Singapore contract for Chinese laborers to work in Albany Western Australia 1889: 'General Form of Contract for Chinese Engaging to Labour in this Colony and in the Native States'

Singapore:. 1889.. Very good condition. Signed contract in English and Chinese between two Chinese laborers and agents for Messrs. A & A Hassell, Albany, W.A., from the Office of the Protector of Chinese, in Singapore. By 1888 Singapore had a rapidly expanding Chinese population of over 100,000; the British colonial government appointed William Pickering as the first "Protector of Chinese" in 1877 to handle the serious abuses of Chinese labor. Pickering, who was the first British official to read and speak Chinese, worked diligently to protect the newly arriving immigrants, as well as women immigrants forced into prostitution. Pickering was soon helping the entire Chinese community with labor, financial and domestic disagreements. This assistance undermined the power of the local secret societies, which were practicing extortion, gambling, prostitution and smuggling, and instigating riots. Pickering was seriously injured by a member of one of the societies, and was forced, in spite of several leaves of absence, to retire on May 15, 1889. This contract, dated February of 1889, is one of the last which would have passed through Pickering's office before his retirement. & & The contract stipulates that the two Chinese laborers will be employed as "General Servants" for 3 years, at a monthly wage of $8, with an advance of $32 which would be deducted by the employer at a rate of $2 per month. The other conditions of the contract include traveling expenses, the provision of housing and daily food (although the provision of clothing is struck out); conditions for illness and treatment; inability to work due to venereal disease or laziness; length of work hours; and celebration of Chinese festivals. With the register completed showing the two names of employees in English and Chinese, their ages and countries of origin. Office of Protector of Chinese, and the date Singapore 13th February, 1889 at lower left; signatures of agents for employer at lower right. Two red stamps of the Office of Protector, with the one at the right signed. Text in Chinese at last page. A note written at ninety degrees on the first page of the contract indicating that the two laborers had arrived in Australia, dated 25/3/89, and with the signature Rowe J. Loften, JP. Printed on blue paper, folded. With area of loss at lower right corner of signature page, affecting the signature of the witness, which is perhaps R. G. Watson and 8 1/2 x 13 3/4".

Lays of Ancient Rome with Ivry and the Armada [Rose Trollope's Copy Signed and Dated by Her]

London: William W. Gibbings, 1889. The Museum Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the "Museum" edition of these notable works in the Publisher's original brown cloth with the spine lettered in gilt and the front board decorated in black, BEING ROSE HESELTINE TROLLOPE'S COPY SIGNED BY HER ON THE HALF-TITLE AND THERE DATED BY HER "1892". While this "Museum" edition provides a later printing of the two notable Lord Macauley works therein contained, the book is distinguished by having been Rose Trollope's copy, signed and dated by her as noted above. Born Rose Heseltine in 1821, she married the great Victorian Era author Anthony Trollope in June of 1844 while Anthony Trollope, employed by the Post Office and working in Ireland, had barely commenced his writing career and had not yet completed his first novel, "The Macdermots of Ballycloran". An important aid in Anthony Trollope's writing career, Rose Trollope advised him on his female characters, checked his manuscripts before they were sent off to publishers, and kept his financial records for him. Items signed by Rose Trollope are Rare to the market and this book is the only item signed by her that we ever have seen in over 35 years of diligent searching for Trollope scarcities and rarities. A Very Good copy, SIGNED AND DATED BY ROSE TROLLOPE. RARE INDEED.

Picturesque Palestine, in Three Volumes. Volumes I-III [COMPLETE].

