Manuscript. Beautiful lyric and a great Mother's Day gift. Quatrain from an unspecified poem on a 7- 1/2" x 5" sheet of paper SIGNED by Howe and dated 15 January 1887: "Then spake the Angel of Mothers/To me, in gentle tone:/'Be kind to the children of others,/And thus deserve thine own.'" Howe, active in the women's suffrage movement, is perhaps best known as the author of another poem, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic, written at night near the beleaguered capital of Washington at the beginning of the Civil War. It earned her the grand total of $5 upon its publication in THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY along with the added bonus of instant and lasting fame. Later she became president of the New England Woman Suffrage Association as well as the Association of the Advancement of Women. Howe was honored as the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1908, two years before her death at 91. In 1870 Howe was the first to proclaim Mother's Day with her Mother's Day Proclamation, a call for women to join in support of disarmament and a product of her feminist belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level. This quotation beautifully expresses the sentiment of appreciation for this most noble and lifelong occupation.

"Pickwick was issued when Dickens? name was just beginning to excite the attention of prescient publishers and be recognized by readers in search of entertaining novels . The publication of PICKWICK, which ran through twenty numbers, made for all time an English classic--a book representative of its age, exhibiting the life and the ideals of an important class of English folk, on the threshold of the Victorian era. "Now, over a century and a half later, PICKWICK holds its assured place in the literature of our tongue, and, among all its author?s works, seems to have the best chance of achieving what is known as immortality. The book was an improvisation. Dickens was led by his genius and by the indulgence of his jocose fancy into picturing all the popular life which his varied experience in and out of London had made familiar to him. And it is a book that appeals throughout life--to the child and to the person of late years" (Gissing). Like others of Dickens? creations, it is a masterpiece. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

1887. Very Good. [EHON] Shunsodo, publisher. TOJUN KAGETSU-CHO. 3 Vols., orihon, bound in brocade covered boards with printed silk title labels. The tall slender volumes, 29 x 10.2 cm, are reminiscent of sutras in their format. Enclosed in the original chitsu (clasps missing) with printed paper title label. The colophon is integrated with the closing directory of participants, dated Meiji 16 [1883]. The zodiacal date of 1827 is contained in many of the contributions to the work. Why almost sixty years went by until this work was published in woodcut is problematical, but the centrality of the great scholar, Rai Sanyo, and his followers to the work is undeniable. There are a total of twelve woodcut printed illustrations, some with light coloration, 11 are double page and one is a four page foldout landscape. The subjects are the flowers, landscapes, etc. of Nanga art, but the execution is superlative in printing, coloring and composition. As remarkable as the prints are, the other aspect of the albums, the calligraphed poems, etc., are equally impressive. In my opinion, the printer's ability to capture the diverse style of each writer and the uniformly excellent quality of each contributor's work make this A FEW BRIEF MOMENTS INSCRIBING MOON AND FLOWERS one of the finest illustrated works of the Meiji period. It would not do to ignore the historical importance of the work, either. The Nanga revival of the 1880's which iterated an earlier flowering approximately a zodiacal circle earlier is at the heart of the work, and the lavish nature of the production illustrates the intellectual, artistic and financial resources available to the bunjin literati of mid-Meiji Japan. Each poem and woodcut is sealed, and the study of both seals and signatures throughout the book provided in its day and to us also many insights into the relations of the many intellectuals in Rai Sanyo's 1820's movement. See Mitchell 528 and articles on such of the contributors as Sanyo himself, Kagawa Kageki, Rai Kyohei and Kan Sazan in the Kodansha ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAPAN. In very good condition and excellent color and impression. Three volumes, complete:

1887. Very Good. (EHON) KAWANABE Kyo^sai [Gyo^sai] GYO^SAI GADAN. Tokyo: Iwamoto Shun, Meiji 20 [1887]. 25.4 x 17.6 cm. 4 volumes, string-bound Japanese-style in printed covers with paper labels. All in a folding clasped chitsu box with a colorful woodblock printed label. Printed in sumi and light colors throughout. This famous artist's autobiography and copybook provides a remarkable insight into the world of the traditional arts in mid-Meiji Japan by their foremost practitioner. Though this work is not uncommon, the impressions in this copy are very good (Conder's heron has most of its fine detail). There is splitting and crude repair of the box hinges but the book itself is a very good copy. Almost certainly from the library of Arthur Wesley Dow, with his library label and number. As issued:

