THE BECKONING HAND AND OTHER STORIES ..

London: Chatto and Windus, 1887.. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii-viii] [1] 2-341 [342: blank] [343: publisher's device] [344: blank] + 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "September, 1886" inserted at rear, inserted frontispiece with illustration by Townley Green, original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in white, spine panel in gold, rear panel publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel, top and fore-edge untrimmed, brown coated endpapers. First edition. Collection of thirteen stories, reprinted from various magazines and newspapers. The author closes his brief preface thus: "If anybody reads them and likes them, let me take this opportunity (as an unprejudiced person) of recommending to him my other volume of 'Strange Stories,' which I consider every bit as gruesome as this one." That volume, published in 1884, was the first of four collections Allen published over the next fifteen years, solidifying a reputation as, among other things, an author of weird, criminous, controversial and sensational tales. A fifth volume (TWELVE TALES, (1899) represented his own selection from them. The present collection was his second and is nearly as scarce as the first (STRANGE STORIES). The title story calls on his experience in Jamaica to help create a strong tale of voodoo. "The Third Time" is a dark story about alcoholism. "The Gold Wulfric" is a numismatic mystery. "The Two Carnegies" explores in a tragic mode the uncanny connection between identical twins. "Olga Davidoff's Husband" is set in Siberia and Kent and mixes violence and love. "John Cann's Treasure" concerns a treasure hunt based on a 17th-century manuscript written in cipher; things end badly. "The Search Party's Find" is a criminious horror tale set in the Arctic. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 19. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. Hubin (1994), p. 11. Wolff, who had a nearly complete collection of Allen's fiction, had neither this title nor a first edition of STRANGE STORIES. Slight spine lean, cloth rubbed at spine ends, corner tips and along outer joints, a couple of small rubs and spots to cloth, a very good copy. (#147992)

"Magia blanca y magia prieta" - Color Woodcut Print

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Striking color woodcut proof for the cover of a magic book, by the great engraver known as the "Printmaker to the Mexican People." Titled "Magia blanca y magia prieta" (White magic and dark magic), the image shows a magician, an angel, a fearsome devil and many more symbols of sorcery. The name of the printer, Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, who published many of Posada's works, appears at the lower right. Printed in black, red, and brown inks. Overall toning, light ink smudging on parts of the print, slightly irregularly trimmed, with light wear and one chip to the lower edge; otherwise in fine condition for a proof. 8.75 x 6.75 inches (22.1 x 17 cm).The artist, engraver, folk illustrator, and political cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada came out of poverty to become one of Mexico's most important artists, a creative mouthpiece of the common man and an influence on later artists such as muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. "In 1887, he joined the Antonio Vanegas Arroyo Publishing House, doing illustrations for a wide variety of printed publications, many of which had editions in the thousands... Posada knew his intended audience well; most were poor, illiterate and enjoyed the sensational aspect of any story. Using well-known symbols, and with an uncanny journalistic sense, Posada was able to identify a hierarchy of interests for the common man: family, work, neighborhood, government, disasters, religion and the supernatural. His illustrations, which were always linked to a story, were graphic reports that read from left to right. Posada was a master of composition and chiaroscuro (dark/light) and his prints always convey a feeling of action and movement...His political drawings reveal a deep social consciousness; Posada was a moralist whose criticism was aimed at everyone, not just the obvious government officials. His personal and artistic integrity were well-known, even though he worked for much of his life in complete obscurity. He died in 1913 and was buried in a common grave." First edition, with three engraved folding plates, of Santorini's most important contribution to medical science, containing the "major discoveries for which Santorini is known eponymically" (Garrison-Morton). The text is accompanied by three folding copperplates which beautifully illustrate the musculature of the face, the pelvic musculature and genitalia of a sixteen-year-old girl with a tubal pregnacy, the external muscles of the ear, and detailed anatomy of the male genitalia and larynx" (Heirs of Hippocrates).         De gedenkwaardige en al-om beroemde voyagien der Spanjaarden na West-Indiën, namentlijk in het Zuyder- en Noorder-gedeelte van het eertijds onbekende America ... Alles onlangs uyt het Spaans in 't Nederlands getrouwelijk vertaalt ... Het tweede stuk.Leiden, Pieter van der Aa, [ca. 1711]. Second volume (of 2). 1mo. With engraved title-page, 14 engraved maps (7 leaves with 2 maps each), and 41 engravings in text. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum, boards with a large blind-tooled centrepiece with the initials H.B.

