Stadthaus. Kolorierte Autographie von Wilhelm Heuer.

1887.. 19,7 x 30 cm. Salamon 11. AUT 69. [Autograph Letter, Signed ("SL Clemens"), to Richard Watson Gilder]

Hartford. 31 "Janiwary [sic]" 1887. Two pages, in ink, on two panels of folded quarto lettersheet. Folded for mailing, a few smudges, otherwise very good. To "My Dear Gilder," in the recipient's role as editor of CENTURY MAGAZINE: "Do you want a powerful readable short article (about 5,000 words at a rough guess?) And will you pay a higher rate than of yore (for reasons explainable when I see you) if you accept it? And will you crowd it into the March No.? If there's any hurry ... use the telegraph - because I want to take a day, or maybe two, to knock out adjectives & polish up ...." Signed: "Yr sincerely SL Clemens [flourish]." A four line postscript follows: "Praps [sic] I don't want it in next number - I can't quite tell, yet. But am tolerably sure I do." The article in question was, most likely, "English as She is Taught," which appeared in the April issue of CENTURY MAGAZINE.

        La photographie astronomique. Presentation copy

      Paris, 1887. Paris, 1887.
Mouchez, Ernest (1821-92). La photographie astronomique a l'Observatoire de Paris et la carte du ciel. Extracted in part from the Bureau des Longitudes' Annuaire pour l'an 1887. 8vo. 107, [1]pp. 7 plates, including 4 with original photographs tipped to mounts, each with printed tissue guard. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1887. 188 x 121 mm. Marbled boards c. 1887. Paper evenly toned, some light foxing in the plate leaves, otherwise very good.

Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf: "A Monsieur Moru, procurer general a , Souvenir bien affectueux, E. Mouchez."

First Edition. In 1880, with the appearance of gelatin-silver bromide plates, "whole programs of astronomical photography were launched, with real scientific vigor and on a scale appropriate to the potential of the photographic medium. Heavenly bodies-stars, galaxies-are visible only by virtue of their emission of light, which can be faithfully recorded on a photographic plate, beyond even the capacity of the human eye. . . . From that moment the 'known' universe was no longer defined by limits of human vision, and, since light is only a small part of the totality of electromagnetic radiation, these limits were pushed further and further back as different wavelengths of light were discovered" (Frizel, p. 278). In 1884 Paul and Prosper Henry, astronomers at the Paris Observatory, adopted photography as a means of augmenting their ability to record stars of the third degree, which give off very little light. They had a special lens made for the purpose, which they used in conjunction with equatorial and refracting telescopes, the movements of which exactly compensate for the earth's rotation in order to prevent any blurring or deformation of the star image during the necessarily long exposure times. In 1887 Rear-Admiral Ernest Mouchez, an astronomer and cartographer, launched a plan to compile a photographic map of the sky, enlisting the help of over a dozen observatories using the Henry's photographic telescope. The present work describes this plan; it includes four striking original photographs of the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and the Hercules Cluster. Mouchez, who became director of the Paris Observatory in 1888, expected that a complete photographic star map would be produced by 1891; however, the project still remains incomplete and may never be realized. Frizel, ed., A New History of Photography, pp. 278-79; illustrating one of the plates from this book on p. 273.

        New Meiji Map of Tokyo

Koshodo. Koshodo. Pocket map. Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 28.6" x 20.7". This colorful tourist map of Tokyo and Yokohama is a highly detailed document of the city and its environs in the Meiji period. The city is shown divided into districts, and roads, rivers, and railroads are all labeled. Important buildings are colored in red, including the Imperial Palace at the map's center. The map is surrounded by 39 vignettes illustrating these significant buildings and other places around the city. Municipalities within the city proper are labeled, and rice farms can be seen in the rural districts, also labeled, outside the main city. The map has a substantial index, including police stations, ship soundings, monasteries, temples, and shrines. It also includes an inset map of the city of Yokohama and numerous information tables. The map is labeled with the publication date of February 3, 1887. It is in very good condition with original orange paper boards still attached, if slightly worn. Narrow margins as issued with some wear to edges, but overall bright color and no foxing or staining. Like many Japanese maps from the Meiji period, this map incorporates western cartographic elements, such as the large compass rose, into the traditional Japanese cartographic style. The map's intention for tourist use speaks to the gradual modernization that occurred in Japan during this era.
