Palingenesia Iuris Civilis. Iuris Consultorum reliquiae quae Iustiniani digestis continentur ceteraque Iuris Prudentiae Civilis fragmenta minora secundum Auctores et libros disposuit Otto Lenel.

Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1889.. 2 Bde. 4to. (I:) Tb., 3 Bll., Titelblatt, 1308 Spalten; (II:) Tb., 1264 Spalten. - NDB XIV,204f. (E. Bund); Kleinheyer-Schröder, 2.A., 1996.

3 vols.

Fagerstrand pr. Høvig, Bibliothek for de tusen hjem, (1889). 8vo. 3 vols in later printed full cloth. Bindings with light soiling and miscolouring to spines. All three volumes with ex-libris (Olga Siegfried Wagner). A fine set. (Frontispiece), 445, (1) pp.; (Frontispiece), 456 pp.; (Frontispiece), 488 pp.. The rare first Norwegian translation of Darwin's "The life and letters of Charles Darwin, including an autobiographical chapter" - being the first translation of any of Darwin's works into Norwegian ("Origin" was translated into Norwegian in 1890).A complete Danish translation of the work has never been published and the first Swedish translation did not appear until 1959. Due to the similarities between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, this edition in effect introduced Darwin's letters and autobiography to Scandinavia.Martin Simon Søraas is listed as translator on all three title-pages whereas Freeman lists Peder Jacobsen Ulleland as having translated vol. 1. and Martin Simon Søraas as having translated vol. 2 and 3. Ulleland is listed in Freeman as having translated vol. 1 because he initiated a translation but only finished volume 1. Sørensen (the publisher) quickly discovered that Ulleland did not have the required skills as a translator and Sørensen fired him. Eventually Søraas was hired and he translated all three volumes.         Du sang et de ses altérations anatomiques.

Paris, G. Masson, 1889. "The greatly increased knowledge of the chemistry of hemoglobin was complementary to the studies of Hayem on erythrocytes and hemoglobin in chlorosis." (Wintrobe, p. 173). Dans la drépanocytose (sickle-cell anemia), "Hayem described many real and artifactual distorsions of red cell shape." Australia Twice Traversed

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, Limited, 1889. Two volumes, octavo, with 21 plates, six folding coloured maps and illustrations in the text; in the fully pictorial grey-green cloth boards, lettered in gilt, untrimmed; spines a bit faded and rubbed, slightly loose, corners and extremities slightly frayed; the F.G. Coles copy with bookplate. "The last of the Australian explorers..." First edition: 'arguably the most handsomely produced of late nineteenth-century Australian books' (Wantrup).Giles, with some justice, called himself 'the last of the Australian explorers', and was the first to attempt the crossing from the Telegraph Line to Western Australia. In 1872 he set off from Chambers Pillar with two companions on a modest expedition, financed largely with the help of Ferdinand von Mueller. Failing to cross Lake Amadeus, he turned back, but not before he had traversed some 1000 miles of hitherto uncharted territory. Giles cherished the hope of making a successful crossing, and although 'forestalled by Peter Warburton and John Forrest, Giles succeeded in his cherished aim of making an overland crossing from South to Western Australia in 1875. Equipped with camels by Thomas Elder, he set out from Beltana and went for supplies to Port Augusta whence he proceeded first north-west and then west along a string of waterholes, Wynbring, Ooldea, Ooldabinna and Boundary Dam, until he reached the Western Australian border.' (ADB)Australia Twice Traversed represents the collected narratives of Ernest Giles's five expeditions through the centre and the west of Australia from 1872 to 1876. Giles struggled repeatedly to find an overland route to Western Australia, but it was not until his expedition of 1875-6 that he achieved the extraordinary feat of crossing the continent from South to Western Australia, via the Great Victoria Desert, and returning via Gibson's Desert (which he had earlier named after one of his men). This is among the most handsome of nineteenth-century Australian books, and one of the most popular of all Australian exploration accounts.

On the Electromotive Changes connected with the Beat of the Mammalian Heart, and of the Human Heart in particular (pp.16-194, 9 Fig.).

. Phil. Trans. B., 180 (1889). - London, Harrison & and Sons, 1890, 4°, XI, (1), 357 pp., 39 Taf., Kalbsledereinband der Zeit; feines Exemplar.. First Edition! - Augustus Desire Waller (1856-1922) "was the first to learn that the electric potential of the heart could be recorded from the surface of the intact body; in 1887 he obtained the first electrocardiogram or record of the potential variations from the human heart (Fig. 59). He also obtained electrocardiograms from excised hearts of laboratory animals in an attempt to learn the differences between tracings obtained with electrodes placed on the surface of the body and those obtained with electrodes placed directly upon the heart. - Waller made many observations on man as well as on animals. As a result of his studies, in 1887 he was able to predict, for the first time, the reversal of the electrocardiographic pattern in dextrocardia with situs inversus (Fig. 61). He was also one of the first to conceive of the single dipole to explain the heart's electric field. Although he did not use the term "dipole," it is obvious that he understood the meaning and, to some extent, the significance of the dipole concept. - Waller was not impressed with the diagnostic possibilities of the capillary electrometer. It was Willem Einthoven who saw differences between normal subjects and people with heart disease in the relatively crude records obtained with this instrument, and it was he who realized the need to record cardiac action potentials with greater accuracy. - Between 1893 and 1896, George J. Burch and Willem Einthoven advanced the mathematical theory of the electrocardiogram and devised methods of calibrating and correcting records obtained."

The Heritage of Dedlow Marsh and Other Tales

London: Macmillan. 1889. First. First English edition, issued a few weeks after the American edition. Two volumes. Decorative blue cloth. Slight nicking to the crown of volume one, a nice, very good or better copy. This copy Inscribed by the author on the half-title: "Madame Van de Velde, from her friend Bret Harte, 15 Hamilton Terrace (?), London, N.W. Oct 19:/89." Harte spent the last twenty years of his life in England, where he acquired an agent and a mentor in Hydeline Van de Velde. After the failures of his health and finances in the later part of the 1870s, she encouraged him to write about the American West. Despite the fact that Harte remained married, he stayed with Van de Velde (in some scholarly work he has been described as a "kept" man). He died at her country home and she buried him in the churchyard of St. Peter's, Frimley, England under a red granite stone engraved with a line from one of his own poems: "Death Shall Reap the Braver Harvest." According to BAL this title was advertised for publication on October 18, and the British Museum received their copy on the 19th -- the day this copy was inscribed, thus this is a very early copy and a wonderful association. .
