        SOLARION. A Romance

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, [1889].. First Edition, First Printing. Original Printed Wrappers. Very Good. First Edition. Octavo, original printed wrappers printed in black and orange. The true first edition, issued as Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, September, 1889, with a separate title page for the novel and frontispiece portrait of the author. Minor chipping to covers, spine slightly darkened. Contents are clean, paper is white. Uncommonly encountered, this book is truely rare in the original wrappers. Never published in true book form, but this is considered to be the first edition [as is the Lippincott issue of Doyle's THE SIGN OF THE FOUR, issued in the same format by Lippincott in 1890]. ¶ A major 19th Century Science Fiction novel of the creation of a super-intelligent dog; the dog and his creator are in love with the same woman with disastrous results. Thoughtful and philosophical in tone, similar to SIRIUS by Olaf Stapleton but obviously preceding that work by a great many years. Bleiler summarizes the plot in SCIENCE FICTION: THE EARLY YEARS, citing the work as "An excellent story". Fawcett's Wikipedia page states: "The rather remarkable novels Solarion (about a dog given human intelligence) and Douglas Duane (1885) (on scientific body-switching) as well as The Ghost of Guy Thryle (1895) (which has astral projection as a means of interplanetary travel) deserve to be better known."

De la Loi du Contraste Simultane des Couleurs

1889. CHEVREUL, M.E. De la Loi du Contraste Simultane des Couleurs. [8], xvi, 571, [1] pp. (including reproductions of Chevreul's autograph). With 40 numbered plates (one with overslip) on 22 sheets, all but 3 printed in colour, 9 specimens of coloured paper, 2 folding tables. Of the colour plates, 27 are in nine folding suites of 3 plates each. Thick 4to., 320 x 240 mm, bound in modern wrappers with the original front and rear wrappers laid down, in a new half morocco folding box. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1889. |~||~||~||~| Deluxe Edition of "one of the most influential treatises on colour theory written during the nineteenth century" (DBS), issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition, and the Centenary of the Imprimerie Nationale. The text of the present publication was printed under the supervision of Chevreul's son; the plates were printed under the supervision of M. David who was Chevreul's associate at the Gobelin textile factory. The work is recognized as a comprehensive attempt at providing a systematic basis to seeing colours. The work dealt with the so-called "simultaneous contrast" of colours, and contained Chevreul's famous law: "Two adjacent colours, when seen by the eye, will appear as dissimilar as possible." De La Loi du Contraste Simultané des Couleurs records Chevreul's discovery that colour intensity depends more upon the hues of the adjacent colours than upon a specific pigmentation. He defined the general principles and effects of simultaneous contrast: the modifications of hue and tone occurring when juxtaposed colours are viewed at the same time. Chevreul's work greatly influenced Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Pointillism and Orphic Cubism, with Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) using coloured "simultaneous discs" in his paintings. Although Chevreul's work was never completed, he also influenced the views of both Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) and Georges Seurat (1859-1891) with regard to colours and the way in which they used them. Seeking to provide a scientific basis for Impressionism, they limited their palates to the colours in Chevreul's circle, applying dots of unmixed pigments to their canvases. The influence of Chevreul's theories continue into the twentieth century. Several modern colour-field painters, especially Ellsworth Kelly, are known to have experimented with Chevreul's colour theory. Some minor foxing at beginning and end, but on the whole a handsome copy. Cf. Brunet I, 1842. Wurmfeld, Color Documents 16. Birren Collection 143.         Chuan xing bi du xia jiang tu kao. [The essential chart for navigating the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River]

Shanghai: Xiu hai shan fang shu ju, 1889. Two volumes, oblong 8vo, pp. [9], [53] of charts, [4]; pp. [7], [44] of charts, [5]; occasional foxing, but a very good copy, stitched, as issued, Chinese-style in thin blue paper wrappers, slightly worn at margins, titles on paper labels to front wrappers, in the original blue silk-covered folding case; rubbed at the extremities, preserving one of two bone clasps; printed on double leaves, a few at the beginning of the second volume opened. The charming record of a riverscape now tragically compromised. First edition of the first comprehensive survey of the 'Three Gorges" of the Yangtze River, with a splendid panoramic pictorial map of the river, its course shown from the lower part of the river to the upper reaches; printed continuously on 97 pages, with the complete itinerary of the river from Yichang in Hubei Province to Kuifo (first volume) and from Kuifo to Chongquing, both in Sichuan Province (second volume). The first complete and systematic navigational chart of this famous stretch of water, the map shows both banks of the river in profile, with detailed information on the gorges, including names and locations of towns and villages (some of which are now completely submerged), details of the tidal flows, distances between key points, prominent identifying features and information on hazards such as rocks and whirlpools. Descriptions of the upstream and downstream itineraries are also present, at the beginning and end of each volumes. Several times reprinted, this original edition is of importance as the first comprehensive survey of the Three Gorges before the use of modern surveying techniques, while its illustrations of the settlements and geological features of the gorges provide an important record of a section of the Yangtze which can no longer be visited: the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in 2008 closed the river to small craft navigation and obliterated entire settlements. The hugely controversial project flooded archaeological and cultural sites, displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes.

