THE BAR-TENDER';S GUIDE OR HOW TO MIX ALL KINDS OF PLAIN AND FANCY DRINKS

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald Publishers, 1887. New and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. First published in 1862, Jerry Thomas's Bar-Tender's Guide (sometimes known as The Bon-Vivant's Companion) is the seminal work on cocktails, and the first drinks book published in the United States. Thomas codified the oral tradition of recipes from the earliest days of cocktails, laying down principles for concocting mixed drinks of all categories. Thomas Guide was updated several times to include new drinks. All of the editions contain the recipe for his Blue Blazer, his signature drink -- not for the novice, it involves setting whiskey ablaze and passing it between two glasses, making a continuous arc of flame [see p. 51 -- he suggests practicing for a time with cold water!]. 130 + [14] ad pp. In publisher's cloth which has been rebacked with the original spine with titling laid down. Very Good binding.

Photographic Illustrations, with a Description of Mandalay & Upper Burmah Expeditionary Force, 1886-87

Birmingham: A Pumphrey, Photographic Publisher,, 1887. By a Cavalry Officer. Quarto (287 × 214 mm) Later red half morocco, old marbled boards, black morocco label. Title page printed in red and black, lithographic plan of Mandalay, and 59 albumen prints (100 × 133 mm) mounted on thin card leaves, rectos only, within red ruled borders, with accompanying letter-press text. A little rubbed, boards slightly soiled, light browning throughout, the mounting leaves slightly rippled and with some marginal soot-streaking - see below - the majority of the prints remain strong, a few a little faded, and one somewhat spotted, overall very good. First and only edition. Extremely uncommon photographic record of the Third Anglo-Burmese War, COPAC locates BL and SOAS only, OCLC adds just 8 further copies worldwide. A printed slip from the publishers, tipped in after the second blank, explains that on 8 December 1887 their premises have been subject to "a serious fire … the contents have suffered very considerably", which almost certainly explains the scarcity of the book, and also the sooting at the page edges. Newspaper clipping relating the story mounted on the third blank. The war was the last of three between the Burmese and the British fought during the nineteenth century. Following the Second Anglo-Burmese War, Lower Burma had been annexed to Britain, the Konbaung Dynast retaining sovereignty only of the territories described as Upper Burma. At the conclusion of the third war, Burma was formally annexed to Britain, becoming a province of India. Graham explains that he had originally intended his photographs for his "own satisfaction", but "later on, when I found so many of my friends were anxious to secure copies, which I had not the time to print, it struck me that they would probably be glad to obtain a Series, as a memento of Burmah, if I could get them done at a moderate price" ("preface"). The pictures "are necessarily small, as they were taken by apparatus capable of being carried by an Officer in the field, the negatives being on Eastman's paper". An interesting selection of images; views in and around Mandalay - the Palace, Merchant Street, Kyaung on Mandalay Hill, the Cemetery - together with a series of locations on the Irrawaddy including one of an Irrawaddy Flotilla Company steamer and flats; local "types" - Wayside Food Sellers, A Bishop and Priests, Burmese Dacoits, Silk Sellers in the King's Bazaar; and group portraits of the Army and British officials - Sir Charles Bernard, Sir George White, Brig.-General East and Sir Charles Arbuthnot and their respective staffs, several of Graham's regiment, a trooper of the Bengal Cavalry, Chestnut Troop, Bengal 7th, the Medical Staff, Indian Ambulance Corps, "Guns coming into action". Col. Graham (1838-1918) was born in Agra, the son of Colonel Joseph Graham, 50th. Bengal Infantry. He joined the 7th Bengal Cavalry in May 1856, and saw action with them in the Indian Mutiny, "defence of the Kumaon Hills and Rohilcund against the rebels in 1857-58 … action at Cherpoora and other minor affairs" (Hart's Army List); and in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, 1880, lines of communication on the Khyber, both of which campaigns he received the medal for. In Burma he was mentioned in despatches, and received the medal and clasp. Contemporary ownership inscription of H.H. Day, together with his bookplate, later bookplate of noted military bibliophile Mark Dineley.

