        Specimen Days in America

London: Walter Scott, 1887 London: Walter Scott. 1887. Second English edition, first issue. Newly revised by the author, with fresh preface and additional note. The Camelot Series. 12mo. [i-v] vi-x [xi-xii] [13] 14-312 [8]pp. (advertisements at the rear). Publisher's flexible full red leather, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Front joint professionally repaired with some residual wear at both joints and edges, rear free endpaper is detached and chipped at the edges, else very good. Inscribed on the half-title: "To Mr. Whitman of Philadelphia from Walt Whitman, June 1887." An early and interesting copy. Neither BAL or Myerson reference this binding. BAL specifies three primary bindings including red cloth, but red leather is not among them, and this is clearly a publisher's binding. Combined with the early inscription (the book was published in early June), this might be a previous unrecorded author's copy, or author's presentation issue. The fragile nature of the binding might account for it being unrecorded. Myerson A11.2.a1; BAL 21428. .

Gray also wrote light verse, including Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes, a mock elegy concerning Horace Walpole's cat. Containing four engraved plates (collated complete). With Riviere binder's inkstamp to front free-endpaper. Eton College prize copy. Condition: In a full calf armorial binding.         3 Volumes by Daudet

Paris - C. Marpon et E. Flammarion, 1887. Paris - C. Marpon et E. Flammarion, 1887 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Three leatherbound volumes with gilt titles to the spines, marble paper covered boards, and marble paper pastedowns. Tartarin de Tarascon and L'Obstacle are beautifully illustrated throughout. Alphonse Daudet (13 May 1840 16 December 1897) was a French novelist. He was the father of Lon Daudet and Lucien Daudet. Tartarin of Tarascon (French: Tartarin de Tarascon) is an 1872 novel written by the French author Alphonse Daudet. It tells the burlesque adventures of Tartarin, a local hero of Tarascon, a small town in southern France, whose invented adventures and reputation as a swashbuckler finally force him to travel to a very prosaic Algiers in search of lions. Instead of finding a romantic, mysterious Oriental fantasy land, he finds a sordid world suspended between Europe and the Middle East. And worst of all, there are no lions left. An intimate friend of Edmond de Goncourt (who died in his house), of Flaubert, of Zola, Daudet belonged essentially to naturalism. His own experiences, his surroundings, the men with whom he had been brought into contact, various persons who had played a part, more or less public, in Paris life, all passed into his art. But he vivified the material supplied by his memory. His world has the great gift of life. L'Immortel is a bitter attack on the Acadmie franaise, to which august body Daudet never belonged. This book previously belonged to Elizabeth Sherman. She was the youngest child of Charles Taylor Sherman and Eliza Williams. She was also the neice of the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman and Senator John Sherman. Considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Washington of the late 1870s to early 1880s Elizabeth was romantically linked with the American novelist, journalist and historian Henry Adams. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm except for L'Obstacle in which the front inner hinge has failed and is in need of repair. There is some wear to the extremities including slight bumping to the corners, some rubbin to the boards and spines, discolouration to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with a few handling marks and the odd spot. There are bookplates to the front pastedowns. Overall the volumes are in good only condition..

Attractive Unsigned Original Watercolour View of a Lake in the Rocky Mountains].

1887 - [1887]. Watercolour and pencil on paper, heightened in white, ca. 17,5x26 cm (7 x 10 ¼ in). Recently matted. A near fine watercolour. Original watercolour apparently made by Caine during his travel through the Rocky Mountains in the autumn of 1887, but not used as an illustration in his book "A Trip Around the World in 1887-8" (London: Routledge, 1888). W.S. Caine, a British politician and Temperance advocate, travelled around the world with his daughter Hannah in August 1887 - March 1886. He went across the Atlantic Ocean on a steam liner from Liverpool to Quebec, then crossed Canada overland through the Rocky Mountains and British Columbia, went on a steamer from Vancouver to San Francisco and continued his trip to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ceylon and India. Caine's numerous sketches and photographs taken during the journey were used as illustrations to his book, some in the original state, and some being reworked "by my old friend, Mr. John Pedder, of Maidenhead, who has evolved the greater portion of the illustrations, with accuracy and artistic skill" (Caine. A Trip around the World, p. x).

1887 - [1887-8]. Watercolour and ink with touches of gouache on paper, ca. 12x12,5 cm (4 ¾ x 5 in). Captioned in ink in the lower margin. Recently matted. The edge of the lower margin with some part of the caption lost, otherwise a very good watercolour. Original watercolour captioned "The Hermit Range. Selkirk Mountains" and used as the illustration to p. 92. "The Hermit Range, so named from its fancied resemblance to a Monk St. Bernard followed by his dog, is as fine a group of snow mountains as the world can furnish¿ (p. 102). W.S. Caine, a British politician and Temperance advocate, travelled around the world with his daughter Hannah in August 1887 - March 1886.
