The Day Will Come: A Novel. In three volumes

London - Simpkin, Marshall and Co. 1889 - A scarce first edition and complete set of Braddon's late nineteenth-century novel. First Edition. Complete in three volumes. Mary Elizabeth Braddon (4 October 1835 4 February 1915) was a British Victorian era popular novelist. Braddon was an extremely prolific writer, producing more than 80 novels with very inventive plots. The most famous one is Lady Audley's Secret (1862), which won her recognition as well as fortune. The novel has been in print ever since its publication, and has been dramatised several times. Braddon also founded Belgravia magazine (1866), which presented readers with serialised sensation novels, poems, travel narratives and biographies, as well as essays on fashion, history and science. The magazine was accompanied by lavish illustrations and offered readers a source of literature at an affordable cost. Condition: In cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart with some shelfwear. Darkening and slight cockling to the cloth of the spines. Some slight marking tothe boards prominent tovolume III. Rear hinge of volume III slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound although the front free endpaper of volume III is working loose. Generally clean with just a few scattered spots. Some tidemarks to the first and last few pages of volume II and the rear endpapers of volume I. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: [Printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press for] Kegan Paul, Trench, & Co, 1889. n. Hardcover. 165 x 105 mm (6 1/2 x 4 1/8"). xxi, [i], 259 pp. VERY PRETTY TURQUOISE CRUSHED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front doublure), covers with wide, swirling gilt frame featuring flowers and broad-leaf plants on a thick bed of stippling, raised bands, spine gilt in densely stippled compartments with tulip and acanthus leaves stamped in relief, INTRICATELY GILT MAROON MOROCCO DOUBLURES with large strapwork mandorla and curling azured leafy vines, maroon moir? silk endleaves, top edge gilt. With wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard.Spine slightly darkened, just a hint of wear to front joint, edges of leaves faintly browned, one leaf with light dampstain to fore margin, but all of these imperfections trivial, and otherwise a fine copy--clean and fresh internally, and in a glistening binding showing almost no signs of use. This is a fine piece of work by Riviere that is appropriately tooled in light of its contents, a collection of English odes selected by Edmund Gosse. Just as the works included here represent a traditional poetic form that finds its roots in the classical world, everything about the gilt embellishment on the binding suggests the archaic--from the acanthus leaves (so prevalent in the decoration of Medieval manuscripts) on the cover to the azured vegetation and strapwork panelling (so frequently seen in 16th century bindings) on the striking doublures. Although he never attended university, the English poet, author, and critic Sir Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928) began his career as assistant librarian at the British Museum. From 1884 to 1890, he lectured in English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in the former year, his successful lecture tour in America earned him considerable fame. A collection of works by Spenser, Milton, Dryden, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, and others, "English Odes" was originally published in 1881, was met with approval, and was reprinted several times.

New Italy: A brief sketch of a new and thriving colony founded and established by the Italian immigrants who were sufferers by the Marquis De Ray's New Ireland colonization scheme.

      - Sydney, Govt Printer 1889. Large octavo publisher's flush cut roan, front cover titled in gilt; [6],30pp & folding map. The title is headed: 'Richmond River District of New South Wales'. As foolishly indulgent as it may seem for such a slender book the edges were marbled. Mackaness copy with his bookplate. This settlement in north east New South Wales must be the first concentrated settlement of Italian agriculturalists in this country. Until recent years this particular aspect of the aftermath of the Marquis de Ray debacle was neglected in most things on the affair - Niau, the daughter of a French survivor, pretty well ignores the Italians in her history 'The Phantom Paradise'. Irregardless of the appalling adventure that led the Italian survivors to the district, New Italy was possibly the most successful semi-utopian communal settlement in Australia. Clifford, who came across the isolated settlement by chance, gives the background, a good account of their virtues and achievements (extolled as models), and their names. His particular interest in viticulture and fairly prolonged discussion of it also makes this necessary for any serious collection of Australian wine books. Journalists who followed Clifford to New Italy were less enthusiastic about describing a thriving success but their criticisms were directed at the authorities, not the settlers.