London, Virtue, (1889). - Three volume set. Complete. Royal quarto (32 x 27 cm). Pp. x, 240 plus 10 steel-engraved plates; vi, 240 plus 12 steel-engraved plates; vi, 240 plus 11 steel-engraved plates and a double-page engraved map of Palestine, printed in orange and blue, with inset plan of Jerusalem. The total number of 33 plates includes four different steel-engraved frontispieces and four different, large steel-engraved title vignette, all printed on heavy paper bound-in, with tissue-guards. The three volumes are illustrated with a total of 429 wood-engraved illustrations, many of which are full-page, all with explanatory captions. Index to each volume. Titles printed in red and black. Hardcover, uniformly bound in the original publisher's richly decorated green cloth, gilt panelled and lettered, spine gilt, bevelled boards, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. In about fine condition (occasionally some spotting; slight wear to spine ends.) A very handsome set, very well preserved. ~ Second edition, published in three volumes. It does not differ from the first edition, in four volumes, which was published in 1881. The publisher, James Virtue, seeking new marketing opportunities, substitute the line "In Four Volumes" with "In Three Volumes" and did not reissue the fourth volume, devoted to Sinai and Egypt. Other editions followed suit. Appleton of New York has published a two-volume version, rather crowded in comparison with the original, and indeed one that could not match the exceptionally fine, two large folios of the German edition that was published in 1833 under the direction of Georg Ebers and Hermann Guthe. Although it is Wilson who receives all the credit for this monumental work, it is the contribution of the authors whose work he edited that makes this three-volume opus of value. Distinguished Palestine explorers such as Canon Tristram, Charles Warren, M. Rogers, and notably Major Claude Reignier Conder, R.E. (1848-1910), as well as several others created the necessary balance between image and word. The superb steel engraved plates are printed here with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. Noteworthy are the artists who produced them. Most of the original paintings were made by J. D. Woodward and Harry Fenn. Born in England in 1838, Fenn came at the age of 18 to the United States where he has achieved great success as an illustrator of books, was one of the founders of the American Watercolor Society, and has been one of its exhibitors nearly every year since its organization. Some of his best work is contained in "Picturesque America," "Picturesque Europe," and "Picturesque Palestine". A keen traveller, Fenn has travelled extensively through the United States, Canada, Europe, Egypt, Palestine, and the Sinai Peninsula. Other artists include C. Werner and H. A. Harper. The engravings were executed by numerous outstanding craftsmen, noteworthy among them are C. Bertrand and E. Brandard. The numerous lovely and lively wood-engraved illustrations complete this celebration of word and image. A fine set. [Total weight: 10 kg]. [Descriptive text Copyright Librarium, The Hague]

London, Watt (for the Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund), 1889.. Three books in one volume. Crown Octavo. Pp. 51; 78; 207. Plus three folding lithographed maps, one of which is coloured, each as frontispiece to each book; two lithographed plans bound in Book III. With numerous engraved illustrations, some full-page, throughout. Indices of names with transliteration, Arabic script, and translation. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's ochre cloth, lettered in black, illustration stamped in gilt on cover. In a very fine condition. Excellent copy of a lovely book. ~ First edition. Three books in one volume, published 1889, 1895, 1890 respectively. Provenance: Noted classicist Dr. Henriëtte Boas' copy, with her bookplate. Schumacher was the first explorer to survey the regions described here, and his minute and thorough scientific observations, notes, maps, drawings, and sketches were prepared for publication at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund by his friend, the explorer Guy le Strange. They were published here for the first time. Gottlieb Schumacher (1857) settled at a very young age with his family in Haifa, where his father, a member of the "Temple Association" designed most of the buildings of the German Colony. Following the completion of his engineering studies in Stuttgart, he returned to Haifa and was appointed Chief Engineer for the Province of Akko. He designed many buildings and was a leading figure in civil engineering. One of his most important projects was the survey of the Golan, Hauran, and the Ajlun districts in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway. In the course of this survey he produced the first accurate maps of these regions, along with detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the present villages. He published many other reports and books on his discoveries, supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund. With the outbreak of World War I the Templar community left for Germany. Schumacher returned in 1924 to his home on the Carmel, where he died a year later. Although he was born in Ohio, U.S.A., Gottlieb was brought-up and educated as a German. ?I beg to through myself on the indulgence of my readers for the defects of style,? he once wrote, ?for my work has been perforce written in a language which, though familiar to me, is not my own.? Scarce.