Kando Koron / Teachings of Buddhism / 1887 Woodblock Printed Zen Guide

1887 (no place / no publisher): 1887, Kando Koron. Subtly patterned wraps, 26 pp., woodblock printed on soft, fibrous, flexible paper, likely a form rice paper. In Japanese throughout, of course. Very Good; one stain and bit of sporadic soil on cover (see scans), covers have stood the test of time quite sturdily. Contents are Fine. Contains Zen Buddhist teachings; "Kando" roughly translates as a feeling or sensation of profound excitement and gratification derived from experiencing supreme quality and performance. "Koron" may be a proper name in this context. Vintage, quaint and a bit mystical in aspect. L30n

Our National Game

[New York:]: Liebenroth von Auw, 1887. Six Chromolithographs. 1 vols. Large 4to. Original publisher's cream colored cloth with gilt and black stamping. Spine shows moderate wear. The pictorial title page depicts a standing baseball team surrounding a seated coach, surmounted by patriotic motifs and above a design of crossed bats and equipment. The other illustrations are skillfully rendered field level scenes of a Wild Pitch, Fly Ball, Foul Ball, a runner Caught between Bases, and Home Run -- each with extremely interesting details of uniforms, equipment, positions, etc. A rare, early, large format "coffee-table" book on the sport, which, by this time, had already become the "national game". Interestingly, the publisher of this rarity, Liebenroth & Von Auw, was a New York firm which specialized in German-language publications targeting the immigrant community: schoolbooks, handwriting manuals, and notably, a hymnal for the Dutch-Reformed Lutheran Church. The latest of their publications recorded in OCLC is 1886 - but there is no recorded copy in any American library of this important pictorial record of baseball as it was played in the 1880's.

Fine Photograph of "Lone Star Geyser".

[1887]. 1887 - Fine albumen print, mounted on archival matt (8 x 5 inches; 14 x 11 inches), of Lone Star Geyser, number 43 pencilled lower left-hand corner. Provenance: from the library of William E. Hofman, his sale Christie's 3rd December, 2010, lot 343 A magnificent view of the celebrated geyser "Lone Star" in Yellowstone National Park by the park's official photographer Frank Jay Haynes. Old Faithful was named by the first official expedition to Yellowstone, the Washburn Expedition of 1870. They were impressed by its size and frequency. Old Faithful erupts every 35 to 120 minutes for 1 1/2 to 5 minutes. Its maximum height ranges from 90 to 184 feet. Yellowstone, was the world's first national park, and "is situated mainly in Wyoming and extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established in 1872 by Congress, primarily because of its geysers, but also because of its remarkable assemblage of wildlife and unusual natural features. The "national park idea" pioneered at Yellowstone eventually spread worldwide. In the United States, Mackinac Island National Park (now a Michigan state park) was established in 1875 and Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks in 1890. (Yosemite had been a California state park since 1864.) Yellowstone remains the "mother park" in the U.S. national park system, which by the 1990s included 376 sites. The celebrated photographer Haynes was first hired as the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad and "given his own travelling studio in a converted rail car, Haynesproduced numerous famous images of the railroad's construction projects and of sites along its route. He held that position for nearly three decades. He also was appointed in 1884 as Yellowston's official photographer and sold materials from a store in the park itself. He retired in 1916. His images of Yellowstone are among his more important and dramatic imagery" (see Dorothy Sloan, Western Americana,10/18/2006, lot 254). "Boasting about three-quarters of the world's geysers (of which Old Faithful is the most famous) and over half of the thermal features, it also has one of the globe's most spectacular canyons, one of North America's most celebrated waterfalls, and more than 225 permanent waterfalls higher than fifteen feet. It has the premier wildlife sanctuary (and the top three trout-fishing streams) in the continental United States. Unmatched in the variety and number of its megafauna, the park shelters the world's largest concentration of elk and is one of the last remaining strongholds of the grizzly bear in the coterminous states. It is the only site in the United States (and one of only two in the world) where a wild bison herd has survived continuously since ancient times. At the center of the largest relatively intact ecosystem in the North Temperate Zone, its hundreds of lakes, creeks, mountains, and valleys survive in essentially pristine condition. As in all major parks, Yellowstone's administrators debate the appropriate forms of intervention to protect this delicate ecosystem and strive to balance the competing claims of public access and wilderness preservation" (see Aubrey L. Haines, The Yellowstone Story, 1996; James Pritchard, Preserving Yellowstone's Natural Conditions: Science and the Perception of Nature, 1999).         The Life Saving Appliances of Joseph Francis

