Kyosai gadan [Kyosai's Account of Painting]

Tokyo: Iwamoto Shun, 1887 [Meiji 20]. First Edition. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Very Good. Two parts in four volumes. Woodblock printed in colors. 'Part I gives Gyosai's thoughts on painting; part II, a life of the artist by his pupil Baitei Gaso. One of the novelties of the book is the introduction of a synopsis in English (of a kind) of the Japanese text. The artist's ability to reproduce any Japanese style is remarkable and alarming.'--British Library catalog. Kyosai (1831-1889) was one of the great Meiji-era artists. This book presents both a history of Japanese art as well as Western influences on the island nation. His guide to painting is crudely translated into English. In order to make his points, Kyosai reproduces works by several centuries of famous artists, with a breadth of styles from realist, romantic, primitive, refined, and grotesque (to apply Western labels). The printing is rather crude, giving the art an urgency and conveying Kyosai's passion for art and the history of art. It is rare that an artist is so able to take advantage of the severe limitations of a medium and turn them into an advantage. It reminds your humble cataloguer of the mimeograph revolution in poetry (again, a Western reference, for which I apologize), where poor printing quality emphasized the poets' need for self-expression and the desire to break new artistic ground. Kyosai gadan is a truly magnificent illustrated book, filled with goblins, courtesans, and chickens. Hillier & Smith 1980, 147. First edition (first printing). Four volumes near fine in wrappers with paper labels; bound with green thread. Folding case good only, with old tape repairs on the inside joints; the title written in ink on the spine, and the loss of both bone ties. Previous owner's chop in each volume. A presentable copy of a scarce and important book.

The Song of Songs. With 26 etchings from designs by Edmond Hedouin and Emile Boilvin. From designs by Bida.

Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Co., 1887. 25 cm x 32 cm. 47 pages. 21 illustrations in black and white. Original hardcover. Excellent condition extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear. The Song of Songs also known as the Song of Solomon, Canticles, or the Canticle of Canticles, is one of the "scrolls" (megillot) of the Writings (Ketuvim), the last section of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible. It is also the fifth book of Wisdom in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the Song of Songs is read every Friday night for the divine loving union they see in it; Ashkenazim chant it on the Sabbath during Passover, marking the beginning of the grain harvest and commemorating the Exodus from Egypt.nScripturally, the Song of Songs is unique in its celebration of sexual love. It gives "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy". The "daughters of Jerusalem" form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader.nJewish tradition reads it as an allegory of the relationship between God and Israel. Christian tradition, in addition to appreciating the literal meaning of a love song between man and woman, has read the poem as an allegory of Christ and his "bride", the Christian Church.

"The Palace of Pleasure" from Faust. Original set design for a production at the Empire Theatre, London, 1895. Signed and dated by the artist "Wilhelm inv. del 1895" at lower right. From the important collection of dance historian George Verdak (1923-1993)

An attractive, carefully executed, elaborately detailed design. Pitcher (most commonly referred to as Wilhelm) worked as a set and costume designer for ballets, pantomimes, comic operas, musical comedies, and Shakespearian and other theatrical productions. He is perhaps best-known for his work for the Empire Theatre in London from 1887 to 1915, where he designed both sets and costumes for numerous ballets, many of which starred Adeline Genée (she performed the skirt dance at the Empire Theatre in 1899 in "Round the Town Again"). He also contributed a number of articles to The Magazine of Art, including one entitled "Art in Ballet" in 1895. "Wilhelm was one of the most prolific stage designers of his day... For 20 years before World War I he was (in all but name) artistic director of ballet at the Empire Theatre, London. He wrote the scenarios and co-ordinated choreography, music and design into a coherent whole, ahead of similar concepts by the great choreographer Michael Fokine at the Diaghilev ballet. Wilhelm had great taste and his costumes were designed with strong attention to detail... His designs seem superficially charming, but are actually very practical, perfectly depicting in watercolour the fabrics he wanted the makers to use as well as indicating the character for which the design was intended." Website of the Victoria and Albert Museum "The legend of Faust has been a recurringly popular theme in dance. In 1723 John Rich presented his ballet pantomime The Necromancer or the History of Dr Faustus at the Lincolns Inn Fields theatre in London and during the 19th century there was a rash of Faust-inspired ballets... [including] Lanner's Faust" with music by M. Lutz and E. Ford, performed at the Empire Theatre in London in 1895. The Oxford Dictionary of Dance, p. 163. Verdak, noted ballet dancer and choreographer, was an important collector of historical documents and works of art relating to the dance, assembling a large and important archive over many years. After dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and other companies, he became artistic director of the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre and professor of Dance at Butler University. While Wilhelm's costume designs are held in various public collections, his far more intricate set designs are not widely held and are rarely offered on the market.. Executed in watercolour and body colour on paper. 295 mm. x 380 mm. (11-5/8" x 14-7/8"). Three light vertical folds; 35 mm. tear to lower margin; remnants of old matting and glue to outer edge of mat; laid down to mat board. Provenance: The George Verdak Collection.

Collection of 57 albumen prints by Charles T. Scowen, Lala Deen Diyal, and other photographers. Mounted on cardboard and with contemporary handwritten captions.

India, 1886-1887. - Measurements of prints mainly between ca 155 x 195 and 225 x 280 mm. Cardboard measurements 285 x 359 mm. In stable leather box with brass snap-lock; covers and sides gilt; top with gilt lettering "Indien 1886-87". Collection from the possession of the Austrian Imperial ensign Ferdinand Bublay, who was later to take part in the second circumnavigation of the world by the corvette "Fasana" (1893ff.). Contains 9 photos of Sri Lanka (Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura), 6 of Bombay (with the temple of Karli), 6 of Jaipur (and Amber), 3 of Delhi, 15 of Agra (of which 6 show the Taj Mahal), 4 of Lucknow, 1 of Benares, 6 of Calcutta, 5 of Darjeeling (and the Himalaya), as well as 2 pictures of natives (without precise location). Among the largely unsigned photographs are also several which can be attributed to important artists. At least three of the Ceylon photos are by Charles T. Scowen (fl. 1873-90); another of Jaipur is signed by Lala Deen Dayal (also: Diyal; 1844-1911); two others can be attributed to him due to his characteristic negative numbers. - Scowen arrived in Ceylon early in the 1870s, where he built up a successful studio within a few years. "His photographs have been judged technically and compositionally superior to the work of other British photographers working in the area. His prints show the natives at home and at work as well as the natural beauty of the island and its plant species" (National Galleries of Scotland). His pictures of the island are to be found in many important collections, among them the British Library, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Getty Museum, and the New York Metropolitan Museum. - Deen Dayal probably learnt the photography trade at the Thomason Civil Engineering College in Roorkee in 1863. After working for several years as an engineer and draughtsman in Indore, he in 1874 began his activity as a professional photographer (photo portraits of the Viceroy and the Prince of Wales, e. g.). His company remained one of the most important in India up until his death. "Much of this pre-eminence was accounted for by the sponsorship of both Europeans and Indians in high places: he was chosen to accompany Sir Henry Daly on his tour of the Bundalkund Agencies and in 1882 travelled through central India with Sir Lepel Griffin. The most important of these patrons however was the Nizam of Hyderabad who in 1884 appointed him state photographer and paved the way for his similar employment by a number of Viceroys" (Janus Archive Catalogue, Cambridge Univ.). - Very well preserved throughout in the original reddish-brown or purple, occasionally also slightly yellowish tone; virtually no signs of fading.         ENZO MANFREDINI.