Photograph. Some staining and tape marks on the verso, but the photograph is sharp and clear. Fine. Fine 7" x 11" studio portrait by Walery, Photographer to the Queen, on a 13" x 18" matted photographer's board. INSCRIBED "with every good wish" to John Drinkwater, fellow actor and theater manager as well as the father of the poet John Drinkwater, and SIGNED and dated 1889 by Irving. The photograph depicts Irving seated holding a book with his inscription placed vertically in the upper blank margin. Born John Henry Brodribb in the Somerset village of Keinton Mandevill, the young Irving grew up in a very religious family where he first acquired an interest in capturing an audience by watching preachers in church. Inspired by his beloved American writer Washington Irving, he changed his name to Henry Irving and began his professional acting career at the age of 18. Successful as both actor and producer, Irving in 1895, at the age of 57, became the first actor ever honored with a knighthood.

Tinted Lithographed Bird's-Eye View of Vancouver Waterfront, Titled:] The Harbour. Vancouver. British Columbia (from photo).

Portland 1889 - [Portland, 1889]. Tinted lithograph ca. 23,5x37 cm (9 3/8 x 23 ½ in). Original centerfold. Recently matted. A minor tear on the top of the centrefold neatly repaired, otherwise a very good lithograph. A plate from "The West Shore: An Illustrated Western Magazin" (Portland, May 1889) depicts the Vancouver waterfront, with the first CPR station (1887) and trains, ships in the harbour, a part of the Deadman's Island, and the North Shore Mountains in the background. The plate illustrated an article "Vancouver, British Columbia" published in the magazine (pp. 227-233). "The rapidly increasing importance of this young and enterprising city entitles it to more than passing note, and The West Shore is pleased to present this month an account of its progress, present conditions and prospects, with illustrations, which will give an excellent idea of the appearance of the city. The capacity of the city for marine commerce can never be outgrown, no matter what magnitude it may attain. Its adaptability to the demands of commerce, the means it has for focusing a large volume of business at that point, and its capacity for expansion, must make Vancouver one of the most important cities of the Pacific coast. The healthful climate and location and altogether pleasant surroundings render it a very desirable residence place, and the control which it exercises over the products of the interior is already making a prominent manufacturing city. As the terminus of the longest single railway line in the world it has an advantage that places it entirely beyond competition, and to this, as well as to its natural features of excellence, is due its phenomenal growth" (p. 227).

Denver: O.O. Howard, Jr., 1889. - Oblong 8vo., (5 6/8 x 8 inches). 25 tinted lithographed plates (last plate slightly toned).         The Manitoba Gazette / Gazzette De Manitoba January to December 1889

