[Journal and Minutes Book]: Heathfield Park Lawn Tennis Club Minutes

London: Heathfield Park Lawn Tennis Club. 1888-1895. Folio ledger book. Approximately 172 pages, with many additional printed insertions. Contemporary quarter burgundy roan over cloth, with printed or stamped label. The binding is worn and displays modest dampstaining but is sound and good, interior is near fine. A bound manuscript and print account of the formation and history of an early London tennis club. The ledger contains minutes, details of meetings, elections and rule making, reports in the ledger signed by various officers of the club, and brackets for tournaments (including ladies' singles, ladies' consolation, and mixed-doubles tournaments). There are over 30 excellent scrap elements neatly tipped into the ledger at the appropriate places: mostly printed ephemera including nicely printed compilations of rules, lists of officers, a large folded broadside of club by-laws, invitations to fancy dress balls, financial reports, autographed letters from correspondents, accounts, and dance cards. The Heathfield Park Lawn Tennis Club was formed in 1888 by Emil Ernst, William Knight, Major R.P.B. Rodick, Dr. Edward E. Barret, and William Whitaker, and based at Willesden Green in North West London. By 1892, several women were elected both into membership and as officers of the club. These records date from the formation of the club until 1895. While tennis in its many iterations existed since the Middle Ages or even earlier, the modern version, as we know it today, was established in 1872, with the first lawn tennis club organized at Leamington Spa in 1874, and the All England Lawn Tennis Club established the Wimbledon Championships in 1877 in order to raise funds. This journal and scrapbook represents a particularly nice overview of the organization of a fashionable tennis club and its administration in the earlier days of organized competitive tennis, little more than a decade after the modern version was established. .

Includes the account of Hewett's mission to Abyssinia. Muhammad Ahmad now called himself Mahdi, i.e. "he who is guided in the right way", proclaimed Jihad or Holy War against the hated Egyptians. His dervish army was successful. In spite of antiquated weapons and obsolete tactics the fanatic and religious devotion paid off. The Egyptian garrisons were forced to surrender and were captured one after another. Mahdi's and Abdullah's Holy War was a struggle for freedom. Their religion was radical Islamic fundamentalism that is now a concern world-wide. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HISTORIC CRIMES. Being a Complete, Graphic and Thrilling Narrative of the Killing of P Barton Key by Maj. General Sickles ; the Notorious Murder of Dr. Parkham by Prof. Webster, in Boston, Mass ; the Brutal Slaughter of the Dearing Family, etc

The Police Gazette New York 1888 - The full title is "HISTORIC CRIMES. Being a Complete, Graphic and Thrilling Narrative of the Killing of P Barton Key by Maj. General Sickles ; the Notorious Murder of Dr. Parkham by Prof. Webster, in Boston, Mass ; the Brutal Slaughter of the Dearing Family, near Philadelphia ; The Celebrated Case of Mrs Cunningham, Dr. Burdell's Alledged Murderess, and Other Startling and Mysterious Crimes. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED. 8vo, size - 8.75 x 5.75 inches, pp.76, numerous black and white images in text, staple binding. The first three pages are unnumbered then remainder are numbered 6 to 78 ; this would indicate that there is a sheet missing from the front (cover sheet ?). There is obviously at least one sheet missing from the back ( the back cover ?) as the end of the last story is not indicated by double ruled lines as seen with other stories in the text. Condtion - please see photographs ; the front page is dusty and shows some marks, mostly around the outside but none are disfiguring, the front top corner shows creasing and chipping and this continues, but diminishes, on to the next 3 sheets, the contents are clean with no inscriptions and no foxing, the back page is also somewhat dusty and shows creasing at the bottom corners. The staples are rusted and the upper bar of the bottom staple has gone but the sections remain together. This appears to be a very rare, early survivor of the titles issued by the Police Gazette chronicling crime and criminals and intended for public consumption. No other copies found online at the time of listing. More photos, if needed, gladly provided on request.

Ah Toy v. Musgrove. A copy of the report of the arguments and judgment in the case of Ah Toy v. Musgrove - Supreme Court of Victoria.