Muller, America 1887 & 1888; Tiele, Bibl. 7 (noting copies printed on large paper); STCN (5 copies); cf. Sabin 3, note; for Van der Aa: P.G. Hoftijzer, Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733), Leids drukker en boekverkoper (1999). Large paper copy of the second volume of the so-called "folio-edition" of a collection of accounts of the voyages undertaken by the Spaniards to the West Indies and America. The voyages are arranged chronologically, including the glorious voyages and expeditions of the renowned Hernando Cortes to New Spain and Mexico in 1518 and the following years, journeys by land and sea, to the main coast of Chiribichi, the strait of Magellan, Cubagua, Chicora and New Spain in 1520 by Alonso de Ojeda, by Hernando Magallanes through the straits discovered by him, voyages in the West Indies in 1523 and the following years of Francisco de Garay from Jamaica to Panuco, of Pedro de Alvarado from Mexico to Guatemala and of Diego de Godoy from Mexico for the exploration and pacification of various provinces. This volume also includes the daring voyage of Sebastian Cabot with three ships undertaken for the Moluccas, and through much misfortune and ignorance miscarried to the Rio de la Plata. Included in the latter is the voyage of Diego de Garcia, for further discoveries along the coast of America in the year 1526.While all copies seem to be described as "folio" the present copy is in fact a 1mo (full-sheet leaves), except for some title-pages and preliminary matter. Since copies were available on normal paper (80 guilders) and on large paper (100 guilders; Hoftijzer, p. 43), it seems very likely the present set is the large paper issue. With armorial bookplate. Some leaves somewhat browned and an occasional marginal waterstain. In very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed and soiled.

With text printed in gold, title-page printed in gold, red and black with woodcut device, woodcut frontispiece, 6 full-page (3.3 x 1.6 mm!) woodcut illustrations, and headpieces built up from fleurons. The drop-titles of the five chapters and the appendix are printed in red, as is the fleuron used as a tailpiece at the end of each. Contemporary richly gold-tooled black morocco by the so-called first "stadhouderlijke" bindery, gilt edges.

      - Adomeit, Thumb bibles C15; Poortman I, p. 248; for the bindery & tools: Storm van Leeuwen, Haagse boekband, pp. 55-73; Storm van Leeuwen, Dutch decorated dookbinding IIA, pp. 67-101. First edition (deluxe issue, with the text printed in gold) of one of the smallest Bibles of its time. It gives an abbreviated version of the Old and New Testament, followed by an appendix with "Godtvrugtige overdenkingen" (devout contemplations). The frontispiece shows St. Jerome, the next five woodcuts show biblical scenes (one preceding each of the five chapters) and that before the appendix shows a man praying. The present copy is beautifully bound by "the most important bindery working in the eighteenth-century Netherlands", called the stadhouderlijke bindery because of the work it executed for the Dutch heads of state Willem IV and Willem V, Princes of Orange. The centrepiece on the present binding is their lovely three acorn stamp. With the tiny bookplate of the well-known art and book collector Hannah D. Rabinowitz, widow of Louis Mayer Rabinowitz (1887-1957), a notable collector himself. Lacking the opening flyleaf, one quire nearly detached and a tiny smudge in the gutter margin of the last page, otherwise in very good condition. Binding with three tiny wormholes, but otherwise also very good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Shiitake seizo hitoriannai [trans.: Textbook of Cultivating Shiitake Mushrooms]