Winnipeg: Theophane Bertrand, Queen's Printer, 1889. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. RARE MANITOBA GAZETTE WITH THE CONTROVERSIAL ENGLISH ONLY TRANSITIONBound volume containing weekly Gazettes dated from January 5, 1889 to December 21, 1889 inclusive. Dark board cover. Rubbed boards with a small broken edge to top of back cover, worn corners, and slight wear to ends of spine. Speckling to inside front and back, but gazette pages are age toned. Page [299]-300 small section of page in top missing paper affecting some words. Condition is very good otherwise. A rare 1889 Manitoba Gazette publication that includes the controversial publication transition with the bilingual edition ending on August 31, 1889 and the English only Gazette starting on September 7, 1889. Beyond that, there are many laws and weekly news during the year of 1889 in Manitoba. Quite an interesting and historically important set of 1889 Manitoba Gazettes. As French declined in importance, English-speaking Manitobansincreasingly objected to the maintenance of bilingualism in the Legislature and Courts of the province, on the grounds that it was irrelevant, cumbersome and expensive. The Liberal government of Premier Thomas Greenway, which took office after the general election of 1888, responded to this sentiment by sponsoring changes in the province's language laws. By Order in Council in September 1889, the government suspended publication of the French part of the Manitoba Gazette. This action, it might be argued, was not in conflict with section 23 of the Manitoba Act because the Manitoba Gazette was not a record, journal or act of the Legislature. The Gazette had, however, been published in both languages since the province was establishedin 1870 and the change to English only was a first step towards makingthe province officially unilingual.Text in English and French, Mar. 6, 1880-Aug. 31, 1889; includes some text in French, Sept. 7, 1889- Early Manitoba Government Gazettes are a scarce, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Canada. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of the Province of Manitoba and its people in the past. They contain many thousands of names and places and information from a whole cross section of the community.Issued weekly with occasional special issues, the Manitoba Gazette contains information such as proclamations, land transactions, court notices, notice of acts, public notices, tenders, appointments and resignations, bankrupt and insolvency notices, impoundments, police auctions, unclaimed letters, licenses (publican's, wine and beer, storekeeper's, occupation, and depasturing), notices of protection, dissolution of partnerships, rewards on offer, and more, in both English and French.

        Sport or Fishing and Shooting

Boston: Bradlee Whidden, 1889 - Rare large-format work on sport in late 19th-century America, including Frederic Remington's first two published prints in color, a rare A.B. Frost image of deer-hunting and images from Fred. S. Cozzens and other top illustrators of the day. The plates (with titles taken from the preceding text leaf ) are as follows: 1. Killing the Salmon. Henry Sandham. 2. A Moose hunt. Henry Sandham. 3. Trout fishing. Henry Sandham. 4. Fly-fishing for Black Bass. S.F. Denton. 5. Hunting Antelope [i.e. Prong-horn]. Frederic Remington. 6. Catching a Tarpon. Fred. S. Cozzens. 7. Mallard shooting. S.F. Denton. 8. Catching a Mascalonge. Frank H.Taylor. 9. A Wild Turkey hunt. R.J. Zogbaum. 10. Sailing for Bluefish. Fred S. Cozzens. 11. Hunting the [Virginia] Deer. A.B. Frost. 12. A day with the [Prairie] Chickens. R.F. Zogbaum. 13. A hunt above the timber-line [Big-horn]. Edward Knobel. 14. [Canada] Goose shooting. Frederic Remington. 15. Stalking the Wapiti. Henry Sandham. The two plates by Frederic Remington, 'Hunting Antelope' (Hassrick & Webster 434) and 'Goose Shooting' (Hassrick & Webster 435) are also listed by Peggy and Harold Samuels (Remington The Complete Prints New York, 1990 pp.152-3) with the comment that they are the first and second Remington prints to appear in color. They were preceded only by a series of four monochrome photogravures for John Muir's Picturesque California (1888) and two other individual prints, both black and white. Arthur Burdett Frost is now perhaps best known for his sporting pictures and prints, but his lack of interest in deer-hunting meant that he rarely pictured shooting scenes that featured anything other than small game. His image, 'Hunting the Deer', is recorded, and illustrated, in Henry M. Reed's The A.B. Frost Book (Charleston, 1993, pp.101, 104-5) but the author was apparently unaware that it was issued as part of the present work, which is not included in the extensive appendix of books illustrated by Frost. The present work includes six angling plates (three of fly-fishing), four plates of game-bird hunting and five of hunting larger game. Each of the fifteen subjects is first described in general terms on a single leaf of text, followed by a second leaf giving a first-hand account of catching or shooting the subject, followed by a chromolithograph illustrating the first-hand account. According to Gould's preface, the plates are all from water-colours especially commissioned for the work which were subjected to the critical scrutiny of a group of anglers/sportsmen, who judged them for technical accuracy First edition. Folio (21-1/2 x 15-1/4 inches). 15 chromolithographic plates after Frederic Remington, A.B. Frost, Fred Cozzens and others. 32 ff. letterpress. Period style red straight-grained morocco, spinegilt with raised bands in seven compartments, titled in gilt, brown endpapers. Phillips p. 141; Wetzel p. 146; Sherwin sale (1946) lot 238; Bruns G120; Heller 502; Bennett p.48; Tyler Prints of the West pp.127 & 174; not in Reese Stamped with a National Character [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
