerk of Kinross, antiquarian, author, and Masonic lodge-master. The text comprises a thoughtful 22 page introductory essay by Begg, followed by the first publication of the text of the Minutes of an Assize Court of Justiciary held at Crook of Devon, Kinross-shire, in 1662, recording the proceedings on charges of witchcraft and sorcery that resulted in the deaths of ten women and one man (either died during the trial or executed thereafter), with most of the women strangled and burnt. Begg also published a slightly different verison of the Minutes, with a much shorter introduction by himself, under the title "Notice of Trials for Witchcraft at Crook of Devon, Kinross-shire, in 1662" in the "Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. One Hundred and eighth Session. 1887-88. Vol. x., New Series" pp. 211-241 (1888). It is not known whether Begg first printed the booklet, and then contributed to the "Proceedings" or vice-versa (either would be quite plausible), although it is certain that the booklet is the first separate publication of the work. It is also certain that it is of the utmost rarity, as it was not known to John Ferguson, and is absent from his usually comprehensive "Bibliographical Notes on the Witchcraft Literature of Scotland." Worldcat/OCLC traces only one copy, although we have found record of two others (both somewhat defective) being sold in the last 20 years. Although not marked as such, this is from the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman. Wrappers a little darkened, small brown mark the size of a cigarette end on rear the upper rear wrapper, endpapers slightly discolored, page-edges lightly browned, otherwise a solid VG+ copy.         Minutes of Evidence Given Before THE ROYAL COMMISSION by Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, Ph. D. of Washington D.C. U.S.A. on the 14th, 21st, 22nd, and 26th June 1888

Eyre and Spottiswoode for Her Majesty's Stationery Office, London 1889 - First Separate Edition. [1]-66 pages plus 3 diagrams (1 folding). Original publisher's buff printed wrappers. 8 1/4 inches x 12 inches. Old paper tape spine repair, wrappers laid down on reinforcing paper when reattached. Closely trimmed on the bottom edge, with some minor impact to signature letters (textblock otherwise intact with no loss). Reprinted from the General Minutes of Evidence taken by the Royal Commission [on the Blind, the Deaf and Dumb, &c], and presented to both Houses of Parliment by Command of Her Majesty. Wraps. "In 1880, the Second International Congress on Education of the Deaf met in Milan, Italy, and passed several resolutions. No Deaf people were involved in preparing or approving the resolutions. Two of the declarations are of special note. In English translation they read: (1) given the incontestable superiority of speech over signs in restoring deaf-mutes to society, and in giving them a more perfect knowledge of language that the oral method ought to be preferred to signs; and (2) considering that the simultaneous use of speech and signs has the disadvantage of injuring speech, lipreading, and precision of ideas, that the pure oral method ought to be preferred. The result was the acceleration of a trend to abolish any kind of sign instruction in almost all countries in the world, with at best a significant reduction and at worst a complete elimination of the numbers and roles of Deaf professionals in the field. Not only were thousands of deaf children denied an effective means of communication, but access to a vibrant Deaf community was either delayed or eliminated." (American Annals of the Deaf Volume 155, Number 3, Summer 2010). In reaction to this Congress, in 1888 The Right Honorable Lord Egerton in Britain caused a Royal Commission to be created to investigate the current knowledge of education of the Deaf, and the star witness was Alexander Graham Bell from the United States. Bell was an advocate as well of the oral method over sign language, and although he was recognized as an advocate for the community, his views in this matter were at best tolerated by the Deaf community. The report offered here includes the minutes of his deposition, conducted over 4 days, and includes a very detailed question and answer period (over 650 questions and their answers). The end result was the same as the Milan Conference, ensuring mandatory education for the Deaf but requiring the adoption of a oral only method of teaching. Francis Maginn among others as a result created a new organization to champion the rights and desires of the Deaf community, and the British Deaf And Dumb Association was created in July of the following year. Given the importance of this Commission and it's long standing impact on the Deaf community, it is remarkable to me that only 4 copies appear in OCLC (Rochester Institute of Technology, GALLAUDET UNIV LIBR, and 2 at the University of Wisconsin).
