Le Théâtre contemporain. Tomes 1, 2 et 3. [Envoi autographe signé à Madame Charles Hayem]

Paris: L. Frinzine, 1887. Livre. Très bon. Demi-reliure à coins. Dédicacé par l'auteur. Ed. originale. In-12. (VICAIRE, I, 307).

        ST. GEORGE FOR ENGLAND

1887. With Eight Full-Page Illustrations by Gordon Browne. New York: Scribner and Welford, n.d. 24 pp undated ads. Original pictorial terra-cotta cloth, beveled. First American Edition, actually published and bound in England by Blackie -- one of only 185 copies. This is a boys' tale sited amidst the campaign against the Spanish Armada during the 1330s. In 1886 Blackie sent over some copies of two Henty titles, with "Scribner and Welford" title pages post-dated 1887. Then in 1887, Blackie sent over (undated) copies of the seventeen other Henty titles they had published in England, including this one, in very small numbers (250 or fewer copies for thirteen of the seventeen) -- making these 1887 Scribner & Welford titles among the scarcest of Henty books. Five of the titles, again including this one, have the smallest number of copies -- a mere 185.~This copy has the "1887-B" ad catalogue, with a seven-line description for THE SEVEN WISE SCHOLARS (no priority established). Condition is very good (the volume is expertly rebacked, preserving the entire binding and original endpapers; the volume shows little wear or soil). Eastman pp 5-7. This is an extremely scarce Henty edition: for each of the 1887 titles, Eastman notes how many copies he located in the major personal and institutional Henty collections; this is one of just two titles for which there was "no copy reported"; today there are perhaps three known copies.

Muller about UNESCO statement and how other important scientists wish the statement to read. Half of the letter is related to some science disagreement with a third party. A rather large archive that will need further study.         Thebes. The Hall of Columns in the Great Temple of Karnak, (Restored.)

American Polytechnic Company Buffalo, NY: American Polytechnic Company, 1887. Limited. Color lithograph. Image measures 18 1/4" x 11 3/4". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XLVII. This beautifully printed color lithograph presents an imagined view of the Temple of Karnak restored to its original beauty. Published in 1887, the print offers a view down a colonnade of elaborately decorated pillars through a sunlit courtyard and out into the bright blue sky. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, which is considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This print is in very good condition, with some edge wear foxing along the outside margins not affecting the image. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.

The Heroes of the Victoria Cross. Twelve Reliefs Portraying the Various Deeds and Daring Valour Performed by Britain's Soldiers From the Crimean War To the Present Day In Commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria

London: Kensington Fine Art Association, 1887. First Edition. Leporello, wraps. Very Good. A very unusual, and scarce, double leporello, with two accordian style chromolithographed paper cut extensions, each with six panels! Only one copy of the original located on OCLC (at the University of Delaware), with two libraries holding a 1975 reprint and one, a digital version. Light soiling covering the wraps. One panel, the far end of the top panel, with an oblong sight detached partially from below (meaning a few tiny tears to slender pieces). There appears to have been paper/card columns that attached the two leporellos together. These thin pieces remain, but they all have splits so the two leporellos are extended separately, and it is now impossible to have the extended leporellos standing upright (although this was probably never a wise manner of displaying the imagery. Otherwise, a few minor crease marks to the reed-thin detailing, but no losses apparent to the imagery. Given the fragility, delicacy and fineness of the cut-out edges, the panels are in a miraculous state of preservation!

Oeuvre originale

A very good copy, attractive withal. First English edition.         Nord Contre Sud

Paris: J. Hetzel, 1887 Paris: J. Hetzel, 1887. First Edition (not, however, in Cartonnage Type aux Deux Elephants, but in a textured cloth binding instead). 85 engravings by L. Benett. Quarto (11" x 7.5"), red pebbled cloth with gilt spine designs and titling. All Edges Gilt, silk texture endpapers. Some dampstains on both covers, corners bumped a bit, spine shows one nick and trace scuffing, previous owner's markings on ffep. This copy is otherwise in remarkable condition, with bright gilt, strong hinges and a clean textblock with only faint age toning at page edges. With the stained covers, however, just about VG. Covers are plain red with stamped panel border lines only, the first edition apparently being prior to Hetzel's more elaborate cloth "cartonnages", at least for this title. A very scarce Verne true [French] first edition, Nord Contre Sud (North Against South) was written during a time in which Verne departed from science fiction in favor of adventure after the dime-novel spirit of the time. Later known variously in the U.S. as North Against South, Texar's Revenge, Texar the Southerner, and (in two parts) Burbank the Northerner and Texar the Southerner, it was a tale of individual Civil War conflict, but was of scant historical accuracy, and not highly thought of in its English form by U.S. reviewers. Still a scarce and interesting Verne true first, stately and loaded with Louis Benett's famous illustrations. L-29