      - Melbourne, Government Printer 1888. Foolscap, excellent in a modern plain wrapper; 164pp. A quick dash through Quick and Garran's Annotated Constitution reinforces the sense of the momentous that surrounds this case. Toy v. Musgrove appears again and again cited as a "great" and "celebrated" case. Chung Teong Toy, a thwarted Chinese immigrant who arrived in Melbourne on the Afghan in April 1888, brought his case - backed by the Chinese Residents Association - against Musgrove, the Collector of Customs, for refusing to accept payment of the poll-tax of ten pounds demanded from Chinese immigrants. Without getting too bogged down in details Musgrove's defence was that he had been ordered to refuse entry to all the Chinese on the Afghan. The Supreme Court found - four judgments to two - in favour of the plaintiff and ruled that the Colony did not have the right to exclude aliens. One of the Justices - Justice Williams - was reluctant to concur; it left the colony "in this most unpleasant and invidious position", unable to prevent "the scum or desperadoes of alien nations from landing . whenever it may suit them." This of course was unacceptable and an appeal was made to the Privy Council. In the meantime the colonies used quarantine regulations to exclude Chinese immigrants where they could and quietly let in some handfuls where they couldn't do otherwise. Amongst the outrage and furor the suggestion was made that the authorities knew they were acting illegally; a sardonic Melbourne journalist wrote, "But isn't it a curious thing that our authorities should have been induced to go to illegal lengths under the spur of excitement and public clamour. I am told privately that at the time they were warned by council that they were exceeding the limits of their constitutional prerogative, but they felt so sure of having the public at their back that they took the risk. And now an opium-smoking, yellow-skinned Mongolian has given them a lesson they (or rather the country) will have to pay for to a pretty tune." (from the Traralgon Record, 14 Sept 1888). The appeal to the Privy Council not only succeeded in 1891 but, as I understand it, fortified the bastion of government immunity by refusing to accept that an alien "can, in an action in a British court, compel the decision of such matters as these, involving delicate and difficult constitutional questions affecting the respective rights of the Crown and Parliament, and the relations of this country to her self-governing colonies." It should be noted here that I came across this quote not by reading the Privy Council decision but reading the summary of 'Fong Yue Ting v. United States' in the US Supreme Court in 1893. Saddest from this distance is that, reading of the activities of the Chinese Residents Assocation, it appeared to many that progress was made: the short-lived victories of this case and the grudging admission of those handfuls of Chinese immigrants seemed a great step forward. Of course all colonial governments doubled their efforts and collectively triumphed with the White Australia Policy come federation. What I can't find among the thousands of words written about this case is what happened to Chung Teong Toy. Trove finds three copies of this, two dated a century wrong.

Two good autograph letters signed to Miss Sturge; almost certainly Emily Sturge (1847–1892) the campaigner for women's education and suffrage. The letters refering to his lectures on civilization in America, delivered shortly before his death.

Pains Hill Cottage, Cobham, Surrey, 1888. The first letter, 3-sides 8vo, dated 17th January 1888, the second letter 1-page 8vo with conjugate blank, dated 7th February 1888. In the first letter he writes: "My giving the lecture must really depend, as I told Mr. Fitch, upon whether I find it goes well to an audience. The subject is a dangerous one, the Americans being so very sensitive; and if I find the restraints exercised by this, cramps the discourse, I shall supress the production after I have performed an old promise to the Hull people by speaking there. After all one cannot tell how a lecture will do until one has tried it out on an audience. I speak at Hull on the 31st, and mean to keep the lecture out of the hands of the reporters.....". In the second letter he writes: "I find that what I have to say about Life in America seems to interest an audience so I will, if you still desire it, come & repeat at Bristol what I have been saying at Hull & Bradford....." and continues by suggesting possible dates. In excellent condition. With the original two autograph envelopes addressed to Miss Sturge at Chilliswood, Tyndall's Park, Clifton, Bristol. Nicholas Murray in his Life of Matthew Arnold (Hodder & Stoughton 1996) notes that at the beginning of January Arnold had written to George Brodrick, the warden of Merton College, Oxford, to say "I am just off for the North to make a horrid discourse about America at Hull" and he confided to Lady Rothschild that the first of these 'horrid' performances was on 'a very ticklish subject' the quality of civilization in America. The first discourse was given at Hull on 31st January at the Literary & Philosophical Society, the second at Bradford 3 days later, and the third at Bristol on the 8th of March. It was published as 'Civilization in the United States' in the April number of the 'Nineteenth Century'.

        Nouveaux contes cruels

Librairie illustrée, Paris 1888 - In-12 (156 x 98 mm), 150 pp., 1 f. n. ch. 1092.         THE BOOK OF THE GRAYLING: Being a description of the fish and the art of angling for him, as practiced chiefly in the Midlands and the North of England, By T.E. Pritt. With three illustrations in chromo-lithography from original drawings by the author.