Poet Lore: 52 Bound Volumes and 16 Single Issues in Wraps (1889-1951)

(Philadelphia / Boston): (The Poet-lore Co. / Richard G. Badger / Bruce Humphries). (1889-1951). First. Magazine. 52 bound volumes (most with the original wrappers bound in) and 16 individual issues in wrappers. Octavos. A near-complete run from 1889-1951 of Poet Lore, an influential American literary magazine that first introduced to the English speaking world many important European dramatists and writers. Founded in 1889 as a magazine devoted to Shakespeare and Browning, it soon became indispensable to readers on the lookout for new writers from Europe, Russia, and Asia by publishing their works in (often the first) English translations. These include Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, and the lyric poet Frederic Mistral. Also included in this run are the first English translations of dramatic works by Maurice Maeterlinck, Gerhart Hauptmann, and Arthur Schnitzler; and the first authorized English translations of works by Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Georges Duhamel. Even the American science fiction writer Frederick J. Pohl made a first appearance in 1927 with Varnishing Day. The set consists of a consecutive run of the first twelve monthly issues from 1889, fifteen loose issues in wraps from 1890-1893, and a complete run of monthly and quarterly issues from 1894-1951 bound in half linen and full cloth boards (with one unbound single issue in wraps from 1918). An ex-library set with bookplates and ink stamps, a few intermittent early volumes also have a small embossed or perforated stamp on the title pages, else overall a good or better set of bound volumes. The single issues in wrappers are unmarked, a few with detached wraps, else very good. A very nice assemblage of notable European dramatic literature, poetry, and literary criticism. Further details are available. .

Babbage's Calculating Engines. Being a Collection of Papers Relating to Them; Their History, and Construction. [Compiled by Henry Prevost Babbage.]

      E. and F.N. Spon, London 1889 - The principal source of information for the technical operation of Babbage's Difference and Analytical engines, and a rare book on the market. "Toward the end of his life, Babbage began assembling his own and other's previously published writings on the Difference and Analytical Engines with the intent of publishing a history of the machines, but died before he could accomplish this task. He had the first 294 pages of this work typeset and printed on slightly varying types of paper during his lifetime. It would appear that its purpose was to collect the most significant published writings, many of which had appeared as obscure pamphlets or in little-read journals, together with a listing of what remained unpublished, including all of Babbage's notebooks and engineering drawings [listed on pp. 271-294], in the hope that his unfinished projects might be completed at some future date. The book was completed by Babbage's youngest son, Major-General Henry Prevost Babbage, to whom Babbage had bequeathed his calculating engines and everything pertaining to them. "Were it not for this volume and the bibliography of Babbage's works published both here (on the last three printed pages of the book) and in Babbage's autobiography, Babbage's achievements might have been forgotten. As it turned out the information was never implemented literally, probably because construction of the mechanical Analytical Engine was just too complex a project for any organization except a government to undertake. Yet Babbage's ambitions and his ideas remained alive in the minds of people working in mechanical computation long after his technology had fallen into obsolescence. When Vannevar Bush suggested in 1936 that electromechanical technology might be the way to realize ‘Babbage's large conception’ of the Analytical Engine, he cited this volume among his references; and in building the electromechanical Harvard Mark I, Howard Aiken saw himself as fulfilling Babbage's ambition" (OOC). Hyman 254; OOC 94 (modern reprint only); Van Sinderen CB80, showing that Babbage listed a History of the Analytical Engine as being "in the press" in 1864. 4to: 287 x 225 mm. Pp. [8], 342, [4]. Portrait, folding table, 15 plates (several folding, including 1 large-folding, with some repairs to the margin). Modern dark green cloth in imitation of the original binding, "Babbage’s Calculating Engines" lettered in gilt on upper board and on spine, some leaves browned due to acidic paper, old repairs to folds of some plates, armorial bookplate on title verso. Also Including the Famous "Around the World" Tour of American Baseball Teams, Their Enthusiastic Welcomes, Royal Receptions, Banquets, Great Games Played before Notables of Foreign Nations, Humorous Incidents, Interesting Adventures, etc., etc

Philadelphia: Hubbard Brothers, Publishers. (1889). First. First edition. Thick small quarto. Decorated brown cloth lettered and illustrated in gilt and black. 711pp., illustrated, four color chromolithograph plates. Corners a little bumped, else a fine copy, and as nice as we've seen. Although the book covers most popular field sports of the era, it is overwhelmingly devoted to baseball, and includes profiles of all the current professional teams, college baseball, and with what would in another context be a book-long account of the 1888-9 world barnstorming tour between the Chicago Baseball Club and an opposing all-star squad. Three of the four color illustrations are of baseball, including the wonderful frontispiece view of a baseball game outside London's Crystal Palace, the fourth is of a cricket match. Many black and white illustrations of individual baseball players, as well as of teams and important games. A beautiful copy of a keystone title for any serious baseball collection. .