Contemporary ownership signature to front wrapper of all parts, else internally clean with illustrations throughout. Front wrappers printed with title and illustration of a native family; rear wrappers with advertisement to subscribe to the book. Title page and index found in 4th part. A fantastic, completely unsophisticated copy in original parts of this scarce title. With an appendix of a short dictionary of Eskimos languages of Greenland, North Alaska and South Alaska. Arctic Biblio. 7956. Tourville 2315. Smith 5093. The Norwegian-language account of Jacobsen's expedition to the Northwest United States, British Columbia and Alaska to collect ethnographic specimens from the Indian and Inuit groups he encountered. Many of the items Jacobsen collected formed the core of the Field Museum ethnology collection.         The Royal Lineage of our Noble and Gentle Families Together with Their Paternal Ancestry Traced from the Blood Royal of England (3 volumes)

London: Hatchards, 1887. Hardback. Very Good/No Jacket. 7158 4to. Volumes 1 (paginated 1 to 448) and 2 (paginated 448 to 865) are uniform, all edges gilt, dark blue bevelled boards, gilt decoration and titles. Volume 3 (paginated 848 to 978) has plain edges and the boards are of a darker blue, although with the same gilt motif and titles to the front board. Volume 3 is evidently from a later edition: it includes a letter from D. Saumarez (Saumarez Hall, Guernsey) to "Freda", dated January 12th (18)94, about the proof page of the family's entry in the volume, and a telegram dated January 24 (18)95 to "Lady Loraine". Lady de Saumarez and Lady Loraine are the last two whose pedigree appears in this last volume. Condition notes: The boards of all three volumes are somewhat knocked and rubbed, with a spot of bleaching or staining to the front of Volume I. Internally, all three volumes are in excellent condition. The binding is tight and sound.

        THE CLIPPER OF THE CLOUDS

1887. Illustrated. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1887. 32 pp ads dated Oct 1886. Original light blue cloth pictorially decorated in brown, black and white, all edges gilt. First British Edition of this tale that follows the adventures of the "Albatross," an aerial machine that resembles a clipper ship more than an airplane. ~Strange events are occurring around the world, involving lights, sounds and flags that are hung in seemingly-impossible-to-get-to locations. At the meeting of the Weldon Institute in Philadelphia PA, Uncle Prudent (President) and Phil Evans (Secretary) and the membership debate about whether their balloon the Goahead should have its directional screw located at the front or the back. A man called Robur interrupts and takes over their meeting; he insists that to master the skies, a flying vehicle must be heavier than air. His remarks infuriate the balloonists and after their meeting, Uncle Prudent and Phil Evans are kidnapped and taken on an around-the-world trip in the Albatross, Robur's heavier-than-air "Clipper of the Clouds." [Kytasaari] ~George Munro was first to publish this book in English (as ROBUR THE CONQUEROR), in his cheaply and quickly-produced wrappered "Seaside Library" in June 1887; this fully-illustrated Sampson Low edition was next, in November of that year (this copy has ads from a full year earlier, but it must have been a case of the binder using up old ad catalogues). The front cover shows the Albatross "demonstrating extraordinary maneuverability as it is navigated through a narrow gap in the Rocky Mountains" [T&M].~This is a bright, near-fine copy, very slightly rubbed at the extremities but with very little other wear -- quite uncommon today in this condition. This is one of Verne's best and most sought-after tales -- published sixteen years before the Wright Brothers' historic flight. Taves & Michaluk V030; Myers 12. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.

        Cyprus

London, 1887. Lithograph, 47 x 62 cms, original colour, blank verso; from the first trade edition of Stanford’s London Atlas. Edward Stanford (senior) acquired Arrowmsith's stock in 1874. His own version of the London Atlas, published in Jubilee year and dedicated to Queen Victoria, is considered to be his last significant work before his retirement. Later editions were revised in keeping with the latest information. Cyprus was ceded to Britain at the Congress of Berlin in 1878, following the Great Eastern Crisis. In three centuries or so of Ottoman rule only limited new surveying work had been undertaken; one of the first British acts was to appoint a young Lieutenant H.H. Kitchener to create a full triangulated survey, a task he completed in 1883. Stanford’s map draws heavily on this, the first modern survey of the island.

The Spanish playwright Enrique Gaspar published "El Anacronópete" eight years before Wells influential work appeared. The novel begins at the 1878 Paris Exposition, where Dr. Don Sindulfo unveils his new invention, which looks like a giant sailing vessel. Soon the doctor embarks on a voyage back in time, accompanied by a motley crew of French prostitutes and Spanish soldiers. The purpose of his expedition is to track down the imprisoned wife of a third century Chinese emperor, believed to possess the secret to immortality. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE

1887. With Eight Full-Page Illustrations by H. M. Paget. New York: Scribner and Welford, n.d. 24 pp undated ads. Original pictorial green-grey cloth, beveled. First American Edition, actually published and bound in England by Blackie -- one of only 185 copies. This is a boys' tale sited amidst the War of Spanish Succession. Five of the titles, again including this one, have the smallest number of copies -- a mere 185.~This copy has the "1887-A" ad catalogue, with a twelve-line description for THE SEVEN WISE SCHOLARS (no priority established). Condition is near-fine, with minor rubbing at the extremities. Eastman pp 5-7.