Goodall & Suddick. Leeds. - 1888 1st edition. Small 4to (160 x 248mm). Ppviii,64. Illustrated with a folded coloured frontispiece of a grayling, and two other coloured chromo-lithographed plates (one of grayling flies, and one of floats and the dorsal fin of a grayling. Binding C: Brown cloth with bevelled edges, gilt spine title, blind rules and a gilt quotation from Walton on upper board, patterned end-papers. Front inner hinge cracked & slight browning but a very good copy. The classic work on North Country grayling fishing. It is divided into two chapters: "All about Him" and "When, Where, and How to Catch Him." There are three colour plates : 1 fold out of a grayling, 1 of flies and 1 of floats and the dorsal fin of a grayling plus 2 pages of advertisements. The author "sketches lightly the habits and habitat of the fish as they were accepted fifty years ago, following with some capital pages on autumn fishing with the wet fly, and giving dressings of fifteen flies selected by well-known grayling fishers of his time. The rest of the slender volume is mostly occupied by excellent descriptive notes on the popular North Country form of grayling fishing known as 'swimming the worm.' Pritt wrought - and wrote - well as a pioneer, but he only touched the fringe of what has grown into a big subject, and he had not entirely shaken off the hackles of traditional fallacy." (W. Carter Platts. Grayling Fishing. 1939). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Die Suggestion und ihre Heilwirkung. Mit Abbildungen im Text. Autorisirte deutsche Ausgabe von Sigm. Freud.

Deuticke,, Leipzig - Wien, 1888 - Leipzig - Wien, Deuticke, 1888. XXVI + 414 + 1 S. Priv. HLwd. der Zeit. DEA. - Ebd. stärker berieben, tlw. leicht stockfleckig, T. m. hds. Bleistift-Notiz, leichte Gbrsp. - Freud promovierte 1881. (DBE). Deutsch [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Unteres Kapital u. Ecken bestoßen u. berieben, Text papierbedingt gebräunt u. z. Tl. fingerfleckig, im hint. Falz aufgeplatzt. Henze I, 200 ff. VOYAGE OF WILL ROGERS TO THE SOUTH POLE.

Launceston, Tasmania: Printed at the "Examiner" and "Tasmanian" Office, [1888] - Small octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-40, original dark green pebble-grain limp cloth wrappers, front cover stamped in black, floral endpapers. First edition. First-person fictional account (presented as a factual memoir) of an English sailor, separated from his whaler in the antipodes and cast up on a warm Antarctic land with unusual flora and fauna and an intelligent race of ethically-advanced people, the Bencolians. This 17,000-word Robinsonade thus merges into a utopian fantasy. The hero declines the temptation of remaining there as an honored guest and, taking with him some gold dust and a large diamond, he sets off in a handmade boat and finds a ship to bring him home. An unusual aspect of the story, running counter to the usual social values of British fiction in this period, is the hero's decision, in spite of his sudden wealth, "to keep in business, as it was an occupation, which everyone ought to have, whether well off or not." A pleasantly told -- if unspectacular, tale -- and a very scarce book, with no copies recorded in any of the libraries of COPAC (including the British Library). This book was one of Stuart's major lacunae for many years. Blackford, et al., Strange Constellations: A History of Australian Science Fiction, p. 20; 228.         GULISTAN OR ROSE GARDEN OF SA'DI, Faithfully Translated into English

Benares: Printed by the Kama Shastra Society for Private Subscribers Only, 1888. First Edition, printed for private subscribers only. 8vo, bound in publisher? s original full stiff vellum with gilt ruled and lettered spine, the covers bevelled and with blind ruled borders. viii, 282 pp. An excellent copy, fine and very well preserved with some light and of course, expected mellowing to the white vellum. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT BURTON ITEM, and according to Penzer (p. 177), the distinction between the first and second issue of the book is only the presence of the date on the spine. As a possible indication of this book's scarcity, Penzer quotes 17 sale room prices for Burton's KAMA SUTRA, 10 for the ANANGA RANGA, 26 for the PERFUMED GARDEN, but only three for the GULISTAN. The Persian poet Sa?di wrote ?The Rose Garden? in 1258. It has readership throughout Asia and Africa, and has been translated into Latin, English, French, German, and Dutch. The Kama Shastra Society wished to introduce the first complete and unexpurgated translation into English, and succeeded in issuing a work of elegance and simplicity. The text includes chapters on the morals of Dervishes, the advantages of Silence, on love and old age, and on rules of conduct in life. An important edition of this Persian Classic.