Eight woodcut illus. in the text. 25 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers, orig. block-printed label on upper cover, new stitching. Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture: Bunseido, 1887. First edition and quite rare. Umebara (1843-1911), was the founding father of agricultural development in the Izu Peninsula in the Shizuoka Prefecture in the early Meiji Period. This book, the earliest on the subject, is concerned with the cultivation of shiitake mushrooms, which, when dried, became an important export crop. Domestic and export demand far exceeded the quantity of mushrooms found naturally so the Japanese began to fell shii-noki and oaks. The backs of these logs were then scarred with a sharp knife, laid on the ground, and remained there for upwards of three years, after which they were stacked in rows in a shady area where they became covered in shiitake mushrooms. The quite handsome woodcuts depict the felled logs, the scarring marks, the process of drying and then soaking the logs in ponds, and then the stacking of the logs, waiting for the spores to develop. The final woodcuts depict the drying processes of the harvested mushrooms (under the sun or placed next to a fire). This is Umebara's first publication. Fine copy.

Contemporary blind-tooled vellum, boards with a large blind-tooled centrepiece with the initials H.B.

      - Muller, America 1887 & 1888; STCN (6 copies with both volumes); Tiele, Bibl. 6 (noting copies printed on large paper), cf. Sabin 3; for Van der Aa: P.G. Hoftijzer, Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733), Leids drukker en boekverkoper (1999). Large paper copy of the so-called "folio-edition" of the Dutch translation of Barros's accounts of 20 Portuguese voyages to the East Indies, Africa, China, the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea and India, with many excellent maps and views. The voyages are arranged chronologically from 1419 (the discovery of Cape Non and Bojador and explorations along the African coast to the Cape of Good Hope and the neighbouring islands) to 1539. It includes Vasco da Gama's first voyage to India in 1497, Niccolo de Conti's voyages through the Islamic World, two different voyages to the East Indies by Pedro Alvarez Cabral in 1500 and Joa da Nova in 1501, voyages to the East Indies by Francisco d'Almeida, Pedro da Nhaya and Tristao da Cunha in 1505-1506, Fernando Perez de Andrade's voyage from Malacca to the Gulf of Bengal and the coast of China in 1516, the extraordinary voyages and noble exploits, by land and sea, of Diego Lopes de Sequeira for the promotion of Portuguese rule and free trade in the East Indies in 1518, and numerous voyages and heroic exploits of Nuno da Cunha from 1528 to his death in 1539.While all copies seem to be described as "folio" the present copy is in fact a 1mo (full-sheet leaves), except for some title-pages and preliminary matter. Since copies were available on normal paper (80 guilders) and on large paper (100 guilders; Hoftijzer, p. 43), it seems very likely the present set is the large paper issue. With bookplates. One of the engravings in the text apparently showed the incorrect image and the corrected one has been pasted over it as a cancel. In very good condition. Bindings slightly rubbed and soiled.

THE OFFICIAL STATE ATLAS OF KANSAS, COMPILED FROM GOVERNMENT SURVEYS; COUNTY RECORDS AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS.

      L. H. Everts & Co., 1887., Philadelphia - First edition. Folio. 18" x 15" x 3" Original calf spine and corners and cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, 339 numbered pages (plus many more unnumbered pages of views), preface, illustrated by hundreds of colored maps and plates in black & white. Twenty-five colored folding maps. A large 30.9 cm. x 70,9 cm. [12 1/4" x 28"] folding map. This is the first large atlas for the state of Kansas. Six Score 83 says "These atlases were designed so that pages could be tipped in. I doubt that any two copies are exactly alike." "This massive compilation contains a vast wealth of information on Kansas at the time of publication. Many of the views depict stock ranches, which are also located on the extremely detailed maps. There are many bird's eye views of towns and sights. Much of the accompanying text is devoted to listing the leading citizens of the state, their property, what kind of livestock they raise, and even what kind of fencing they use. The Everts' atlas is an important source for much information, with illustrations existing nowhere else." Rumsey 2818 says "The views show the remarkable development of the state over two decades after the Civil War." Several pages in the "content" section of pages have small chips (repaired) with minor loss of lettering, also a few minor fore-edge repairs to the margin of a few pages at the rear of the volume, and some light cosmetic restoration to the front and rear leather corners of the covers, the maps and plates are in fine, bright condition, else a very good, tight copy of a beautiful cartographic production. The coloring is bright and this is a tough book to find in even good condition because of its size and weight. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
