Mother Lifting Child, Plate 214 from Animal Locomotion

1887 - MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard. "Mother Lifting Child," Plate 214 from Animal Locomotion. [Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania, 1887]. Single large folio sheet, measuring 23-1/2 by 18 inches (colotype image measures 14-1/4 by 7-1/4 inches, apart from letterpress); mat size: 25-1/4 by 20-3/4 inches. $3500.Original "Author's Edition" collotype of multiple sequential studies of a mother lifting her child, from the most significant photographic work on the natural motion of animals. To settle a $25,000 bet that a galloping horse leaves the ground completely, former governor of California Leland Stanford hired photographer Eadweard Muybridge to determine whether or not his claim might be true. Muybridge designed an elaborate photographic system that combined batteries of multiple cameras with rapid shutter mechanisms, in an effort to capture the horse with all four feet off the ground. Stanford won his bet. These were the first successful sequential photographs of rapidly moving objects, and Muybridge would devote the rest of his life to similar photographic studies"" with the help of painter Thomas Eakins, who successfully persuaded the University of Pennsylvania to subsidize Muybridge's further experimentations. Between 1884 and 1886 Muybridge and his team produced 20,000 negatives of various animals and humans in motion, which were then arranged on 781 plates and printed in 1887 as Animal Locomotion. This magnificent sequence of a mother lifting her child is plate number 214, with penciled caption in bottom corner, "Lifting child from ground and turning. Same model as last." See Frizot, 244ff.; Grolier, Truthful Lens 123. Professionally cleaned, archivally matted. A historic piece. Scarce. [Attributes: First Edition]

Portrait of the author (in two states) & many photogravure plates (some in color & some double-page). xxiv, 156 pp., one leaf; 2 p.l., v, 161 pp., one leaf. Two vols. Large 4to (300 x 215 mm.), orig. printed wrappers bound in embroidered bindings designed by Marius Michel (detailed description below), t.e.g., others uncut. Paris: H. Launette, 1887-90. [bound with at the end of the second volume]:-. Decorative head-pieces. 62 pp., one leaf. Large 4to, orig. printed wrappers bound in. Paris: H. Launette, 1887. The author's own set, so stated on the limitation page, assembled in the most luxurious state from the issue limited to 25 copies printed on Japan paper, bound in two highly important embroidered bindings by Marius Michel. This set of the Histoire contains a double suite of all the photogravure plates and text illustrations in different states. The Bibliographie aèronautique is numbered "1" of 25 copies on Japan paper. Chemist, meteorologist, author, and aviator Gaston Tissandier (1843-99), and his brother Albert were the most famous balloonists of their time. They were the first to successfully power an airship using an electric motor. Gaston's history of ballooning was the standard work for many years and his bibliography was the first to be compiled on the subject of aviation. It is hard to imagine a more elaborate and luxurious set of these two works: the author's own copies, printed specially on Japan paper and limited to 25 copies each, with double sets of illustrations in different states, and bound in two superb and important embroidered bindings designed by and executed for Marius Michel. These works were exhibited at the magnificent and ground-breaking exhibition "Livres en Broderie," organized by Sabine Coron and Martine Lefèvre in 1995 at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. The bindings are described as follows: original brown morocco, spines in five compartments & lettered in gilt; inset panels on each cover with elaborately embroidered floral scenes with pale green silk backgrounds, framed with alternating shades of brown & silver wire, flowers in various hues ranging from pale blue to dark red, each flower also framed with silver wire; each upper cover with a balloon ascending in the upper right hand corner, the balloon on Vol. I with the legend: "Sic itur ad astra," the balloon on Vol. II with a different design; the lower covers both having the same design but each employing different ranges of colors. The embroidery is very fine and fresh. Doublures with quintuple fillets in gilt and red silk endpapers. Morocco chemises and slipcases. Top edges gilt, others uncut. ? BnF, Livres en Broderie. Reliures françaises du Moyen Age à nos Jours, item 124-(with illustration in color).

        Applicazioni geometriche del calcolo infinitesimale

Fr.lli Bocca, 1887. In 8, pp. XII + 334 + (1) + (1) di errata con ill. n.t. Legatura in mz. pl. coeva.

THE MERRY MEN and Other Tales and Fables

1887. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1887. 4 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First American Edition of this collection of tales, some of which (like "Thrawn Janet" and "Markham") are along the same vein as JEKYLL AND HYDE - Stevenson called such stories his "creepers." This copy is in yellow wrappers (others were bound in red cloth and offered at a higher price).~This is a very good copy, with minor soil, wrinkling and edge-wear of the very delicate wrapper -- rather remarkable condition, actually, for so fragile a volume. In our experience the American edition (in cloth or especially in wrappers) is much scarcer than the English one, even on this side of the Atlantic. Beinecke 413; Princeton 33A, copy 2.

3 sehr großformatige Aufriss-Ansichten des Burgtheaters in (vermutl.) Lithographie.

Wien, Staatsdruckerei, ca. 1887. - Ca. 66 x 101 cm (2 x) u. 67,5 x 153 cm (Papier gering gebräunt u. tls. minimal braunfleckig, einige Einrisse alt hinterlegt, Faltspuren). Vgl. Czeike I, 523 f. (Burgtheater), III, 69 (Carl v. Hasenauer) u. Thieme-B. Daneben veröffentlichte Pecht in verschiedenen Tageszeitungen (u.a.
