THE OFFICIAL STATE ATLAS OF KANSAS, COMPILED FROM GOVERNMENT SURVEYS; COUNTY RECORDS AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS.

      L. H. Everts & Co., 1887., Philadelphia - First edition. Folio. 18" x 15" x 3" Original calf spine and corners and cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, 339 numbered pages (plus many more unnumbered pages of views), preface, illustrated by hundreds of colored maps and plates in black & white. Twenty-five colored folding maps. A large 30.9 cm. x 70,9 cm. [12 1/4" x 28"] folding map. This is the first large atlas for the state of Kansas. Six Score 83 says "These atlases were designed so that pages could be tipped in. I doubt that any two copies are exactly alike." "This massive compilation contains a vast wealth of information on Kansas at the time of publication. Many of the views depict stock ranches, which are also located on the extremely detailed maps. There are many bird's eye views of towns and sights. Much of the accompanying text is devoted to listing the leading citizens of the state, their property, what kind of livestock they raise, and even what kind of fencing they use. The Everts' atlas is an important source for much information, with illustrations existing nowhere else." Rumsey 2818 says "The views show the remarkable development of the state over two decades after the Civil War." Several pages in the "content" section of pages have small chips (repaired) with minor loss of lettering, also a few minor fore-edge repairs to the margin of a few pages at the rear of the volume, and some light cosmetic restoration to the front and rear leather corners of the covers, the maps and plates are in fine, bright condition, else a very good, tight copy of a beautiful cartographic production. The coloring is bright and this is a tough book to find in even good condition because of its size and weight. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        THE MONARCH OF DREAMS

Boston: Lee and Shepard, Publishers, 1887.. Small octavo, pp. [1-6] [1-6] 7-52 [53-58: blank] [note: first three and last three leaves are blanks], original decorated brown cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, endpapers decorated with floral pattern printed in green. First edition. A presentation copy inscribed by Higginson to fellow American man of letters [James] Brander Matthews (1852-1929): "Brander Matthews / with regards of / the author / Cambridge, Mass / Jan 1, 1887." A man's ego is trapped in its interior world of fantasy as the result of a scientific experiment. The protagonist, Francis Ayrault, moves to an isolated farmhouse in a New England country village to conduct dream research, the object being to cause his dreams to recur by conscious thought and "render himself what no human being had ever yet been, -- the ruler of his own dreams." His experiment is successful, but his ego is ultimately enslaved by the dream world he has created. He neglects the world of everyday external life with tragic results and descends into madness. H. Bruce Franklin calls Higginson's novelette "extraordinary" in Future Perfect, his critical anthology of nineteenth-century American science-fiction. "At a time when the reading populace of the western world was excitedly consuming the most bizarre and perhaps truly earthshaking psychological researches, Higginson presented as a kind of archetypal psychological explorer a new variant of of Hawthorne's scientist -- still isolated, obsessed, and overreaching -- but now manipulating no one or thing but himself." - Franklin, p. 252. Reginald 37835. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). BAL 8346. Wright (III) 2670. A fine, bright copy. A very elusive book. (#136056)

Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front cover in black. Binding stained and rubbed, worn at the edges, spine rolled, spotting to edges, some minor spotting and damp staining, but not affecting the text. A good copy of a scarce title. Entirely New and Enlarged Edition" of Thomas's classic, this Behrens' uncommon provincial Connecticut issue (with cancel title page) of the Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, New York, reprint. This classic cocktail book, by Jerry Thomas ("the father of American mixology"), was first published in 1862 by Dick & Fitzgerald, New York. It was the first ever comprehensive guide to the mixing of drinks and the making of the cocktail, "the first legitimate American culinary art … the first uniquely American cultural product to catch the world's imagination" (Wondrich, Imbibe! … a Salute in Stories and Drinks to 'Professor' Jerry Thomas, Pioneer of the American Bar, p. 11). The 1887 edition updates the collection with drinks that gained popularity in the 1880s such as the Martinez (claimed to be a prelude to the Martini) and a variant of the Manhattan. The first printing of the 1887 was by the same Dick & Fitzgerald, and had a Preface leaf and publisher's advertisements. It was around this time that the company became the Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, and as such the edition was reprinted from the same plates, but without the Dick & Fitzgerald preface and ads. This is the provincial version of that reprint.

Gizeh. Southern View of the Great Pyramids

Buffalo, NY: American Polytechnic Company, 1887. very good. Color lithograph. Image measures 12" x 18". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate IV. This beautiful color lithograph provides a southern view of the Great Pyramids in Gizeh. Published in 1887, the image situates the three largest monuments along the horizon line such that they divide the orange desert landscape from the hazy green sky. A gathering of three cloaked shepherds to the right of the composition echoes the pyramids' iconic triangular form, yet it is clear from the vast expanse of implied space between that the pyramids tower above them. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This print image itself is in very good condition except for very minor foxing in the sky and discoloration at the right margin. The bottom left corner of the page has been torn off, but it does not interfere with the image. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.