Descriptive Catalogue of the Nests & Eggs of Birds found breeding in Australia and Tasmania

Sydney: Australian Museum, 1889. Octavo, 21 plates of eggs, the great majority handcoloured; preliminaries browned, but an excellent copy in a contemporary, slightly shaken, craft relief, calf binding. The rare coloured issue of this important Australian natural history work, which was an important adjunct to North's great four-volume work {i Nests and Eggs}. North's contribution to Australian ornithology was immense, and while he often found himself in conflict with his fellow ornithologists his work has always been respected. Very few coloured copies of the {i Descriptive Catalogue of the} {i Nests and Eggs }were produced. The plates were prepared and coloured by Neville Cayley senior. This is an interesting presentation copy, with a slip from E.P. Ramsay, curator of the Australian Museum: North was appointed Ramsay's assistant in 1891. The extraordinary naïve craft binding featuring a hummingbird sipping nectar from a flower with the title spelled out in contrasting red letters is a unique piece of Australiana in its own right. This binding was part of a collection of related works, mainly by Ramsay, which were sold by Alexander Chisholm, the great ornithologist, in the late 1970s. It is possible, therefore, that Chisholm was responsible for the binding.

The Manitoba Gazette / Gazzette De Manitoba January to December 1889

Theophane Bertrand, Queen's Printer, Winnipeg 1889 - RARE MANITOBA GAZETTE WITH THE CONTROVERSIAL ENGLISH ONLY TRANSITION Bound volume containing weekly Gazettes dated from January 5, 1889 to December 21, 1889 inclusive. Dark board cover. Rubbed boards with a small broken edge to top of back cover, worn corners, and slight wear to ends of spine. Speckling to inside front and back, but gazette pages are age toned. Page [299]-300 small section of page in top missing paper affecting some words. Condition is very good otherwise. A rare 1889 Manitoba Gazette publication that includes the controversial publication transition with the bilingual edition ending on August 31, 1889 and the English only Gazette starting on September 7, 1889. Beyond that, there are many laws and weekly news during the year of 1889 in Manitoba. Quite an interesting and historically important set of 1889 Manitoba Gazettes., As French declined in importance, English-speaking Manitobansincreasingly objected to the maintenance of bilingualism in the Legislature and Courts of the province, on the grounds that it was irrelevant, cumbersome and expensive. The Liberal government of Premier Thomas Greenway, which took office after the general election of 1888, responded to this sentiment by sponsoring changes in the province's language laws. By Order in Council in September 1889, the government suspended publication of the French part of the Manitoba Gazette. This action, it might be argued, was not in conflict with section 23 of the Manitoba Act because the Manitoba Gazette was not a record, journal or act of the Legislature. The Gazette had, however, been published in both languages since the province was establishedin 1870 and the change to English only was a first step towards makingthe province officially unilingual.Text in English and French, Mar. 6, 1880-Aug. 31, 1889; includes some text in French, Sept. 7, 1889-, Early Manitoba Government Gazettes are a scarce, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Canada. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of the Province of Manitoba and its people in the past. They contain many thousands of names and places and information from a whole cross section of the community.Issued weekly with occasional special issues, the Manitoba Gazette contains information such as proclamations, land transactions, court notices, notice of acts, public notices, tenders, appointments and resignations, bankrupt and insolvency notices, impoundments, police auctions, unclaimed letters, licenses (publicanís, wine and beer, storekeeperís, occupation, and depasturing), notices of protection, dissolution of partnerships, rewards on offer, and more, in both English and French. Blaeksprutten [The Cuttlefish]: (27 volumes, 1889-1974)

