        New Meiji Map of Tokyo

Koshodo. Koshodo. Pocket map. Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 28.6" x 20.7". This colorful tourist map of Tokyo and Yokohama is a highly detailed document of the city and its environs in the Meiji period. The city is shown divided into districts, and roads, rivers, and railroads are all labeled. Important buildings are colored in red, including the Imperial Palace at the map's center. The map is surrounded by 39 vignettes illustrating these significant buildings and other places around the city. Municipalities within the city proper are labeled, and rice farms can be seen in the rural districts, also labeled, outside the main city. The map has a substantial index, including police stations, ship soundings, monasteries, temples, and shrines. It also includes an inset map of the city of Yokohama and numerous information tables. The map is labeled with the publication date of February 3, 1887. It is in very good condition with original orange paper boards still attached, if slightly worn. Narrow margins as issued with some wear to edges, but overall bright color and no foxing or staining. Like many Japanese maps from the Meiji period, this map incorporates western cartographic elements, such as the large compass rose, into the traditional Japanese cartographic style. The map's intention for tourist use speaks to the gradual modernization that occurred in Japan during this era.

        A Travers Paris

Paris: Librairie Plon. Paris: Librairie Plon. First Edition. Decorated Cloth. Very Good Plus. N.d., 1887. Oblong, 23 by 27 cm. 48 pp. A tour of the streets of Paris and the various contretemps encountered, most involving in some way horses, whether working or sporting horses. Thus we encounter the collision of horses with modern technology, from bicycles to electrified trams. The humor is somewhat dry and ironic. While one here can enjoy a glimpse of the pre-automobile city, there is enough that is recognization in the various accidents, activities, pretensions, and confusion that one might nod in recognition of many of Crafty's remarks. Binding is near mint in terms of the brightness of the cloth and imagery. Light foxing in early leaves, then only occasionally. Most leaves are clean. Tiny pinprick hole on FFEP where there is the remnants of a seller's small price tag.

        War and Peace

London: Vizetelly & Co, 1887. London: Vizetelly & Co, 1887. First English language edition. First English translation, preceding the American translation by Clara Bell published by Gottsberger. This copy mixed, with books one and two first printings and the third book a second printing (stated "Second Edition" on title page). Bound in the original publisher's green cloth stamped in blue and red. The first book recased, book two with the hinges repaired and the third book untouched. All three volumes in uniform condition and with the bookplate of Alethea Rianette Anne Blackett (née? Scott) and an ornithological bookplate initialled SC on front endpapers of each vol. Spines darkened and the titling a bit obscure, but complete and in relatively good order for such a rare thing. Conservatively estimated 10-20 times as rare as the American edition, only this copy found in the auction record, no matter how far back you look. And, our way to apologize for the condition and the mixed issue is to price this the same as the American edition and let someone have the true first for no premium.& & The author';s epic novel of the Napoleonic Wars, given a human face through the poignant impact it has on several interrelated characters. A story of love and tradition amidst a crumbling society and a radically changing world. A novel brimming with enlightenment and modern theories. Virginia Woolf wrote: "There remains the greatest of all novelists—for what else can we call the author of War and Peace? . . . Even in a translation we feel that we have been set on a mountain-top and had a telescope put into our hands. Everything is astonishingly clear and absolutely sharp." Undoubtedly a masterpiece of world literature, and in our opinion, the greatest work from the Russian literary canon.

White cockades: an incident of the "Forty-five

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1887. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1887. Hardcover. 216p., backlist, frontis-piece, first edition (date on title page and copyright page match, no notice of later printings), lightly-penciled gift inscription and ownership signature on first free endpaper and lightly-shelfworn pictorial olive cloth printed in red, white and gilt, some rubbing and wear to top edgestain. A very good example of this young adult novel of the 1745 Jacobite uprising in Scotland. James J. Gifford has called Stevenson "The man who might well be styled the first modern American gay author." Born in New Jersey, he wrote boys' adventure novels in the style of Horatio Algier before penning two overtly homosexual books under the pen name Xavier Mayne: "Imre: a Memorandum" in 1906 and "The Intersexes" in 1908. In "The Intersexes," he notes that "White Cockades" contained a "half hinted" erotic relationship between Bonnie Prince Charlie and a rural youth. By his own description, thus, "White Cockades" is the first homoerotically themed novel by this foundational figure in American gay fiction. Young 3640

        OUR HUNDRED DAYS IN EUROPE

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1887.. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1887.. Gray green pictorial cloth, t.e.g. (BAL's binding A). Binding a bit darkened at spine, a few rubs and nicks at edges, but a good, sound copy. First U.S. edition (the British edition preceded). From the library of the eminent literary agent, A.P. Watt, with his bookplate. An inscribed presentation copy: "Mr. A.P. Watt With the kind remembrance of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Boston, Nov. 5th 1887." The inscription postdates that in the copy Holmes inscribed to his son by five days. In the passage in the text (p.242) relating to Holmes' befuddled confusion of 'Watt' with 'Watts' while in London, the initials 'A.P.' have been inserted in pencil in an unknown hand to make the distinction plain. Alexander P. Watt (d. 1914); English literary agent; founded the agency, A.P. Watt & Son, in 1885. Holmes first visited England during his years as a medical student in Paris (1833-35). Fifty years later he returned as an esteemed literary figure, to receive honorary doctorates from both Cambridge and Oxford. The friendly chorus that greeted him during his 1886 English tour included Edmund Gosse, who wrote in a letter to Richard Watson Gilder on 18 June 1886: "I have just come from the breakfast given to Dr. O.W. Holmes at St. John's College. The dear little man, in his scarlet doctor's gown, with flying pink ribbands, looked beaming, and made a delicious speech which nobody took down. He said that what he had enjoyed most in England was the sense of antiquity over all things, 'like the lichen on an old wall, or, better still, like the patina on an old coin'. He has had a triumph over here, and his heart rejoices, as one can see." Holmes' own impressions of this "happy summer" abroad, are recorded in OUR HUNDRED DAYS IN EUROPE (1887).         An Archive of Material Relating to Boynton?s Bicycle Railway

1887-1895. This railway, tested experimentally on a short track at Coney Island, was based on a light, narrow-gauge design with tracks under and above the locomotive, closer in concept to a monorail than a traditional railroad. Minor creasing and wear; excellent condition.