        Fine Photograph of "Virginia Cascades".

[1887]. 1887 - Fine albumen print, mounted on archival matt (5 x 8 inches; 11 x 14 inches), of the Virginia Cascades, number 58 pencilled lower left-hand corner. Provenance: from the library of William E. Hofman, his sale Christie's 3rd December, 2010, lot 343 A magnificent view of the cone of the celebrated Virginia Cascade in Yellowstone National Park, by official Yellowstone Park photographer Frank Jay Haynes. Virginia Cascade can be found between "Norris and Canyon on the Gibbon River. Ed Lamartine gave the name in 1886. Lamartine was the foreman in charge of building the first road through the area. The feature entranced early visitors who passed Virginia Cascade on the dusty stage road" (Yellowstone National Park online). Yellowstone, was the world's first national park, and "is situated mainly in Wyoming and extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established in 1872 by Congress, primarily because of its geysers, but also because of its remarkable assemblage of wildlife and unusual natural features. The "national park idea" pioneered at Yellowstone eventually spread worldwide. In the United States, Mackinac Island National Park (now a Michigan state park) was established in 1875 and Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks in 1890. (Yosemite had been a California state park since 1864.) Yellowstone remains the "mother park" in the U.S. national park system, which by the 1990s included 376 sites. The celebrated photographer Haynes was first hired as the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad and "given his own travelling studio in a converted rail car, Haynesproduced numerous famous images of the railroad's construction projects and of sites along its route. He held that position for nearly three decades. He also was appointed in 1884 as Yellowston's official photographer and sold materials from a store in the park itself. He retired in 1916. His images of Yellowstone are among his more important and dramatic imagery" (see Dorothy Sloan, Western Americana,10/18/2006, lot 254). "Boasting about three-quarters of the world's geysers (of which Old Faithful is the most famous) and over half of the thermal features, it also has one of the globe's most spectacular canyons, one of North America's most celebrated waterfalls, and more than 225 permanent waterfalls higher than fifteen feet. It has the premier wildlife sanctuary (and the top three trout-fishing streams) in the continental United States. Unmatched in the variety and number of its megafauna, the park shelters the world's largest concentration of elk and is one of the last remaining strongholds of the grizzly bear in the coterminous states. It is the only site in the United States (and one of only two in the world) where a wild bison herd has survived continuously since ancient times. At the center of the largest relatively intact ecosystem in the North Temperate Zone, its hundreds of lakes, creeks, mountains, and valleys survive in essentially pristine condition. As in all major parks, Yellowstone's administrators debate the appropriate forms of intervention to protect this delicate ecosystem and strive to balance the competing claims of public access and wilderness preservation" (see Aubrey L. Haines, The Yellowstone Story, 1996; James Pritchard, Preserving Yellowstone's Natural Conditions: Science and the Perception of Nature, 1999).

The Bar-Tender's Guide, or How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks Containing Clear and Reliable Directions for Mixing All the Beverages Used in the United States, Together with the Most Popular British, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish Recipes; Embracing Punches, Juleps, Cobblers, etc., etc., in Endless Variety.

Danbury: Behrens Publishing Company, 1887 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front cover in black. Binding stained and rubbed, worn at the edges, spine rolled, spotting to edges, some minor spotting and damp staining, but not affecting the text. A good copy of a scarce title. "Entirely New and Enlarged Edition" of Thomas's classic, this Behrens' uncommon provincial Connecticut issue (with cancel title page) of the Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, New York, reprint. This classic cocktail book, by Jerry Thomas ("the father of American mixology"), was first published in 1862 by Dick & Fitzgerald, New York. It was the first ever comprehensive guide to the mixing of drinks and the making of the cocktail, "the first legitimate American culinary art the first uniquely American cultural product to catch the world's imagination" (Wondrich, Imbibe! a Salute in Stories and Drinks to 'Professor' Jerry Thomas, Pioneer of the American Bar, p.

The Four Sides of the Obelisk. (Cleopatra's Needle.)

Buffalo, NY: American Polytechnic Company, 1887. Limited. very good(+). Color lithograph. Image measures 18" x 11 1/2". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XXXIV. This color lithograph artfully renders the four sides of the so-called Cleopatra's Needle, famously relocated to New York's Central Park in 1880. Below each side of the obelisk is the square design which adorns the matching part of the pyramid at the obelisk's point. Published only 7 years after the obelisk's relocation, this fascinating print attests to the rapidity of the deterioration which the structure suffered when exposed to New York's climate and pollution. Particularly on the south and west sides, the legibility of the hieroglyphics has been appropriately compromised. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, published in 1887 and considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This copy of the print is in fantastic condition, with very minor foxing on the right side and minimal edge discoloration.

THE OFFICIAL STATE ATLAS OF KANSAS, COMPILED FROM GOVERNMENT SURVEYS; COUNTY RECORDS AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS.

Philadelphia: L. H. Everts & Co., 1887., 1887. First edition. First edition.