No place: Printed for Private Distribution,, 1887. Action of Congress of the United States in Recognition of his Services, March, 1887. Quarto. Original plum cloth, title gilt to the spine and upper board, gilt block of Francis's Patent Metallic Life Car to the lower board, bright pink endpapers. Double frontispiece and 17 other plates, one of them double-page. The cloth a little rubbed and stained, light toning, otherwise very good. First edition. Uncommon, OCLC records just 4 copies - US Coast Guard Academy, Smithsonian, NYPL, and Texas Tech. Francis's name was extremely well-known in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, but his fame waned with the frequency of maritime disasters. He devoted his life to the invention of maritime life-saving devices, his most famous being the matallic life car. "In early manhood he was employed by the Government to build lifeboats for its war vessels. He was the first man to use iron for life boats, but when he built his first metallic life car he failed to get any aid from the Government, and so, at his own expense, he established his works on the Jersey coast near Long Branch. His inventive genius ripened as he grew older and he built many lifeboats, rafts, lifecars &c. which were eventually in general use in European countries long before they were adopted in the United States. Congress was slow to recognize his great ability, but eventually passed a resolution tendering him a medal" (New York Times obituary). The present publication, which largely consists of bound up extracts from the Congressional Record, was part of his campaign for recognition.

Boston: Houghton and Mifflin, 1887. 12mo., pictorial tan cloth, stamped in brown & gilt, top edge gilt. First Trade Edition. [BAL 18207; only 1,270 copies were reportedly printed]. Young specialized in autographed copies of books by period authors throughout the world. Also, inscribed by Smith on a front blank page that has apparently been tipped in: "Nov. 6, 1902. Not only is this book of the first Edition but its opening chapter is the first story I ever wrote & its appreciation by the late Mr. Scudder (ed. of "Atlantic") determined my subsequent literary career. F. Hopkinson Smith." [Last few letters in "Smith" has ink somewhat smeared. Among Smith's earliest works and a most interesting copy. Ballads and Poems of Tragic Life

London - Macmillan and Co., 1887 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A bright, clean first edition of Ballads and Poems of Tragic Life by George Meredith. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering. First Edition. With a nameplate for 'Charles Meek' on the front pastedown. George Meredith, OM, 1828 1909, was an English novelist and poet during the Victorian era. He read law and was articled as a solicitor, but abandoned that profession for journalism and poetry shortly after marrying. He collected his early writings, first published in periodicals, into Poems, published to some acclaim in 1851. After settling in Surrey, Meredith continued writing novels and poetry, often inspired by nature. Meredith supplemented his often uncertain writer's income with a job as a publisher's reader. His advice to Chapman and Hall made him influential in the world of letters. His friends in the literary world included, at different times, William and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Algernon Swinburne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Leslie Stephen and J. M. Barrie. Before his death, Meredith was honoured from many quarters: he succeeded Lord Tennyson as president of the Society of Authors; in 1905 he was appointed to the Order of Merit by King Edward VII. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is someslight wear to the extremities, including some slight bumping. Internally the pages are clean and bright. Overall the condition is very good..

McCLELLAN'S OWN STORY. The War for the Union, The Soldiers Who Fought It, The Civilians Who Directed It,and His Relations to It and to Them

New York: Charles L. Webster, 1887. First edition. With 14 illustrations including a steel engraved portrait frontispiece. 8vo, publisher?'s original green cloth gilt lettered on the spine and pictorially decorated in gilt and red on the upper cover. ix, 678. Index. An unusually nice copy indeed, especially sturdy and fresh, with no foxing and only modest evidence of age to the dark green cloth, very scarce as such. A VERY PLEASING COPY AND a scarce title in the Great War series, which also includes the PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF ULYSSES S. GRANT. Collectable copies of these books are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. In the earliest days of the war McClellan was assigned to command the Division of the Potomac and established the defenses of Washington. Much of the early direction of the Union force was established by him. He was one of the first to recognize that the Confederacy was an effective and organized power, not just a mob of rabble-rousers. ?"This volume includes a biographical sketch of the author by W.C. Prime, a treatise on the causes of the war, a discussion of the early months of chaotic activity, a selection of letters to his wife, and a narrative of McClellan?'s part in the war from the summer of 1861 through his removal after Antietam.?"