Kjobenhavn [Denmark]: (Ernst Bojesen / Gyldendalske Boghandel). (1889-1974). First. A collection of 27 volumes of this Danish satirical magazine, famous for its color lithographic covers and cartoons. Oblong quartos. Text in Danish. The set includes six scarce early issues in contemporary marbled paper-covered boards with the original wrappers bound in (1889, 1896, 1898, 1902, 1903, and 1912); and 21 loose issues in wrappers (1914-17, 1919-20, 1922-34, 1947 and 1974). Rubbing, scattered nicks and short tears to the edges of the marbled boards and wrap edges, the front wrap of the 1889 issue is detached, the 1915 and 1919 issues lack both wraps, else about very good overall. From the library of Ole Risom, author of I Am a Bunny, and an important publisher of children's books at Golden Books Western Press and Random House. Most issues are inscribed to either Ole or his brother Jens Risom from their grandfather. The set also includes one volume (1896) that belonged to Axel Henriques, one of Blaeksprutten's leading writers, with his name stamped in gilt on the front board. The 25 volumes from 1889 through 1934 feature many classic color covers and cartoons by Axel Thiess, Alfred Schmidt, Hans Bendix, Herluf Jensenius, and Poul Fischer, with most of the text written by Axel Henriques and Anton Melbye. All five artists were renowned for their delightfully fresh and provocative cartoons (showing what life was really like), exhibiting a striking satiric wit and style very much influenced by the great lithographs of Honore Daumier. Among the many highlights are Axel Thiess's signature Cuttlefish cover from 1889 and Dancing Polar Bears cover of 1896, and Hans Bendix's "Hjem fra Skole" [Home from School] from 1928 (showing the corrupting effects of Josephine Baker's immorality on respectable Danish society). Ole Risom was born in Copenhagen and fled Nazi-occupied Denmark for the United States in 1940. After the war he soon became influential in launching the careers of many young artists, and developed a close working relationship with Richard Scarry. Laid-in is a TLS from Risom in Danish (on Random House stationary, dated August 17, 1993). A compelling collection of many early loose issues in unique marbled boards and wrappers, with a nice association. .

        Sylvie and Bruno

London - Macmillan and Co 1889 - A first edition of Lewis Carroll's novel set half in Victorian Britain and half in the fantasy world of Fairyland. This copy was a gift of the illustrator, Harry Furniss, and has this pencil inscription to front free endpaper: 'Given me by the illustrator originally, when I was a small boy in Bournemouth, who used to play with Sylvie and Bruno - Harry Furniss' nicknames for his two children, in 1889. 'Previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper reads H. Sheridan-Bieders. The novel has two main plots; one set in the real world at the time the book was published (the Victorian era), the other in the fantasy world of Fairyland. While the latter plot is a fairy tale with many nonsense elements and poems, similar to Carroll's Alice books, the story set in Victorian Britain is a social novel, with its characters discussing various concepts and aspects of religion, society, philosophy and morality. Condition: In a full morocco binding with gilt textblock edges. Externally, sound with wear to extremities and slight straining to front hinge. Internally, firmly bound. Bright with foxing to the first and last few pages, although text remains generally clean. Overall: VERY GOOD [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Crimean Campaigning and Russian Imprisonment. By One of the "Six Hundred."

Dundee: W. & D. C. Thompson, 1889 - Octavo, original pinkish card-backed linen wraps, title printed to upper panel with image of the Crimean Medal. Slighty rubbed and soiled, neatly rebacked, contents clean and sound, a very good copy. First publication seems to have been Glasgow, 1882 or 3. Farquharson enlisted in the 4th Light Dragoons in 1846 at the age of 14. Just a couple of weeks before the Charge he was court-martialed for insubordination, given 25 lashes and reduced from Trumpeter to Private. In the Charge he was taken prisoner after having three horses shot from under him; "A cannon shot put a sudden stop to my gallop. I saw the horrid thing bounding along the ground, but for the life of me I could not get out of its way, and it flew up and caught my borrowed Cossack steed on the head, killing it, of course, there and then. I fell to the ground, along with it, and in two or three minutes thereafter I was surrounded by Cossacks and taken prisoner." He was repatriated in October 1855, and was discharged by purchase in 1860. Little is known of his life subsequently, he signed the Loyal Address in 1887, and was a pensioner of the Light Brigade Relief Fund in 1891. Uncommon first-hand account of the Charge from the ranks, OCLC recording just 6 copies of the first, and 2 of this second edition.

Exemplaire parfait.