A fine copy. ---- Dibner Heralds of Science 71; See PMM 377; Norman 1060. - FIRST EDITION of Hertz's first paper on electromagnetic waves, with the second journal publication of his second paper. "When Hertz entered physics in the 1870's, electrodynamics was in a disorganized state. Theories had multiplied in its fifty years of development, and each had its own following. To encourage. the experimental decision between electrodynamic theories Helmholtz proposed through the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1879 a second prize problem, this one in connection with the behavior of unclosed Circuits in Maxwell's theory. Although at the time Hertz declined to try the Berlin Academy problem. he kept the problem constantly in mind; and in 1886 shortly after arriving in Karisruhe he found that the Riess or Knochenhauer induction coils he was using in lecture demonstrations were precisely the means he needed for undertaking Helmholtz' test of Maxwell's theory. By the end of 1888 he had gone beyond the terms of Helniholtz' problem and had confinned the existence of electromagnetic waves in air. He published a total of nine papers from his electrical researches in Karlsruhe. They drew immediate, widespread recognition." (DSB). -- In his first paper Hertz described the apparatus that he had devised for the detection and measurement of electromagnetic waves, the key to his later successes. To prove that electrical waves can be projected though space it was necessary to devise a means of both producing the waves and, more difficult at the time, of detecting them once produced. For this Hertz used "an effect as old as the discovery of electricity itself-the electric spark. By inducing the waves to produce an electric spark at a distance, with no apparent connexion between the oscillator and the spark gap, and by moving the sparking apparatus so that the length of the spark varied, he proved beyond question the passage of electric waves through space" (PMIVI). "Hertz's proof was the result of his experimental inventiveness. He regarded his detection device as his most original stroke, since no amount of theory would have predicted that it would work" (DSB). In his paper on ultraviolet light Hertz showed that UV light is alone responsible for the photoelectric effect, an effect which he foresaw as having "profound theoretical meaning for the connection of light and electricity" (op.cit.). The volume also includes papers by Max Planck, W C. Rontgen, R. Bunsen, and others. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Le Théâtre contemporain. Tomes 1, 2 et 3. [Envoi autographe signé à Madame Charles Hayem]

Paris: L. Frinzine, 1887. Livre. Très bon. Demi-reliure à coins. Dédicacé par l'auteur. Ed. originale. In-12. (VICAIRE, I, 307).

1887. With Eight Full-Page Illustrations by Gordon Browne. New York: Scribner and Welford, n.d. 24 pp undated ads. Original pictorial terra-cotta cloth, beveled. First American Edition, actually published and bound in England by Blackie -- one of only 185 copies. This is a boys' tale sited amidst the campaign against the Spanish Armada during the 1330s. In 1886 Blackie sent over some copies of two Henty titles, with "Scribner and Welford" title pages post-dated 1887. Then in 1887, Blackie sent over (undated) copies of the seventeen other Henty titles they had published in England, including this one, in very small numbers (250 or fewer copies for thirteen of the seventeen) -- making these 1887 Scribner & Welford titles among the scarcest of Henty books. Five of the titles, again including this one, have the smallest number of copies -- a mere 185.~This copy has the "1887-B" ad catalogue, with a seven-line description for THE SEVEN WISE SCHOLARS (no priority established). Condition is very good (the volume is expertly rebacked, preserving the entire binding and original endpapers; the volume shows little wear or soil). Eastman pp 5-7. This is an extremely scarce Henty edition: for each of the 1887 titles, Eastman notes how many copies he located in the major personal and institutional Henty collections; this is one of just two titles for which there was "no copy reported"; today there are perhaps three known copies.

Thebes. The Hall of Columns in the Great Temple of Karnak, (Restored.)

American Polytechnic Company Buffalo, NY: American Polytechnic Company, 1887. Limited. Color lithograph. Image measures 18 1/4" x 11 3/4". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XLVII. This beautifully printed color lithograph presents an imagined view of the Temple of Karnak restored to its original beauty. Published in 1887, the print offers a view down a colonnade of elaborately decorated pillars through a sunlit courtyard and out into the bright blue sky. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, which is considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This print is in very good condition, with some edge wear foxing along the outside margins not affecting the image. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.
